Arthaud, F. L. –

Relatives here received word Monday of the death of F. L. Arthaud of Chillicothe, Mo.  The widow will be rememberd in Lenox as Dr. Frances Burgess, formerly Miss Fannie Rutledge. Burial will be at Bedford where Mr. Arthaud lived several years ago.

Beach, Haldeane –

Haldeane Breach, 31, the son of Mrs. And Mrs. C. S. Beach of Sharpsburg, is dead, the result of injuries he received Saturday when he was crushed in an elevator shaft at Cheyenne, Wyo.  Details of the mishap were not included in the telegram received by his parents here early this week and no word had been received up to noon Wednesday.  He is survived by his widow and three children.

Beach, Emery Haldene –

Emery Haldene Beach was born near Sharpsburg, Iowa on Dec. 2, 1911.  He was graduated from the Lenox High School in 1929 and later from Boyles College in Omaha.  Since completing his schooling, Hal was employed by the Burlington Transportation Company continuously, with the exception of one year, during which he was employed in El Reno, Okla. and seven months, during which he served his country in the U. S. Army.  He was honorably discharged

from the service in June 1943.

 

Haldene was united in marriage to Jeanette Brooks in April 1931.  To this union were born three children, Haldene Lee, 11, Ruth Joan, 9, and George Spencer, 5. 

 

Haldene died Tuesday, August 13, 1943, at the age of 31 years and 9 months.  His death resulted from an accident in Cheyenne, Wyo. On Saturday, August 28, 1943.   Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford S. Beach of Sharpsburg, Ia., his wife and three children, his grandmother, Mrs. Mary Ann Page of Lenox and five brothers and four sisters, as follows: Lieut. Robert P. Beach of the U.S. Marine Corp, Camp Lejeune, N. C.; Mrs. Marvin Bender, Van Nuys, Calif.; Walter G. Beach, Omaha, Nebr.; Lieut. Don C. Beach, of the U.S. Army Camp Barkeley, Texas, Sgt. Dale H. Beach of the U.S. Air Corps, somewhere in England, Mrs. Julian Walter, Lenox, Ia., and Bill Lee, Marjorie Ruth and Elizabeth at home.  In addition are a host of other relatives and numerous friends.

 

At the time of his death, Haldene was employed as General Supervisor of the Burlington Transportation office in Cheyenne, Wyo.

Cameron, Frank –

Funeral services for Frank Cameron, about 45, and a former Lenox resident, were held at Huron, S. D. Wednesday.  Mr. Cameron died August 20 [1943] at his home in Huron.  He was the brother-in-law of Mrs. Wayne Hale, and Mrs. Dick Hafnagel, both of whom accompanied by a brother, Geo. Page of Ottawa, Kans. attended the rites this week.

Campain, Phebe Jane Strong –

A stroke she suffered September 21 [1943], Tuesday proved fatal to Mrs. Guy Campain, about 65, a long-time resident of Sharpsburg.

 

Mrs. Campain failed to regain consciousness and died shortly before noon at her home in Sharpsburg.

 

Surviving are her husband and two sons, Wesley, now serving in the armed forces and Frank of Bedford.  Rites have been tentatively set for Friday from the Sharpsburg Presbyterian church.

Campain, Phebe Jane Strong –

Funeral services were Friday, October 1 [1943] from the Sharpsburg Presbyterian church for Mrs. Guy Campain, 65, a life long resident of Taylor county.

 

Mrs. Campain died September 28 ]1943], the result of a stroke she suffered a week before.

 

Surviving are her husband, two sons, John Westley of Council Bluffs and William Franklin of Bedford.  She also leaves a sister, Mrs. Lydia Filbert of Sharpsburg and four granddaughters.

 

The rites were conducted by the Rev. J. W. Chase.  Interment was in Lexington cemetery.

Campain, Phebe Jane –

Phebe Jane Campain, daughter of Van R. and Martha Strong was born October 1, 1878 near Sharpsburg, Iowa and passed away at her home in Sharpsburg on September 28, 1943 at the age of 64 years, 11 months and 28 days.

 

She was married December 21, 1904 to Guy W. Campain in the same residence which has been their home for so many years.  To this union two sons were born: John Westley of Council Bluffs, Ia. and William Franklin of Bedford, Ia.

 

She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, two sons and one sister, Lydia Filbert of Sharpsburg, and four grandchildren.

 

She joined the church in early childhood and was a member of the Presbyterian church of Sharpsburg at the time of her death.

 

Funeral services were held Friday, Oct 1, at the Presbyterian church, conducted by the Rev. J. W. Chase.  Burial was at Lexington.

Campbell, Ida –

Mrs. Ida Campbell, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. S. Stephenson, Saturday evening.  Mrs. Campbell was 83 years of age and had been in ill health for the past year or more.

 

Funeral services were conducted for her Monday afternoon at the Christian church by Rev. Ralph Yadon.  Interment was in Platteville cemetery.

Clark, Mrs. William –

Mrs. William Clark, a former resident of Blockton died August 5 [1943] in Grant City.  Funeral services were Saturday at Grant City, after which the body was brought to Blockton where interment was made in the Blockton cemetery.  Mrs. Clark was 81 years of age.

Dawson, Roy E. –

Roy E. Dawson, yard clerk for the Chicago Great Western railroad in Marshalltown, died at 6:10 p.m. Friday at the Deaconess hospital where he had been a patient since July 15 [1943].  He had been in poor health for the past month.

 

Mr. Dawson was born in Sheridan, Mo. on January 10, 1900.  His childhood was spent at Oelwein, Iowa, where he received his education.  He returned to Sheridan in 1930 and married Opal DeVault on February 15, 1932 at Grant City, Mo.

 

They operated a grocery store in Athlestan, Ia. for four and one half years and in 1941 he became an employee of the Chicago and Great Western railroad and worked at Athelstan until moving to Waterloo, Ia. in October 1942.

 

In December of the same year he moved to Marshalltown, he was affiliated with the St. Paul Episcopal church.

 

Funeral services were held at 4:30 Saturday afternoon at Estel Funeral Home in Marshalltown in charge of the Rev. Arthur Ecash, rector of St. Paul’s church.

 

The body was shipped to Blockton, Iowa to the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl DeVault, where the funeral was conducted by the Rev. R. C. Yades at 2:30 p.m. at the Christian Church.

 

Mr. Dawson is survived by his devoted wife, father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Golda Dawson of Sheridan, Mo.; one sister, Mrs. K. W. Robertson of Oelwein, Ia. and a host of relatives and friends.

Deming, Frederick J. –

Frederick J. Deming, a former Lenox resident, died last month at his home in Hartford, Conn., friends here have been advised.  As a small child Dr. Deming resided on the farm 5 miles southwest of Lenox on what is now known as the William Quinn farm.  He has since been a resident of Connecticut.  His death came suddenly following a heart attack.

Rites were at Rocky Hill, Conn.  He leaves his widow, Rachel Johnson Deming, two sisters, Mrs. Nellie Deming Warner and Mrs. Mabel Deming Hunt, both of Rocky Hill.

Gunderman, John –

Funeral services for John Gunderman, Lenox resident who died August 6 [1943] at his home, were held Monday from the Presbyterian Church United with the Rev. Earl Moneymaker in charge of the rites.

Surviving are his widow; four sons, John of McMinnville, Ore., Loren of  Villisca, Frank of Kansas City, Kans., and Harry of Atlantic; two daughters, Jennie Bigger of Lisbon, Ia. and Minnie Boom of Lucerne Valley, Calif.  He also leaves a sister, Minnie Heaton of Lenox, 25 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

 

A son, William, and a daughter, Dora, preceded him in death.  Masonic burial rites were held at the grave in Lenox cemetery where interment was made.

Gunderman, John –

John Gunderman, the son of Lorene and Dora Gunderman was born in Will County, Illinois,  January 4, 1861 and died at his home in Lenox, Iowa August 8, 1943 at the age of 82 years, seven months and two days.

 

At the age of 10 he came with his parents to Taylor county where he has resided continuously since.  On October 14, 1886 he was united in marriage to Annie Cox who survives and who so patiently cared for him in his illness.

 

He is also survived by four sons, John of McMinnville, Ore., Lorenz of Villisca, Ia., Frank of Kansas City, Kans., and Harry of Atlantic, Ia.; and by two daughters, Jennie Bigger of Lisbon, Ia., and Minnie Boom of Lucerne Valley, Calif.  He also leaves a sister, Minnie Heaton of Lenox, 24 grandchildren and one great grandchild.  On son, William, and a daughter, Dora, preceded him in death. 

 

He became a member of the Presbyterian church in 1902.  He also was a member of the Masonic Lodge for a number of years. 

 

Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church United at 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 9, 1943.  The Rev. Earl Moneymaker officiated.

Finn, Charles –

Word was received here by Mrs. John Slattery of the death of her brother, Charles Finn, a former Lenox resident.  Mr. Finn died Tuesday, August 31 [1943] at Inglewood, Calif.  Born and reared in Lenox, Mr. Finn left here many years ago.  He is survived by his widow, a daughter, two grandchildren and his sister, Mrs. Slattery.

Hough, George W. –

Funeral services were Friday afternoon from the Conway Methodist church for George W. Hough, 83, longtime resident, who died at a Creston hospital on June 30 [1943] following a two weeks illness.

 

Surviving is his widow, three children, Harry W. of Anatone, Wash., Carl B. of San Diego, Calif., and Mrs. Maude Gillette of Galesburg, Ill.  He also leaves eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren; a brother, John, of Windfield, Ia., and a half-sister, Mary Kingsley of Grandview, Wash.

Rev. Z. M. Bressler.  Interment was in Lexington cemetery.

Hough, George W. –

George W. Hough, son of Jeremiah and Elizabeth Hough, was born January 11, 1860 near Revana in Mercer county, Missouri.  At the age of 5 years he moved with his parents to Monroe county, Iowa.  For the past seventy years he has made his home in Taylor county.  Following his marriage for the next 22 years he devoted his energies to the raising and feeding of livestock and in 1905 he moved with his family to Conway.

 

He was married to Anna R. Boyd March 23, 1882 and to this union 3 children were born, Harry W. of Anatone, Wash., Carl B. on San Diego, Calif. and Mrs. Maude Gillett of Galesburg, Ill.  Last March Mr. and Mrs. Hough celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary.

 

Though drawing near to the western horizon of his earthly existence Mr. Hough continued active until suffering an affliction two months ago, from then on regardless of the care of loving hands and medical skill his health continued to fail and two weeks ago he was taken to the Great Community hospital in Creston where he answered the final summons into the great beyond June 30, 1943 having reached the age of 83 years, 5 months and 19 days.

 

He leaves to mourn his departure, his devoted wife and his three children before mentioned, 8 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, one brother, John of Windfield, Iowa and a half-sister, Mary Kingsley of Grandview, Wash., a number of nieces and nephews…[the remaining is impossible to read.]

Jeffers, James E. –

James E. Jeffers, 76, the father of Coy Jeffers of Lenox, died Sunday at his home in Clarinda.  He had been ill but a short time.  Surviving is his widow; six sons and two daughters.  Funeral services, from the Walker Mortuary in Clarinda were held Wednesday.

Jenkins, Frank –

Frank Jenkins was born February 10, 1877 near York, Neb. and passed away June 29, 1943 at Lenox, Iowa.

 

He was the youngest son of J. P. and Catherine Cotterall Jenkins and the last one a large family, his brothers and sisters having preceded him in death.  He made his home in Nebraska until 1938 when he came to Iowa.  He was a machinist by trade, receiving his training at Marion, Ohio, and held responsible positions among which was several years at the Union Pacific shops in Omaha.

 

When the call came for volunteers in the Spanish-American conflict, he enlisted at Lincoln, Nebr. May 19, 1898 in Co 1. 2nd. Nebr. Vol. and served until the end of the war.

 

He was married on Feb. 8, 1905, to Lucy M. Patrick of Blair, Nebr.  They made their home in Omaha, and later at Blair where he was engaged in the automobile business.

 

Having no children of their own, they adopted a little girl, Margaret, and loved and reared her to womanhood.  His wife passed away in 1931 and in 1932 he was married to his present wife, Mrs. Bertha Barlow of Decatur, Nebr.  After their marriage they came to Iowa.

 

Mr. Jenkins had not been in active business for several years for he had very poor health and it was hoped that it might be improved by a change of location, so they moved from Greene, Iowa to Lenox in May.

 

He was a devout, earnest Christian, a member of the Presbyterian church at Greene, a patriotic, and loyal citizen, a loving husband and father.  He was laid to rest at Blair, Nebr. services being conducted by the Rev. D. D. Kennedy at the Bendorf Funeral Home where many former friends were present to pay their respects to their old friend.

 

There is left to mourn his departure his devoted wife and faithful companion, his daughter, Margaret, now Mrs. Russell Harrison of

Los Angeles, Calif., and his step-son, Charles T. Barlow, and their families.

King, Irma –

Mrs. Irma King, of southeast of town [Blockton] passed away last week at a St. Joseph hospital.  Funeral services for her were held last Thursday at Honey Grove church, conducted by the Rev. L. B. Day, and interment at the same place.

Klarner, E. J. –

Requiem Mass, said by the Rev. Fr. G. G. Walker, was held Monday morning at nine o’clock at St. Patrick’s church for E. J. Klarner, 63.

 

Mr. Klarner, a long time resident of Lenox, died Friday at the home of his sister, Mrs. Otto Hurley.

 

Born in Austria, Mr. Klarner was reared and educated in Lenox where, later, he engaged in business.

Surviving is his sister, Mrs. Hurley, and one daughter, Mrs. Emiline Krucker, of Tucson, Ariz.

Klarner, Emil J. –

Emil J. Klarner was born November 21, 1874 in Austria and died Friday, July 2, 1943 at the home of his sister, Mrs. Otto Hurley in Lenox, Iowa at the age of 68 years, seven months and 11 days.

 

He had been ill but a short time.

 

Mr. Klarner came to the United States in 1882, making his home with his parents in Nebraska.  He later moved in Lenox  where he spent most of his life.

 

He was married to Cora Sparks, and to them were born a daughter, Emiline Krucker,  Mr. Klarner was engaged in various business enterprises during his life in Lenox, including the printing and publishing business and the sale of musical instruments and supplies.

 

Requiem Mass, said by the Rev. Fr. G. G. Walker, was at nine o’clock Monday morning, July 5, from St. Patrick’s church in Lenox.  Burial was in Catholic cemetery.

Maynes, Vern –

Vern Maynes, 48, the brother of Joe Maynes of Lenox, died Saturday at his home in Erickson, Nebraska.  Funeral services were Tuesday at Omaha.

 

Surviving is his widow; two sons, one of whom is in the armed forces; four brothers, three sisters, his mother, Mrs. Cora Maynes of Fremont, and a half-brother and a half-sister.

Pierce, Robert C. –

Mrs. W. C. Harover of Lenox received word late last week of the death of her cousin, Sgt. Robert C. Pierce of Council Bluffs, who died in a Japanese prison camp.

 

Sgt. Pierce, a captive of the monkey men of Nippon for the past 20 months, was captured when Corregidor fell.  Since that time he has been interned on the Philippine Islands as a prisoner of war.

Randolph, Wilson –

Funeral services for Wilson Randolph, Des Moines, a former Clearfield resident, were Friday from the Crew Mortuary in Clearfield.

 

The rites were conducted by the Rev. C. Rowe.  Interment was in the Clearfield cemetery.  Surviving are his widow, four daughters and several granddaughters.

Schafroth, Donavan Levi –

Short services, conducted by the Rev. E. F. Hagee, were held Tuesday morning from the home for the infant son of Paul W. and Mary Schafroth of northwest of Lenox.

The child, who was named Donavan Levi, lived but an hour following birth in a Creston hospital.

The parents and another child survive, as do the parental grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W. K. Crow and Mr. and Mrs. William Schafroth.

Stogdill, Morris Calvin –

Interment rites were held at Fairview cemetery here on Monday for Morris Calvin Stogdill, 55, of Gravity.  Mr. Stogdill died September 9 [1943] at Municipal Hospital in Clarinda, the results of a stroke he suffered the preceding Thursday.

 

Surviving are his widow, a son, Blaine of Des Moines, a daughter, Monna Dennis of Lenox; a son, Maynard in the Army Air Corps stationed at Santa Ana, Calif., four brothers, three sisters and a granddaughter.

Stogdill, Morris Calvin –

Morris Calvin Stogdill was born near Freetown, Indiana on June 6, 1883 and departed from this life September 9, 1943, at the Municipal hospital in Clarinda, the result of a stroke at the age of 55 years, 3 months and three days.

 

He was united in marriage to Florence Mabel Neely on March 13, 1911 and to this union were born four children.  His mother, father and infant child preceded him in death.

 

He spent the greater part of his working hours on the railroad, always succeeding in any undertaking he tried.  Those left to cherish his memories are his wife, Florence, a son, Blaine and wife of Des Moines, a daughter, Monna Dennis and husband of near Lenox, a son Maynord, in the Army Air Corps stationed at Santa Ana, Calif., a granddaughter, Sharene Dennis, four brothers, three sisters, other relatives and a world of friends.

Cheerful, thoughtful and patient, kind, loving and true, This world will always seem brighter because of him having passed through.

 

Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church at Gravity, at two o’clock Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. C. W. Proctor of Sharpsburg, assisted by Rev. Bressler of Gravity.  Interment was in the Fairview cemetery in Lenox.

 

The funeral music was by Mrs. A. J. Nelson and Miss Dorothy Lewis, with Mrs. Meredith Walker at the piano.  Pallbearers were Earl McMahill, Carl Sexton, Ross Reed, Wm. Finckbone, Eldon Valentine and Lewis Coy.

Sweigard, Walter A. –

Funeral services were held at the Sharpsburg Presbyterian church on Saturday afternoon for Walter A. Sweigard, 71, former Sharpsburg resident, who died September 7 [1943] at his home at New Raymer, Colo.

The body was returned to Sharpsburg after rites were held at New Raymer and the services locally were conducted by the Rev. J. W. Chase.  Surviving are his widow, his daughters, Mrs. C. F. Underwood of Sharpsburg, Dr. Lulu Sweigard of New York, Mrs. G. R. Jones of Almyra, Ark., Mrs. Earl Thompson of Provo, Utah, and his sons, Ross J. of New Raymer and Timothy N. Sweigard of Mt. Carmell, Ill.  He also leaves 11 grandsons, four granddaughters, and two great grandsons.  Interment was in the Conway cemetery.

Sewigard, Walter A. –

Walter A. Sewigard, eldest son of Lewis M. Sweigard and Sarah Montgomery, was born at Glenco, Nebraska, February 13, 1872.  He great to manhood in Dodge county, Nebr.  At the age of 19 years he went to Omaha, Nebr. where he began learning the trade that he followed the rest of his life.  In 1892 he came to Sharpsburg, Ia. where he was married to Amanda J. Nation, second daughter of James W. Nation and Sarah C. Barnes, on January 5, 1893.  To the union were born six children.

 

During the years which passed between 1893 and 1918 he was a prominent business man in Sharpsburg and was known over southwest Iowa for his mechanical ability.

 

His religion, his work, and the care of his family were his life.  In 1918 he moved with his wife and three youngest children to New Raymer, Colo.  Here with his sons he farmed, but was soon back to his old trade, which he followed till his health failed.  At the age of 63 he retired from active work, but was always ready to assist his sons and grandsons, who continued with his work.

 

With his devoted wife he lived in New Raymer until the day of his death, Sept. 7, 1943.  He leaves to mourn his passing his wife and children:  Mrs. C. F. Underwood, Sharpsburg; Dr. Lula E. Sweigard, New York City; Mrs. G. R. Jones, Almyra, Ark.; Ross J. Sweigard, New Raymer, Colo.; Mrs. Earl Thompson, Provo, Utah; and Timothy N. Sweigard, Mt. Carmell, Ill.  Eleven grandsons and four granddaughters and  two great grandsons.  Three granddaughters and one grandson preceded him in death.

 

He has two grandsons in the service of our country, Richard J. Underwood, U.S. Navy and Wilbur A. Sweigard, U.S. Army Air Crops.  His eight grandsons in New Raymer, Colo. were his constant companions in his later years and cared for him devotedly in his last hours.

 

During his life in Sharpsburg, Iowa, he was a faithful member of the Presbyterian church, later with his wife he transferred his membership to the Presbyterian church at Ft. Morgan, Colo.  He always prayed, “forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.”

 

Appropriate services were held  Thursday, Sept 9. And the body was shipped to Sharpsburg where funeral rites were conducted in the Presbyterian church by the minister, the Rev. J. W. Chase, on Saturday Sept. 11 at two o’clock p.m.  Burial was in the Conway cemetery.

Vanderpluym, Tunis A. –

Tunis A. Vanderpluym, 86, and a pioneer resident of the Kent vicinity, died Wednesday at Saint Joseph, Mo.

 

He was born in Holland on January 4, 1857, came to the United States in his youth and spent most of his list in Union county.  The last few years of his life were spent in St. Joseph where his wife now survives him.

 

Funeral services from the Catholic church in Creston were held Saturday.  Burial was in Graceland cemetery at Creston.

Wackernagel, Mox –

Mox Wackernagel, eldest son of Carl and Ida Wilhelmina Wackernagel, was born on a farm near Clearfield, Ia. October 17, 1874 and departed this life July 5, 1943 at University Hospital at the age of 68 years, eight months and 18 days.

 

At an early age he learned the hardships of pioneer life and with very little chance of education, made the best of life.  All his life was spent in farming and that one occupation, through his own effort, he mastered well.  For the past 35 years he has spent his time in and near the vicinity of Lenox.

 

His father, mother and two sisters, Ida May and Lillian preceded him in death.  Three sisters and two brothers survive: Mrs. Clara Silsbee of Atlanta, Ga. Mrs. Stella Taylor of Sharpsburg, Gus Wackernagel of Blockton and Rose and Frank Wackernagel of Clearfield.

Walter, Kathryn Ann –

Funeral services were at 2:30 Friday afternoon from the East Moline, Ill. hospital for Kathryn Ann Walter.  The two-day-old infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. K. Walter, died the same day at the hospital.  Surviving are her parents; her paternal grandmother, Mrs. J. W. Walter of Lenox, and her maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. O. E. Bricker who attended the services Friday.

Wood, Joseph –

Funeral services, from the Barber Funeral Home, were Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 for Joseph Wood, Lenox resident, who died at his home here Sunday.

 

The 73-year-old man is survived by his widow and by one son, Lloyd Wood, also of Lenox.  Rites were conducted by the Rev. Earl Moneymaker.  Interment was in the Lenox cemetery.

Wood, Joseph –

Joseph Wood, son of Joseph and Ellen Wood, was born in Cole Valley, Illinois, June 18, 1870 and passed away at his home in Lenox, Iowa September 19, 1943.

 

In his early childhood he moved with his parents to Albia, Iowa, later, when he was fifteen years of age, the family came to Lenox and settled on a farm in Grant Twp., Adams county.

In 1898 he became a member of the Wesley Methodist church near his home.

He was married November 22, 1898 to Maud Hamilton and to this union was born one child, Lloyd Wood, who now resides on the Wood farm.

 

After his marriage he united with his wife in the Presbyterian church in Lenox where he remained a faithful member.

 

He leaves to mourn his death, his wife, who has given him constant care since he underwent an operation six years ago from which he never fully recovered, his son, Lloyd and wife, two grandsons, William Irwin who is serving in the United States Navy in the Pacific; Reldon, who is a member of the Junior class of the Lenox High school; Lynda Lea his cherished granddaughter; Beverly Wood, wife of William Irwin, who is employed in the Naval Purchasing Department in New York City; one brother, John Wood of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and several nieces and nephews.
