Beemer, Florence Erdine Johnson -
Mrs. G. W.
Beemer of Gravity, mother of Herm Beemer of Lenox, passed away Sunday at her home
in Gravity, following a three weeks illness. Mrs. Beemer had reached the age of 66 years, 6
months and 15 days.
She is survived
by her husband, George W. Beemer; 4 sons, Herm of Lenox and Homer, Hudson and
Horace of Gravity; eight grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Luna Morris of San Diego,
Calif.; and Mrs. Lottie McCollum of Gravity, and two brothers, E. J. and W. A.
Johnson of Gravity.
Funeral
services were held at the Christian church in Gravity Tuesday and burial was
made at Gravity.
Florence Erdine Johnson, daughter of H. H. and Martha Johnson, was
born in Taylor County on July 29, 1873. On
March 30, 1892 she was married to George W. Beemer. They lived on a farm until 17 years ago when they moved
to Gravity.
She joined
the Oak Hill Church in 1914 and was a member of the Christian church at the
time of her death.

Bruington, Newton Harrison “Harry” -
Services
were conducted at the Arnold Funeral Home Sunday afternoon for Harry Bruington who passed away at his home southeast of Lenox
Thursday morning. Mr. Bruington had been in failing health for many years
suffering from heart trouble. He had
been confined to his bed for the past month. Services were in charge of the Rev. A.L. Davidson and the Rev. E.F. Hagee. Burial was
made at Lenox.
Newton
Harrison Bruington was the oldest child of Eugene and
Carrie Burnett Bruington. He was born in Warren County, Illinois July
29, 1881, and passed away Thursday, Dec. 28 [1939] at the age of 58 years, 4
months and 29 days.
At the age
of 14 he moved to the Lenox neighborhood. On Christmas day he was united in marriage to Blanche Ethel Tedford, the oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Tedford. The same
minister who officiated the wedding ceremony lead the
solemn funeral service.
Three
children were born: Tedford L. of Lenox, Grace Bruington Morris who passed away March 5, 1937 and Ray
Eugene of Lenox.
Mr. Bruington is survived by his devoted mother, Mrs. Carrie Bruington of Lenox, his bereaved and beloved wife and two
children, Tedford and Ray, three grandchildren,
Marjorie and Blanche Morris of Kansas City and Gordon Dee of Lenox, one
brother, W.D. of Lark, North Dakota; four sisters, Mrs. Neva Elly of Spokane, Washington; Mrs. Fern Edmonds of
Winnemucca, Nevada; Mrs. Francis Wilson of Lake Crystal, Minn.; and Mrs. Hazel
Wynn of Creston, Ia., and also a host of other relatives and friends.

Buxton, Mary Woodward -
Funeral
services were held at the Stringtown church Tuesday afternoon,
May 7 [1940]
for Mrs. Mary Buxton, long time resident of Lenox who died Sunday, May 5 [1940]
at the home of her daughter Mrs. Thelma Bethke, with
whom she made her home. Mrs. Buxton was 70 years of age.
Services
were conducted by the Rev. E. F. Hagee, pastor of the
Church of Christ of Lenox assisted by Rev. Chase of Kent and burial was made in
the Fairview cemetery..
Mary
Buxton, daughter of Joel and Sarah Woodward, was born in Illinois, August 24,
1869 and died at the age of 70 years, 8 months and 11 days.
At
an early age she united with the. church of Stringtown and was a faithful member until her death.
In
August 1891 she was united in marriage to Robert Buxton who preceded her in
death February 20, 1926. Seven children
were born, Alfred and Clifford of Kent; Lloyd of Creston; Rolland of Lenox;
Mrs. Donald Hill of Corning; Mrs. Lloyd Case and Mrs. Thelma Bethke of Lenox.
Mrs.
Buxton raised two families. She was the
oldest daughter when her own mother passed away. She then took the
responsibility of raising her younger brothers and sisters, which task she
completed in a very remarkable way.
Besides
her children she is survived by fifteen grandchildren, five brothers and one
sister-in-law, Mary Jane Buxton of Lenox. One brother and one sister preceded her
in death.

Cameron, George Raymond -
Funeral
services were conducted Monday morning at 10 o'clock at the St. Patrick's
church in Lenox for Ray Cameron who passed away in the St. Joseph, Mo. hospital
Saturday morning. Mr. Cameron had been
failing in health for many years suffering from diabetes and heart trouble. He had
been confined to his bed for the past three months. Services were in charge of
the Rev. P. J. McStay and burial was made at Lenox.
George
Raymond Cameron, son of Elvin, and Margaret Cameron, was born Dec. 23, 1689
near Lenox and passed away Saturday, Jan. 6 [1940] at the age of 50 years and
14 days.
On January
7, 1915, he was united in marriage to Margaret Ellen House. Four children were
born, Raymond Cecil who died in infancy, Lucille, Leila and Lloyd.
He is
survived by his devoted parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Cameron, his loving wife
and three children, Leila and Lloyd at home and Mrs. Lucille Miller of
Clearfield, also one sister, Mrs Mae Wurster and a host of other relatives and friends.
Mr. Cameron
loved his home and was a devoted husband and father.

Cottrell,
James C. -
James C. Cottrell, son of Mr. Truman and Rachel Ann Cottrell, was born
August 16, 1883 and died at the University hospital in Iowa City Wednesday April
24, 1940 at the age of 56 years, 8 months and 8 days.
All of his life, except a few intermittent years, was spent on the old homestead
near Calvary Church where he was born.
On March 14, 1906 he was united in marriage to Luella Beach and they made their home on
the farm that his father had established. He was always a tender, loving and
kindly husband.
In 1915 he and his wife became members of the Calvary Methodist church.
He helped organize an Epworth League there, and was interested in the Bible School
held in the homes and was a faithful attendant. In recent years he did not
attend church, due to failing health
but received comfort from the radio sermons and devoted a great his time
studying the Bible.
Surviving are his wife, four uncles, six cousins and many friends and
neighbors:
Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Lenox Saturday,
April 27 [1940] at 2 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. McKenzie of
Clearfield. Interment was in the Lenox Cemetery.

Davis,
A.C. -
A. C. Davis, father of Mrs. Oscar Yankey of
Lenox, passed away at his farm home west of Gravity Thursday, March 14 [1940]
following only a few days illness. Mr. Davis was 87 years old.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Ida McFarland and Mrs. Winnie
Peterson of Omaha and Mrs. Aurora Yankey of Lenox and
two sons, Frank Davis ol Gravity and Dorte L. Davis of Weslaco, Tex. The latter was unable to
attend the funeral services.
Also surviving are seven grandchildren and six-great grandchildren. Funeral
services were held at the Methodist church in Gravity Saturday, March 16
[1940], conducted by the Rev. Biggerstaff. Interment was made in the Gravity Cemetery.

Dougan, J. O. -
J. O. Dougan, father of H. C. Dougan of
Lenox, died suddenly at Bolckow, Mo., while on his
way to his drug store Sunday morning. He had been in the drug business in Bolckow for more than fifty years.
Mr. Dougan is survived by his wife and four sons, H. C. Dougan of Lenox, Don Dougan of
Hamburg, la., Bennett Dougan of Craig, Mo., and James Dougan of Rosendale, Mo. A foster son Verne Retailing, also survives.
Mr. Dougan was born Nov. 10 1860 and was 79 years old. Funeral
services were held a the Methodist church in Bolckow Tuesday, Jan. 16 [1940], at 2:30, and were conducted by the Rev. Chas Carrico, assisted by the Rev. Vaughn Means. Burial was made
in the Bolckow cemetery.

Estella Marietta Bardwell –
Mrs. Estella Granger passed away at the home of her daughter and
son-in-law, Mr. and .Mrs. B. C. Beckett Sunday, April 14 [1940]. Mrs. Granger
had reached the advanced age of 84 years, 8 months and 17 days.
Funeral services were conducted at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Beckett
Tuesday afternoon, April 16 [1940], at 1:30 in charge of the Rev. Earl Moneymaker.
Interment was made in the Lenox cemetery.
Estella Marrietta Bardwell, the daughter of
Joel and Malinda Bardwell, was born at Sheldbourne, Mass.
July 28, 1355. At the age of three years she moved to Altoona, Ill. with her
parents. In early life she was converted.
In 1876 she was united in marriage to John Leavitt Granger. Six children
were born, Daniel S., Fredrick B., Franklin L., Alice S., Jane L., and Maude M.
Her husband and five children preceded her in death. One daughter, Mrs. Ben C.
Beckett, with whom she made her home, survives.
Also surviving are one brother, Austin J.
Bardwell of. Desoto, Kans., one son-in-law, Ben O. Beckett, Lenox, a
daughter-in-law, Mrs. Martha M. Granger of Mason City, seven grand-children, five
great grand-children, a number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends

Gray, James
Franklin “Frank” -
Funeral
services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Methodist church in Ellston, for Frank Gray who died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Edith Woollums of Ellston, May 20,
1940. Mr. Gray
lived on a farm near Lenox some years ago. He was 85 years old at the time of his death.
James
Franklin Gray, son of James and Mary Ann Gray, was born Nov. 26, 1854, near
Pittsburg, Penn, He was married to Ida M. Case on Dec. 25, 1883 and six
children were born. His wife and a daughter, Gertrude Baker, preceded him in
death in August 1931 and January, 1939, respectively.
At
the age of 23 he came to Iowa and secured work on the construction of the C. B.
&. Q. railroad which runs from Leon through Davis City. Later he began farming near Lenox and with
the exception of a year spent in Nebraska he has lived the remainder his life
in southern Iowa.
He
was brought up in the faith of the old school Presbyterian but later changed
his membership to the Baptist church. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Fleda Nesbit,
San Fernando, Calif. and Mrs. Edith Woollums, Ellston, la.; three
sons, Morris, Kellerton, la. and Frank and Ralph, Ellston, la.; twelve grandchildren,
five great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Hewitt,
Ann Jane Butler Thompson – Mrs. Ann Jane Hewitt, 80, resident of the
community of Kent since 1855, passed away in her sleep at her home Tuesday
morning. Mrs. Hewitt had been in failing
health for over a year.
Ann Jane Butler, daughter of Thomas and Rachel Butler was born in
Jefferson County, Iowa, near Batavia on Feb. 3, 1851. She was married Feb. 17, 1873 to Joseph M.
Thompson who died May 23, 1883. Two sons
were born, Arthur W. Thompson who died in infancy and John E. Thompson with
whom she made her home.
She came to Union County as a young woman and moved to Adams County in
the year 1890, residing in this county the remainder of her life.
On Sept. 16, 1890 she was married to James S. Hewitt, who died March 11,
1894. One daughter was born, Mrs. Cecil Maharry, who lives near Clearfield.
One brother Edwin and two sisters, Rachel and Mary preceded her in
death. Two brothers, William and John
Butler and one sister, Lizzie Butler, all of Lenox and one brother, Walter
Butler of Creston survive.

Holben, Fred Eugene -
Fred Eugene Holben died at his home in Lenox
Monday, June 10 [1940], at the age of 77 years, 7 months and 1 day. He was born
Nov. 9, 1862. His death came two years to the day after the death of his son
Herman.
Mr. Holben had been in poor health for a long
time but had been confined to his bed for only a few weeks. Funeral services
were held Wednesday afternoon at the Arnold Funeral Home in Lenox and were
conducted by the Rev. F. J. Robins of the Methodist church. Burial was made in
Evergreen cemetery at Prescott, the former home of the Holben family.
Frederick Eugene Holben was born at Prattsville, Mich., Nov. 9, 1862. The family moved, during his
youth, to Vandalia, Ill. and later to Boonville and Sedalia, Mo., where he spent his childhood.
When he was 13 the family moved to a farm in Iowa, east of Prescott, where he
grew to manhood. Later the family moved into Prescott. After finishing his
schooling he taught school for several years and later was engaged in the
mercantile business in Prescott and Carl, la. for 20
years. In 1884 he was married to Clara
Louise Blackburn. Four children were born to them: Ethel B. Leuty,
Emma J. French, Blanche Olive Higbee and Herman Eugene Holben. Ethel and Herman preceeded him in death.
In addition to his wife and two children he is survived by five
grandchildren: Mary Ashman, San Diego, Calif., Harvey French, Susanville, Calif., Dorothy Lawrence, Globe, Ariz., Pauline Higbee, Des
Moines, and Eugene Holben, Lenox. Three great
grandchildren, Herbert Lee Ashman, Fred and Gale French, also survive.
Mr. Holben had been in poor health for over a
year and was gravely ill for the last two weeks. He passed away Monday, June 10,
1940, at 4 p. m., two years to the day and hour after the death of his son
Herman.

Kilby, William James - William
James Kilby, youngest son of William and Rhoda Kilby, was born at Long Grove, Scott County, Iowa on March
4, 1868.
At the age of 72 years and 8 days, he passed away at his home on Marh 12 [1940] during an illness caused by cerebral hemorrage. One brother and two sisters died in infancy;
Alfred and Ellen in England and Alice at Long Grove.
At the age of seven he came with his parents to Lenox which was at that
time a very small town. The early years of his life were spent on a farm 4
miles west of Lenox.
He was united in marriage to Frances Hockabout on Feb. 12, 1891. Six children were born: Leslie J., Mae, Ruth, Vera. Bernice and Glen William. His father and mother and son,
Glen, preceded him in death.
His married life was spent on a farm west of Lenox until 1917 when the
family came to Lenox where they have since resided. At the age of 19 he united
with the Christian church at Blue Grove and was a member of that church until
1937 when he transferred his membership to the Church of Christ in Lenox.
He is survived by his wife, one son and daughter-in-law, four daughters,
eight grandchildren land five great grandchildren, and many loving friends.
Funeral services were held at the in Lenox Church of Christ conducted by
the Rev. E. F. Hagee, assisted by Rev. Shaw Thursday
afternoon. Burial was made in Fairview cemetery.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, April 6 [1940] at the
Methodist church in Lenox for James R. Lock who died Thursday, April 4 [1940].
The services were conducted by the Rev. F. J. Robins. Interment was made in the
Fairview cemetery.
James R. Locke was born in Mayfield township, DeKalb county, lll. on May 22, 1862 and
died at his home in south Lenox April 4, 1940 at the age of 77 years, 10 months
and 12 days.
He spent his early manhood on a farm in Illinois and was united in
Marriage to Miss Emma Clark on October 12, 1888. To them were born five sons,
one of whom preceded him in death. Three years after his marriage he moved to
Iowa and spent the remainder of his life in the vicinity of Kent and Lenox,
residing in Lenox for the past 21 years.
About forty years ago he united with the Presbyterian church in Lenox but later transferred his membership to the Methodist church in Kent
while living in that vicinity and from there he transferred to the Methodist church
at Bedford.
Mr. Lock had been engaged in farming all of his life until ill health
forced him to retire. For the past two years he had been a sufferer of heart
ailment and endured much pain. He was a kind neighbor, a good husband and
father and a patient sufferer in affliction.
He is survived by his wife and four sons, Geo. R. of DeKalb, Ill., Frank
C. and W. R. of Creston and Roy H. of Mason City, la. Besides these he leaves four brothers Thomas and
Robert Lock of Mason City. and Robert [?] and Chas Lock of
Rockford, Ill., four sisters Mrs. Clara
Rogers of Lenox; Mrs. Nancy Ashelford of Byron, Illinois
Mrs. Mary Wetz of De Kalb, Ill.; and Mrs. Alice
Switzer of Chicago. Four grandchildren and five great grandchildren survive.

McLaury, Glenn Eugene -
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, May 1, [1940] at the
Barber Funeral Home for Glenn McLaury who passed away
at his home in west Lenox Monday, April 29, 1940, at the age of 30 years, 11
months and 24 days.
Glenn Eugene McLaury, son of Mr. and Mrs.
James T. McLaury was born in Clearfield. la., May 5,
1909. He was united in marriage to Miss Leota Ruckman on June 14, 1930. Three children were born. Wilma
Jean, Donald Lee and Elsie May, all of whom survive.
Mr. McLaury lived in and around Clearfield all
his life until in July 1936 when he and his family moved to Lenox where he resided
until his death.
He is survived by his wife and three children, his parents, Mr. and Mrs.
James T. McLaury of Clearfield; two brothers,
Clifford McLaury of Lenox and Merritt McLaury of Kansas City Mo.; three sisters, Mrs. Roy Graves
of Conway, Ia., Mrs. Charles Cole of Nebraska City Nebr. and Mrs. Ruth Crist of Des Moines and many other relatives and friends.

Menoher, Charles -
Charles Menoher, 81, passed away very suddenly at his home in west
Lenox Saturday evening. Mr. Menoher has been bothered with heart trouble for several
years. Funeral services were held
Tuesday afternoon Jan. 2 [1940] at the Methodist Church in charge of the Rev.
F.J. Robins. Burial was made in the
Fairview Cemetery.
Charles
Blakely Menoher, son of James Gordon and Elizabeth
Blakely Menoher, was born August 24, 1858 near
Fairfield in Jefferson County, Iowa, and passed away at his home in Lenox Dec.
30 [1939} at the age of 81 years, 4 months and 6 days.
When he was
two years old he moved with his parents to Baviere,
Macon County, Missouri. A few years
later the family returned to Jefferson County, Iowa, later locating at Fairfax
in Linn County, where his father died, leaving the mother and the six young
boys, the oldest being in his eleventh year. Charles was the second son and was but eight years old when his father
died. These boys knew early in life what
it meant to “struggle for a living.”
In 1875 the
six boys and their mother came to Taylor County and settled near Gravity where,
before they had all reached manhood had bought and paid for a farm for their
mother. Later better improvements were
made, and for years this was known as the Menoher home.
He was a
partner with his brother John, in the mercantile business in Gravity for
several years. He was married to Miss
Lillie Monahan of Gravity on Aug. 12, 1902. To this union one son, Wade, was born.
The family
had their home in Gravity for a few years, then moved to
Dallam County, Texas where they lived for four years. Coming back to Taylor County in 1913 they
moved to Lenox where have lived ever since, excepting four years spent in
Boulder, Colorado.
He leaves to
mourn his loss his wife, his son Wade of Palmer, Iowa; one grandson, Lloyd
Michael Menoher of Palmer; and three brothers,
William E. and Edmund S of Lake Worth, Florida and Benjamin F. of Lincoln,
Nebr.
Mr. Menoher has been a sincere and earnest Christian. Since young manhood, he has held his
membership in the Methodist Church, and in younger
life was active in the service of his Lord by serving as steward and treasurer
of the church at Gravity for a number of years. He loved his home and fireside, and was a devoted husband and father.

Nelson,
William E. -
William E. Nelson, son of Mathew and Nancy Nelson, deceased, was born in
Washington county, la., May 13, 1873, and passed away
Wednesday, March 27, 1940, at the age of 66 years, 10 months and 14 days, at
the home of his sister, Mrs. George Paymal where he
has made his home for the past 23 years.
On February 26, 1879, he moved to Lenox with his parents where he
resided until his death.
Mr. Nelson was custodian of the First National bank and the Farmer's
& Merchants bank in Lenox for many years and during that time accumulated
many friends.
He is survived by two brothers Ed and Roy of Lenox- three sisters, Mrs.
Geo. Paymal and Mrs. Thomas Manroe of Lenox and Mrs. Clarke Stevens of Cromwell, besides many other relatives.

Robison, Mary Butler -
Funeral
services were held at the Presbyterian church Sunday afternoon for Mrs. Mary
Robison who passed away at her home in Lenox Friday, Jan. 26 [1940]. Rev. Earl
Moneymaker, pastor of the church, assisted by Dr. A. L. Davidson, conducted the
service. Burial was made in the Lenox cemetery.
Mary Butler,
daughter of Thomas and Rachel Butler, was born on Feb. 25, 1853, in Jefferson County,
la. When a child her parents moved to Union County where she grew to womanhood.
On Oct. 20, 1881, she was married to James C. Robison, who preceded her in
death on Dec. 18, 1919.
Three
children were born, two sons dying in infancy. One daughter Elizabeth M. Maharry passed away on Dec. 27 1915. Her step-children,
Elder, Wray and Jennie often bore testimony to her parental care for them as
they knew no other mother. She was also
a mother to her niece, Mrs. Nellie Peterson during the early years of her
childhood.
Surviving
are her two step children, Wray Robison of Oregon and Mrs. Jennie Reeves of Colorado,
two sisters, Miss Lizzie Butler who cared for her during the last several years
and Mrs. Ann Jane Hewitt; three brothers, John C. Butler and Wm. W. Butler, all
of Lenox and Walter. Butler of Creston. She also leaves
a number of nieces and nephews besides other relatives.
Mrs. Robison
was a member of
the Presbyterian church and was faithful in her attendance and duties until
infirmities of age kept her at home. She was very hospitable and was always
ready to help anyone in need or who was sick.

Rogers, Earl -
Earl Rogers,
50, of Gruver, la. died at 6 p. m. Saturday, Jan. 20
[1940] at the home of his parents in Gruver. Mr. Rogers was a former Lenox resident,
residing 3 miles north of Lenox until 1913. He had been an invalid for the past eight
years.
He is
survived by his mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Rogers of Gruver; one daughter, Mrs.
Vivian Ewart of Pomona, Calif., one sister, Mrs. Guy Beggs of Clearfield; a brother, Homer Rogers of Pomona,
Calif.; and two grandchildren. His wife preceded him in death in April, 1931.
Mr. Rogers
was born on. May 23, 1889, at Lenox. He was married March
24, 1908, to Eula B. Dunlap of Lenox, In the spring of 1913 he moved to a farm
at Ryan Lake and then to Pomona in 1925, where he served on the city police
force. He returned to Iowa about eight years ago, after he became an invalid.
Funeral
services were held at Gruver Monday, Jan., 22 [1940], burial was made at
Estherville.

Sanburn, Clara Elizabeth Smith
Funeral
services were conducted Feb. 11 [1940] for Mrs. James E. Sanburn,
at the Stringtown Church for Mrs. James E. Sanburn who died Friday Feb.
9 [1940].
Mrs. Sanburn had been in failing health for several years and
passed away at her home near Conway at the age of 71 years and 4 days.
Clara
Elizabeth Smith, daughter of Jacob and Deborah Smith, was born near Brooks,
Iowa Feb. 5, 1869. On Jan. 31, 1889, he was married to James E. Sanburn. Seven children were born, one daughter, Maude
Straight and a son, James E. Jr. preceding their mother in death.
At the age
of 15 she became a member of the Christian church at Brooks and later transferred
her membership to the Federated church at Stringtown,
where she remained a faithful member until her death.
Besides her
husband and children she is survived by one sister, Mrs. Harry Brown of Corning;
three brothers, William M. Smith, Corning, Calvin H. Smith, Oakland, Calif., and
Lyman Smith of Oregon; one uncle, Lyman Bullock of Corning; ten grandchildren;
two great grandchildren, as well as other relatives and friends.
For the last
ten years Mrs. Sanburn with her husband had made her
home with her son, Lee and wife Mable at Conway

services for Guy Sanders of Blockton, son of Mac
Sanders of Lenox were held at the Arnold Funeral home Wednesday afternoon, Jan.
10 [1940]. Mr. Sanders was found dead in
his car Monday evening, having been overcome by carbon monoxide gas. Services were conducted by the Rev. B. F. Hagee of the Christian Church.
Guy William
Sanders, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mac Sanders, was born July 29, 1887 on a farm near
Kent, la. and died at his home in Blockton Monday, Jan. 8 [1940] at the age of 52
years, 5 months and 9 days.
He spent his
early childhood on a farm near Kent and when fourteen years of age moved to
Lenox where he attended school.
On June 5, 1914 he was married to Winifred
Hannon of Clearfield. Five children were born, McClellan, Dale, and Billy, and
two who died in infancy.
He is
survived by his father, Mac Sanders, of Lenox, his wife and three sons of Blockton, and two sisters, Mamie of Lenox and Bernice of
Florida. His mother and one sister, Grace, preceded him in death several years
ago.
Mr. Sanders
has been a machinery salesman at Shannon City and Blockton for ten years.

Schaffer,
William -
William Schaffer, 80, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ella Moore
near Cromwell last Wednesday night as the result of a heart attack. Mr.
Schaffer is a fomrer resident of Lenox but has made
his home with his daughter since the death of his wife on April 7, 1939.
Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist church in Lenox at 2
o'clock Sunday afternoon by the Rev. F. j. Robins and interment was made in the
Fairview cemetery.
William Schaffer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Schaffer, was born at
Wellsville, Louisa county, Ohio, July 2, 1859. He came
to Iowa with his parents at the age of 9 years. On June 5, 1883, he was united in
marriage to Elizabeth Miller.
Seven children were born, one of whom, Carl Edward, preceded him in
death. He is survived by four daughters,
Mrs. Emma Orth of Lenox, Mrs. Kate Miller of South Bend,
Ind., Mrs. Ella Moore of Cromwell and Mrs.
Margaret Williams of Corning and two sons, William of Lenox and Jesse of Huntington,
Ind.; thirty-one grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. Three brothers
and four sisters preceded him in death.

Schafroth, Emma -
Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Lenox Tuesday
afternoon at 2:30, conducted by the Rev. F. G. Robins, for Miss Emma Schafroth who passed away at the State hospital at Clarinda
Sunday morning. Miss Schafroth had been in failing
health for several years and entered the hospital about a month ago. Shortly after
going there, she had a fall which resulted in a broken hip from which she never
recovered. Interment was made in the Lenox cemetery.
Emma, the fourth daughter of Levi and Mary Schafroth,
was born near Sardis in Monroe county, Ohio, on June
15, 1875, and passed away at the age of 65 years and 21 days.
At the age of one and one half years, she came with her parents to Iowa
where they settled on a farm in Adams county near Corning.
Here she grew to womanhood, but never left her paternal homestead, remaining to
care for her parents as long as they lived.
Early in life she united with the Mercer Center Methodist church. For a
number of years she taught a Sunday School class and
always took a delight in such activities.
Her parents and one sister, Mrs. Louise Miller and one brother John Schafroth, preceded her in death. She is survived by four
brothers, George and Will of Corning, Joe of Lenox and Fred of San Juan, Tex.;
seven sisters, Mrs. Lena Walter, Brooks; Mrs. Rose Miller, Corning; Mrs.
Katherine Miller, Lenox; Mrs. Mary Miller and Lizzie Hanson, Prescott; Mrs.
Lillian Thornton, Brownsville, Ore. and Mrs. Alta Siegenthaler,
Akron, Ohio and 62 nieces and nephews.

Shaw,
William Bryant - Funeral services were conducted at the Arnold
Funeral Home Thursday morning at 10:30 for W. B. Shaw who passed away Tuesday,
March 12 [1940] following a few weeks illness.
William Bryant Shaw, son of Mary Jane Bryant and John T Shaw, was born
at Wapella, Ill. on Dec. 29, 1869. In 1882 he came with his parents from Crawfordsville,
la. to Lenox where he attended the Lenox public school.
Mr. Shaw followed the trade of a painter and paper hangar in Lenox for
over 40 years. He never married but made his home with his parents and
ministered to their needs in a kind and devoted manner during their declining
years. He was a member of the Methodist Church of Lenox.
Surviving are one sister, Mrs. Eva Barrans,
one nephew, Fred Barrans and one niece, Mrs. Harold Notz, all of Lenox and other relatives and friends. His
parents and one brother, T. B Shaw preceded him in death.

Stanger,
Daniel -
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, Mar. 31 [1940], at the Presbyterian church for Daniel Stanger, who died Thursday, March 28
[1940]. The services were conducted by the Rev. Christopher Shaw, assisted by
the Rev. Earl Moneymaker. Burial was made in Blue Grove cemetery.
Daniel Stanger was born July 20, 1864, in Dettingen,
Germany, and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Oscar Ward, in Lenox, on
Mar. 28, 1940, at the age of 75 years, 8 months and 8 days.
He was the son of Daniel and Marie Agnes Stanger and was the last of the
family. Mr. Stanger came to America in 1889 and settled on a farm near Dubuque
where he lived three years before moving to the farm which he bought some four
miles southwest of Lenox.
He was married Sept. 19, 1895, to Katharine Haering at Derinda Center, Ill. To them were born seven
children, six of whom survive: Paul Stanger, Frank Stanger, Mrs. Matilda Ward
and Mrs. Alma Fleming, all of Lenox, and Mrs. Amelia Clapper and Mrs. Florence Brumbaugh, both of Shelton, Wash. There are also eight grandchildren. One son, Carl, died a number of years ago. Mrs.
Stanger died February 6, 1918.
At the age of 14 years Mr. Stanger became a member of the German Lutheran church, in Dettingen, Germany but in later years he placed his
membership in the Presbyterian church of Lenox, where he remained faithful member
until his death. While not an active worker in the church program, he was
sincere in his approval and support of the church and never refused or failed
his Christian assistance.

Toland, Josephine Sanders -
Mrs. Josephine Toland passed away at 1:15 a.
m. Friday, April 26 [1940] at her home in Lenox at the age of 81 years, 3
months and 21 days. Mrs. Toland had not been in good
health for sometime, but was confined to her bed only the last week.
Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Sunday, April 28 [1940] at 2
o'clock in charge of the Rev. F. J. Robins. Burial was made in the Morgan
cemetery near Kent.
Josephine Sanders was born January 7, 1859 near Indianapolis, Indiana.
Her father having died when, she was a child, she came
with her mother to Illinois and lived near Industry for a number of years. At
the age of 17 she was married to Knos Biley Toland at Bosworth, Mo.
Ten children were born, namely: Bertha and Earl, who died in infancy; Walter
J. of Des Moines; Huldah Pearson of Lenox; Willie R.,
Industry, Ill.; Branch W., Lenox; Jesse E., Kansas City, Mo.; Leslie V. and
Ruth Moore, Lenox; and Vern B., who died September 24, 1936. Mrs. Toland was preceded in death also by her husband who died
October 20, 1934.
Mrs. Toland was a member of the Calvary church
in the community in which she lived for many years, Mr. and Mrs. Toland came to Iowa 37 years ago. They lived on a farm near
Lenox for many years before moving to Lenox. Surviving besides her seven
children are 13 grandchildren, eight
great grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Laura Morrow of Grandis,
New Mexico.

Turner,
Mary Elizabeth Oliver -
Mrs. Archie Turner passed away at her home in Lenox Thursday, March 21
[1940], following a weeks illness. Mrs. Turner had reached the age of 84 years,
5 months and 7 days.
Funeral services were held at the Barber Funeral Home in Lenox Saturday
afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. W. A. Thompson, pastor of the United Presbyterian
church at Garner, la., conducted the service.
Born October 14, 1855, near Kewanne, Ill.,
Mary Elizabeth Oliver was the oldest daughter of William and Elizabeth Turnbull
Oliver.
She was married to Archie Turner of Barlow, Ohio on February 21, 1884,
at which time they came to Lenox and settled on a farm two miles north of Lenox
where they lived until the fall of 1920 when they moved to town. During these happy years six children were born,
three of whom died in childhood, Margaret, Charlotte and Archie. Mrs. Turner is
survived by one son, Oliver of Lenox and two daughters, Miss Arma Turner of Lenox and Mrs. Helen Frehse of Salina, Kansas; one grandson, Robert Freshe of
Salina, Kans.; one brother, Dr. John H. Oliver of Kewanee, Ill. and a sister,
Mrs. E. S. Good of Kewanee who spent the last seven months with her.
Mrs. Turner was an active member of the United Presbyterian Church,
first as a young woman, at Elmira, Ill., and thereafter an active a faithful
member of the United Presbyterian Church of Lenox.
Her husband, Rev. Turner passed away July 17, 1935 while visiting
his daughter, Helen, in Salina, Kansas.

Wheatley, William Henry -
W. H.
Wheatley of Corning, father of Mrs. Alvin Gray of Lenox, passed away at his
home in southwest Corning Tuesday morning, Feb. 6 [1940] at 8:20 o'clock. Mr. Wheatley had been in failing health for
several years and took a sudden turn for the worse on Sunday, Feb. 4.,1940.
Funeral
services were conducted by the Rev. Barnes at the Methodist church in Corning
Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Burial was made in the Prairie Rose Cemetery.
William
Henry Wheatley, son of Edward and Martha Wheatley, was born in Keithburg, Ill. on June 17,1686 and
passed away Feb. 6, 1940 at the age of 73 years, 8 months and 11 days. He was
united in marriage to Miss Flora Sutton on Nov. 10, 1895 to which union 11
children were born.
He moved to
Adams county in 1890 where he resided on a farm near
Brooks, la., moving to Corning in 1916 where he resided until his death.
He was a
member of the Advent church in Brooks, la. Later transferring
his membership to the Methodist church in Corning.
Surviving
are his loving, wife and
eleven children, Emily, Edward, Hester, William, Jr. and Charles at home; Mrs.
Alvin Gray of Lenox; Mrs. Harley Christenson of Council Bluffs; Mrs. Clayton Sargent of Austin, Minn.; Mrs. Richard Talty of Corning; Mrs. Chester White of Kellerton and Mrs.
Albert Boswell of Corning; two sisters, Mrs. Emily Arnold of Salem, Nebr, and Mrs. Nettie Keithly of
Omaha, Nebr.; one brother, Joseph Wheatley of Falls City, Nebr.; six
grandchildren, Mrs. Robert Callahan and Miss Dorothy Gray of Lenox; Robert
Edward Sargent of Austin, Minn.; Joan and Mary Jean Talty and Patricia Boswell of Corning; also a number of
nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Mr. Wheatley
was a kind and loving neighbor and was always ready to help in any way when
needed. He will be greatly missed in the community.

Wurster, Chris -
Chris Wurster, 81, died at his home in Creston at 3 a.m. Monday,
having been ill for over a year. Mr. Wurster was born at Wuertenbury,
Germany on Aug. 7, 1858 and came to Iowa at the age of 17. He farmed farmed near
Lenox until 1914 at which time he moved to Creston.
Surviving
are his children, Mrs. William Froemel of Omaha, Mrs.
Clyde Milliken, John Wurster, Sam Wurster,
and Willie Wurster, all of Lenox and Clara Wurster of Creston, Iowa; ten grandchildren and eight great
grandchildren.
His wife and five brothers preceded him in
death. Funeral services were held at the Lutheran Church in Creston
Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock and burial was at the Lenox Cemetery.
