Obituary
The
following obituary, written a number of years ago by Mrs. Maher, was sent to
the Time Table a few months ago by a friend. It was originally
entrusted to Mr. H. P. Jaqua of Bedford, with instructions to
give it to the Time Table at her death. Mr. Jaqua died some time ago and in going through his papers, Mrs. Jaqua found the obituary and sent it to us. This is the obituary as it was written by
Mrs. Maher:
Elizabeth
Jones Maher was born near Cincinnati, Ohio, Aug 27, 1847, and was of
Scotch-Irish and Welch Presbyterian ancestry. Her forbearers emigrated
from the eastern
states to southern Ohio as pioneers when Cincinnati was but a village and the
surrounding country was a wilderness.
Mrs. Maher
was one of eight children born to Ludwell Gaines and
Elizabeth Keller Jones. Losing both
father and mother in early girlhood she was received into the home of an uncle
and aunt at Crawfordsville, Ind. She continued to make this her home as long as
they lived.
She received
her higher education in the Normal Schools of Indiana and pursued her chosen
profession (of teaching) for more than forty years. She became a member of the
church at the age of 20.
In 1894,
when she was married to James Wilfred Maher, her membership was transferred
from the Center Presbyterian church at Crawfordsville, Ind to the First Presbyterian church of Lenox, la.
Mr. Maher
died in St. Louis, in 1926.
Mrs Maher
listed several brothers, sisters and foster brothers and sisters, but in the
note that accompanied the obituary, Mrs. Jaqua said
"Mrs. Maher's family are all gone now, except for
nieces and nephews."
Mrs Maher
mentioned in her story that her favorite hymns were: "Lead Kindly Light " "Crossing the
Bar," and Faith of Our Fathers.”

Melvin, Bertha –
Melvin, Orlen –
Melvin, Roy -
Roy Melvin, his
wife, Bertha, and one son Orlen are dead at Bedford
following a Sunday morning shooting in which only one member of the Melvin
family
escaped.
The living son, Darold, 15, ran sobbing from the
house about 10 o'clock Sunday morning and told a neighbor that his father had
shot his mother and brother and himself.
Melvin,
apparently crazed by trouble he had been having with his wife broke into the
basement of the home sometime Saturday night and hid there until Mrs. Melvin
went to the basement to fix the furnace fire about 10 o'clock Sunday morning.
When she
entered the basement Melvin shot her twice in the head and once in the chest,
using a .32 caliber pistol.
The sound of
the shooting brought the two boys to the basement and as the eldest boy, Orlen, entered his father shot him through the temple. He
died huddled over his mother's body,
Melvin did
not shoot at the younger boy but turned the gun on himself. Melvin had been
estranged from his wife for some time and about three weeks ago she filed suit
for divorce, charging him with cruel and inhuman treatment.
