Arthaud, F. L. – Relatives here received word Monday of the death of F. L. Arthaud of Chillicothe, Mo. The widow will be rememberd in Lenox as Dr. Frances Burgess, formerly Miss Fannie Rutledge. Haldeane Breach, 31, the son of Mrs. And Mrs. C. S. Beach of Sharpsburg, is dead, the result of injuries he received Saturday when he was crushed in an elevator shaft at Cheyenne, Wyo. Details of the mishap were not included in the telegram received by his parents here early this week and no word had been received up to noon Wednesday. Beach, Emery Haldene – Emery Haldene Beach was born near Sharpsburg, Iowa on Dec. 2, 1911. He was graduated from the Lenox High School in 1929 and later from Boyles College in Omaha. Since completing his schooling, Hal was employed by the Burlington Transportation Company continuously, with the exception of one year, during which he was employed in El Reno, Okla. and seven months, during which he served his country in the U. S. Army. He was honorably discharged from the service in June 1943.
Haldene was united in marriage to Jeanette Brooks in April 1931. To this union were born three children, Haldene Lee, 11, Ruth Joan, 9, and George Spencer, 5.
Haldene died Tuesday, August 13, 1943, at the age of 31 years and 9 months. His death resulted from an accident in Cheyenne, Wyo. On Saturday, August 28, 1943. Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford S. Beach of Sharpsburg, Ia., his wife and three children, his grandmother, Mrs. Mary Ann Page of Lenox and five brothers and four sisters, as follows: Lieut. Robert P. Beach of the U.S. Marine Corp, Camp Lejeune, N. C.; Mrs. Marvin Bender, Van Nuys, Calif.; Walter G. Beach, Omaha, Nebr.; Lieut. Don C. Beach, of the U.S. Army Camp Barkeley, Texas, Sgt. Dale H. Beach of the U.S. Air Corps, somewhere in England, Mrs. Julian Walter, Lenox, Ia., and Bill Lee, Marjorie Ruth and Elizabeth at home. In addition are a host of other relatives and numerous friends.

Funeral services for Frank Cameron, about 45, and a former Lenox resident, were held at Huron, S. D. Wednesday. Mr. Cameron died August 20 [1943] at his home in Huron. He was the brother-in-law of Mrs. Wayne Hale, and Mrs. Dick Hafnagel, both of whom accompanied by a brother, Geo. Page of Ottawa, Kans. attended the rites this week. A stroke she suffered September 21 [1943], Tuesday proved fatal to Mrs. Guy Campain, about 65, a long-time resident of Sharpsburg.
Mrs. Campain failed to regain consciousness and died shortly before noon at her home in Sharpsburg.
Surviving are her husband and two sons, Wesley, now serving in the armed forces and Frank of Bedford. Rites have been tentatively set for Friday from the Sharpsburg Presbyterian church. Lenox Time Table, Lenox, Iowa, Thursday, September 30, 1943
Campain, Phebe Jane Strong – Funeral services were Friday, October 1 [1943] from the Sharpsburg Presbyterian church for Mrs. Guy Campain, 65, a life long resident of Taylor county.
Mrs. Campain died September 28 ]1943], the result of a stroke she suffered a week before.
Surviving are her husband, two sons, John Westley of Council Bluffs and William Franklin of Bedford. She also leaves a sister, Mrs. Lydia Filbert of Sharpsburg and four granddaughters.

Campain, Phebe Jane – Phebe Jane Campain, daughter of Van R. and Martha Strong was born October 1, 1878 near Sharpsburg, Iowa and passed away at her home in Sharpsburg on September 28, 1943 at the age of 64 years, 11 months and 28 days.
She was married December 21, 1904 to Guy W. Campain in the same residence which has been their home for so many years. To this union two sons were born: John Westley of Council Bluffs, Ia. and William Franklin of Bedford, Ia.
She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, two sons and one sister, Lydia Filbert of Sharpsburg, and four grandchildren.
She joined the church in early childhood and was a member of the Presbyterian church of Sharpsburg at the time of her death.
Funeral services were held Friday, Oct 1, at the Presbyterian church, conducted by the Rev. J. W. Chase. Burial was at Lexington. Lenox Time Table, Lenox, Iowa, Thursday, October 7, 1943
Mrs. Ida Campbell, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. S. Stephenson, Saturday evening. Mrs. Campbell was 83 years of age and had been in ill health for the past year or more.

Mrs. William Clark, a former resident of Blockton died August 5 [1943] in Grant City. Funeral services were Saturday at Grant City, after which the body was brought to Blockton where interment was made in the Blockton cemetery. Mrs. Clark was 81 years of age. Roy E. Dawson, yard clerk for the Chicago Great Western railroad in Marshalltown, died at 6:10 p.m. Friday at the Deaconess hospital where he had been a patient since July 15 [1943]. He had been in poor health for the past month.
Mr. Dawson was born in Sheridan, Mo. on January 10, 1900. His childhood was spent at Oelwein, Iowa, where he received his education. He returned to Sheridan in 1930 and married Opal DeVault on February 15, 1932 at Grant City, Mo.
They operated a grocery store in Athlestan, Ia. for four and one half years and in 1941 he became an employee of the Chicago and Great Western railroad and worked at Athelstan until moving to Waterloo, Ia. in October 1942.
In December of the same year he moved to Marshalltown, he was affiliated with the St. Paul Episcopal church.
Funeral services were held at 4:30 Saturday afternoon at Estel Funeral Home in Marshalltown in charge of the Rev. Arthur Ecash, rector of St. Paul’s church.
The body was shipped to Blockton, Iowa to the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl DeVault, where the funeral was conducted by the Rev. R. C. Yades at 2:30 p.m. at the Christian Church.
Mr. Dawson is survived by his devoted wife, father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Golda Dawson of Sheridan, Mo.; one sister, Mrs. K. W. Robertson of Oelwein, Ia. and a host of relatives and friends. Lenox Time Table, Lenox, Iowa, Thursday, July 29, 1943
Frederick J. Deming, a former Lenox resident, died last month at his home in Hartford, Conn., friends here have been advised. As a small child Dr. Deming resided on the farm 5 miles southwest of Lenox on what is now known as the William Quinn farm. He has since been a resident of Connecticut. His death came suddenly following a heart attack. Rites were at Rocky Hill, Conn. Funeral services for John Gunderman, Lenox resident who died August 6 [1943] at his home, were held Monday from the Presbyterian Church United with the Rev. Earl Moneymaker in charge of the rites. Surviving are his widow; four sons, John of McMinnville, Ore., Loren of Villisca, Frank of Kansas City, Kans., and Harry of Atlantic; two daughters, Jennie Bigger of Lisbon, Ia. and Minnie Boom of Lucerne Valley, Calif. He also leaves a sister, Minnie Heaton of Lenox, 25 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Gunderman, John – John Gunderman, the son of Lorene and Dora Gunderman was born in Will County, Illinois, January 4, 1861 and died at his home in Lenox, Iowa August 8, 1943 at the age of 82 years, seven months and two days.
At the age of 10 he came with his parents to Taylor county where he has resided continuously since. On October 14, 1886 he was united in marriage to Annie Cox who survives and who so patiently cared for him in his illness.
He is also survived by four sons, John of McMinnville, Ore., Lorenz of Villisca, Ia., Frank of Kansas City, Kans., and Harry of Atlantic, Ia.; and by two daughters, Jennie Bigger of Lisbon, Ia., and Minnie Boom of Lucerne Valley, Calif. He also leaves a sister, Minnie Heaton of Lenox, 24 grandchildren and one great grandchild. On son, William, and a daughter, Dora, preceded him in death.
He became a member of the Presbyterian church in 1902. He also was a member of the Masonic Lodge for a number of years.

Word was received here by Mrs. John Slattery of the death of her brother, Charles Finn, a former Lenox resident. Mr. Finn died Tuesday, August 31 [1943] at Inglewood, Calif. Born and reared in Lenox, Mr. Finn left here many years ago. He is survived by his widow, a daughter, two grandchildren and his sister, Mrs. Slattery. Funeral services were Friday afternoon from the Conway Methodist church for George W. Hough, 83, longtime resident, who died at a Creston hospital on June 30 [1943] following a two weeks illness.
Surviving is his widow, three children, Harry W. of Anatone, Wash., Carl B. of San Diego, Calif., and Mrs. Maude Gillette of Galesburg, Ill. He also leaves eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren; a brother, John, of Windfield, Ia., and a half-sister, Mary Kingsley of Grandview, Wash. Rev. Z. M. Bressler. Hough, George W. – George W. Hough, son of Jeremiah and Elizabeth Hough, was born January 11, 1860 near Revana in Mercer county, Missouri. At the age of 5 years he moved with his parents to Monroe county, Iowa. For the past seventy years he has made his home in Taylor county. Following his marriage for the next 22 years he devoted his energies to the raising and feeding of livestock and in 1905 he moved with his family to Conway.
He was married to Anna R. Boyd March 23, 1882 and to this union 3 children were born, Harry W. of Anatone, Wash., Carl B. on San Diego, Calif. and Mrs. Maude Gillett of Galesburg, Ill. Last March Mr. and Mrs. Hough celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary.
Though drawing near to the western horizon of his earthly existence Mr. Hough continued active until suffering an affliction two months ago, from then on regardless of the care of loving hands and medical skill his health continued to fail and two weeks ago he was taken to the Great Community hospital in Creston where he answered the final summons into the great beyond June 30, 1943 having reached the age of 83 years, 5 months and 19 days.

James E. Jeffers, 76, the father of Coy Jeffers of Lenox, died Sunday at his home in Clarinda. He had been ill but a short time. Surviving is his widow; six sons and two daughters. Frank Jenkins was born February 10, 1877 near York, Neb. and passed away June 29, 1943 at Lenox, Iowa.
He was the youngest son of J. P. and Catherine Cotterall Jenkins and the last one a large family, his brothers and sisters having preceded him in death. He made his home in Nebraska until 1938 when he came to Iowa. He was a machinist by trade, receiving his training at Marion, Ohio, and held responsible positions among which was several years at the Union Pacific shops in Omaha.
When the call came for volunteers in the Spanish-American conflict, he enlisted at Lincoln, Nebr. May 19, 1898 in Co 1. 2nd. Nebr. Vol. and served until the end of the war.
He was married on Feb. 8, 1905, to Lucy M. Patrick of Blair, Nebr. They made their home in Omaha, and later at Blair where he was engaged in the automobile business.
Having no children of their own, they adopted a little girl, Margaret, and loved and reared her to womanhood. His wife passed away in 1931 and in 1932 he was married to his present wife, Mrs. Bertha Barlow of Decatur, Nebr. After their marriage they came to Iowa.
Mr. Jenkins had not been in active business for several years for he had very poor health and it was hoped that it might be improved by a change of location, so they moved from Greene, Iowa to Lenox in May.
He was a devout, earnest Christian, a member of the Presbyterian church at Greene, a patriotic, and loyal citizen, a loving husband and father. He was laid to rest at Blair, Nebr. services being conducted by the Rev. D. D. Kennedy at the Bendorf Funeral Home where many former friends were present to pay their respects to their old friend.
There is left to mourn his departure his devoted wife and faithful companion, his daughter, Margaret, now Mrs. Russell Harrison of Los Angeles, Calif., and his step-son, Charles T. Barlow, and their families. Lenox Time Table, Lenox, Iowa, Thursday, July 8, 1943 |
