Cooper, Fred –
The sudden
passing of Fred Cooper, head of the Eldora Training School, leaves a gap in a
situation that was improving far more rapidly than any one had a right to
expect. Cooper, former Fort Dodge
athletic director, moved in on the Eldora ‘hot seat” shortly after the famous
“Eldora case” when one of the inmates lost his life. Cooper quickly acquired the confidence of the
public. What is less known is, that he
had also acquired the confidence of the boys in the school. And that wasn’t easy! Undoubtedly a casualty of the heavy physical
and mental load he carried, Fred Cooper has given his life in the public service. Few key
figures would be more greatly missed.
