Mrs Bertha Hollenback Armstrong, 78, passed away at her home in San Leandro, Cal., May 2. Mrs Armstrong is a cousin of Warren Eckels and visited here last September at the time of her 58th Lenox

High anniversary with the other members of her class.

Services were held Sunday at Varner - Crew Funeral Home

for Mrs Floretta Benadom, 88, who passed away at her home in

Clearfield Friday. Rev Howard Ball officiated.

Floretta Martin was born Sept 3, 1860 and spent most of her

life in Taylor County. She was united in marriage with Hila E.

Benadom and 3 children were born to this union. They are

Mrs Mable Parkins of Casa Grandle, Arizona, Mrs Lela Rusco

of Fresno, Calif, and Tom Benadom of Athelstan.

Burial was in Athlestan cemetery.

Bye, Elma Candace Steele -

Last rites for Mrs Bye, prominent Clearfield resident, were

held Saturday afternoon at the Christian Church.  Rev Ronald

Graham officiated.

Elma Candace, daughter of Mr and Mrs James Junes Steele, was

born January 15, 1883 near Clarinda. She attended a rural

school until 1899 when the family moved to Clearfield. She

graduated from Clearfield in1900. She taught in Taylor County and Clearfield public school for many years.

February 15, 1911 she was united in marriage to H Franklin

Bye at the home of her parents. They lived on a farm for 4 years and then moved to Clearfield.

Mrs Bye was assistant postmistress to her father, the late James Steele, who served as postmaster here for 10 years.  She was a faithful and active member of the Christian church and keenly interested in civic and community affairs.  She was a correspondent for several newspapers in this area.  She was in failing health for

the past three months and passed away at her home in Clearfield at the age of 74. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1950. She is survived by several nephews and nieces and cousins. Burial was in the Clearfield Cemetery.

Elmer Cleveland of Casper, Wyo., died Friday, May 17. He was an uncle of Mrs Clarence Johnson of Kent. Funeral and burial were at Casper.

Corby, Robert S. -

The Kent community was shocked to hear of the death of Robert S Corby, who took his life Tuesday afternoon by hanging. They had moved into their little home near his daughter, Mrs Joe Schabert about three months ago. They formerly lived at Springfield, Nebr and he operated the Corby Trucking Co. His body was taken to Springfield, Nebr., where the funeral was held Friday Surviving are three daughters, Mrs Joe Schobert of Kent, Mrs Arthur Adair of North Platte, Nebr., and Mrs Robert Sheple of Springfield, Nebr.,

and his widow. Sympathy is extended to the family.

Dunbar, Dick -

Dick Dunbar, 73, prominent insurance agent, died Saturday at 6:20 p. m., at his home. He had suffered a heart attack. Dick had been at his office Saturday as usual. His daughter, Mrs Maxine Schneider, and Mrs Dunbar had gone to the cemetery. When they returned

they found him dead in a chair, as though he had just sat down,

to rest.

Mr Dunbar was born in Lenox and had lived here all his life.

He was formerly in the clothing business, and had also worked

in the circulation department for this area for the Des Moines

Register and Tribune. He was a member of the Church of

Christ.

Funeral services were Tuesday at 2 p. an., at the Bender

Funeral Home, conducted by Donald Briley. Burial was in the

Lenox cemetery.

Survivors: his wife, Ethel: 4 sons, Donald, of Knoxville, George, of Underwood, Lyle, of Wheaton, Minn., Dick, Jr., of Kansas City, Mo.; 4 daughters, Mrs Maxine Schneider, of Blockton, Mrs Lenore Bailie of

New Market, Mrs Olive Button of Ottumwa, Mrs Phyllis Swanson

of Red Oak; 13 grandchildren and 1 great granddaughter; his mother, Mrs Olive Dunbar, 98, and 1 sister, Mrs Beulah Thomas, both of Milwaukee, Wisc.

Haynes, Clarence V.-

Clarence Haynes, 82, retired railroad man and dray line operator,

died Friday at 2 p m at the Dory Nursing Home in Creston after an extended Illness.

His wife died twelve years ago.  Survivors: five sons, Randall

of Lenox, Harry of Long Beach, California, Donald of Los Angeles,

California, Cleo of Griswold, Jack of Des Moines; two daughters, Mrs H G Cowman and Mrs H L Larimer both of Des Moines, three sisters, Mrs Coma Collins of Los Angeles, California, Mrs VI Griswold of Los Angeles, California, Mrs Bertha Benson of Lenox; one brother Bruce of Bellingham, Washington; 18 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

Services were Sunday afternoon at the Bender Funeral Home with the Rev Burton C Collier officiating. Burial was in the Lenox Cemetery.

Clarence V Haynes, son of John and Celia Haynes, was born at Hagerstown, Maryland, June 18, 1874 and passed away May 24, 1957 at the Dory Nursing home in Creston at the age of 82 years, 11 months and 6 days.

He came to Lenox at the age of 6 and outside of'14 months at Shambaugh, Iowa, lived his entire life at Lenox.

He was married to Bertha Haynes on July 26, 1896 in Lenox.

To this union 7 children were born: Cleo of Griswold, Harry and Donald of California, Thelma and Bernice of Des Moines, Jack of Des Moines and Randall of Lenox. Also surviving are 18 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren, three sisters, Mrs Bertha Benson of

Lenox, Coma Cullins and Mrs Viola Griswold of California, 1

brother Bruce of Bellingham, Wash., a number of nieces and

nephews.

His wife preceded him in death about 12 years ago.

Henderson, Clark J. -

Clark J. Henderson, 57, a former resident of Lenox, died at Clarinda Monday morning. Funeral services were Wednesday at the Walker funeral home in Clarinda. Burial was at College Springs.

Mr Henderson is survived by two brothers, W A Henderson of Creston and Earl Henderson of Lenox; and four sisters, Mrs

Emma Marley of Denver, Colo., Mrs Mary Newman of Imogene,

Mrs June Chitty of Newton, and Mrs Viola Short of Lenox. Several nieces and nephews, including a number in the Lenox vicinity also survive.

Mrs Mary (Jones) Hurd, 27, died Tuesday night in the hospital

at Lawton, Okla. She is survived by her husband, James; one daughter Coryl Ann, 4 years old; her mother, Mrs Bing Miller,

and one sister, Mrs Bill Eberle.

Hurd, Mary Margaret Jones -

Marv Margaret Jones Hurd was born to Charles W and Coryl Elizabeth Jones, March 28, 1930. She passed away at the

Northwestern Hospital in Lawton, Oklahoma on May 14, 1957

at the age of 27 years, 1 month, 17 days.

She spent her childhood on the family farm in the Sharpsburg,

Iowa community. There she attended grade school and graduated from the eighth grade. She united with the Presbyterian Church at Sharpsburg in 1949.

After grade school, she entered Conway high school for her

freshman year after which she attended Bedford high school and was graduated with the class of 1948. After high school she attended Business School in Omaha where she was graduated. She was engaged in secretarial work for a few years in Omaha.

On November 23, 1951, she was married to James H Hurd in a family ceremony at the Presbyterian Church in Sharpsburg, Iowa. To this union was born two children, Coryl Ann of the home, and Mary Kay who passed away in her infancy on November 23, 1956.

Mary Margaret was a faithful mother although she was frequently and seriously ill, she was very patient and uncomplaining always had a pleasant smile and was loving to those about her.

Besides her husband and daughter, she leaves to her passing,

her mother, one sister, Mrs Wm Eberle of Lenox, Iowa, her grandmother, Mrs Blanche Damewood of Bedford, Iowa, her great grandmother, Mrs Margaret Damewood of Tucson, Arizona, several relatives and a host of friends. She will be pleasantly remembered

and greatly missed by all who knew her.

Funeral services were held Saturday, 2 p. m. at Coen's home for Mrs Adelia Madden, 83, who died Wednesday, 1:30 p m in the Creston hospital.  Dr. A P Keast officiated.  Burial was in Grove Chapel Cemetery.  She was married to Leonard Madden Mar 12, 1896 in Creston who preceded her in death Nov. 22, 1941.  She had lived all her life on the farm southeast of Kent, until her husband’s death when she moved to Creston at 507 N Oak St in 1942. She is survived by ten children, Mrs Hobert Tnomas, Creston; Mrs Orville Porter, Kent; Mrs Rex Bakerink, Creston; Mrs Eldon Krueger, Creston; and six sons, Carl DeFord of Pine Valley, Calif.; George Madden of Holbrook, Nebr.; Leo Madden, Kent; Ray Madden, Kent; Ray Madden of Diagonal; and Floyd Madden of Des Moines; and 21 randchildren, 28 great grandchildren. Sympathy is extended to the families.

Mathias, Lillie Mercer -

Funeral services were Wednesday at 2 p m at the Bender Funeral Home for Mrs Lillie Mercer Mathias, 80, who died May 25 at Portland, Oregon. Rev Tom Hicks of the Prescott Methodist church conducted the service. Burial was in the Lenox cemetery.

Her husband Charles was buried in the Lenox cemetery this year. A daughter Mrs Charlotte Nelson accompanied the body here. Also surviving are three sons: Roland and Merlin of Topeka, Kans., Thurman of California and a number of grandchildren. Mrs Andrew Stoaks of Lenox is a niece of the deceased. Mrs Mathias was a former resident of the Mercer Center vicinity.

Mathias, Lillian Nora Mercer -

Lillian N. Mathias, daughter of James Thornton and Sarah Jane Mercer, was born in Mercer township, Adams County, la. June 8, 1874, and departed this life after an illness of 2 months in a hospital at Portland, Ore., May 25, 1957 at the age of 82 years and 11 months.

On Jan 28, 1903 she was united in marriage to Charles Mathias. To this union four children were born: 1 daughter, Charlotte Nelson of Portland; 3 sons: Thurman of Los Angeles; J Roland and Murlyn of Topeka, Kan; and two grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Her husband Charles preceded her in death Feb. 25, 1957.  Lillian Mathias was the last child of ten children born to James and Sarah Mercer to depart this life.  She lived in Adams county until 1917. The remainder of her life she lived in Baldwin and Iola, Kan.; Pueblo, Colo., and Portland, Ore.

She joined the Methodist church at an early age. She and her husband were very active and faithful members of the

church.  Lillian Mathias was a devoted mother and wife. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Services were held at the Bender Funeral Home in Lenox, la., May 29 at 2 p m with Rev Thomas W Hicks officiating.

Milliken, Clyde Horton –

Clyde Horton Milliken, second son of John and Matilda Milliken was born in Taylor county, Iowa on September 26, 1877 and passed away April 30, 1957 at the age of 79 years, 7 months and 4 days.  He was united in marriage to Miss Anna Wurster on March 11, 1916.  To this union was born three daughters, Mrs. Melvin (Bertha) Williams, Mrs. Lyle (Ruth) Raines, Mrs. Harold (Doris) Baxter.

Mr and Mrs Milliken made their home on a farm southwest of Lenox and lived there until a year and a half ago when they retired from the farm and moved to their home in Lenox.  Mr Milliken was a member of the Blue Grove Christian Church where he served as a deacon for many years.  He was preceded in death by his mother and father, his brother, Harry, and two half-brothers, John and Ray.  Besides his wife and 3 daughters, he leaves to mourn one half-sister Mrs. Lige Thomas of Corning, five grandchildren, two great grandchildren and a group of nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Moore, John Murray “Bud”

John Murray "Bud" Moore, 87, retired farmer, died at 8 p.m.

Saturday at his home at 400 West Temple street. He  was

born in Wenona, Ill., and had lived in the Lenox vicinity since

1896, retiring from the farm in 1934.

Obituary

John Murray Moore, better known as Bud Moore, was born

at Wenona, Ill., on June 25, 1870.  He was the oldest son of Edwin

Sprague and Mary Ellen Moore and died on July 6, 1957, at the

age of 87 years and 11 days. At the age of four years his family

moved to Iowa in a covered wagon, settling in a log cabin on the banks of the Nodaway river near Brooks.

When but a boy of fourteen he started working with his father who had purchased a livery barn at Gravity. They later lived in Hamburg and Shenandoah, then in Holdredge Nebr. Then on a farm east of Lenox on Platte River and Bud started on an eighty acre farm of his own.

After a few years there he moved to the farm southwest of Lenox on which he improved.  Mar 21, 1900, he was married to Carrie Elvira Anderson. They lived on the old home place until 1934 when they retired and moved to 400 West Temple in Lenox. Mrs Moore died in July of 1953.

To this union were born Clark Edwin, Sr., Raymond Theodore of Cedar Rapids, Vaughn Victor of Des Moines, Freda Margeritte Pierce of Vancouver, Wash.; Jack, of Hollywood, Calif., and Una Berdice,

who died when an infant. Besides the children there are fourteen grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren who mourn his death.

Mr. Moore was the last of his family.  Since the passing of his wife

in 1953, Bud tried to keep the home going but spent from April 1954 to June 1956 in St Louis with his son Clark.

He was a kind father and a good, neighbor, always worked hard, hardly ever taking off time to relax. He was a lover of good horses, believed in the Golden Rule and will be greatly missed by his family.

Funeral services were Monday, July 8 at Bender Funeral home,

the Rev. Burton Collier officiating. Burial was in the Lenox Cemetery.

Newby, Shelby –

Shelby Newby, 82, died Tuesday at 9:15 p.m. at the home of his son Emery in Bedford where he had been staying the past year.  His wife died three years ago, Mar 16.

Surviving are three sons, Emery, Clyde of Ottawa, Kans., and Fred of Nebraska City, Nebr., three daughters Mrs. James Matheny of Bedford, Mrs. Eldon Stice of Corning and Mrs Edith Sigman of Norwalk, Calif., also a number of grandchildren and great grandchild.

The body is at the Bender Funeral Home where services will be held Friday at 2:30 with burial in the Lenox Cemetery.

Paymal, Alta Paschel -

Mrs Alta Paymal, 78, former Lenox resident, died at her home in Los Angeles, Calif., Thursday. The body arrived in Creston Tuesday morning and was brought to the Bender Funeral Home. Graveside services were held at the Lenox cemetery Wednesday afternoon with the Rev Burton C Collier officiating.

Survivors: One brother, Clyde Paschel, of Los Angeles, Calif,;

a nephew, Eugene Paymal and a sister-in-law, Mrs Frank Paymal both of Lenox.

Mrs Lizzie Philpott died Sunday at Freewater, Ore.  Funeral services were in Oregon.  Mrs Philpott was the former Lizzie Brown and lived on a farm southwest of Lenox.

Porter, John Arthur –

John Porter, 73, well known Lenox business man died about 8 am Wednesday morning at the Dory Nursing Home at Creston.  Funeral services will be at 2 o clock Friday at the Church of Christ with burial in the Lenox cemetery. The body is at Bender Funeral Home.

Mr Porter is survived by his wife, Metta; a daughter, Mrs C B Peterson of Avoca; a son, Harley A of Tobole, Utah, and three

grandchildren.

He was born near Sudan, Kan., but came to Lenox when about

17 years of age. He had been in business on Main street for many years, first as a partner in the Killion and Porter men's clothing store. Later he and his wife owned and operated the bakery, then the hotel, and for several years they have owned the Porter Dry Goods and ladies ready to wear store.

Mr Porter has been a member of the Church of Christ for more than 50 years. He has served on both the church board and the school board. He is a past Worthy Patron of OES and a past Worshipful Master of the Masonic lodge.

His family were with him at the time of his death.

Porter, John Arthur –

John Arthur Porter, son of Harry and Florence Hole Porter was

born near Sedan, Kansas April 28. 1884. He passed away in Creston. Iowa May 22 1957 at the age of 73 years and 24 days.  He spent the early years of his life in Kansas and came to Lenox, Iowa, with his brothers, Ed and Roy, at the age of seventeen.

He married Metta M Killion Dec 16, 1910 at Osceola. Iowa.  To this union two children were born: Harley A and Julia Frances.

He had been in business on Main Street in Lenox many years, first in the  Killion and Porter Men's Clothing Store, then the Lenox Bakery. He and his wife owned and operated Hotel Lenox for two years. After selling the hotel they purchased the store known as Porter's

Dry Goods.

Mr Porter was a member of the Church of Christ here for fifty years. He had served as a member of the Official Board of the Church and also as a member of the local Board of Education. He was Past Worshipful Master of Tremont Lodge 343 A F & A M and Past

Worthy Patron of Salome Chapter 264, Order of Eastern Star.  He was a member of Rotary Club.

His survivors are his wife, Metta, a son Harley A. Porter of Tobole, Wash., a daughter, Julia F. Peterson, Avoca, Iowa, a brother Roy, Longview, Wash. a brother-in-law H C Killion, Lenox, a daughter-in-law Agnes Porter a son-in-law Charles B. Peterson and three grandchildren, Joe Porter, Mark and Jeffry Peterson.

Funeral services were held in the Lenox Church of Christ May 24, 1957 in charge of the Rev. Ray Nixon, assisted by the Rev. Burton Collier with burial in the Lenox Cemetery.  Graveside services were conducted by members of Tremont Lodge 343 A F & A M.

Ryan, Dennis B. -

Dennis B Ryan, son of Patrick and Margaret Ryan was born in

in Taylor county Aug 8, 1877 and departed this life at Rosary  hospital, Corning, Iowa on May 14 1957 at the age of 79 years, 9 months and 6 days.  February 11, 1903 he was united in marriage to Agnes Cotter, who survives him.

To this union seven children were born, Marjery of Des Moines, Lewis of Massena, Leo of Conway and Edward of Lenox.  He was preceded in death by Gene in 1914, Ethel in 1925 and Harold in 1950.  He is also survived by fourteen grandchildren and one great grandchild, four sisters and 2 brothers.

Mr Ryan was a farmer in Taylor and Adams county. He was a member of St Patrick's Catholic Church where the Requiem High Mass was sung by Father Bonaventure Bolda at 10 o'clock Thursday, May 16. The pall bearers were Michael Jennings, George Holbrook,

George Martin, Gene Mullin, Ivan Lucas and Francis Goldsmith.  Interment was in Calvary Cemetery.

Schweers, Celia A. -

Mrs Herman J Schweers of Arcadia, Iowa, died Monday night. Funeral services were this morning, Thursday, at St John's church at Arcadia and burial there.

Mrs Schweers was the mother of Art Schweers, northwest of

town. Survivors include her husband, eleven children and twenty-four grandchildren.

The deceased and her husband celebrated their 52ndwedding anniversary last Feb 7.

Shafer, Wilbur S. -

Wilbur S (Dad) Shafer, 82, retired owner of the Citizens Printing Co., of South Omaha, died Wednesday, Apr 3, in an Omaha hospital. Funeral services and burial were in Omaha.

Mr Shafer was a native of Lee County, Illinois, and lived in Lenox for several years. When only a youngster he worked in the printing shop in Lenox and later taught in the rural schools of Taylor county. He was a brother of the late Etta Shafer of Lenox.

He had owned the Omaha Concern for many years and was a founder of the South Omaha Merchants association.

Survivors include his widow, Louise; a son, Wilbur, Jr., Omaha;

daughters, Mrs Elmer Richter, Omaha and Mrs Robert Mentzer, Shreveport, La.; ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Mrs Will Preston received the sad news of the death of her brother Martin Sturm, age 88, of Jamestown, New York on July 3.  Martin grew up on a farm four miles west of Lenox, and will be remembered by a number of friends here. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife Adelia, one son Robert, and a daughter Mrs Marjorie Cummings, also his son-in-law Clinton Cummings, daughter-in-

Mrs Mary J Taylor, 90, died Thursday, July 4, 1957, at the Lenox Rest Home after an extended illness. She had lived most of her life in Des Moines.

Her husband, Hugh, preceded her in death 6 years ago. Funeral services were Saturday at 10:30 a. m., at the Bender Funeral Home conducted by the Rev James Eddy. Burial was in the Lenox cemetery.

Survivors: Four nieces, Mrs Helen Leckliter, of Lenox; Mrs Harold Davidson, of Clarinda; Mrs Leila Guidinger of Evanston, Ill. Mrs Delia Clayton, of Lenox and 1 nephew, Leland Graham, of Houston, Texas.

Obituary-Taylor

Mary Jane Hall, second daughter of Arron and Elizabeth Hall, was born near Zanesville, Ohio, on October 20, 1866 and died at the Lenox Rest Home on Thursday, July 4, 1957 at the age of 90 years, 8 months and 15 days.

With her parents she moved to Iowa in the winter of 1881. She was married to John Gordon in 1888. He died in 1889.

In 1900 she was married to Hugh Taylor who preceded her in death in 1949. They spent most of their married life in Des Moines. She was a member of the Cottage Grove Presbyterian Church and a faithful worker as long as her health permitted.

She leaves to mourn her passing her friends, four nieces and one nephew and their families as named above.

Mrs Sarah West, oldest resident of Adams county, died at her home in Corning May 10. She was 105 years old on Feb 11, 1957. Mrs West was a sister of Mrs. Lillie Menoher.

West, Sarah Ellen Monahan -

Sarah Ellen West, daughter of James and Sarah Monahan, was born Feb 11, 1852 in Washington County, Indiana, and passed away at her home in Corning, May 10, 1957 at the age of 105 years.

She came with her parents to Corning when 9 years old. The family later settled in Taylor county, where they lived for many years. .

On October 12, 1871, Sarah Ellen was united in marriage to

Robert Bruce West, and went to live at once on his farm in Taylor county which farm she still owned at the time of her death.

Mrs West was preceded in death by her husband who passed

away in 1910 , and by two daughters, Mrs Effie Huntington

and Mrs Grace McClure, and one son, O C West. Surviving are two sons, Edgar and Frank West of Corning, and three daughters, Mrs Pearl Cox of Omaha, Mrs Blanch Fudge of Brooks and Mrs. Hazel Wetzel, three sons-in-law and two daughters-in-law.  Also surviving are 21 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren and 14 great great grandchildren, three sisters, Mrs. May E. Mehoner of Pueblo, Colo., Mrs. Lillie Menoher and Mrs. Alta Nevins of Bedford, and one brother, R B Monahan of St. Joseph, Mo.

She was a wonderful mother, a fine Christian and was beloved by all her relatives and many friends.

Mrs Hilda Wurster, 61, died at 2 a. m. Tuesday at Des Moines.

She had been living with her daughter, Mrs Darlene Waggoner,

in Des Moines. Also surviving is another daughter, Donna, of Des Moines.

Funeral services will be at 2 p m Thursday, May 30, at the Bender Funeral home in Lenox with the Rev James Eddy Officiating.

Burial will be in the Lenox cemetery.

Mrs Wurster was the widow of J J Wurster who died Oct 11,

1956. They had lived on a farm east of Lenox before his death.

Wurster, Hilda Regina Marie Eberle -

Hilda Regina Marie Eberle, only daughter of Elizabeth and

Charles Eberle was born near Prescott, Iowa, January 23, 1896,

and passed away at the Methodist hospital in Des Moines May

28, 1957 at the age of 61 years 4 months and 5 days.

She attended Iowa State Teachers College and taught in rural schools for 7 years.  She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church of Lenox.  She was united in marriage to John J Wurster Jan 4, 1923. To this union were born two daughters. Darlene Waggoner

and Donna Wurster, both of Des Moines.

She spent her married life on a farm east of Lenox.  Shortly after her husband's death on Oct 11, 1956, she moved to 1708 E 22nd St., Des Moines where she and her youngest daughter made their home together.  She was a kind and loving mother.

She leaves to mourn her passing her two daughters, her son-in-law Lewis Waggoner, one brother Bryan Eberle of Lenox, and a host of relatives and friends. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and one brother Lee Eberle.

Services were held at the Bender Funeral home Thursday afternoon, conducted by Rev James Eddy. Burial was In the Lenox Cemetery.
