Bassinger, John –

John Bassinger, passed away at his home southeast of Clearfield Tuesday morning, Dec. 22 [1942].  He had been in failing health for several months.  He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Perry Bassinger.

Bauer, Peter –

Mrs. Phillip Mincks received the sad news Monday of the death of her brother-in-law, Peter Bauer of Bridgewater, Fla.

The Rev. E. B. Stewart drove Mr. and Mrs. Mincks to Bridgewater Wednesday and conducted the funeral services.  Mrs. Mincks remained to be with her sister for a few days.

Brown, Allen P. –

Allen P. Brown was born September 20, 1854 in McClain county, Illinois and died at his home in Prescott, Ia. January 23, 1943 at the age of 88 years, four months and three days.  He came to Iowa about fifty years ago and engaged in farming. 

In 1876 he was united in marriage to Sarah Jane Campbell who preceded him in death 21 years ago.  Mr. and Mrs. Brown were the parents of seven children, two of whom preceded their father in death.

They were Robert, who died in 1939, and Orven whose death occurred nine years ago.  Surviving children are Gertrude and Alfred Brown of Prescott, Mrs. Grace McIlravy of Kent, Joe, of Lenox and Mrs. Myrtle Molyneux of Blooming Prairie, Minn.  He is also survived by thirteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren,  two brothers,  D. R. Brown of Bloomington, Ill. and L. L. Brown of Las Vegas, N.M.; two sisters, Mrs. Ellen Mohr and Lizzie Brown of Prescott, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Two grandsons are in the service.  They are Darrell Molyneux and

La Verne Brown. 

When a boy Mr. Brown united with the Christian church and has been a devoted and faithful follower of the Master.  He was active in church life and for many years was a member of the church board.  One of his greatest regrets was that he could not attend services for the past several years on account of his impaired health.

About 25 years ago Mr. Brown and his family retired from active life on the farm and moved to town. 

Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. E. F. Hagee, were held Tuesday from the Prescott Christian church.  Burial was in Prescott cemetery.

Bull, Walter E. –

Funeral services will be held today, April 8 [1943], from the Barber Funeral Home for Walter E. Bull, 56, who died Saturday at his home in Lenox.

He is survived by his widow and two daughters, Mrs. Harold Smith of Lenox and Vivian Bull who resides in California.

Rites will be in charge of the Rev. J. H. Machlan with burial in the Blythesdale, Mo. cemetery.

Carpenter, Sarah Mercer –

Short funeral services were to be conducted at the Barber Mortuary at 2:00 p.m. Thursday for Mrs. Sarah Carpenter, who died Sunday at her home in Rocky Ford. Colo.

The aunt of Mrs. M. J. Sluss and of J. G. Leckliter, Mrs. Carpenter was 72 years of age. 

Rite were to held at Rocky Ford, then the body was to be brought here.  Interment will be made in the Corning cemetery.

Carpenter, Sarah Mercer –

Mrs. Sarah Mercer Carpenter, second daughter of John and Mary Ann Mercer, and aunt of Mrs. Helen Sluss and J. G. Leckliter of Lenox, died at Rocky Ford, Colorado, Sunday 31 [1943].

She was born in Lucas county, Iowa, April 19, 1870, where she lived until the age of 15 when she moved with her father and mother to Corning, Ia.  She taught school in the vicinity of Prescott and Stringtown for several years, moving at the age of 25 to Cripple Creek, Colo. where she again taught school.

While teaching at Cripple Creek, she was married to Horace R. Carpenter, engineer for the Missouri Pacific Railroad.  They lived in Denver for two years, moving to St. Louis where they resided until 1923 when Mr. Carpenter died.  During these years in St. Louis, she became a well known genealogist, traveling extensively throughout the United States.  She leaves a library of research which is valued at $4,000.  She was an esteemed member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and was instrumental in tracing lineages of members of the Rocky Ford chapter, as well as other chapters in the United States.  She was also a member of the Daughters of the War of 1812.

In 1929 she moved back to Colorado, building a home in the vicinity of Rocky Ford, where she resided until her death.

She is survived by one brother, David N. Mercer of Steamboat Springs, Colo., and four sisters, Mrs. E. P. Brightwell of Omaha, Neb., Mrs. C. A. Baker of Grand Junction, Colo., Mrs. J. L. McCarthy of Culver City, Calif. and Mrs. Fred C. Strandrews of Alhambra, Calif.; three nephews, five nieces and a host of friends.

During her younger years, she was a member of the Methodist church, uniting with the Episcopalian church after her marriage to Mr. Carpenter.

Short services were conducted at the Barber Mortuary in Lenox, Ia. at 2 o’clock Thursday afternoon.  Rites were also held at Rocky Ford on Tuesday.  Interment was in the Corning, Ia. Walnut Grove cemetery.

Clayton, May –

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon from the Lenox Methodist church for Mrs. May Clayton, 59, who died Sunday night at eleven o’clock at her home in Lenox.  She had been ill but a short time.

Surviving are her five children: Lois of Lenox; Carroll, who is serving in the U.S. Navy in Florida; Wilbur of South Gate, Calif.; Mrs. Delma Hoford of Compton, Calif. and Mrs. Dorothy Immel of Des Moines.

Rites will be in charge of the Rev. J. H. Machlan.  Burial will be in Fairview cemetery.

Fickess, John Wayne –

Funeral services were held at Gravity Tuesday, Dec. 21 [1942] for John Wayne Fickess, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Fickess who died Saturday at Glenwood.

Fink, Mrs. Frank –

Less than a week after she had moved from Osceola, Ia. to a farm home one mile southeast of Blockton, the body of 40-year-old Mr. Frank Fink was found Tuesday in her bed.  Both wrists had been slashed and her throat had been cut.

Officers at Mount Ayr, who investigated said Mrs. Fink had used a safety razor blade to commit what appeared to be suicide.  Dr. E. J. Watson, Diagonal, Ringgold county coroner, immediately ordered an inquest.  Verdict of the coroner’s jury was death by her own hand.

Surviving are her husband, and daughter, Donna.

Gray, Mattie Cordra Harvey –

Funeral services for Mrs. Earl Gray were conducted Sunday by Rev. E.  B. Stewart at the Blockton Methodist church  Interment was in Rosehill cemetery.  Mrs. Gray passed away at a St. Joseph Hospital Thursday afternoon.  She suffered second and third degree burns, when her clothes caught fire, at her home two months ago and from which she did not recover.

Mattie Cordra Gray, daughter of Robert and Rhoda Harvey was born near Blockton, Iowa August 22, 1872 and passed away at the Missouri Methodist Hospital in St. Joseph, March 18, 1943, at the age of 70 years, 6 months and 24 days.

She grew to womanhood in the vicinity of Blockton and early in life became a member of the Methodist church in Blockton.

On Sept. 3, 1896 she was united in marriage to Earl Elwood Gray and to this union was born one son, Louie, now residing near Mt. Ayr, Iowa.  She was a kind a loving wife and mother and a good neighbor; always thinking of the welfare of her loved ones and friends.

Mrs. Gray found great joy and comfort in her little grandson, Melvin, who will miss his happy visits with Grandma Gray.

Besides her husband, son, daughter-in-law and grandson, she is survived by two brothers, W. A. Harvey of Conway, Iowa and Milton Harvey of Blockton, Iowa.  Also a number of nieces and nephews.

A little granddaughter, Martha Sue, preceded her in death on April 23, 1938. 

Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon, Mar. 21, at Blockton Methodist church by the Rev. E. B. Stewart, pastor.  Burial was made in Blockton.

Ginn, Jim –

Jim Ginn, 60, a long time resident of the Lenox vicinity, died early Tuesday in a Creston hospital where he was receiving treatment.

Surviving are his two children, a daughter, Mrs. Mildred Shafer of Kent and Ralph Ginn of Wayne. Nebr.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete pending arrival of Ralph Ginn, however will be from the Barber Funeral Home with interment in the Lenox cemetery.

Johnson, Francis Ingraham  –

Funeral services were Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 from the Barber Funeral Home for Francis I. Johnson, 49.

Mr. Johnson died at his home in Lenox on Monday, Jan. 4 [1943].

He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Will Johnson.

Rites were conducted by the Rev. J. H. Machlan of the Lenox Methodist Church.  Burial was in the Lenox cemetery.

Johnson, Francis Ingraham

Francis Ingraham Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Johnson was born at Glencoe, Minn. On October 9, 1892 and died at his home in Lenox, Iowa at the age of 50 years, two months and 25 days.

He was preceded in death by his father, a sister and a brother.  In his late years he was baptized into the Methodist church.  During his long illness he was always a very patient and devoted son to his mother.

Surviving are his mother, together with other relatives and a multitude of friends.

Funeral services were Wednesday, January 6 [1943] at 2:30 p.m. from the Barber Funeral Home with the Rev. J. H. Machlan in charge of the rites.  Burial was in Lenox cemetery.

Kappel, Mary –

Funeral services were Monday afternoon at 2:30 from the Lenox Church of Christ for Mrs. Mary Kappel, 74, who died Sunday in the Greater Community Hospital in Creston, where she had been a patient but a short time.

Surviving are her three children:  Mrs. Nina McCall of Creston, First Sergt. Ray M. Kappel, now stationed in the West Indies and Everett R. Kappel of Davenport.

Rites were conducted by the Rev. E.F. Hagee.  Burial was in the Lenox cemetery.

Keenan, Minnie B. Norton –

Last Wednesday morning this community was shocked by the learning of the sudden death of Mrs. Minnie B. Keenan.  Mrs. Keenan was one of the pioneers of the community and will be missed very much by her many friends.

Minnie B., daughter of M.K. and Rebekah Norton, was born in Brown county, Illinois, July 28, 1885.  She was the youngest of a family of 6 children.  Two brothers and three sisters, all who have preceded her in death except one sister, Mary Jane Cowell of Dewey, Okla.

She moved with her parents to Ringgold county in 1869 and ever since has resided in the vicinity of Blockton.  She was married to John P. Keenan, Feb. 18, 1884.  To this union was born one son Hugh M. who died at the age of 11 months.  Her husband preceded her in death October 14, 1916.

In her early years she became a member of the Baptist church, and later united with the Christian church and continued a faithful and devoted member.

Her passing occurred on Mar. 31, 1943 at the age of 77 years, 9 months and 3 days.

Funeral services were held at the home on Friday, April 2, 1943, conducted by E. E. String, fellow of Des Moines.  Interment was at Blockton cemetery.

Kinser, Cecil J. –

Cecil J. Kinser, son of Mr. and Mrs. Merida Kinser and a former Lenox resident, died December 9 [1942] in a Los Angeles hospital friends here learned this week.

He had been ill two years with the result of a brain tumor.

Thirty-six years of age, he is survived by his widow, a son Roy, and by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. Kinser, now of Des Moines.

Laird,  Mary Lenora Davis–

Funeral services were Saturday, December 12 [1942], from the Church of Christ in Lenox for Mrs. Lenora Laird, 67, who died at her home here Thursday, December 10.

Surviving is a daughter, Mrs. Florence Gray of Brooks, Ia., three grandchildren, Loren, Billy and Jimmy Gray, six sisters, Mrs. Blanche Key of Lenox, Mrs. Clara Gouchneour of Fredonia, Kans., Mrs. Inez Gold of Mt. Ayr, Mrs. Beulah Boggs of Oxford, Kans., and Mrs. Elsie Keesling, and Mrs. Bonnie Hankins of Fredonia; three brothers, Elmo Davis of Fredonia, Will Davis of Coffeyville, Kans. and Art Davis of Foreman, North Dakota.

Rites were conducted by the Rev. E. F. Hagee.  Burial was in Lenox cemetery.

Laird, Mary Lenora Davis–

Mary Lenora Laird, daughter of George and Emma Davis, was born six miles west of Lenox on January 3, 1878 and died December 10, 1942 at the age of 66 years, 11 months and eight days.

She was married to Homer L. Laird on January 21, 1899 and to this union was born a daughter, Florence.

Mrs. Laird spent several years as a public school teacher in Taylor and Ringgold counties.  At an early age she confessed her faith in Christ and became a member of the Blue Grove Christian church where she served as a teacher in several department of the church school. 

Later she transferred her membership to the Lenox Church of Christ.

She moved with her husband to Kellerton, Iowa in 1899 where they lived until they moved to Lenox, Ia., to make their home with her aged father who died March 28, 1936.

She then cared for her invalid husband who passed away April 29, 1937.

She leaves her daughter, Mrs. Florence Gary of Brooks, Ia.; three grandchildren, Loren, Billy and Jimmy; six sisters, Mrs. Blanche Key of Lenox, Mrs. Clara Gouchneour of Fredonia, Kans., Mrs. Inez Gold of Mt. Ayr, Mrs. Beulah Briggs of Oxford, Kans, Mrs. Elsie Keesling and Mrs. Bonnie Hankins, also of Fredonia, three brothers, Elmo Davis of Fredonia, Will Davis of Coffeyville, Kans. and Art Davis of Foreman, N.D.

Little, George Lester –

George Lester Little, was born August 12, 1887 at Nauvoo, Ill. and died at his home in Clearfield Friday afternoon, January 15 [1943], after a long illness. 

He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Little who preceded him in death.

His parents moved to St. Charles, Ia. when Lester was five years old.  Then they moved to Tingley, Ia. where Lester spent his boyhood days.  He attended school at Tingley and was married February 12, 1908 to Exle Reynolds of Diagonal.  To this union two children were born: Staff Sergt. Carroll D. Little, now stationed in North Africa with the U.S. air corps, and Doris Pitt of Clearfield.

He united with the Methodist church at Mount Ayr and has been faithful to its teachings.  He was a kind and loving husband, father and brother and especially fond of his little grandchildren who helped to brighten many long days of suffering.

Funeral services were Monday at two o’clock from the Clearfield Methodist church with the Rev. Mr. Rowe in charge of the rites.  Interment was in the Clearfield cemetery.

Martin, Wilbur –

Wilbur Martin, 22-year-old nephew of Mrs. F. M. Clute of Lenox, was drowned December 2 [1942] while in the naval service of the United States.

A frequent visitor in his aunt’s home, Martin was aboard a navy boat when it swamped in Narragansett Bay.  His body was not recovered until December 10,[1942].

Mickey, Walter –

Funeral services were at two o’clock Tuesday afternoon from the Platte Center church for Walter Mickey, 65, Kent farmer who died Saturday.  He had suffered a heart ailment for three years.

Surviving are two sons, Glen and Howard Mickey of Kent, and two daughters, Mrs. Roy Richardson of Creston and Mrs. Verne Schoffield of Lenox.

Miller, Mrs. J. W. –

Mrs. J. W. Miller of Redding passed away at her home Friday after a lingering illness.  She is the mother of Tom Miller and grandmother of Duane Miller of Blockton.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Redding, Sunday afternoon, January 24 [1943], conducted by the Rev. E. B. Stewart

Pettis, Mrs. A. P –

Mrs. A. P. Pettis died Wednesday at her home after a long illness.  Funeral services were Saturday at Grant City, Mo. with interment in the Blockton cemetery.

Shafer, John L. –

Funeral services were Saturday afternoon, December 26 [1942], from the Platteville church for John L. Shafer, 77, who died December 22 [1942] in Gay township.

Well known as a stockman and farmer, he is survived by two daughters, Maggie Scroggie of Maloy and Lizzie Kammerer of New Market.  He also leaves eleven grandchildren.

The rites were conducted by the Rev. E. B. Stewart of the Methodist church.  Interment was in Platteville cemetery.

Shafer, John L. –

John L. Shafer, son of William and Elizabeth Shafer was born December 31, 1865 in Gay township, Taylor County, Iowa, and departed this life December 22, 1942 at the age of 76 years, 11 months and 21 days.  He spent his entire life on the same farm.

His father died when he was but three years of age.  His mother was with him until her death in 1927.

Mr. Shafer had four sisters, and 3 brothers, all of whom preceded him in death, except one brother, Enoch, who resides in Colorado.

In young manhood he united with the Baptist church.  On December 25, 1892, he was united in marriage to Lillian F. Cobb.  To this union were born five children: Maggie Scroggie of Maloy, Ia., Bessie and Lee who died in infancy, Lizzie Kammerer of New Market, Ia. and Stella Agnes who preceded her father in death 6 years ago.

Besides his two daughters and sons-in-law, George Scroggie and Orval Kammerer, he leave to mourn his death his eleven grandchildren, Mrs. Lewis Hammer, Mrs. Harold Molher, Georgia, Jennie, John, Jesse, Charles, and Robert Scroggie; Eldon, Ruth and Edith Kammerer, a number of nieces and nephews and many friends.

Mr. Shafer, being a stockman, was widely known.  He had many friends, and was a kind and loving father and grandfather.  He will be remembered with affection to his relatives and friends and will be greatly missed by all.

Funeral services were Saturday afternoon, Dec. 26 at Platteville, Ia. by the Rev. E. B. Stewart of Blockton.  Burial was in the family lot at the Platteville cemetery.

Smith, Adeline Bristow -

Adeline Bristow, daughter of Ralph and Lavina Bristow, was born in Cedar county near Humansville, Mo. November 6, 1861, and departed this life on March 23, 1943, in Des Moines, Iowa at the age of 81 years, 4 months and 19 days.

She was united in marriage to Charles Smith on February 17, 1891, and to this union were born seven children.  Two preceded her in death.  Those who survive are Mrs. Walter Hubbard of Shannon City, Mrs. Elza Bowers of Blockton, Mrs. Paul Flichter and Mrs. Elmer Flichter of Randolph, and Mrs. May Sparling of Des Moines, by a former marriage.  Also thirteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren and the many friends she had made throughout her long life.

At the age of thirty she united with the Holiness church at Athelstan, Ia. and was a devout member of that congregation at the time of her death.

Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Thomas Rhoades at the Rhoades Funeral Home in Mt. Ayr Thursday afternoon and interment was in the Mt. Ayr cemetery.

Stahl, Ida E. –

Ida E. Stahl of Lenox, Iowa died December 15, 1942 at the age of 86 years, four months and 20 days after a lingering illness of nine months.

Mrs. Stahl was born July 25, 1856 at West Salem, Wayne county, Ohio.  She was married to Daniel Stahl of Prescott, Ia. which was their home for several years.  They have been residents of Lenox for the past 22 years.

She was a member of the Christian church of Prescott and member of the Relief Corps of Lenox.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Cora E. Murphy of Des Moines and Mrs. Bessie Casey of Osceola, and one son, Lee, of Creston, Ia.

Her husband and two sons and a daughter preceded her in death.  She also leaves three sisters, Mrs. Rebecca Davis of Monmouth, Ill.; Mrs. Emma Miner of Prescott, and Mrs. Lucy Robinson of Prescott; four grandchildren, Raymond Murphy, Des Moines, Marie Moore of Boulder City, Nevada, Myrl Chambers of Holtville, Calif., and Dorothy Alexander of Pasadena, Calif.  Besides these there are nine great grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Services were held at the Arnold Funeral Home Friday at two o’clock with the Rev. E. F. Hagee officiating.  Pallbearers were H. C. Bell, Orville Bricker, Joe Brown, Ralph Wood, Ray Campbell and Frank Wood.  Music was by Martin Bell, Eula Campbell, accompanied by Mrs. Martin Bell.

Burial was in Prescott cemetery.

Winslow, Bert S. –

Bert S. Winslow, 63, well known Sharpsburg farmer, died suddenly at his home Thursday following a heart attack.  Surviving are three brothers, George of Sharpsburg, Orin of Bedford and Alva of Clarinda, and one sister, Eva Arnold of Newell, S. D.

The rites, from the Barber Funeral Home in Lenox were conducted by the Rev. Earl Moneymaker.  Burial was in Blue Grove cemetery.

Young, Jane C. Yates–

Short rites were held Saturday in the Lenox Cemetery for 78-year-old Mrs. Jane C. Young who died at her home in Creston.  Surviving are three sons, Lynden and Robert of Lenox and Harold of Chicago, a brother, James Yates of Chicago, six grandchildren and a great grandson.  Rites were from her home in Creston after which the body was brought to Lenox for interment.

Young, Jane C. Yates –

Jane C. Yates, daughter of James and Isabelle Yates, was born in LaSalle County, Illinois on July 11, 1864 and died February 11, 1943 at her home in Creston, Iowa at the age of 78 years and seven months.

On April 13, 1885, she was united in marriage to Henry H. Young and in 1887 they moved to Taylor county, Iowa.  To this union four children were born: Lynden, Robert, Isabelle and Harold.
