Allen, John Dean -

John Dean Allen age 7, son of Mr and Mrs Dean Allen, 8333 Charles Street, Omaha, Nebraska, passed away early Friday

morning after an illness of several months. The body was taken to the Roland Funeral home in Corning. Funeral services

were at the Christian church in Gravity Monday PM. Burial was in Gravity Cemetery.

Barnes, Mickey Joe -

Mickey Joe, infant son of Mr and Mrs Ace Barnes, passed away Thursday morning at the Rosary hospital. Services were

held at the Roland funeral home in Corning Friday, the Rev. C S Whitehouse officiating.  Burial was in Gravity cemetery.

Besides his parents, the baby is survived by two brothers. Martin and Randy.

John Craft received word Sunday night of the death of his brother Joe Craft at the Veterans hospital in Des Moines, sympathy is extended to the Craft family.

Glaspie, Cynthia Goff -

Zeke Goff of Grant City and Otto Glaspie of Ark., were Monday visitors of Mrs. Villa Canny, a cousin. On Sunday they

had attended the funeral services in Grant City of an aged cousin Cynthia Goff Glaspie who died Thursday in Ponca

City Okla.. at the age of 103 years.

Larson, Claus August “Gus”

Claus August (Gus) Larson was born in Sweden January 1, 1882 and died in Rosary Hospital at Corning, Iowa, on January

8, 1956, aged 74 years, 7 days.

 

He was a life member in the Lutheran Church in his native land. Mr Larson came to America at the age of 18, and has been

a resident of the state of Iowa ever since. He was married to Mary Krohmer on November 20, 1926. He is survived by his wife, Mary; a daughter by a former marriage, Lila Brown, of Earlham, Iowa and a step-son, Arthur Larson, of Omaha, Nebraska.

 

His ready wit and cheerful disposition endeared him to his many friends and he will be greatly missed by friends and relatives.

Friends received word Sunday of the death of John Leno of Dallas Center, the deceased grew up in this community, but

moved away 36 years ago.

Long, H. Roy –

H Roy Long,, son of Robert A and Mary Ann Rye Long, was born at Selma, Calif June 12, 1890. He lived with his family

in several California towns in his early years. When he was 3 years old, his mother was killed by the explosion of a stove, and his father after attempting to hold the  family together was forced to place the children in different homes.

 

For several years they lived with various friends and relatives, until 1903 when they were sent to Iowa, and Roy made his

home with his aunt and uncle, Mr and Mrs Ed Gordon of Lenox.  He was graduated from the Lenox high school in 1912 and from Tarkio College in 1916.

 

In the same year, on July 10, he was married to Lela M Tully of Lenox and they set up their home in Lenox, where two children were born. There too, Mr Long entered business as a bookkeeper in the Farmers Merchant Bank, and worked up to the position of cashier. When the bank closed in 1931 he entered the field of insurance and real estate, which was his business to the end of his life.

 

As a boy he joined the Lenox Presbyterian church, and is remembered as a consistently active worker in that church,

both in its youth groups and in the Sunday school. After his marriage he transferred to the United Presbyterian Church,

continuing his devoted interest and work through his entire life. He was ordained an elder in 1934, and served two six-year terms on the Session.  He was superintendent of the Church School for several years and taught a boys class for

many years. He served as a Trustee of Tarkio College, Tarkio, Mo, for several terms, and was on the Board at the time

of his death. He was also active for a long time in Taylor County and Lenox community youth work. He was a Rotarian, a

member of the Odd Fellows and the Masonic lodges and served as town treasurer and as a member of the town council.

 

Mr and Mrs Long, with their son Robert and his family had spent Christmas, 1955, at the home of their daughter, Mrs

Mary Lou Sunderwirth at Casper, Wyo. As they were returning home Mr Long suffered a stroke on Dec 27 in Rushville,

Neb. and was taken to the hospital there, where he died without regaining consciousness on Jan 2, 1956.

 

Mr Long is survived by his wife, Lela; a daughter, Mrs Mary Lou Sunderwirth of Casper, Wyo.; a son, Robert Andrew

Long of Fondam Ia.; two grandchildren Stephen and Suzanne Sunderwirth,  a sister Mrs Clair Hawthorne of Clarinda, la.; a

brother Wilbur of Cedar Falls, la.; two cousins, J L Gordon of Marshall, Mo., and Hugh E Gordon of Marion, la., and many

nieces, nephews and other relatives.

 

He will be greatly missed by multitudes of friends, not only in the community but in wider church, educational and business circles.  His life has been a testimony to the love and grace of God and the highest and most lasting values.

H. Roy Long, 65, died at 10 am Monday, Jan. 2 at the hospital in Rushville, Neb. after suffering a stroke Tuesday evening, Dec. 27.

 

He and his wife and his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs Robert A Long of Fonda, Iowa, had spent the Christmas holidays at the home of Rev, and Mrs Alfred Sunderwirth and family at Casper,

Wyo. They were enroute home when Mr Long became ill. Mrs

Long, the daughter and son were with Mr Long at the time of his death.

 

Funeral services are today, Thursday at 2:30 at the United

Presbyterian church. The Rev. Willard Morris will be assisted

by other ministers. Burial is to be in Lenox cemetery.

 

Mr Long owned and operated a real estate and insurance office in Lenox since 1931. He was a Rotarian, a member of the Masonic Lodge, one of the trustees of Tarkio college, Tarkio, Mo., and had been an elder in the United Presbyterian church here for a number of years.

 

He was born in Selma, Calif., June 12, 1890, and came to Lenox in 1903. He was raised by his uncle and aunt, the late Mr and Mrs Ed Gordon.

 

He was a graduate of Lenox high school and of Tarkio college, Tarkio, Mo. In 1916 he entered the Farmers and Merchants

bank as a bookkeeper and was cashier at the time the bank closed in 1931, following the death of S E Wainwright.

 

He was married July 20, 1916 to Lela M. Tully of Lenox.

 

Mr. Long had served as town treasurer and also as a member of the

town council. If he had a hobby, it was young people. He taught a Sunday School class of boys for many years and his activities with them extended far beyond the class hour on Sunday morning.

 

Survivors: his widow, Lela; 1daughter, Mrs Mary Lou Sunderwirth,

of Casper, Wyo.; 1 son, Robert Andrew Long, of Fonda; 2  grand- children; 1 sister, Mrs Clara Hawthorne, of Clarinda; 1 brother, Wilbur, of Cedar Falls; 2 cousins, J L Gordon of Marshall, Mo., and Hugh Gordon of Marion, Iowa

Mears, Blanche Brown –

Friends here received word of the death of Mrs. Ralph Mears of Tulsa, Okla.  She passed away Thursday night and was buried in Chandler, Okla., Saturday.  She was the daughter of Dr. Ernest Brown of Lenox and lived here until she was about 16 years old.

 

Her mother, Mrs. Jean B. Raby Brown died about 2 months ago in Tulsa.

Meinberg, Martha Ellen David -

Word was received- here by friends that Martha Ellen Meinberg passed away at her home in Rapids, Wisconsin. Mrs

Meinberg was the daughter of Marie and David David. Her husband, two brothers and a sister survive. Martha was born

and raised in this vicinity.

Munyon, Grace Clark -

Mrs Lela Clark received word last week that her sister-in-law Mrs Grace Clark Munyon of Agra, Kansas, passed away Feb.

20. The Munyon family were former residents of Beaconsfield, Iowa.

Owens, Edwin Leon -

Edwin Leon Owens, son of John and Sarah Foster Owens was born Sept 14, 1868 at Morning Sun, Ohio, and departed this

life Sept 9, at the home of his daughter where he had lived since the death of his wife. He lacked only five days of being

87 years old.

 

Dec 11, 1889 he was married to Mary Willis in Winfield, la. To this union were born five children. Three infant sons preceded him in death as did his wife, Mary, Nov 23, 1908. In 1911 he married Delia Griffin who passed away Dec 7, 1953.

 

When young he came with his parents to Morning Sun, la., where he grew to manhood and began his life work of farming.

He became a member of the United Presbyterian church in his youth, transferring to the Winfield, Clearfield and Lenox

churches.  As long as he was able he was faithful in attendance and for several years was an elder in the Clearfield church. He received a great deal of satisfaction from living the Christian life and mingling with his Christian friends.

 

He leaves to mourn his passing: one son, Mark and wife of Ellston, la.; his daughter and son-in-law, Alberta and John

Knox; 3 grandchildren, Maxine Stevenson and Lyle Knox of Clearfield and Hazel Lundberg of Denver, Colo., and five great

grandchildren. Besides his immediate family, four brothers, Bert, Miller and Clyde of Clearfield; Earl of Mt Vernon and 2

sisters, Mrs Jennie Campbell and Mrs Nellie Moyers of Wapello, la., survive with a host of other relatives and friends.

 

Services were held Sunday afternoon, Sept 11 at the United Presbyterian church in Clearfield, Rev Samuel Andreasen officiating. Interment in Clearfield cemetery.

Rush, Claude –

Claude Rush, 74, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Mallou Rush, former resident of south of Clearfield, died Jan. 4 at his home in Lincoln, Nebr.  He had just returned home from his duties as custodian of the Methodist church when death came without warning.

 

He is survived by his widow, the former Beulah Wallace, 3 children, Chroles Herrick of Omaha, two sons. Carl Rush of

Los Angeles and Marvin Rush of Ft Cook, Nebr., also 5 grand children and one great- grandchild, a brother Fred Rush of

Bedford, two sisters Vera Harvey of Lenox and Viola of Ark.

 

His parents and 2 brothers, Rex and Chester preceded him in death. Funeral rites were held Saturday in Lincoln. Mrs Ross Hamilton of Clearfield, sister of Mrs Rush and Mrs Ray Harvey, sister of the deceased and Miss Thelma attended the services.

Sanders, William Jefferson -

William Jefferson Sanders was born Feb. 6, 1859, near Maidsville, W Virginia and departed this life Jan. 16, 1956 in

Creston. He was the son of John and Sarah Sanders who preceded him in death, together with two brothers Marshall and

Mark Sanders and one sister Etta Ours.

 

On Dec 13, 1879, he was united In marriage to Lucy Tapp and to this union four children were born. One child died in infancy.  Those surviving are Harvey James Sanders, Ella Worthlngton, and Bertie Sanders who cared for her father in the home.

 

The family moved to Iowa in 1895 and to Lenox in 1907, where Mrs Sanders passed away on Sept. 25, 1946. Also surviving are six grandchildren, five great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren.

William Sanders, 96, died at the home of his son in Creston, Monday evening. His home was in Lenox. He was a retired farmed and had lived in this vicinity many years. Survivors: 1 son, Harvey, of Creston; 2 daughters, Mrs Ella Worthington, Chicago, Ill., Miss Bertie Sanders at home and 1 niece, Mrs Charles Wurster of Lenox.  His wife preceded him in death.  Services were Wednesday at Bender Funeral Home with the Rev. Cecil Simonton officiating.  Burial in the Lenox Cemetery.

Sanders, William Jefferson -

Thompson, John Eugene -

John Eugene Thompson, son of Ann Jane and Joseph M Thompson was born on a farm in Union County March 23

1875, and died at his home in Adams County March 12, 1956 at the age of 80 years, 11 months, and 18 days. In 1890

he moved to his present home, where he resided until his death.

 

Preceding him in death were his mother, Ann Jane Thompson Hewitt; his father, Joseph, M Thompson, a brother, Arthur

W, who died in infancy, and a half-sister, Pearle Maharry; also his step-father and several step-sisters.

 

Surviving him is a brother-in-law, Cecil Maharry; three nephews: Dr James Maharry, of La Crescenta, California; Leland Maharry of Lenox; and Gerald Maharry of Clearfield; and nine great nieces and nephews; also, a step-sister, Lizzie

Stewart of Humansville, Missouri, and a step-brother, Charlie Hewitt of Lenox and a host of other relatives and friends. At an early age he joined the Prairie Star Presbyterian Church where he remained an active member until his health failed.

 

John was like a father to his sister Pearle whose father died when she was two years old.  After Pearle married, he continued to live with his mother and care for her until his death. Never having married his interests centered around Pearle and her family. After her death he seemingly lost interest in life. He had many relatives and friends, and to them his death will be a personal loss as he was loved and respected by all who knew him.

Mrs Mable Green has received word of the death of her sister-in-law, Mrs Fran Turner, at Independence,

Ore., Sunday. Mrs Turner was the former Mable Bassett of Sharpsburg. [Maybe Fran Bassett Turner]

Capt. Rex R Wetzel, 35 of Oklahoma City, Okla., who met instant death Jan. 13, in a crash of a B-47 Strato Jet Bomber

near Amarillo, Tex., was a cousin of Mrs Alva Jones, south of Lenox.

Friends received word Saturday of the death of Gus Winstrum who formerly lived south of Gravity. He passed away at

the hospital in Corning. Funeral was at Stanton Sunday.
