General Hospital in Des Monies and passed away March 10, 1955, after a short
stay of only one week.
She

Amanda
Hanna, youngest child of Fernando and Sarah Hanna, was born in Guernsey County,
Ohio, Nov 22, 1863, and departed this life at the home of her daughter in St
Joseph, Mo., March 14, 1955, at the age of 91 years, 3 Months and 20 days.
At the
age of 19 she came to Iowa with her parents, where they settled on a farm west
of Sharpsburg. On March 3, 1887, she was united in marriage to William Blair. To this union were born 3 daughters
and 4 sons. Her husband passed away in 1918. She was preceded in death by her
father, mother, 1 sister, 3 brothers, 1 daughter, 1 son, 2 grandsons and her
husband.
She
leaves to mourn her passing 2 daughters, Maude Welch of Lenox and Opal Schiltz of St Joseph, Mo.; also 3 sons, Robert of
Sharpsburg; Walter of Conway and Wilbur at home; 5 grandchildren, 5 great
grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren, and a
host of friends.
Her
entire life, after coining to Iowa was spent in the Sharpsburg
vicinity.
She will be remembered as a loving mother and friend, and one who was
faithfully devoted to her family.
Funeral
services were held Thursday, March 17 at the Methodist church in Sharpsburg,
Rev Howard DeVore officiating. Pall bearers were Chas
Knott, Coral Knapp, Albert Beck, Dewey Evans, Chas Smith and Marion Wilson.
Interment was in Gravity cemetery.

Mrs Gertie Firkins received word Saturday that her
brother
Emery Branan of Davenport had been found dead. He evidently
died of heart failure while he slept. It was 6 hours before he
was found and 30 hours before a relative was located.
Funeral
services were Tuesday, March 8 at Villisca and burial at Guss.
After
she received word her brother's death, Mrs Firkins
went to Guss to stay until Monday with her mother, Mrs Viola Branan.

hospital in Corning after an extended illness.
Services

Katherine Doran, the daughter of Martha Ellen and Medford Doran, was born June
23, 1891 at Springfield, Mo., and after an illness of ten months departed from
this life March 24, 1955 at 9:45 a. m. in the Rosary Hospital, Corning, Iowa,
at the age of 63 years, 9 months and 1 day.
On Feb
16, 1911 she was united in marriage to Virgil Stanley
Brown. To this union seven children were born. They are Austin
of Prescott, la.; Delman, Darrell and Roscoe of Lenox,
la.; Mrs
James
A Brinker (Thelma) of Pemberville, Ohio and Mrs Earl
Boswell
(Wilma) of Des Moines, Iowa. One daughter, Lorene
Francis, preceded her in death in 1927 at the age of 2 years.
She
was also preceded in death by her parents and one sister,
Nellie Brockus. She leaves to mourn her
passing besides her
devoted husband, children, and 14 grandchildren, her sister, Mrs
OIlie Clark of Springfield, Mo.; two brothers, William Doran of
Crossroads,
Mo., and Clyde Doran of Springfield, Mo., many
nieces and nephews and a host of .friends.
The
earlier years of her life were spent in Missouri, and since
1926
she has been a resident of Adams County, Iowa. She was
baptized in the Christian church at Witty, Mo., and has been a
faithful member of the Stringtown Federated Community
church since moving to this community. She was truly a woman who spent her life in
service for others.

Cora Mae Baldwin –
Mrs.
Ira Campbell passed away at her home at 12:30 a.m. Sunday. She had suffered a heart attack. She had been an invalid for years.
Funeral
services were Tuesday afternoon at the Church of Christ with the Rev. Cecil
Simonton officiating. Burial was in
Lenox Cemetery.
Cora
Mae Baldwin was born on a farm near Lenox Oct. 2, 1882 to Omar C and Carrie B
Baldwin. She passed away at her home in
Lenox Sunday, May 1, 1955 at the age of 72 years and 7 months.
On
Nov. 23, 1904 she was united in marriage to Ira J. Campbell. To this union were born 3 sons, Leland B,
Willard C and Chester B.
At the
age of 11 she confessed Christ at the Church of Christ in Lenox and was also a
member of Thursday Girls for several years.
On the
23rd of November last year she and her husband celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
She
suffered a paralytic stroke Nov. 7, 1951. She was a patient and cheerful sufferer through her long illness.
Her
Christian character was exemplified by her thoughtfulness and concern for her
friends as well as the members of her household. She was an inspiration to all who knew her.
Surviving
are her husband and three sons, Leland and Willard of Lenox and Chester of Des
Moines, five grandsons, 4 granddaughters, and 2 great granddaughters. Her parents and one brother, Ira Baldwin
preceded her in death.

Mr and Mrs Frank Cunningham and Mary Ann returned
Saturday evening from Nortonville, Kan., where they had been called because of
the death of his mother, Mrs Charles Cunningham, 81.
Funeral
services were held at 9:30 Friday morning in St Joseph's
Catholic church in Nortonville, Kansas. The Rev Father Herkins of Nortonville conducted the services, Father
Cleary of Excelsior Springs Mo., gave the sermon. Interment was in St Joseph's
cemetery at Nortonville.
Living to mourn their loss are her husband, Charles Cunningham:
thirteen children, 6 sons, Phil and John Cunningham
of Topeka, Kan.; Stephen, Toledo, Ohio; Frank of Lenox; Robert of Memphis,
Tenn., and Leonard of Kansas City, Kan. Seven daughters, Mrs Ben Domann
of
Winchester, Kan.; Mrs Fred Brinkley and Mrs Claude Weishaar of
Nortonville; Mrs Margaret McCoy of Denver, Col.; Mrs Harry Weaver of Germany; Sister Rita Louise of
Providence Hospital, Kansas City, Kan.; Sister Joan Therese of St Ann's
Convent, Excelsior Springs, Mo.
There
are 29 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
All
were able to attend the services except Mrs Harry Weaver,
whose husband, Major H L Weaver, is stationed in Germany.

Dunbar, Oliver
Cromwell -
Oliver
Cromwell Dunbar, who would have been 89 years old this August, died Saturday
night, April 2 in a hospital at Atascadero, Calif., after a long illness.
Mr Dunbar was born Aug 2, 1886 at Centerville, la. In later years he moved to
Lenox where he was a photographer for 33 years. He left Lenox in 1927 to make
his home in California.
He is
survived by a daughter, Mrs Nora Bond of Atascadero;
three sons, Carl Dunbar of San Luis Obispo, Ellsworth and Robert Dunbar, both
at Porterville; five grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren. There are a number of relatives in
Lenox and vicinity.
Funeral
services were at the Chapel of the Roses April 5, Ralph C Isbell officiating.
Burial was at Atascadero.

Fitzgerald,
Nancy Ellen Finch -
Howard
Fitzgerald received word Saturday of the death that
morning of his mother, Mrs Nancy Fitzgerald at the Shenandoah
hospital after a lingering illness. Daughter of Waldo and Julia Finch, Nancy Ellen Finch
was born at Logansport, Ind., May 14, 1867 and died Apr 2, 1955 at age of 87
years, 10 months and 18 days.
The
family moved to Kent community in the early 1880s. In November, 1890, she was
united in marriage to Thomas E
Fitzgerald
and they established their home near Kent. To this
union were born two children, a son, Howard Fitzgerald of
Clearfield
and a daughter, Mrs Alice Lindburg of Essex, la.
Mrs Fitzgerald had made many friends and was always loyal to her faith, having been
a member of the Kent Methodist church for over 60 years.
The husband
preceded her in death in 1936. Surviving are the son and daughter, one grandson
Thomas E Fitzgerald and a great grandson, William James Fitzgerald; also a
sister, Mrs Dell Brown of Yakima, Wash., other
relatives and many friends.
Funeral
services were held Monday at Kent Methodist church by Rev Ida Roberts of Cedar,
Ia. assisted by Rev H Ball of Clearfield. Interment was in Maple Hill cemetery
at Cromwell.
From
Clearfield, besides the immediate relatives, Mr and Mrs

Fitzgerald and Mr and Mrs Thos E Fitzgerald attending the
funeral rites were Mrs H McClintock, Mrs G Brott, Mrs Minnie

Hersom, Joel -
The
funeral services for Joel Hersom, 94, were held at
the
Methodist
church in Diagonal Monday, 2 p. m., April 18. Burial
was in Knowlton cemetery. Mr Hersom, when 10 years of age, came from
Illinois and has since lived on the same farm NE of Clearfield. Mr Hersom suffered a broken hip
two weeks ago and he was taken to Creston hospital, but due to advanced age
could not survive the injury and he died Saturday, April 16. He is survived by
one daughter, Mrs Nora Beamen of Diagonal.

Walter Lovitt, 76, son of Mr and Mrs John Lovitt, a life long
resident
of Clearfield, died Tuesday at 2 p m in Douglas County Hospital, Omaha, following
a short illness. Mr Lovitt followed various occupations which helped many people. He also until the last
few years, helped care for the sick and made many friends. He made his home of
late years in the place he purchased near the Clearfield Park. He was preceded in death by his parents and
two sisters, Stella Burns and Sadie Lovitt. He is
survived by one sister, Mrs Helen
Knox
of Lenox and several nephews and nieces, other relatives
and many friends. Funeral services were held at J R Crew Funeral Home Friday at 2 p
m. Interment was in Clearfield Cemetery.
Walter,
son of John and Elmira Lovitt was born near Kent,
Iowa, Dec 29, 1878. He passed at Omaha, Neb., March 1, 1955 at the age of 76
years, 2 months and 2 days. He spent all
but about 25 years of his life in and near Clearfield. Walter was of a kind and loving disposition
always willing to help those who needed him.
Those
of the family preceding him to their eternal home were his loving mother and
father and two sisters, Estella Mae and Sarah Ann. He leaves to mourn his passing his sister
Stella Knox of Lenox, also endeared to him for his loving kindness are his four
nieces, Mrs. Lillian Woods of Des Moines, Mrs. Harold Mohler of Bedford, Mrs Max Pool, Mt. Ayr and Mrs Eugene Blane,
Kensington, Maryland. He leaves seven
grandnephews and six grandnieces and friends.
Walter’s
earthly body will rest in Clearfield Cemetery.

Andy
Nelson born in Smolien Sweden in 1871 passed away
March 17, 1955 at the Elmcrest Nursing Home in Des
Moines at the age of 84 years.
When 18
years of age he came to America and located in SE Iowa where he established his blacksmith,
shop.
He
later married Myrtle Dilts and to this union were
born one
daughter Mrs Wm (Opal) Williams of Des Moines and three sons,
Carl
and Paul of Silvis, Ill. and Elmo of Des Moines. Upon moving to Clearfield he continued his blacksmith trade for 57 years.
His wife died two years ago and
due to failing health he has lived with his daughter, Mrs Williams in Des Moines.
Mr Nelson was a great reader and retained a wonderful memory.
He was
of a cheerful disposition and enjoyed visiting with
his friends. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 53 years.
Besides
the daughter and 3 sons he is survived by 4 grandchildren
and 5 greet grandchildren.
Funeral
services were held Saturday. March 19 at the J R Crew
Funeral Home, Rev R Graham officiating. Burial in
Clearfield Cemetery.

Ed
Nelson, 79, passed away at his home here Sunday night. Services were held at
Bender Funeral Home Wednesday, Feb 16, the Rev Willard Morris officiating.
Burial was in Lenox cemetery. Mr and Mrs Nelson observed their
50th wedding anniversary last October.
OBITUARY
James
Edwin Nelson, son of Matthew and Nancy Nelson, was born in Washington, la., Nov 10, 1875. When he was 6 years old his family moved
to Lenox, where he lived for the rest of his life. He attended the Lenox
schools and learned the barber trade, which he practiced until he retired in
1948, except for about ten years of farming near
Lenox.
On
October 28, 1904, he was united in marriage to Cora Belle
Wilson
at Brooks, Iowa. To this union were born his daughter,
Emily, and another daughter who died in infancy.
He was
a long-time member of the Modern Woodman of America.
Mr Nelson passed away after a long illness, at his home in
Lenox on Feb 13, 1956 at
the age of 79 years, 3 months and 3 days.
He was
preceded in death by his sisters, Anna Mary, Sarah Elizabeth, Maggie Belle Paymal, and Issie May Monroe ; and by his brothers John, William, Rossie and Roy. Surviving are his foster sister, Mrs Edna Stevens of Creston, la.; hjs wife, Cora Belle; and his daughter, Emily Nelson, who
is employed at the Greater Community Hospital in Creston, Iowa. He leaves a
wide circle of friends, but he will be
missed most deeply in his home and his family.
At the
funeral service Rolland Buxton sang "Beautiful Isle
Somewhere"
and "Beautiful Garden of Prayer," accompanied by Mrs Lois Morris. Pall bearers were John Nagel, Dick Dunbar, Orville Bricker, Chas K Wurster, Fred Barrans and
Bert Peacock.

Reed, Charlie Andrew –
Charlie
A Reed, 70, died Sunday morning about 9 o'clock of a cerebral hemorrhage. In the absence of Vertis Reeders,
he had gone to their home to take care of their dogs.
When
he did not return home promptly Mrs. Reed called Mrs. Betty Refer, a neighbor
of Reeders. Mrs. Refer looked for Mr. Reed but did not find him. Mrs. Reed went to look for him and found he had
passed away.
Funeral
services were Tuesday afternoon April 26 at Sharpsburg Presbyterian Church
conducted by Rev. Donald Gibson and Rev H D Butts. Burial was in Lenox Cemetery, with Masonic
services.
OBITUARY
Charlie
Andrew Reed was born in Farris, Ill. Aug. 13, 1884 to David Steward and Etta Love Hodges Reed. When he was about one year old he traveled in a covered wagon with his parents
to Garden City, Kansas where they made their home for the next five years. Then
they returned to Lenox where Charlie grew to adulthood.
On Feb
23, 1910 he was united in marriage to Flora Ouderkirk
and they established their home on a farm near Sharpsburg, la.
To
this union two children were born, Cecil and Ruth. But after
nine brief years his wife passed away. In 1920 he was married to Mattie Shoemaker,
who again made his home complete and happy with her daughter, Marvel, also
joining the family.
Charlie
confessed his faith in Christ at the Presbyterian church Jan 23, 1909, and was ordained as a Deacon May 4, 1915. He was elected Clerk of
the Session in 1940, and was delegate to the National Synod
at Cincinnati, Ohio in 1951. Thus he was
finishing 40 years of service as an officer of his church.
He
joined the Masonic lodge at Gravity, la. in 1924,
later transferring to the Tremont lodge at Lenox, for which he was always held
in high esteem. He was also assessor in
Taylor county, serving Marshall, Platte and Grant
townships for almost 35 years.
He and
his wife returned to Lenox in January of 1945 and resided there until his death
April 24, 1955. He was a loving and faithful husband and father. His mother, father and one sister, Alma Becherer preceded him in death.
He
leaves to mourn his passing, his loving wife, Mattie, step daughter, Mrs Marvel Shum, of Iowa Falls, la.; one son, Cecil of
Bedford, la.; one daughter, Mrs Ruth Reeder of Lenox;
one brother, Ross of Gravity, la.; one sister, Mrs Laura McPherren of CJarinda,
la., and three grandchildren: Judith, Reed of Des Molnes, Barbara Reed of
Bedford, and James Shum of Iowa Falls, Iowa.

William
Franklin Schaffer, son of Elizabeth and William Schaffer was born January 28,
1888 near Mercer Center and passed away April 14, 1955 at the Rosary Hospital
after a long illness. He was 67 years, 2
months and 18 days of age.
William
Schaffer and Alta Nash were united in marriage November 4, 1908, and to this
union eight children were born. They are
Kenneth of Lenox; Orville, Deryl and Leo, all of
Corning; Harry of Richmond, Calif.; LaVerne of
Brooks, la.; Velda Hardisty of Corning and Almeda Eggleston of Corning.
He is
survived by his wife Alta, eight children, four daughters-in-law, two
sons-in-law, fourteen grandchildren, four sisters: Margaret Williams of
Corning; Kate Miller of Indiana; Ella Moore of Creston;
Emma Orth of Lenox; and one brother, Jesse Schaffcr of Bippas, Ind.
He was
preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Carl. He leaves to mourn his
passing, many relatives and a host of friends. He became a member of the church
when a child. He was a kind and loving father and was always ready to lend a
helping hand to those
who needed it. He was most happy when he was around his children and grandchildren.
Services
were held Sunday, April 17, 1955 at 2 p m from the Christian church in Corning, la., with Rev Ray Nixon in charge. Interment was at
Walnut Grove cemetery. Music for the services was furnished by Roland Buxton
accompanied by Mrs Norma Paymal,
pianist. Pall bearers were Walter Nelson, Chester Nelson, John Brown, Don
Mercer, Wes Miller and Homer Walter.

Mrs Bell Weichert received word the last of the week that
her brother-in-law, Attorney W F Seevers of
Stanberry, Mo., had passed away in a Maryville hospital. Mrs Weichert went to be with her sister and attend
funeral services. She returned to Lenox Sunday, but expects to go back for a
few days with her sister.

Mrs Vernon R Smith passed away at Mary Greeley Hospital Ames, la.,
at 1:15 a. m. Thursday, Feb 17 at the age of 79 years and 48 days.
Sarah
Edna, daughter of James and Margaret Gilmore, was born Dec 31, 1875 near
Winthrop, la. At an early age her .family moved to Taylor Comity, la., and later to Coffee County, Kan. She attended Emporia
State Teachers College and taught school for several years
in Kansas and Iowa.
She
was married to Vernon R Smith of Sharpsburg, la.,
April 20, 1904 and to this union two children were born, Edna Garland,
now Mrs George L Beck of Ames, la., and Ethel Marjorie
Smith of the Iowa State College Library staff at Ames.
The
family lived on a farm at Sharpsburg, la., for a time,
later moving to Bedford, Iowa, where both Mr and Mrs Smith held county office. In 1942 Mr and Mrs Smith moved to Ames, until 1950, when: due to
failing health they moved to an apartment at the home of their daughter.
At an
early age Mrs Smith joined the Methodist church
taking an active part as long as her health permitted. Besides Mr Smith
and Garland and Marjorie, she leaves to mourn her loss a brother, Walter
Gilmore of LeRoy, Kan. Two sisters, Mrs R M Tuttle of New Market, la.,
and Mrs Ira Reed of White Pigeon, Mich.; and five
nieces and nephews.
Services
were held at the Adams Funeral Home Saturday, Feb 19 at 1:30 p. m. with the Rev
Raymond Shipman in charge. Burial was in the Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Arthur Sturm, son of Thomas and Nora Sturm was born
Feb. 4, 1888 near Dunlap, Ill. He died
on Friday March 25, 1955 enroute to the Creston
hospital.
Mr Sturm and Ethel May Leonard were joined in marriage at Creston, la., Jan 14, 1915. He
is survived by his devoted wife one son, Cleo Sturm of Clearfield, one
daughter, Mrs. Homer Minnick, of Lenox, one son died in 1928.
He
also leaves to mourn his death, six grandchildren, Karen

and Haldean Minnick, Dennis, David and Dale Sturm, 2
brothers, Harl Sturm of Gravity and Irve Sturm of Belt, Mont ; 4 sisters, Mrs Ledge Crawford of Gravity, Mrs Lulu Beemer of

his life he was engaged in farming in Taylor county.
He had a kind and happy disposition, always ready to lend a helping hand to

Toy, 84, died at 9 p m Sunday at Hotel Lenox where he had made his home the
past two years. Services were at the Bender Funeral Home Tuesday, April 5,
with, burial at Conway. Mr Toy was a retired farmer and had lived southwest Clearfield.
OBITUARY
William
Richard Toy was born Aug 22, 1870 at Chippewa Falls
Wisc., the son of Richard E and Lottie A Toy. He departed this
life on April 3, 1955 at Hotel Lenox, at the age of 84 years 8 months and 12 days.
At 3
years of age he came with his parents to Iowa. His father passed away the
following year. He resided on the same farm until January 15, 1953, when
stricken with sickness.
He was
preceded in death by his father, his mother, two brothers and two sisters, and
leaves to mourn his loss two sisters, Mrs Olive
Campbell of Mt Ayr and Miss Cora Toy of Lenox besides
nieces and nephews.
As a
young man he placed his trust in the Lord and lived true to his faith the
remaining years of his life.

Winslow, Mrs. Wm. R. -
Mrs Ralph Rundlett received the sad news Monday that her
aunt, Mrs Wm R Winslow of Silverton, Oregon, had
passed away
Thursday
evening, Feb 24. Her husband and 5
children survive.
Funeral
services and burial were at Silverton, Mrs Winslow was the daughter of Ab Henry and grew up on a farm near Sharpsburg

Wood, John -
Relatives
here received word of the death of John Wood, 82 of Idaho Falls, Idaho. His
nephew, Lloyd Wood, left Sunday to attend the funeral. Mrs Joe Wocd of Lenox is a sister-in-law. John Wood and his wife had been in Texas
spending the winter with their daughter. He
died on the bus on the way back to Idaho. Surviving are his
widow, 2
sons and one daughter. The family formerly
lived near Lenox in Adams County.
