James
Barker, 72, died at 10:30 am Sunday at the Lenox Rest Home. Services were held Tuesday at the Bender
Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Duckett officiating. Burial was in the Lenox
Cemetery.
OBITUARY
James
Richard Barker, son of Stephen and Elizabeth A. Barker was born March 17, 1886
in Scotland Co., Mo. and passed away at the Lenox Rest Home April 27, at the
age of 72 years, 1 month and 10 days.
He was
married to Sarah Jane Hocker March 20, 1907. To this union were born 5 children: Ethel L
Spring of Lenox, Ellis of Clarinda, Elmer and Jesse of Lenox and Luell of Sharpsburg.
His wife
died August 18, 1916, leaving five small children. He was also preceded in death by his parents,
two brothers, four sisters, one grandchild and one great grandchild. He leaves to mourn in addition to his
children, two sisters, Manda Hocker of Greentop, Mo. and Mollie Hayes of Burlington, one
brother, Frank of Sharpsburg, ten grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and a
host of nieces and nephews and friends.
Mr. Barker
spent his early life in Missouri. Following the death of his wife he moved his family to Taylor County in
the vicinity of Lenox where he lived until his death.

Jack
David Beach, youngest son of the late Mr and Mrs George H Beach, was born near Lenox, Mar 23, 1909, and
passed away at his home in Tacoma, Wash., Feb 26, 1958. He grew to manhood at
Lenox, later going to Idaho, where he was married to Miss Roma Simonson.

to mourn are his wife, Roma and one son, Jay Dee of Tacoma; his brothers and
sisters, Mrs Bertille B

Grace Lavina Van Winkle -
Grace Lavina Bender, daughter of Isaiah Van Winkle and Marinda Blackman Van Winkle was born in Wapello Co., Iowa
Sept 20, 1872. When a young girl she joined the Methodist
church. At 12 years of age she with her parents moved to near Maloy, Iowa.
She
was united in marriage in 1893 to Perry Bender and moved to her present farm
home where she spent the remainder of her life, except for one year which was
spent in her daughter Maye's home.
To
this union two daughters were born, Reva Morey who preceded
her in death In 1951 and Maye Matthews. Surviving are: Maye and son-in-law Robert Matthews; five grandchildren:
Kenneth Matthews, Clearfield, Carroll Matthews, Diagonal; Roberta Maye Cook, Lenox; Phyliss Goodale, Clearfield; and Adra Bailey, Diagonal; two sisters
one
brother, Mrs Cora Smith, San Diego, Calif; Mrs Bertha Ray, Brush,
Colo.; Fay Van Winkle, Clearfield; 11 great grandchildren,
a number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
The
welfare of her family and loved ones was first in her
thoughts.
Her
great granddaughters were flower bearers: Virginia Lee Cook, James Matthews,
Suzanne Cook and Leila Sue Goodale. Pall bearers were
Ralph Kiplinger, Harry Bentley, Olyn Davis, Aster
Nelson, Howard Stephens and Don Stephens.

Funeral
services were held Sunday afternoon at Missouri Valley for Benjamin T. Boulden, 90, of Bentonville, Ark., former resident of
Missouri Valley. Survivors include his
widow Anna; a son William of Missouri Valley, a daughter Mrs Hazel Stevens of Denver, Colo., 4 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Dr.
R. W. Boulden is a grandson. Dr. and Mrs Boulden and sons attended the funeral.

21.
The body is being brought to Lenox and will arrive Friday afternoon.

at 9:30 am with burial in the Lenox cemetery.
Bridgeman
was never married.

Bruner, Daniel –
Daniel
Bruner, son of Landy H and Catherine Bruner was born
near North Henderson Ill. May 31, 1874 and passed away at his home in
Clearfield March 14, 1958 at the age of 83 years, 9 months and 14 days.
In 1882 he moved with his parents to a farm 5 miles southeast of
Conway and later to a farm 5 miles southwest of Clearfield.
On Feb. 22, 1899
he was united in marriage to Mary Blanche Knox of Clearfield. They made their home on a farm 4½ miles
southwest of Clearfield until the summer of 1952 when they moved to their
present home.
Eight
children were born to this union: Fred Bruner and Ruth Sundell of Conway, Bertha Wiley of Mt. Ayr, John Roland of
North Hollywood, Calif., Marietta Abarr, Alice
Whitmore, Mildred Matthews and Helen Lyddon of
Clearfield. His parents and two
brothers, William and Orlin preceded him in death.
He was a
faithful member of Greenwood Methodist Church, and later transferred his
membership to the Clearfield Methodist Church. He was always willing to lend a
helping hand.
Dan was in
failing health for several years but not seriously so until a week preceding
his death.
He is
survived by his wife Blanche, his eight children, two daughters-in-law, five
sons-in-law, twenty-five grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren. They added much joy to his later years.
Funeral
services were from the Clearfield Methodist Church Sunday, Mar 15 with Rev
Howard Ball officiating. Burial was in
Clearfield Cemetery.

Casey, Cora Bell Caldwell –
Mrs. Cora
Bell Casey, 81, of Creston died at the hospital there Sunday after a short
illness. Funeral services were Wednesday
at Creston with burial in Lenox.
Mrs. Casey
was born at Meadiapolis, Iowa May 23, 1876, the
daughter of Samuel and Margaret Caldwell. She was married at Lenox Jan. 29, 1902 to Charley B. Casey. They lived on a farm near Prescott and later
near Kent, moving to Creston in 1925.
Her husband
survives. A daughter, Violet, died as a
young woman.
Mrs. Casey
was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Creston.

Colyn, Nora Magnolia Alexander -
Mrs Charles Colyn, 69, a resident of this community since
1929 died Thursday evening at her home here. Although she suffered from
arthritis and was confined to a wheel chair, she had been able to help keep the
work done in the home until the last few days of her life. The last few years
she had woven more than 1,000 rugs on a
hand loom.
She
was a former school teacher and wife of a retired minister.
Funeral
services were conducted Sunday at the Salem Church of the Brethren by Rev W. H.
Brower of South English. Burial was at Salem.
Obituary
Nora
Magnolia Alexander, daughter of John and Hannah Mincer Alexander, was born on June 11, 1888 at Pontusic,
Ill. When a small child she moved with
her parents to a farm near New Sharon, Iowa, then to Knoxville, living there
during her early school days. Later the
family moved to Monroe, Iowa where she completed her high
school education, and taught school until her marriage on June 28, 1911 to Charles A. Colyn.
She
moved with her husband to a farm near Derby, Iowa, living there until 1913 when
they relocated on a farm near Osceola to assume pastoral duties at the Church
of the Brethren. During
this time, three children were born: Olive Miriam, Charles Junior, and John
Leonard. In 1924 the family moved to a
farm near Leon, where they served the Franklin Church of the Brethen. While
there, the fourth child, David Alexander blessed their home. After serving this church for five years, the
family moved to a farm near Lenox, to assume the pastorate of the Salem Church
of the Brethen.
In
1939 the family moved to the town of Lenox and have since resided there. Feeling the need to
help during the shortage of teachers during the war she again started teaching
rural school in 1943, and continued to do so for four years.
In her
early life, Mr. Colyn made her confession and was
baptized into the Church of the Brethren at Prairie City, Iowa. Her life has been a busy, active one,
constantly serving her Maker at all times. She never saw a need without yielding a helping hand. After her suffering for many years, she was
called to her heavenly home on the evening of Feb. 13, 1958 at the age of 69
years, 8 months and 2 days.
She
will be greatly missed by the family, her husband Charles, her four children,
her ten grandchildren and other relatives plus a host of friends.
Those
of the immediate family who came from a distance to
attend the funeral were the daughter, Olive Miriam Ranck and
son
Tommy
from Portland, Ore., and the three sons, Charles Jr and John Leonard and their families, from McPherson, Kan., and David Alexander
from Harper, Kansas.

Roy –
Roy Egleston, son of Benjamin H and Ida Cole Egleston was born on a farm near Carbon, Iowa May 3,
1888. He passed from this life May 12,
1958 at his home west of Sharpsburg, Iowa at the age of 70 years, 9 days after
a lingering illness. He had farmed in
Adams and Taylor Counties all his life.
He was
united in marriage to Verdie Sanders in Adams County
April 13, 1909. To this marriage three
children were born: Lester of Portland, Ore., Marvin of West Des Moines and
Emma Lou (Mrs Clem Roberts) of Vancouver, Wash.
Besides his
wife and children he leaves to mourn one sister, Mrs Elizabeth Zuber of Estacada, Ore. 5 grandchildren and
1 great granddaughter, a number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
He was
preceded in death by his parents, two sister and three brothers.
He was a
devoted husband and father, and was always ready to help his friends and
neighbors.
Funeral
services were held May 15, 1958 at 2 pm from the Bender Funeral Home in Lenox,
Rev Burton Collier officiating. Interment was in Gravity Cemetery.

England, Dorothy Marie Rechtenbach –
Mrs. Walter
England, Clearfield farm wife, died at Mercer hospital early Tuesday. She had been in a critical condition since
she suffered gunshot wounds at her home April 27.
Ringgold
County officials reported that Mr England had taken
the gun outside to fire at dogs which were chasing the sheep. When he came in to reload, the gun discharged
and Mrs England was struck in the back.
Survivors
include her husband, three children, Karen, Gerald and Donny, all of the home;
her mother, Mrs Minnie Rechtenback of Creston, sisters and a brother.
Funeral
services were May 8 at Clearfield.

Louisa Samantha Watkins “Manta” -
Mrs Manta Grubb, 90, a longtime resident of Conway, died at
her home there Monday forenoon, Feb 24 after an illness of
several months.
Funeral
services will be held at the Conway Methodist church,
at 2 p m today, Feb 27, Rev Howard DeVore officiating. Burial
in Conway cemetery.
Mrs Grubb is survived by a daughter, Miss Audrey Grubb of the home; two sons,
Garrett Grubb and Milton Grubb of Anthony,
Kan.
There are several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Louisa Samantha Watkins “Manta” -
Louisa
Samantha Watkins, daughter of J G and Frances Watkins was born March 25, 1867
in McDonaugh County, near the town of MaComb, Ill. and passed away at
her home in Conway Feb. 24, 1958. She
came to Taylor County in 1876 with her parents, settled on a farm 3 miles east
of Conway where she resided until she was married.
She was
united in marriage to William L Grubb of Conway Feb. 16, 1890. To this union six children were born, 3 boys
and 3 girls. Two daughters preceded her
in death, Edith Mae and Mildred died in infancy. Her husband, William preceded her in death
January 14, 1937. Also
her son Lloyd, who died Oct 22, 1954. Living children are Garrett C Grubb , Milton L
Grubb on Anthony, Kan. One daughter, Audrey Grubb, at home.
She was
united to the Methodist Church at the age of 15 and lived in that Christian
faith in her home and community and was an active member in the church until
her health prevented her. She has been a
member of the Rebekah Lodge for 60 years and an
active member many years until her health prevented her from going to
lodge. She was a great lover of her home
and her thoughts where for her family.
She had been
in failing health for the last 7 years. On Jan. 11, 1931 she fell and broke her shoulder and from that time on
she has never seen a well day but she was always cheerful, did very little
complaining. All was done that human
hands could do to relieve her.
She leaves
to mourn her three children, seven grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, a
number of nieces and nephews and a host of relatives and friends.

Elva M. Curphey –
Funeral
services and burial were Sunday Feb 20 in Onarga,
Ill. for Mrs. A C Hahne of Onarga,
who died Feb 14. Mrs. Hahne was the former Elva M. Curphey.
The daughter
of John and Carrie Curphey, she was born in Nebraska
May 24, 1891 and moved to Lenox when a child, attending school here and
graduating from high school. She
graduated as a nurse from a St. Joseph, Mo. hospital in 1914.
On June 21,
1916 she was married at Onarga to A C Hahne. They lived for a time in Chicago.
Surviving
are the husband and one son, John, one daughter Mrs. Marilyn Warneck, two grandchildren, one brother Harold Curphey of Onarga, two sisters, Mrs Edith Hildebrand and Mrs Lucile Hawkins.
Mrs. Huhne was a member of the Onarga Methodist Church, the OES and Legion Auxiliary.

Guy Hulen of Monroe City, Mo., brother of Mrs Francis Folcey,
died Friday evening. The funeral was Tuesday. Mr and Mrs Folcey went to attend

Sheirl A Johnson, 83, died at his home in Frontenac, Kan., Friday, Mar 28. Mr Johnson was born Feb 15, 1875 in Lenox, and lived here
until he was 29 years of age. In his adult years here he operated the Johnson
Harness shop.
He was
a lumber dealer in Arcadia, Neb., for many years.
Survivors
include two daughters, Miss Shirley Johnson of the home in Frontenac and Mrs Joan Rahorn, Pryor, Okla., a
brother Earl of Deerfield, Mo., two sisters, Mrs Bertha Wensell, Sand Springs, Okla., and Mrs Nona Rogers, York, Neb., also two grandchildren.
Burial was
Mar 30 at Arcadia, Nebraska.

Miller of Casey suffered a heart attack Sunday evening
while doing his chores and passed away Monday morning at the Dexter hospital. Mrs. Miller who will be
remembered by many as the former Marilyn Potts daughter of Ray Potts of Stuart.

are his widow and 2 children. Funeral was Wednesday at Casey.

Mrs Florence
Porter, 93, died Monday morning at her home here. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs Mae Carruthers, who has cared
for her mother the past eight years. Mrs Porter suffered a stroke three years ago. Her husband, Frank preceded her in death.
Other
survivors are two granddaughters, Mrs Louis Brown of
Lenox and Mrs Palmer Frydenberg of Champaign, Ill.

Florence Eldora Smith –
Florence
Eldora Smith, the daughter of John H and Polly Smith was born March 7, 1865 on
a farm seven miles southeast of Pella, Iowa. She was the youngest of six children, all of whom have preceded her in
death. She grew to young womanhood on
her parents farm serving as organist and teacher of a
boys Sunday School class for several years in a church on her parents’ farm.
On February
14 [can’t read] she was united in marriage to Joseph Franklin Porter who
preceded her in death in March 1939. One
daughter, Mae was born to this union. They all lived on a farm one mile south of Prairie City until 1895 when
they moved to Prairie City. Mrs. Porter
became very active in church work there, also serving as overseers of the poor
in Prairie City.
In March
1908 they came to Lenox settling on a farm 3½ miles north, where they lived
until moving to Lenox in 1914.
Those who
remain to mourn her passing include her daughter Mae Carruthers of Lenox, and two granddaughters Frances (Mrs Louis
Brown) of Lenox and Leone, (Mrs Palmer Frydenberg) of Champaign, Ill.
Mr and Mrs Porter united with the Methodist Church during the
pastorate of Rev Walter Morgan. Mrs Porter was active in the Ladies Aid Society and taught
a young women’s Sunday School class for six
years. When her health began to fail
about 15 years ago, she had to give up her church work. During four of the last eight years in which
Mae cared for her, she was confined to her bed.
Death came
at 10:45 on Monday morning May 26, 1958 at her home in Lenox.
Services
were held May 28 at Bender Funeral Home, the Rev. B C Collier officiating. Burial was in the Lenox Cemetery.

Leonard William –
Leonard
William Ross, son of Joseph W. and Nettie L. Ross was born in Taylor County,
Ia. April 21, 1882 and passed away March 4, 1958 at the home of his daughter,
the Rev Marguerite E. Shephard of Cimaron,
Kan. at the age of 75 years, 10 months and 13 days.
At the
age of 17 he was baptized in the Methodist Church at Bedford. He was married to Ida Mae Kline. To this union one son was born, Leslie J.
Ross. Ida Mae passed away three years
later and the father and young son lived and farmed with Leonard’s father,
Joseph W Ross of Corning.
Leonard
was later married to Elizabeth E. Blanchard of Lenox. To this union seven children were born, all
living except Leonard William Jr. who passed away at the age of 23 years.
Elizabeth
preceded Leonard in death Nov 22, 1956. Surviving
children
are Leslie J Ross, Maurice P Ross,
Beulah May Cobb, Marvin D Ross, Mildred Lucille Thompson and their families,
all of San Diego, Cal; also Rev Marguerite E Shephard of Cimaron, Kan., and Lawrence B Ross of Corning, his
wife Mary and family; also a brother
J C
Ross of Leon, 16 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
Leonard's
health started failing several years ago. He lived 18 years with his son
Laurence and family of Corning on the farm. The loving care and helpfulness of
Laurence and Mary gave him a safe and enjoyable home life.
He
will be remembered by his family and friends for his early
success at farming and stock raising.
Services
were held March 8 at Corning, Rev Joe Wallace, minister of the First Baptist
Church, officiating. The burial was at Lenox.

Mrs. Elsie
Sexton of Gravity died Friday April 25 at the age of 77 years, 1 month and 20
days.
Her husband
preceded her in death September 1944, one son, Gail in March 1958. She is survived by 4 sons and 4 daughters, 4
sons-in-law and 4 daughters-in-law, 27 grandchildren and 23 great grand-
children. Carl Sexton and wife are a son and
daughter-in-law.
Funeral services
were held at the Shum Funeral Home in Bedford at 2 o’clock Tuesday.

Smith, 86, died at Rosary Hospital Tuesday morning. She suffered a heart attack at her home and
died shortly after arrival at the hospital.

Mrs.
Clarence Butler received the sad news that her nephew Clinton Wells of
Pasadena, Cali., had passed away with a coronary heart
attack at a hospital where he had been the past two weeks. He was the son of Mr and Mrs Clinton Wells Sr. and spent quite a few of
his childhood days in Lenox with his Grandma Stoner.
Funeral
services were Tuesday afternoon in Pasadena. He is survived by his wife, parents and Stoner relatives.

Wilson, 84, of Osceola, retired farmer, died there at 5 pm

at the Lyle Maner nursing home.

70, farmer living southwest of town, died Sunday night. Funeral services were Wednesday afternoon

OBITUARY
Joel Cecil
Winslow, the son of Charles Winslow and Cora Alice Walker Winslow was born
November 13, 1887 on a farm five miles southwest of Lenox.
On April 1,
1916, he was united in marriage to Ella Krueger in Creston, Ia. They made their home on a farm where he was
born and there he spent all but the last two weeks of his life. He farmed until about five years ago, when
his health began to fail.
His parents
and one sister, Minnie Kirkman preceded him in
death. Those that remain to mourn his
passing are his wife Ella and Otta Price, who made his
home with them in his early years. Several nieces and nephews and cousins also remain.
Death came
about 11:00 pm on Sunday, June 8, at the age of 70 years, 5 months and 25 days.

Mrs. Frank Routh is a
niece of Mr. Wyant and Mrs Glenndon Walter is a granddaughter.
Obituary
James
Uriah Wyant, youngest son of George A and Sarah Ann
Morrow Wyant was born near Holton, Kansas, August 18, 1867
and passed away February 13 195& in the Decatur County
Hospital,
Leon, Iowa at the age of ninety years, five months
and twenty six days.
At the
age of seven years he moved with his family to Ringgold
County,
Iowa and settled on a farm on Platte River where he and his father later
operated a grist mill.
He
attended rural school in Lincoln township and academy
in Lenox. December 9, 1891 was united in marriage with Margaret Alice Long. To
this union were born five children: Hugh B. and G A of
Leon; Ruth
Graham
of Brazil South America; Orville and Helen who proceeded him in death.
At an
early age he united with the Platte Valley United Presbyterian
Church,
transferring his membership wherever he lived. At Bedford
he was Sunday School superintendent and was ordained as Elder. At
the time of his death he was elder at Leon.
For a period
of twenty-five years he served as cashier in banks in Clearfield, Bedford and
Kinsley, Iowa. With the exception of
three years in California and a short time in Ironwood, Michigan, his life was
spent in Iowa, the past nine years in Leon.
Those
left lo mourn his passing are his beloved wife, two sons, one daughter, ten
grandchildren, twelve great
grandchildren, one niece Mrs Carrie Routh of Lenox, and other relatives and friends.
