Abarr,
Bessie Lillian Harris -
Bessie
Lillian Abarr, daughter of Reuben and Esther Harris,
was born in Wayne county, Iowa, near Allerton, Iowa, Sept. 6, 1884, and died at the Greater
Community hospital in Creston, Iowa, Jan. 12, 1936.
She was
married to Alvin J. Abarr on March 17, 1907. To them
were born three children, Ardath, Helen and Leland,
who with their father, survive her.
Besides her
own children she leaves a niece, Alice Ann Gallagher, who has been a member of
the home for the past ten years. She leaves one sister, Mrs. William Nelson of
Jefferson, Iowa; three brothers, W. H. Harris of Meade, Kansas; P. A. Harris of
Letcher, S. Dak.; and Dr. Harvey Harris of
Linesville, Iowa. She also leaves four grandchildren.
At an early
age she united with the Christian church at Walnut, Iowa, later affiliating
with the Methodist church at Diagonal, Iowa, during her residence
of five years
there. Since 1912 her membership has been in the Methodist church at
Clearfield, where she has been a faithful worker.
Funeral
services were held at the Methodist church on Tuesday, and the church was
filled to capacity. Pastor Henn spoke from the words
in the 21st
Psalm. A mixed quartet sang: Misses Helen Barrans and Mary
Swan, E. C. Heaton and Donald Green.
The flowers
were wonderful in variety and beauty. Interment was in Clearfield cemetery.

Mrs. A. A.
Childs, mother of Fred A. Childs and Mrs. W. K. Madden of Lenox, died at the
home of her daughter here early Tuesday morning, January 28. Her age was 80
years, 6 months and 23 days.
Funeral
services will be held Friday afternoon, Jan. 30, at 2 o'clock at the Barber
Funeral Home and will be in charge of the Rev. Thomas Kelly. Interment will be
made in Fairview cemetery.

Nellie Jane
Brown was born in Wyanet, Illinois, on July 5, 1855,
and died in Lenox, Iowa on January 28, 1936 at the age of 80 years, six months
and
twenty-three
days.
On November
14, 1873, in Wyanet, she was married to A. A. Childs,
who preceded her in death in March, 1912. Four children were born to them, of
which three
survive the mother, Mrs. W. H. Madden of Lenox; Mrs. T. F. McMahon of Kansas
City, Mo.; and Fred Childs, also of Lenox.
Besides her
children, she is survived by two sisters and one brother, Mrs. L. M. Blacker of
Gardner, Kansas; Mrs. W. K. Van Camp of Ottumwa, Iowa; and E. C. Brown of
Little Rock, Arkansas. She also leaves three grandchildren and two great
grandchildren.
After her
marriage Mrs Childs lived with her husband, on a farm
in Bureau county, Ill. for several years, moving to
Iowa then, they settled in the vicinity of Red Oak. In 1881 she came to Lenox
where her husband entered the drug business with his brother.
At the time
of her death, she was a member of the Lenox M. E. church. In addition she was
also a member of the Lenox O.E. S. and the M. F. C., being a
charter member of the latter
Upon the
death of her mother, in her early life, she took her mother's place helping to
raise her brother and sisters.
Several days
before Christmas in 1934, she had a severe fall, spraining her leg. In March of
1935, just when she was able to get about again, she tripped on
the steps
breaking a leg. Such an injury made it impossible for her to get around again
as she had been in the habit of doing although it did not affect her cheerful
and happy disposition.
On Monday
evening, in apparently good health, she retired after visiting with friends and
members of her family. A sudden illness of a few minutes duration and she
responded to the call which bid her come up higher.
Funeral
services were held Thursday, January 30, at the Barber Funeral Home in charge of the
Rev. Thomas Kelly. Interment was made in Fairview cemetery.

Davenport, Nelson Stewart –
Funeral
services were held Monday afternoon at the home east of Lenox for Nelson Davenport
who died Feb. 1, at the age of 88 years. Services were
in charge of
the Rev. Thomas Kelly and burial services were in charge of the Masonic
fraternity. Burial was made in the cemetery near the home.
Nelson
Stewart Davenport, son of Hugh and Johanna Davenport, was born in DeWitt county, Illinois, on January 23, 1848 and passed away at his
home near Lenox, Iowa on Feb. 1, 1936 at the age of 88 years and 9 days.
On January
4, 1872, he was married to Mary Ann Bauman-Nulph, who
preceded him in death on Sept. 27, 1926. To them seven children were born,
three of whom preceeded him in death. Those who
survive their father are Mrs. George Evart Condra, of
Lincoln, Nebr.; Mrs Hannah Hayes, John Stewart
and Peter
Logan, of near Lenox. He also leaves 11 grandchildren and 3 great
grandchildren.
Although his
parents had fourteen children he is survived by only one brother, George, of
Clinton, Ill.
During the
Civil War Mr Davenport served with the Union forces and then moved to Iowa in
1869. The last sixty-five years have
been spent on the farm where he died.
He was a
member of Tremont Lodge No. 343 A. F. &, A. M. of Lenox He was also
a member of various other organizations

Farris, Susan Ellen -
Mrs. Susan
Ellen Farris was born near Cora, in Sullivan county,
Missouri, on March 9, 1956, and died at her home in Maryville, Mo., on January
21, 1936.
When her
parents moved to Iowa she moved with them, settling in the vicinity of Lacona. On Dec. 7, 1879, she was united in marriage to
David Farris who preceded her in death on August 12, 1931.
Surviving
are two daughters, Mrs. Laura Beeman of Des Moines,
Iowa; Mrs. Elmer Reynolds of Maryville; four grandchildren, Mrs. Wm. Warner and
Mrs. Lloyd Aim of Des Monies; Harold and Theodore Reynolds of Maryville.
When a young woman, Mrs Farris united
with the Church of Christ, being baptized in a river. Thirty-five years ago she united
with the Methodist church in Iowa and when she moved to Maryville thirty years
ago, she transferred her membership to the First M. E. church of Maryville.
Funeral
services were held at 10:00 o'clock on Thursday morning at Campbell's funeral
home in Maryville by her pastor, the Rev. V. C. Clark. The body was brought to
Lenox that afternoon for burial in the Lenox cemetery at which time the Rev.
Thomas Kelly conducted the services at the grave.

Foreman, Henry Lloyd -
Henry Lloyd
Foreman was born in the Prairie Gem district, not far from Clearfield, October
2, 1886. He was the son of Johnson and Luella Darlington
Foreman, who
were pioneers of Taylor county.
When Lloyd
was about a year old, the family moved to California because of the failing
health of the father. This quest for health led them first to Pasadena, then to
Compton, where they lived for some time, then out on the desert at Palm
Springs, and finally back to Pasadena, where the father waged a brave fight for
life but lost.
Later on
Merle, Lloyd's older brother, also died, and then he and his mother returned to
the old home at Clearfield, where they lived until her death in
1918.
Lloyd then
went to live with his uncle and aunt, Willits and Ruth Foreman, who also were
pioneers of Taylor county, but now resided at West
Branch, Iowa. Later Lloyd made his home at Glenwood, Iowa, where he made many
warm and sincere friends.
Saturday
night, January 18, 1936, he died very quickly and quietly. He is survived by
three uncles, Will Darlington of Clearfield, Frank Darlington of Ames, and
Jesse Foreman of Mount Pleasant, Iowa, as well as many cousins
and friends.
Services
were held at the Crew funeral home in Clearfield on Tuesday at 1:30, Rev. W. C. Henn officiating. Interment was in the family lot In
the Conway cemetery.
Those
attending the funeral of Lloyd Foreman last Tuesday were: Lee Foreman of Ames,
Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Mosher of Urbandale, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Carlton of
Bedford, Mr. and Mrs. Williams of Clarinda, and Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Buchanan of
Conway, all cousins of the deceased.

Godwyn, Eva C. –
Miss Eva C. Godwyn, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Phil Godwyn, pioneer residents of Lenox,
died at the home of her brother, La Mound C. Godwyn,
Monterey
Park, Calif., Feb. 1, 1936. Miss Godwyn kept house for her brother arid helped rear her nephew, Donald Gordon Godwyn, whose mother died at his birth, 8 years ago. Miss Godwyn had been in poor health for several years.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother,
Arthur C. Godwyn, and is survived by her brother La
Mound and nephew Donald G., and an
uncle,
J. Simpson.
She was a member of the Christian church. Miss Godwyn's parents were
pioneer residents of Lenox at a time when the town consisted only of a postoflice, one or two stores and a depot. Her brother,
Arthur, was the first boy born in Lenox.
She left here 21 years ago.

Haas, Augusta Frank -
Augusta
Frank-Haas, was born Nov. 22, 1851, near Bremen, Germany, and died Jan. 22,
1936, aged 84 years and 2 months.
She lived in
Germany until 23 years of age, and then migrated to Coal Valley, Ill., in 1873.
In 1881 she moved with her family to Lenox, Iowa and located on a farm. They
moved into Lenox in 1910 and resided there until death.
She was
married Nov. 11, 1873 to Frederick Haas and to them 7 children were born, five
of whom are living: Frederick W., Lenox; Mrs. Minnie Johnson of
Speartfish,
S. Dak.; William F. of Lenox; John T. of Billings,
Mont.; Robert C. of Long Beach, Calif. One son, August, died when four years
old, and Frank B. died last year. Her husband preceded her in death 11 years
ago.
She was a
member of the German Lutheran church of her native land and never moved her
membership. She came of thrifty, hardworking German stock, and it remained
through life. Her home was the center of her life and work. She kept a
neighborly, helpful spirit alive in her heart by kindly neighborly deeds. Her faith maintained its glow by constant
reading of the Bible. The family cherishes the memory of a mother with her full
share of those motherly qualities of sympathy, self-sacrifice and love.
Besides the
children already mentioned, she is survived by 13 grandchildren and 5 great
grandchildren.
The funeral
service was held in the Arnold Funeral Home Friday at 2 p. m., Jan. 24, the Rev. I. G. Randels was in
charge. Interment was made in Lenox cemetery.

Horton, Elta Fern Hatchett –
Elta Fern Hatchett, daughter of Andrew and Rose Hatchett,
was born near Bedford, Iowa, August 23, 1897, and died at her home east of
Bedford, Feb. 15,
1936. She grew to womanhood in the vicinity of Conway, Iowa,
having lived all her life in Taylor county, with the exception of a short time
spent in Creston.
She was
married to Floyd Horton, June 1, 1922. There were no children. Besides
her husband, she is survived by her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs.
W. A. Hatchett of Lenox; three sisters,
Mrs. Claudia Severn and Mrs. Grace Adair of Lenox, and Mrs. Pearl Dotts of Los Angeles, Calif.; one brother Manford Hatchett. A brother and sister have
preceded her in death.
Elta was of a joyous,
sunny disposition and those nearest her will sadly miss her gay laugh and ready
smile.
Funeral
services were held at the Crew funeral home Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 18, at 2
o'clock, conducted by Rev. W. C. Henn, pastor of the
Clearfield Methodist church. Interment was in the Clearfield cemetery.
Music was in
charge of Misses Margaret, Lois and Sue Swan and Elsie Fawcett, accompanied by
Mrs. Belle Anderson. Pall bearers were Lawrence Kilby,
Dick Pottinger, Dean Brown, George O'Dell, Arthur Lourie and Sam Parrish.

Howes,
Ruth Phelps -
Ruth
(Phelps) Howes, daughter of L. W. and Mary Phelps was
born at Kokomo, Ind., Sept 12, 1895, and died Feb. 17, 1936 at the General
hospital at Kansas
City. She was 40
years old.
She grew to
womanhood in this community and attended public school here. She was active in
church and Sunday School work. For some time she
worked as a compositor in the printing office and then went to work for the
telephone
company.
She then moved to Des Moines where she continued the telephone work.
She was
married to Howard C. Howes, Aug. 27, 1923, at Des
Moines. They lived in Des Moines about a year and then went to Dayton, Ohio,
where they remained two years before moving o Kansas City, where she spent the
rest of her life.
Ruth was
favorably known and generally liked. She made friends easily and was a favorite
with young people. She is survived by her husband and daughter, aged 11, her mother, Mrs. Mary
Phelps, her aunts, Mrs. Emma Bastow of Mount Ayr, Mrs. C. J. Kirby of Afton, and Mrs. A. A. Lutman of Shenandoah.
Funeral
services were held Friday at Hope Evangelical church of Afton at 2:30. The Rev.
Walter Cerka was in charge, assisted by the Rev. McMican of the Presbyterian church,
the Presbyterian church furnishing the music. Interment was made in Greenlawn cemetery.

Parkinson, John Henry -
John Henry Parkinson,
son of Anna and George Parkinson, was born in Davenport, Iowa, in 1862, where
he lived until nine years old. He then moved
with his parents
to Audubon county where he grew to young manhood. In 1888 he married Mary
Annabelle Deets and to them were born eight children.
His wife,
and two children preceeded him In death.
Mr.
Parkinson was engaged in the blacksmith business until failing health forced
him to give up the work. He made his home with his daughter Kathryn
for a number of
years, then went to Adair where he lived with his son Glenn until 18 months ago
when he went to Missouri. He remarried and
lived there until death.
Mr.
Parkinson is survived by six children, William of Adair; Mrs. Dolly Armstrong
of Blair, Nebr., Glenn of Adair, Mrs. Kathryn Fredericks of Portsmouth, Quinn
of Grand Island, Nebr. and Ray of Casper, Wyo. There are also nine
grandchildren, four brothers and two sisters.
Mr.
Parkinson was a kind and loving father. He was always a church attendant and
worker and at various times was a member of the Methodist and
Presbyterian
churches.
The body was
brought to Lenox and funeral services were held at the Barber funeral home
Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 3, at 2 o'clock, conducted by the Rev.
I. G. Randels. Burial was made in the Lenox cemetery.

Riley, Frank -
Frank Riley,
fourth son of Marten and Eva Riley, was born at Wellsville, Ohio, Feb. 1, 1868
and died Feb. 7, 1936, at the age of 68 years and 6 days. When a small child he
came with his parents to Adams county, Iowa, and located in
Mercer township, where he grew to manhood.
He was
married to Caroline Emily Oliver on Feb. 28, 1899, after which they settled on
the homestead of the bride's parents which they purchased, and
where they have
since resided. Three children were born:
Florence Mary, Kenneth Paul, and Frances Genevieve. Their son, Paul, preceded
his father
n death Aug.
23, 1919.
In his early
life Mr. Riley was converted and united with the Methodist church at Mercer
Center, of which he has always been a loyal supporter. He has
served on the church board for a number of years, and was one of the official members
at the time of his death.
Besides his devoted
companion and two daughters, Mrs. Florence Walter of Prescott and Mrs.
Genevieve Rogers, at home, he is survived by three brothers,
William, Charles and Louis; and one sister, Mrs. Lizzie Fowler,
all of Corning.
Mr. Riley
was one of Mercer township's thrifty farmers. He was always willing to be of
service and ready to lend a helping hand to his friends and neighbors. The home
has lost a devoted and loving husband and father. He was always
ready to grant
their every wish if at all possible. He will be sadly missed by his loved ones
and the community.
The funeral
services were conducted in the Mercer Center church Tuesday, Feb. 11, by the
pastor, R. V. Pelt. Burial was made in
the Lenox cemetery,

Robinson, Elizabeth -
Mrs.
Elizabeth Robinson died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. George Stephens,
Sunday morning, at the age of 78 years. She had been an invalid for a number of years.
Funeral
services were held at the Crew funeral home Tuesday at 2:00 o'clock, Rev. H. B. Hutchman, pastor of the United Presbyterian church
had charge
of the
services. The body was then taken to Lakewood, Mo. for interment.

Seller, Columbus S. –
Columbus S. Seller,
eldest son of Milton and Sarah Seller, was born in Greencastle, Ind., Sept. 21,
1853, and died at the home of his daughter in Lenox, Iowa, Feb. 20, 1936, at
the age of 82 years, 4 months and 29 days.
On Dec. 8,
1880 he was married to Anna Mary Whyte, who preceded him in death on Nov 10,
1935. Ten children were born, three having preceded the
father in death, two dying in infancy, and Virgil, who died Feb. 23, 1920.
He is
survived by four daughters and three sons, Mrs. Vena Saunders of Beresford, S.
D. Mrs. Bertha Toland of Lenox Mrs. Edith Johnson of
Chicago,
Ill., Mrs.
Anna Murphy of Sherman, Texas, Lester of Marceline, Mo., Oscar L. of Pierson,
la., and Cederic N. of Lenox. Mr. Seller also leaves two sisters and five
brothers, Mrs. Florence Corsline of Garden Grove, la., Mrs. Una McGrew of
Lenox,
William H. of Summer, Wash., John F. of Harlan, Ore;on,
Albert M. and Cresley R. of Lenox .and Edwin R. of Kanoka Mo.
His early
days were spent in Greencastle, Ind., where he attended school and graduated
from the high school of that place. At the age of twenty he came to Iowa,
living for a while in Ringgold county, then moving
later to Taylor county. In 1913 he moved to Macon, Mo., and later to Marceline.
When a young
man he united with the M. E. church and at time of his death he was a member of
the M. E. church of Marceline, Mo.
Funeral
services were held Saturday afternoon, Feb. 22, at the Barber funeral home in
Lenox conducted by the Rev. Thomas Kelly. Burial was made in the Lenox
cemetery.

Weatherman, Vera Margaret Rogers
-
Vera
Margaret, youngest daughter of Charles and Elizabeth Rogers, was born near Lenox,
Iowa, February 28, 1908, and died Feb. 14, 1936, at her home
in Salt Lake
City, Utah, at the age of 27 years, 11 months and 14 days.
She was
graduated from the Lenox high school in 1925. That fall she entered the nurses’s training school in Creston and graduated from
there in 1928. In September 1929, she went to Chicago, Ill., and was a
supervisor in the Passavant hospital for 3 years.
While in
Chicago she was married to Dr. Harold Weatherman on May 31, 1931. Later she and
her husband went to California, where they made their
home for 3
years. In 1935 they moved to Salt Lake City, their present home.
At the age
of 10 years she united with the Methodist church of which she remained a
member.
She is
survived by her husband, father and mother, four brothers, Ernest of Prescott,
Alpha of Lenox, Robert of Leon, and Orville of Hamburg; two sisters, Mrs. Mary
McGregor and Mrs. Faye Hockett, both of Prescott. A
brother, Ray, and a sister, Effie, preceded her in death. Ray died in 1919 at
the age of 28; Effie, the wife of Van Gibson, died in 1920.
Funeral
services were conducted Tuesday, Feb. 18, from the Arnold funeral home in Lenox
by the Rev. R. V. Felt of Prescott. Burial was made in the Lenox cemetery.

Wilt, Cassius M. -
Cassius M.
Wilt was born Jan. 31, 1858, near Osceola, Iowa, and moved with his parents to
Taylor county, Iowa, in 1861, where he made his home until 1900 when he took
his family to the farm home east of Atlanta, Mo., which remained his home until
about four months before his death on Feb. 13, 1936. He was 78 years old.
He was
married to Lucinda May Shepard, Fen. 9, 1888. To them were born five children. Of these three
sons and one daughter survive. They are: Ralph Wilt of Borger, Texas; Dale and
Roy Wilt of Atlanta, Mo, and Mrs. Lucille Morton
of East St.
Louis, Ill.
Besides his
wife, and four children he is survived by five brothers, Porter, Eli, Harry and
Frank Wilt, all of Lenox, and a sister, Dora Wilt of Los Angeles, Calif.
There are
also ten grandchildren. Mr. Wilt was a member of the Plainview church of near
Atlanta.
Funeral
services were held Sunday, Feb. 16, at Mount Tabor church, near Atlanta, and
burial was made in the Mount Tabor cemetery.
