Pine, Charles –

Burial in the Lenox cemetery was made Monday for Charles Pine, 60, Mount Ayr farmer killed in a two-car collision near Pattonsburg, Mo. early Sunday morning.  Five persons were killed in the accident.  Mr. Pine,  a bachelor, had farmed near Mount Ayr for many years.  He is survived by two brothers, Orville and Ray Pine both of Diagonal.

Pitman, William -

William Pitman, 77, former barber at Conway, died at the Armstrong Nursing Home in Bedford at 2 p. m. Saturday. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church at Conway at 2 p. m. Monday. Burial was in the Conway cemetery, Mr. Pitman, known to his friends at "Biddy," is survived by a sister, Mrs. Lillian Powell of Conway, and two brothers, Jay in Idaho and Ray in Villisca

Probasco, Hazel Whipple Munshower -

Mrs. Hazel Probasco, 52, died at her home Sunday at 1:45 a.m. following a long illness.  Funeral services were held Wednesday

at 2 p. m. at the Christian church here with Rev. Merwin Coad of Boone officiating.  Burial in the Lenox cemetery.

She was a member of the Christian church, and had been an active worker in the Auxiliary of Parkinson Unit No. 250 for many years. The Auxiliary members of the local unit attended the funeral services in a group.

Obituary

Hazel Whipple, youngest daughter of Clyde  and Minerva Whipple, was born on a farm near Gravity, Iowa, on Sept. 18, 1898, and passed away at her farm home southwest of Lenox early Sunday morning, Aug. 12, 1951 at the age of 52 years, 10 months and 24 days, having lived her entire lifetime in Taylor county.

She was united in marriage to John Munshower in 1915 and to this union one daughter, Edith Blanche, was born.  On July 24, 1924 she was united in marriage to Joe Probasto, of Clarinda, Iowa. One infant

son, Kenneth Dale, was taken into their home, and reared to manhood.

She attended Sunday school and church at the Blue Grove Church of Christ, of which she became a member very early in life, in her later years she moved her membership to the Lenox Church of Christ, where she remained a faithful and active member until her health failed.

She belonged to the Thursday Girls organization of the church

and was a 25-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

She was always ready and willing to lend a helping hand to

both organizations. She was also a member of her neighborhood club, the Happy Hour club, which she enjoyed very much.

She leaves to mourn her passing, her husband; one daughter,

Edith Munshower of Denver, Colo., one son, Kenneth Probasco of Creston; her aged father, Clyde M. Whipple and stepmother, Bertha Whipple of Sharpsburg; one sister, Mrs. George Beemer of Gravity; two nephews, Cleo Boltinghouse, wife and daughter Mae of Sewal

and Dr. M. R. Beemer, wife and family of Corning; one niece, Dorothy Rainforth, husband and son Larry Gene of Sharpsburg; besides a host of other relatives and friends who were numbered by those who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Mrs. Clyde M. Whipple on Oct. 15, 1941 and by two sisters, Mrs. Mae Boltinghouse on May 27, 1915 and Lucy who died in infancy; also by one dearly beloved Aunt Mary who passed away on Dec. 26. 1942.

Hazel was a good wife and mother, a good friend and a good neighbor, always ready and willing to lend a helping hand and will be greatly missed in her home, in the community and by her loved ones.

Prugh, John R. -

 John R. Prugh, 65, Bedford furniture and hardware dealer ended his life there Monday afternoon with a 410 gauge shotgun, Coroner Earl Stone said.  He had been in ill health since January 1. The shooting took place in his warehouse.

Surviving are his wife and two sons.  Mr. Prugh had been in the

furniture and hardware business in Bedford for 30 years.

Reish, Geri Lynn -

Graveside services were conducted Sunday at Osceola, for the infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Reish. The Arnold Funeral Home was in charge, with the service being conducted by the Rev. H. D. Butts.

Geri Lynn, infant daughter of Lowell and Lorene Reish, was

born at Rosary hospital in Corning, Thursday, Aug. 16. She

was later removed to Children's Hospital at Omaha, Neb., where

she died Saturday at 1 a. m. Besides her parents she is survived

by a sister Judy.

Roberts, George D. -

George Roberts, 59, passed away at 8:30 a. m. Sunday at his home in Vancouver, Wash. Mr. Roberts had suffered from a heart condition.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Friday at the Christian church in Gravity, with interment in the Gravity cemetery.

Surviving are his wife and two sons; Cleo of Lenox, Densel of Hawarden and one daughter, Berdine of Vancouver, Wash.; two brothers, William of San Diego, Calif., and Tom of Bedford; one sister, Mary Meredith of Bedford; two grandsons and one granddaughter.

Mr. and Mrs. Roberts had just visited in this vicinity during the summer, and their grandson Tony Roberts, had returned home with them to spend some time. Mr. and Mrs. Cleo Roberts had driven to Vancouver before the opening of school, and Tony accompanied them home.

Roberts, George D. -

George D. Roberts, son of Robert E. and Nancy Roberts, was born April the 18th, 1892 at DeKalb, Missouri, and passed this life Sept. 16, 1951, at St. Joseph Hospital in Vancouver, Washington,

He spent his boyhood days on a farm near DeKalb, Mo. On March

14, 1914 he was married to Miss Bessie Konecne at Bedford,

Iowa. He joined the Oak Hill Christian Church in 1920. After

farming some years in Taylor county, they moved to Vancouver,

Washington in 1943.

These later years he spent in the employ of the Oregon State

Highway Department. During the past year his health began

to fail.

He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife; three sons and their wives whom he cherished as his own daughters—Mr. and Mrs. Cleo Roberts of Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Densen Roberts of Hawarden, and Mr. and Mrs. Berdine Roberts of Vancouver, Washington; two grandsons and one granddaughter; two brothers, William of Los Angeles, Calif., and Tom of Bedford; one sister, Mrs. Clarence Meredith of Bedford;

and one step-sister, Mrs. Betty Lovelace of DeKalb, Mo., besides

other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held Friday at the Christian church in Gravity, with burial in the Gravity cemetery. The Rev. H. D. Butts of Lenox was in charge of services, with music being furnished by Gordon Hill. Pallbearers were Cherald Roberts, Howard Meredith,  Dean Konecne, Carrol Konecne and Darrel Baker.

Rogers, Charles W. -

Charles W. Rogers, son of Robert and Mary Jane Rogers was born October 25th, 1861, near Elv Iowa in Linn, county, and passed from this life at his home in Creston, Wednesday, January 2, 1952 at the age of 90 years, 2 months and 8 days.  He had been seriously ill the past three weeks.

On February 25, 1886 he was united in marriage with Miss

Elizabeth Hanah Scott of his home community. To this union

nine children were born three of whom preceded their parents in death: Ray m 1919 Effie Gibson in 1920 and Vera Weatherman in 1936.

Following their marriage they came to live on the farm near Lenox where they made their home for 46 years, after which they moved to Leon, lowa, where they lived until 1944 when they moved to Creston.  Mrs. Rogers preceded her husband  in death April 10, 1950.

They were members of the Methodist church.  Charles was a member of the Masonic Order.

Surviving are six children: Erney of Prescott, Alpha of Shannon City, Mrs. Mary McGregor of Prescott, Robert of Lenox, Orville and Mrs. Faye Hockett of Lenox.  Also eight grandchildren, six great-grand-

1 children, and the many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted from the Arnold Funeral Home, Saturday January 5th at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Harold Butts officiating.  Music was furnished by Rolland Buxton with Mrs. Norma Paymal at the piano.  Pallbearers were Leo Caskey, A.I. From the Nov, 2 issue of the Wichita, Kans., Eagle, comes the following death notice: Funeral services for Mrs. Minnie lola Rossiter, age 37, of 115 1/2 South West, who died Tuesday, will be held Saturday at 2 p. m., in the Cochran mortuary chapel, Rev. George D. McClelland, pastor of Immanuel Baptist church, will officiate. Burial will be at Wichita Park cemetery. She is survived by her husband, Arthur Melvin, at home; two daughters, Juanita May Clark, 1450 Park Place, and Beverly Ann, at home ; two sons,

Ray Ronald and Ivan Laverne, at home; one brother, Ivan Moore, Marlon, Iowa; her mother, Emaline Moore, Prescott, Iowa; and two grandchildren.  The deceased is the daughter of Ross and Emaline Moore, long a resident of this vicinity.  Her, husband, A. M. Rossiter.

Shaw, Mary Eleanor Jefferson -

Mary Eleanor Jefferson, daughter of William and Elizabeth  Jefferson, was born near Woodbine, Iowa, on July 19, 1887 and departed this life at her home in Lenox, Iowa, May 5, 1951 of an acute heart ailment.

She grew to womanhood in Woodbine and attended the normal school there. She was employed for many years as a telephone operator in Woodbine and Modale. At an early age she united with the Christian church and took an active part in all church activities, especially the young peoples work in Modale, where for a number of

years she taught a class of teenage boys and worked untiringly

with the Junior Christian Endeavor.

She was united in marriage to the Rev. Christopher Shaw of Modale, Nov. 19, 1929 at Woodbine. The tragic accident which followed their wedding day left them both in frail health and forced her to gradually give up her church activities. Rev. and Mrs. Shaw moved to Lenox following the former's retirement, and they made their home here for the remaining years. Death came to the Rev. Shaw Feb. 21,

1947. Mrs. Shaw had been in poor health for a number of years, and the kindness of Miss Annola Toler and a host of other friends was deeply appreciated by her and her loved ones.

Left to mourn her passing are four sisters and two brothers: Mrs. Myrtle Denney, Redding; Mrs. Edith Arbaugh, Iowa City; Mrs. Lora White, Utica, Mich.; Etta A. Jefferson, Iowa City; Wm. M. Jefferson, Grant City Mo.; Luke Jefferson, Binghamton, New York. Also surviving are a step-son, George Shaw of Los Angeles, Calif., besides a number of nieces and nephew and step-children. She will remembered as a devoted and loving wife and sister.

Shay, Gertrude Shields -

Word has been received in Clearfield of the death of Mrs. Chas. Shay, 74, the former Gertrude Shields, in Des Moines on July 4th, after an illness of three years. She was a long-time resident of Ringgold county and was known in the Clearfield vicinity. Funeral services were held July 6th in St. Augustine church in Des Moines. She is survived by her husband, three sons, Ralph and Paul of Des Moines and Edward of Burbank, Calif.; one daughter, Lucille McGrath of San Bernadino, Calif.; also one brother, Tom Shields of Des Moines and a sister, Mrs. R. C Bevington of Mt. Ayr.

Shipley, Helen Emma Pettitt -

Funeral services will be conducted here Friday at 2 p. m. at the Methodist church for Mrs. Helen Shipley, 78, who passed away at 8 a. m. Tuesday at the home of a friend, Mrs. Jake Heyl at Corydon. Death was attributed to a heart attack. Following services here, interment will be at Corydon. Immediate survivors are three sons, Frank of Lenox, Robert S. of Phoenix, Ariz., and Lawrence of Cleveland, Ohio; and a daughter, Mrs. N. D. Cole of New York City,

N. Y.

Mrs. Shipley was prominent in Lenox club and church work,

and her sudden death came as a great shock to her many friends.

Shipley, Helen Emma Pettitt -

Helen Emma Pettitt was born in Corydon, Iowa, on May 6, 1873 to Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Pettitt, who both passed on while she was a very young child. In accordance with their wishes she was raised by Mr. and Mrs. Samuel McCullough of Corydon.  She received her schooling and graduated from high school in Corydon, after which she taught school for one year.

On February 2, 1896, she was united in marriage to Edgar Poe

Shipley, who operated a drug store in Corydon until 1914, when the family moved to Des Moines. To this union five children were born: Helen, who died in infancy, Robert of Phoenix, Arizona, Frank of Lenox, Madge (Mrs. N. D. Cole) of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Lawrence of Cleveland, Ohio.

After a long residence in Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. Shipley spent some time in Creston with Frank, and in El Paso, Texas, and Phoenix, Arizona, with Robert and his family. In July, 1939, her husband passed away at Phoenix, and in April, 1946, she came to Lenox where she made her home with Frank. Her last few days were spent

visiting old friends and neighbors in Corydon, among the familiar scenes of her childhood and early life which she always loved. It was there that she quietly departed this life on the morning of June 19th.

Uniting with the Methodist church at an early age, she remained

loyal and steadfast throughout her long and useful life. In addition to her four children she leaves eight grandchildren and one great grandchild, as well as a host of loyal friends and neighbors.

Always a loving, patient mother, and a kindly, cheerful friend, her memory will long be cherished by those she has left behind.

Services were conducted at the Lenox Methodist church on Friday, June 22, by the Rev. H.D. Butts. Interment in Corydon

Soma, John -

John Soma, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. T. Soma, died Jan. 12th in Springfield, Ill., at the age of 60 years.  Mr. Soma was a native of

Iowa and spent the greater portion of his life in Clearfield. He

followed the trade of painting and was known for his excellent

work.

He is survived by his wife and three children of Springfield,

Ill., one brother, Fred Soma of Gravity and a sister, Mrs. Nellie Herring of Clearfield.

Funeral services and burial were in Springfield, Ill.

Sprouse, Irven Elmer -

(From the Dickey County Leader, Ellendale, N. Dak.) Funeral services were held on Saturday at 2 p. m. at the Presbyterian

church for Irven E. Sprouse, who died Wednesday evening at Little Eagle, S. Dak., of an acute heart attack.  Rev. Converse, pastor of the

church, officiated and interment was made in the Ellendale

Cemetery. Pallbearers were Carl Carlson, Frank Brown, Wm. Johnson, Louis Fleming, Merle Gerden and Ted Griffin.

Irven Elmer Sprouse, son of George F. and Sarah A. Sprouse,

was born January 11, 1880, at Cambridge, Ill.  When a young boy, the family moved to Nebraska and later to Lenox, Iowa, where he grew to young manhood.

In 1906 he came Dickey county and worked on various farms until 1912, when he went to Terry, Mont., where he homesteaded and lived for seven years.

In the summer of 1919 he returned to Ellendale and operated

the Charlie Scott farm for nearly 12 years. After that he resumed his farming,, but lived with relatives until five years ago when he moved to Little Eagle to make his home with his brother, Don.

His father passed away when he was a young man, and his mother made her home with him until her death in 1926.  Two other brothers, Oliver and Vernon preceded him in death.

He is survived by one sister, Mrs. (Pearl) Frank Filbert of Ellendale, and two brothers, Floyd of Brazil, Ind. and Don of Little Eagle, S. Dak., and four sisters-in-law, Mrs. Kate Sprouse of Fargo, N. Dak., Mrs. Grace Sprouse of Ellendale, Mrs. Hazel Sprouse of Brazil, Ind. and Edith Sprouse of Little Eagle, S. Dak., and one brother-in-law,

Frank Filbert of Ellendale; also several nieces and nephews and a

host of friends.

Out-of-town relatives and friends to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Don Sprouse and Donna of Little Eagle, S. Dak.; Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Sprouse of Brazil, Ind.; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Stewart and family of Drayton, N. Dak.; Mr. and Mrs. Walter Brueggemann of

Swan, Charles L. -

Charles J. Swan was born to Movus and Phiannah Kepner Swan, Jan. 27, 1875 at Byron Ill., and passed from this life June 19th, 1951, at his home in Clearfield, Iowa, aged 76 year, four months and 22 days.

Dr. Swan moved to Bridgewater, S. Dak., with his parents when he was five years old. He graduated from the Bridgewater schools and then attended state normal at Madison, S. Dak. and state normal at Wheaton, Ill.  He was a teacher for seven years in South Dakota. He entered the State University of Iowa and graduated from the College of Dentistry in 1903. He practiced in Grinnell and Belle Plaine one year each and two years in Diagonal before coming to Clearfield in 1907.

Besides his faithful and beloved wife, he leaves to mourn his departure Mary [?] of New Market, [?] Zeller of Des Moines, Lois [?] of Indianola, Charles of Peoria, Ill. and Susan [?] of San Clemente, Calif. and [?] Swan of Red Oak, also 11 grandchildren.

Dr. Swan was raised in the Presbyterian church as a boy and became a member of the Methodist church at Clearfield in 1914 and was a regular attendant as long as his health permitted.

Dr. Swan was a member of the Masonic Fraternity and received

his 50 year certificate on May 19, 1949. He took an active interest in Community work. He was on the town council, being one of the main promoters of Highway 25 and had a great desire to see it concreted. He was president of the community club at one time and promoted

the Red Cross and other worthwhile activities. He served on the school board for 24 years and acted as president for many years.

He has been greatly missed in community activities since illness

caused his retirement, a little over a year ago and all have been brought to realize how much he contributed to the community. We join with the family in paying respect to his memory.

Funeral services were held at the Clearfield Methodist church

June 21st, 1951 at 2 p. m.. Clergyman Rev. C. E. McPherson assisted

by Rev. C. McCallom of Gravity. Burial was made in the Clearfield cemetery with Masonic rites by Don Foreman of Gravity.

Walter Swank, father of Mrs. Alfred Adolphsen, passed away at his home in Tingley on Wednesday, Sept. 26th. He had been ill for six months with a heart ailment. Turner, Felicia –

Felicia Turner died Saturday at the home of her sister, Mrs. Frank Green in Clearfield.  She had made her home with her sister for the past several years.

Funeral services were held at the Christian church there a 2 p.m. Monday, Rev. Leroy Cronkhite officiating.  Burial was in Blue Grove Cemetery, south of Lenox.

Miss Turner is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Green of Clearfield and Mrs. Joe Cochran of Sharpsburg.

She had formerly lived in the Lenox and Sharpsburg vicinity, and had also lived in New York City and Chicago.

Turner, Felicia W. -

Felicia W. Turner, daughter of John and Mary Turner, was born in Birmingham, England, Feb. 21, 1871 and departed this life Jan. 12, 1952 at the home of' her sister, Mrs. Frank Green in Clearfield at the age of 80 years.

The family, upon coming to America, located near St. Louis, later moving to a farm near Lenox. The mother died in 1883 and Felicia assumed the care of the family. Miss Turner was assistant postmistress in Lenox for several years and attended college in Omaha and Fremont, Neb.  She was connected with the Perfield School of Music and taught in Chicago and New York, City. She united with the Episcopalian church in her youth.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Walter and Henry Turner.  Surviving are four sisters: Nellie Cochran of Sharpsburg,

Florence Deaver of Independence, Ore., Mable Green of Clearfield

and Ethel Dunbar of Lenox; also one brother Frank Turner of

Independence, Ore.; nieces and nephews, other relatives and a

host of friends.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Jan. 14, at the Christian

church, Rev. LeRoy Cronkhite officiating. Burial in Blue Grove cemetery.

Mrs. Elda Wilson, 77, died at her home south of Clearfield, Thursday at 3:40 a.m.  She had been ill since the previous day.


Survivors are one son, Leon Wilson of Clearfield, one daughter, Velma Grant, Clearfield, grandson L. Joe B. Wood, 50, former rural mail carrier, postmaster and

merchant here, died Wednesday in a hospital in Phoenix, Ariz.

Mr. Wood also operated a cleaning establishment in Corning

before retiring because of his health. He had planned to move

his family to Phoenix. He was master of the Masonic lodge

here. Surviving are his wife, a daughter, two brothers and one.

Wood, Joe B. -

J. B. Wood, youngest son of Warner and Lora Wood, was born in Bolckow, Missouri, on June 21, 1899 and departed this life Oct. 10, 1951 at the Good Samaritan hospital in Phoenix, Arizona.

"Joe," as he was known to all, spent his childhood in the home at Bolckow, attended the public schools there and later attended the University of Missouri for three years. After college he entered the mercantile business, having stores at Blockton, Clearfield and Lenox.

He was postmaster in Lenox for a number of years, later transferring

to a rural route. He also operated a cleaning establishment in Corning before retiring because of his health. He had purchased a tourist camp in Phoenix, and left here a week before his death to take over the camp.

On Dec. 23, 1930, he was united in marriage to Agnes Ann

Lepley. To this union one daughter, Jo Ann, was born. He was a member of the Church of Christ at Bolckow, Mo., transferring his membership to the Lenox church when he came here. He was a past

master of the Masonic lodge and a. charter member of the Rotary club.

During the years he spent in the localities where he lived, he made many friends and was loved and respected by all who knew him.

He leaves to mourn his passing his wife Agnes, daughter Jo Ann, two brothers, Dr. W. L. Wood of Bolckow, Mo. and Authella Wood of Long Beach,. Calif.; one sister, Cleopatra of Long Beach, Calif.; many nieces

and nephews who will always remember his kindness. He was a good husband, a devoted father and a loyal friend.

Funeral services were conducted by the Rev, Charles Hagee at the Arnold Funeral Home on Sunday, Oct. 14. Music, Beautiful Isle" and "City Four Square" was furnished by Roland Buxton with Ruth Boltinghouse at the piano. Masonic services were conducted at the

grave, with interment in the Lenox cemetery. Pallbearers were George Trost, Howard Riley, Howard Key, Wenie Garten, George Davison and Clark Taylor

Worthington, Eddie Sanford

Eddie Sanford Worthington was born to Vincent and Hannah

Hartley Worthington, Nov. 14, 1876 at Maloy, Iowa, and passed from this life April 18, 1951, aged 74 years, 5 months and 4 days-

He was united in marriage to Anna Mae Baxter at Maloy, la.,

March 3, 1903. Mrs. Worthington preceded him in death, Nov. 3,

1934.

Six daughters, all of whom survive, were born to this union:

Mildred Saville, Redding. Iowa, Gail Rothmeyer, Milwaukee, Wis.; Madge Nelson and Jean Harvey of Clearfield; Edwilda Coursey, San Francisco, Calif. and Pauline Worthington of Roswell, New Mexico.

Mr. Worthington farmed near Maloy and Clearfield all his life. He attended the Baptist church in his early days and professed that faith all his life.  Mr. Worthington was a good husband and father, careful in the upbringing of his daughters and deeply devoted to his grandchildren. He was a highly respected and helpful neighbor

always ready to lend assistance.  Extremely honest himself, he

resented deception in others and protected the interests of his friends. He will be missed by those who knew him best.

Besides the six daughters, he is survived by nine grandchildren

and two brothers, Sam Worthington of Maloy and John of Clarinda.

Funeral services were held Saturday, April 21 at the Methodist

church in Clarinda. Clergymen were F. H. Cowles of Bedford and Rev. C. E. McPherson.

Interment was in Clearfield cemetery.

Wurster, William -

William Wurster was born on May 7, 1874 in Dettingen, Ger-

Imany, the youngest son of John and Barbara Wurster. At the age

of fourteen, he was confirmed in the Lutheran church in Germany, and a year later came to the United States and Lenox, Iowa, near where he lived for 63 years.

On January 21, 187 he was united in marriage with Freda Lieb, and to this union were born nine children, of which five are living: John J, Herman A., Walter G., and George F. Wurster all of Lenox, and Mrs. Anna Brady of Des Moines. His parents, his brothers and four children preceded him in death .as did his wife, who died on Nov 27, 1934.

Mr. Wurster passed away after a long illness on January 2, 1952, leaving five children, 10 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. 

Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Willard Morris, Friday, January 4.  Music was furnished by Mrs. Norma Paymal and Mrs. Marcia Bender.  Pallbearers were Fred Wurster, Clyde Owens, Abe Beck, Henry Beck, Fred House and Clyde Davis.  Interment in Fairview cemetery.

Zaruba, Jerry -

Funeral services were .held at Diagonal at 2 p. m. Saturday for

Jerry Zaruba, 77, who died at his home there Thursday. Burial

was in the Bohemian cemetery southeast of Diagonal. He is survived by his wife, a son Lawrence of Diagonal and a daughter Irene in California.

He was a farmer for many years but had retired and had lived in

town for the past three years.  He had made a miniature United States on his farm. He had traveled widely and brought home a rare collection of rocks to use in this interesting display.  Friends also brought him rocks from various states.  He was offered one thousand dollars to build a replica of this United States for another man but was too busy farming, having made his own during spare

time. He was also known as a fine musician and lover of music

his daughter, Irene also being an accomplished musician
