Barry, Michael -

Michael (Mike) Barry, 79, died Wednesday evening at his home

in Lenox following an extended illness. He had been a funeral

director at Massena from 1919 until 1934. He and his family

moved to Corning in 1937 where he was associated with the Roland

Funeral home. After retirement in 1952 he and his wife moved to Lenox.

Rosary was said at the Roland Funeral home at Corning Friday evening. Funeral services were Saturday at 9:30 am from

St Patrick's church in Corning with Rev Father Adam Reisz

officiating, with Rev Bonaventure assisting. Burial was in

Calvary cemetery at Corning.

Survivors: his wife, Julia, 2 daughters, Mrs Bernadine Rusco

of Lenox, Mrs Helen Mack of Des Moines; l son, John of Lenox and 4 grandchildren.

Bridges, Ray -

Ray Bridges, 69, died late Tuesday night at his home in Conway. Surviving are his wife Anna, three sons, Clifford of Rose Hill, Clinton of Conway, and Theodore of Thatcher, Ariz; also five grandchildren.

The body was taken Thursday to Oskaloosa for service and burial. The family formerly lived there.

Carey, Nina -

Ivan Carey went to Denver, Colo on Thursday called by the death

of his sister, Miss Nina Carey 72, who suffered a stroke.  She died Wednesday morning.  Funeral services and burial were at Denver on Saturday.

Miss Carey was a graduate of the Lenox high school. She moved

to Denver a number of years ago and had been an art teacher

in the schools there for many years, Survivors include: 1 sister Mrs

Mary Mohler of Golden, Colo, 2 brothers Elwood of California and Ivan.

Dill, Dolly L. Wiard

Funeral services were held Tuesday at the United Presbyterian Church for Mrs W H (Dolly) Dill, who died at her home here Saturday.  Rev James Eddy, minister of the Church, officiated at the  service.  Burial was in Fairview Cemetery.

Obituary

Dolly L Wiard, daughter of Valentine and Martha Wiard was born near Lenox, Iowa Oct. 25, 1880, and passed away at her home in Lenox on Nov 21, 1959 at the age of 79 years, 26 days.

She was united in marriage to William Hoyt Dill of Franklin Co., Ohio on Sept 14, 1904.  At this time they moved to Ohio where they lived for fourteen months.  They returned to Iowa and made their home on a farm four miles southwest of Lenox.

To this union one son, Raymond Wesley was born.  In 1940 they moved to Lenox, Iowa where she continued to reside until her death.

She united with the United Presbyterian Church in February 1899.  She joined the Rebecca Lodge in 1922.  Dolly enjoyed her Lodge and Church work until her health failed in the Spring of 1956.

She was preceded in death by her parents, 3 sisters and 1 brother.  She is survived by her husband, Hoyt, a son, Raymond and his wife, Beulah, a sister-in-law Mrs Lula Wiard, Royal Oak, Michigan, seven nieces, four nephews and a host of friends.

Edwards. Harry J. -

Harry J Edwards, 53, of Des Moines, died of a coronary thrombosis Monday, Nov 30, at Des Moines General hospital. Services were Thursday Dec 3 at the Hamilton Funeral home. Burial was in Highland Memory Gardens cemetery.

Mr Edwards was an auditor at the Phillips Petroleum Co and had worked at Phillips 25 years. Born at Lenox, he lived at Knoxville before going to Des Moines 29 years ago. He was a member of Highland Park Christian Church, Pioneer Masonic Lodge, Temple Commandery, Za-Ga-Zigi Shrine and the Tux Brigade of the Shrine.

During World War II he served in the navy.

Surviving are his widow, Vivian, and two sisters, Mrs Rolland Buxton and Mrs. Harry Miller, both of Lenox.

Froescher, Ernest C. -

Ernest C Froescher, 74, died unexpectedly of a heart attack Thursday at 12:30 a m at his home in Ruston, La. He was a retired fanner.

Funeral services were held at 3:30 p m Friday, in the Pine Grove Baptist Church with the Rev A H Pruitt and the Rev James Gray officiating. Burial was in the Pine Grove Cemetery.

Ernest Froescher was married to Allie Gray in September, 1934. They observed their 25th wedding anniversary in September, 1959.

Survivors include his widow, Allie, two sisters, Mrs Lee Rupe of Oroville, California, and Mrs Lizzie Ambrose of Lenox, and his step-mother, Mrs Maria Froescher also of Lenox. Also a host of nieces, nephews and friends. One brother, Fred Froescher preceded him in

death.

He lived in Lenox for a year and has visited in Lenox many times. Mrs Ambrose and sons, Karl and Jasper attended the funeral.

Johnston, Mrs. George –

Word was received by Wilton Johnston Thursday that his mother, Mrs. George Johnston had passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs R. J. Sklenicki in Santa Monica, Calif.  Mrs Johnston went to California one a half years ago to live with her daughter.  She had been ill about ten days.  The funeral will be held at Platte Center Presbyterian church Wednesday.  The body will be at the Wilton Johnston home Wednesday morning.  Mr and Mrs Wilton Johnston just returned home last week from spending several days visiting his mother in California.

Kanoff, George W. –

George W. Kanoff was born August 11, 1894.  He passed away Sept. 28, 1959 in a Sacramento hospital.  He was the son of J N & Gracia Kanoff, grandson of the late Mrs J West Jones of Lenox.

He leaves his wife Alma, a daughter Mrs Faye McNell of Davis and son Bruce, a sister Mrs Eythel Cochran of South Gate, Calif., a brother, Johnnie Kanoff of Pamona and six grandchildren.  George was parts manager for Hanies Motors for 16 years and a resident of the county 17 years.  He was a member of Trinity Lodge No. 208 AF&AM of Davenport.  Funeral services were Oct 1 in Sacramento.

Leach, Nellie Florence Fitzgerald –

Nellie Florence Leach, daughter of Porter and Mary Fitzgerald was born near Eldorado Springs, Mo. March 5, 1884 and passed away at Creston Oct. 17 at the age of 75 years, 7 months and 12 days.

On December 11, 1904 she was united in marriage with Wesley Leach of Eldorado Springs, Mo where they resided until moving to Union County, Iowa in 1907.  With the exception of 2 years spent in Minnesota, the rest of their life was spent in Adams and Union counties.  They farmed near Lenox until December 1941 when they moved to Corning, and operated the Gamble Store with their son Glenn.  In March of 1949 they retired and moved to Creston where Mr Leach passed away on March 25, 1953.

To this union six children were born: Alvin E of Prescott, Glenn F and Earl W of Creston, Thelma Chandler of Sharpsburg, Ruby Shawler of Lenox, a son Harold died on September 3, 1953.

Nellie was the 3rd child in a family of 7, two of whom survive: Mrs Julia Pelley of Altius, Oklahoma and Benjamin Fitzgerald of Creston.  Other survivors include 13 grandchildren 16 great grandchildren and 4 daughters-in-law, 2 sons-in-law and many other relatives and friends.

Mrs Leach accepted Christ as her savior September 13, 1899 at Eldorado Springs and later transferred her membership to the Kent Christian Church.  Mr and Mrs Leach and their family transferred their membership to the Lenox Methodist Church where she remained a member until death.

She entered the hospital at Creston Oct 15 and died Oct 17.  She had been in failing health the last three years and confined to her home most of that time.  She had not been seriously ill until the last few days.

The funeral was Oct. 19 at the Lenox Christian Church, the Rev Duckett officiating.  Burial was also at Lenox.

Putnam, Mary –

Mr. [Hoyt] Dill received word Thursday that his sister, Mrs Mary Putnam, 85, of Columbus, Ohio died at noon that day.  She had visited here a number of times.

Rankin, Claude -

Claude Rankin, 51, farmer living east of Bedford suffered a heart attack Monday, Nov 2, and died on the way to a Maryville, Mo, hospital. He was the father of Frank Rankin of Lenox.  Other survivors include his wife, Marjorie, 5 other children, a son Jerry of Des Moines, a daughter, Miss Jo Rankin of Clarinda, 3 children at home, Gary, Danny and Donna, his mother of Bedford, and a brother of Omaha.

Funeral services were Thursday at 2 p m at Bedford. Burial

in Fairview cemetery at Bedford.

Roudybush, Clifford William -

Clifford Roudybush, 77, farmer living southeast of town, died Sunday morning of cancer at the hospital in Creston.  Funeral services were Tuesday at the Methodist Church, Rev. Burton C Collier, the pastor, officiating.  Burial was in the Lenox Cemetery.

His family suggest memorial gifts to be contributed to the Lenox Methodist Church.

Mr Roudybush was born on a farm south of Diagonal.  He had lived in Lenox for the past 15 years.  Prior to that he had lived in Clearfield for ten year.

His survivors include his wife, Martha, twin daughters, Mrs Robert Brown and Mrs Donald Barker and nine grandchildren, all of Lenox.

Other survivors are four brothers, Floyd of Des Moines, John of Diagonal, Lester of Mason City and Ralph of Clarinda as well as three sisters, Mrs Myrtle Yashack of Diagonal, Mrs Mae Gleason of Seattle, Wash, and Mrs Fern Dolecheck of Diagonal. His parents, Mr and Mrs Will Roudybush, a sister, Mrs Beulah Sabotka; and four infant

brothers and sisters preceded in death.

Roudybush, Clifford William -

Clifford William, the son of William A and Maria Griffeth Roudybush was born March 28, 1902 on a farm south of Diagonal. He departed from this life at the hospital in Creston Nov 15, 1959 at the age of 57 years, 7 months and 17 days.

Clifford spent the early years of his life until 1930 in the Diagonal

vicinity. In 1929 he was united in marriage with Martha Struwe and moved east of Lenox. To this union were born twin daughters Kathlyn and Maralyn.  During the years 1934-44 he lived in the Clearfield vicinity, moving then to their present home near Lenox where they have lived the last 15 years.

One of a family of 13, he was preceded in death by his parents,

a sister, Mrs Beulah Sabotka and four infant brothers and sisters. His is the first death in the immediate Roudybush family of over 120 members since his father's passing in 1937.

He leaves to mourn his passing: his wife Martha; twin daughters, Kathlyn (Mrs Robert Brown of Diagonal), and Maralyn (Mrs Donald Barker) two sons-in-law to whom he was extremely devoted, Bob

Brown and Don Barker; also nine grandchildren, Patty, Gary, Deanna, Billy, Jimmy and Sheryl Brown, Barbara, Sandra and Steven Barker; Also brothers: Floyd of Des Moines, John of Diagonal, Lester

of Mason City and Ralph of Clarinda and sisters: Mae Gleason of Seattle, Wash, Myrtle Yashack of Benton, Fern Dolecheck of Diagonal; In addition there are many nieces and nephews, Martha's

mother Mrs Struwe who helped to care for him these last three weeks, other relatives and scores of friends.

He joined the Methodist Church in Diagonal in his early life, later transferring to the Lenox Methodist Church.  His pride and joy was in helping others and enjoying his nine grandchildren.

Tribute: During the past two years Clifford has never complained

once but has been in failing health after withstanding the shocks of surgery, accident, and sickness he underwent surgery for the removal of a cancerous lung. Even though he was in good spirits he could not endure the ordeal and continued to lose strength and vitality.  He was a kind and devoted husband, father, and neighbor who was always ready to lend a hand [Poem]

The funeral was at the Methodist Church the Rev B C Collier officiating. Burial was in Fairview cemetery.  Casket bearers were WiUiam Weeda, John Brown, Jodie Hepperly, Jim McMath, Henry Beck and Earl Smith.

Sandstrum, Rosanne Lynn –

Rosanne Lynn, infant daughter of Pvt and Mrs Albert Sandstrum

of Aberdeen, Maryland passed away Nov 11, 1959 at 8:17 am a few minutes after birth.  She is survived by her parents and nine grandparents, Mr and Mrs Byron Northrup of Lenox, Mr and Mrs Gunnar Sandstrum of Sharpsburg, great grandparents Mr and Mrs Chas Veatch of Lenox, Mr Harold Long of Sharpsburg, Mrs Roy Northrup of Utah and a great great grandmother, Mrs Arda Crawford of Maryville, Mo. besides several uncles and aunts.

Schmitt, Dora -

Mrs Dora Schmitt, 76, died at her home in Lenox Saturday afternoon. Her death followed an extended illness. Funeral services were at 2

pm Tuesday at the Bender funeral home, Rev Fr Adam Reisz officiating.  Burial was in Fairview cemetery.

Mrs Schmitt was born in Lenox and had lived here most of her life. She was the last survivor of her family.  Survivinig are her husband,

Tony; two daughters, Mrs Bernice Quinn of Lenox and Mrs

Margaret Shaw of Des Moines; four sons, Lawrence of Kenneswick,

Wash, Floyd and Don of Des Moines and Hugh of Omaha, Nebr; 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. 

Mr and Mrs Schmitt had observed their 58th wedding anniversary last February.

Stremmel, Nathan –

Nathan Stremmel, 93, retired farmer, suffered a stroke and was taken to a nursing home in Bedford where he died Wednesday morning.

He was born in Pittsburgh, Pa. moving one year later with his parents to Illinois.  He had lived in Lenox many years and had been employed at the Davis Elevator eleven years before his retirement.

Survivors include 2 daughters Mrs Dora Frederick of Table Grove, Ill., Miss Julia Stremmel at home in Lenox, 2 sons Harve Strummel of Macomb, Ill., Lloyd Strummel of Lewistown, Ill. 6 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and a number of great great grandchildren, making the 5 generations.  His wife, Agnes preceded him in death.  The body is at the Bender Funeral Home.  Services will be at Bender Funeral Home on Friday at 2 pm with Rev Burton C Collier officiating.  Burial will be in the Lenox Cemetery.

Stremmel, Nathan -

Nathan Stremmel, son of John and Mary Stremmel, the last of 8 children was born in Pittsburgh, Penn, on Dee 1, 1865 and passed away at the Armstrong Nursing home on Wednesday, Nov 11 at the age of 93 years, 11 months and 10 days. When one year old he

came to the state of Illinois with his parents where he grew to manhood and made his home until about 1914 when he came to Lenox, where he has since lived.

On Sept 6, 1886, he was married to Mary S Danner who died

July 28, 1907. To this union was born one daughter, Dora and

two sons Harvey and Lloyd, in April 1908 he was married to

Clara Hawkins who died April 1, 1910. To this union was born

one daughter, Berniece who died at the age of ten years. On

Dec 23, 1915 he was married to Agnes Shoenhair who preceded

him in death on Sept 3, 1940.

He became a member of the Presbyterian church in Lenox

In 1915.

He is survived by a daughter, Mrs Dora Frederick of Table

Grove, Ill., two sons, Harvey of Macomb, Ill. and Lloyd of Lewistown,

Ill., also a daughter, Miss Julia Stremmel of Lenox, 6 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and 7 great great grandchildren.

Tuttle, Ethel Cain –

The Time Table received a letter from Mrs Effie Duckett at 2319 18th St., Everett, Wash.  She believes there are readers here who would remember Ethel Cain Tuttle who formerly lived here.  Mrs Tuttle died Oct 17 and was buried at Clinton, Maine.  Her husband died many years ago.  She leaves no children, a brother Cecil Cain lives in Maryland and 3 sisters survive: Blanche Wiley, Ida Andrews and Gertrude Richardson.

Wainwright, Lydia Anna Wolfe -

Word was received early Monday morning of the death of Mrs Anna Wainwright 90, of the Good Samaritan Village, St. Francis, Kan.  The body was returned to the Bender Funeral Home.

Services will be Thursday at 2 pm at the United Presbyterian Church, the Rev. James Eddy officiating.

Survivors: 2 sons, Carroll of Syracuse, Kans., Leonard of Champaign, Ill. 4 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.  Her husband Sam died a number of years ago.  The family formerly lived in Lenox.

Wainwright, Lydia Anna Wolfe -

Lydia Anna Wolfe, the second of seven children born to Mary and John Wolfe was born in eastern Kansas on September 5, 1869.  When a child she moved with her family to Iowa where she grew up.  In 1888 she was united in marriage to S E Wainwright.  They homesteaded in eastern Colorado and later moved to Sharpsburg, Iowa, then to Lenox, soon after 1900.

They lived in Lenox the rest of their married life. Mr Wainwright

was very active in business and civic life until his death on January 1, 1931.  Mrs Wainwright continued to live in Lenox until five years ago when she went back to Kansas.

She was always a great worker in her church and in the community.

She was the first Noble Grand in the Lenox Rebekah Lodge and was a member of the Lenox School Board for twelve years, being one of the first woman school board members in the territory.

She passed away in St Francis, Kan. on Nov 30, 1959 and was laid to rest by Mr Wainwright in Lenox. She leaves to mourn her passing, a son Leonard, and wife Eva, and their daughter Kay and her husband

Sam Trippiell and their daughter and son, all of Champaign, Ill.  A son, Carroll and wife Catherine and their sons, Kenneth and Francis of Syracuse, Kan, and their daughter Barbara Ann and her husband Verlyn Ginther and their three children of Hill City, Kan, a sister Mrs Carrie Pinkney of Phllipsburg. Mo, and a brother Frank Wolfe of Guthrie, Okla, and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Whipple, Lulu Allen -

Mrs Lulu Whipple of Sharpsburg died at Rosary hospital In Corning Tuesday, Sept. 22. The funeral was the following Sunday at the Presbyterian Church in Sharpsburg, conducted by the Rev E. M. McGehee. Burial was at Guss cemetery.

Lula Whipple was one of a family of 11, four of whom preceded her in death.  Those remaining are Homer Allen of Harlan, Margaret Frost of Ridgeway, Mo., Minnie Schwab of Kansas City, Joe Allen of Hamilton, Mo., McKinley Allen of Kansas City, Fred Allen of Darlington, Mo.

After her marriage they lived on a farm near Guss, later moving to Mills County and from there to Colorado.  Two years later the family moved back to Iowa and lived near Avoca for two years.  From Avoca they moved to Mills County, where they lived ten years.  In 1922 they moved to Taylor County in the Sharpsburg community.

Mrs. Whipple at an early age joined the church at Mount Gilead, a country church near Eagleville, Mo.  She transferred her membership to the Presbyterian Church at of Sharpsburg, where she remained an active member.

Wilson, Robert Wilbur –

Robert W Wilson, 85, well known farmer, died at his home southeast of Lenox Monday morning.

Services were Wednesday at the Bender Funeral Home with the Rev. James Eddy officiating.  Burial was in the Lenox Cemetery.

Obituary

Robert Wilbur Wilson, son of John B and Ellen Wilson was born at Crawfordsville, Iowa on Nov 29, 1873 and passed away at his home near Lenox, Sept 28, 1959 at the age of 85 years and 10 months.

While still a small boy he moved with his parents to Taylor County.  On Dec 27, 1898 he was united in marriage to Minnie A Seibert of Conway.  To this union were born five children, Gladys Garver of Corydon, Mildred and Cecil of Lenox, Marvin of Blockton and Maurine Strange of Albert Lea, Minn.  His wife died November 29, 1946.  Besides the children who survive, he leaves eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren, two daughters-in-law Velda and Mary Wilson, two sons-in-law Lloyd Garver and Jim Strange, one sister, Mrs. Sarah Wilcox, two brothers, Edd and Harve Wilson of Lenox.

He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church of Clearfield for many years.  He later placed his membership in the Presbyterian Church of Lenox.

He was a kind and loving father and grandfather.  He was very patient and cheerful during his long illness and will be greatly missed by his family.

Sharon Wurster, 16, died Saturday morning at her home in

Mt Ayr. Survivors are her mother and father, Mr and Mrs Melvin

Wurster. Funeral services were Monday at 3 p m at the

Methodist church in Lenox, the Rev. John Lippincott officiating.  Burial was in the Lenox Cemetery.

Shardon Kathryn Wurster -

Sharon Kathryn Wurster, daughter of Melvin and Dorothy Wurster was born at the home of her grandparents, Mr and Mrs Ed Cooper at Conway, and passed away Saturday night at her home in Mt Ayr, at the age of 16 years, one month, and 12 days.

She was baptized into the Methodist Church at Lenox on Easter Sunday, 1944. Sharon's burdens were greater than most people realized.

She is survived by her parents, four uncles, four aunts, 11 cousins and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon from the Methodist Church in Lenox, conducted by the pastor. Rev Burton Collier and the Rev John Lippincott, pastor of the Methodist Church in Mt Ayr.

Burial was in the Lenox cemetery.

Ziehe, Mabel Lucille Sturm -

Funeral services for Mrs John Ziehe were held at the Methodist

Church on Monday, Oct 19, at 2 pm, the Rev Burton Collier officiating.  Norma Paymal was organist, Helen Brokaw and Virginia Jackson sang two numbers.  Pall bears were Herman Wenger, Clifford Preston, Patrick Stevin, Robert Werts, Marvin South and Cecil Wilson.  Burial in the Lenox Cemetery.

Mabel Lucille Sturm, daughter of Charles and May Hegwood Sturm was born April 19, 1912 on a farm four miles west of Lenox and died October 15, 1959 in a Hayward, Calif. hospital at the age of 47 years, 5 months and 25 days.

Mabel’s mother died when she was three hours old, leaving the infant in the care of her father and older brother and sister.  For one year friends and neighbors helped with her care.  Then her sister and brother-in-law Lennie and Will Preston took her into their home where she spent the early years of her childhood.  Lennie cared for her as her own child.  Mabel seemed like a sister to Thelma, Velda, Clifford and Dorothy.

At a young age she went into her life’s work as a nurse caring for others.  For two years she cared for the patients at Glenwood

hospital. From there she went to the Clarinda hospital where she worked for 16 years.

On Sept 8, 1948, she was united in marriage to John Ziehe of

Clarinda where they made their home until moving to California in 1953.

Mabel was never blessed with children of her own, but John's

four children were a great comfort to her. In August 1955 she took seriously ill and underwent major surgery. She made a quick recovery but of short duration. In September of 1957 she became ill again and since then spent many months in the hospital.

Mabel confessed her faith in Christ, was baptized and became a member of the Methodist Church in Lenox. She attended church in Livermore when her health permitted. She leaves to mourn her passing her faithful and devoted husband, John and his children, John Jr of Hayward, Gerald of Harlingen, Texas, Betty Werts of Clarinda; and Catherine Slevin of Kearney, Nebr, two sons-in-law, two daughters-in-law and eight grandchildren, her loving sister and brother-in-law Lennie and Will Preston, a sister-in-law, Adelia Sturm of Kennedy, New, York; nieces nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Martin Sturm.
