Armstrong, David Clark -

Clark Armstrong, 83, died Thursday at 11 p. m., at the Jefferson hospital in Jefferson.  He had made his home at Jefferson the past four years. He was born and grew up in Lenox and lived here until about 1938. He was a retired farmer. The body was brought to the

Bender Funeral Home where services were held Sunday at 2 p m., with the Rev Harold Butts officiating. Burial was in the Lenox cemetery.

OBITUARY

David Clark Armstrong, the second son of John and Mary Armstrong, was born in Vinton County, la., Sept. 16, 1870.  He departed this life Sept  9 1954 at the Jefferson Hospital.  He had been living in Jefferson with his cousin, Mary E Cook for the past four years. His parents moved to Kansas when he was one year old.

 

In 1880 his mother became ill and the family moved back to

Jefferson, la., where his mother died.  For a year he made his home with an aunt and uncle, a Methodist minister.  Later in 1883 he came with his father and three brothers to Lenox where he grew to manhood.

 

He was united in marriage to Kathryn Hoolbrook Feb 3 1895.  Two children were born to this union, a son Harold Armstrong  cf Columbia Falls, Mont., and a daughter Metta Hardisty of Villisca, la.

 

His father, mother and brother Charles preceded him  in death; also his wife, Katheryn Dec. 1, 1927. 

 

He leaves to mourn his death his two children, Harold and Metta, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, two brothers George of Chevely, Md. and Clarence of Lenox, 2 half brothers, John and Lloyd and a half sister, Mary of Salina, Kans.

Bassett, Jessie A. Kreiger -

Jessie A Bassett was born near Trenton, in Hitchcock County, Neb., Sept. 3, 1887, and passed away Aug. 21, 1954 at St. Joseph Hospital in Orange, Calif. She was 66 years, 11 months and 18 days old.

 

As a very small girl she moved from Nebraska to Iowa with her parents in the 1890's. After finishing the rural schools she

attended the Academy in Corning, la., and taught several years in the rural schools of Adams county.

 

She joined the Methodist church of Lenox, la., during the pastorate of Rev E A Fouch and never ceased to attend and minister to the needs of her church.  She helped organize the young ladies aid society and was their president for ten years. Her membership remained in the

Lenox church for over 50 years or until the family moved to

Livermore, Calif., where the membership was transferred in 1951. Here again she served as president of the Woman's Society of Christian Service.

 

She was married to Roy Bassett of Corning, la., in 1909 at the home of her parents, Mr and Mrs J L Kreiger of near Lenox. This union was blessed with one son, Harland L Bassett of Brea, Calif.

 

Besides her loving husband, and son Harland, she leaves to mourn her passing, the daughter-in-law and two precious grandchildren, Sandra Jean, 16 years old and Robert Harland, 7 years of age. Also one brother Harry Kreiger of Lenox, besides a host of relatives and friends.

Boone, Maury –

Maury Boone, a veteran of World War I, and a former resident of Lenox, died at Spencer, Iowa at his home early Monday.  Funeral services were Thursday at 3 p.m. at the Bender Funeral Home with the Rev. Willard Morris officiating.  Legion members from Parkinson Post No. 250 will be pall bearers.  Burial in Lenox Cemetery.

Boone, Maury –

Maury H Boone, son of W E Boone and Deborah McCarty Boone, was born in Kahoka, Mo. Jan 23, 1896, and departed from this life Sept 12, 1954, at the age of 58 years, 3 months and 12 days.

 

Mr Boone attended school at Ashton, and when he was a young man entered the 1st World War. He served 12 months, nine months of this time overseas service. He served with the 307th Trench Mortar Battery in the 82nd Division.

 

After returning home he started farming and was united in marriage with Edith Proud in 1919. To this union was born three sons and one daughter. One son passed away in infancy.

 

In 1940, Mr Boone became engaged in prison work at the State Penitentiary in Fort Madison, la., and managed prison camps for over ten years.

 

On Oct 2, 1943, at Plattsmouth, Neb., he was united in marriage to Miss Dorothy Perkins. He continued with his work until Aug. 28, 1950, at which time he became totally disabled.

 

He leaves to mourn, his widow, Mrs Dorothy Boone, and eight brothers and two sisters: Ira, Great Falls, Mont.; Gertrude (Mrs Ray McKinney) of Yucopia, Calif.; Stanley of Kahoka, Mo.; Sidney of Valley

Mills, Texas; Anna (Mrs Forth Smith) Maumee, Ohio; Glen A (Dick) of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Jewell of Toledo, Ohio; Theodore of Kansas City, Kansas; Forrest of Rising Star, Texas; Garland of Harve, Mont

Butler, Clarence Edwin –

Clarence E. Butler, 74, died at 4 p.m. Wednesday at his home here, following an extended illness.  He was a retired farmer.

 

Survivors: his widow Cara, 3 daughters, Mrs. Homer (Beatrice) Walter of Lenox, Mrs. Clarence (Veva) Cline of Van West, Ohio and Mrs. Orville (Doris) Williams of Council Bluffs, 3 grandchildren, Coleen Walter of Lenox and Diane and James Cline of Van Wert, Ohio, 2 brothers, Charles Butler and Harry Butler of Lenox, 6 sisters, Mrs. Charley Hewitt, Mrs. Harve Wilson, Mrs. Olive Hughes, Mrs. Floyd Dahlberg, Mrs. Ernest Peterson, all of Lenox and Mrs. Howard Jones of Oskaloosa.

 

He was preceded in death by a son, Paul.  The body is at the Bender Funeral Home in Lenox.  Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Butler, Clarence Edwin –

Clarence Edwin Butler, son of Annie and John C Butler, was born on a farm In Ringgold County, Iowa, Dec 14, 1879, and passed away after several years of illness at his home in Lenox, la., at 4 o'clock Oct 13, 1954, at the age of 74 years and 10 months.

 

He attended Prairie Star school and chose farming as his occupation.

His mother passed away in 1898, when he was 18.

 

On March 6, 1907, he was united in marriage with Cara Stoner and they began their married life on a farm near Tingley, la., later moving to farms near Lenox, where he lived until illness forced him to retire in 1948.

 

Mr Butler united with the Prairie Star church when quite young, later transferring his membership to the Lenox Presbyterian

church, and then to the United Presbyterian church.  He was ordained an elder at Prairie Star and served as an elder in the other churches.

 

Five children blessed his marriage: Beatrice Walter of Lenox;

Veva Cline of Van Wert, Ohio; Doris Williams of Council Bluffs, la.; and two sons, one who died at birth, and Paul, who was killed in Korea Jan 25, 1951.

 

Besides his mother and sons, his father and a half-brother preceded him in death. He leaves to mourn, his faithful and devoted wife; his three daughters, three sons-in-law, Homer Walter, Clarence Cline,

and Orville Williams; three grandchildren, of whom he was very proud, Coleen Walter, Diane and Jimmy Cline; six sisters Mrs Edith Hewitt, Mrs Mabel Wilson, Mrs Ollie Hughes, Mrs Carrie Dahlberg and Mrs Nellie Peterson, all of Lenox; and Mrs Jane Jones of Oskaloosa, Ia. two brothers, Charles and Harry of Lenox; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Cade, Jennie Durr –

Mrs. Jennie Cade, 82, died Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. at the Rosary hospital in Corning after an extended illness.  Survivors:  her husband, Irving H. of Lenox, 1 son, George of Conway, 1 daughter, Mrs. Ruth Wurster of Lenox and 3 grandchildren.  She and her husband celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary in March.

 

Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at the Bender Funeral Home.  Burial in Blue Grove Cemetery.  She was a member of the Presbyterian Church at Sharpsburg.  She was born in Greene County, Wisc. and had lived in Page county before moving to Taylor county.  The Cades had retired from farming and moved to Lenox several years ago.

Cade, Jennie Durr –

Jennie Durr was born to Geo. and Ellen Durr, July 27, 1872, in Green county, Wisc. When a small child her parents moved to Hansell, la., where she grew to young womanhood. They then moved to Shenandoah, living there about three years. They then moved to Taylor county on the farm known as the Phillip Beck farm.

 

March 29, 1899, she was married to Irving H Cade. To this union six children were born. Three died in infancy, one lived to be thirteen.

 

Mrs Cade was a member of the United Presbyterian church. Her main interest was in her home, her flowers and her family. Those left to mourn her passing are her husband, Irving H Cade; one son, George and his wife of Conway; one daughter, Mrs Ruth Wurster and husband, also three grandsons, two sisters, two brothers and a number of nieces and nephews.

Carruthers, Dessa Esther Robinson -

Dessa Esther Carruthers, the daughter of Squire Edward and

Agnes Robinson, was born Dec 13, 1877, near Conway, la., and

passed away Aug 22, 1954 at the Lenox Nursing Home at the age

of 66 years, 8 months, 9 days.

 

She grew to womanhood around Conway and her early life was spent in that community except short intervals during which her family resided in Oklahoma and New Mexico. She began her teaching career at the age of 16 in Oklahoma and later taught in Taylor County school for nine years.

 

On January 27, 1913, she was united in marriage to Francis S Carruthers. To this union were born three children, two sons,

Gerald and Kenneth, and a daughter, Mrs Margaret Williams.

All the 41 years of her married life she resided in Lenox.

 

She leaves to mourn her passing her husband, her children,

a daughter-in-law, Margery Carruthers, a son-in-law, Glen

Williams; 3 brothers, Elaine, Mark and Frank Robinson; 2

sisters, Mrs Eva Smith and Mrs Grace Thuem, and 4 grandchildren,

Nancy Lynn and Barbara Ann Carruthers and Janet Kaye and Randy Williams.

 

Her greatest interests in life were her devotion to her church,

her home and her grandchildren.  Funeral services were conducted

Wednesday morning in St. Patrick's church at 9 o'clock with Father Reisz officiating at High Requiem Mass. She was laid to rest in Fairview cemetery.

Coffman, Floyd -

Floyd Coffman, 46, farmer living 3 miles south of Lenox died early Friday at his home.  Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 27 at Bender Funeral Home with Rev. Harold Butts officiating.  Burial was in the Cromwell cemetery.

OBITUARY

Oliver Floyd Coffman, son of Harry C and Martha A Carson Coffman, was born Nov. 19 1907 at Greenfield, la. When a child he moved to Prescott with his parents, but spent most of his life south of Lenox where he passed away at his farm home Friday morning Sept. 24 at 1:30 a. m., from an attack of asthma from which he had been suffering for many years.

 

He was preceded in death his father, mother, brother Melvin and sister, Pearl Wolfe.

 

He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Jessie, one brother, A R Coffman of Bentonville, Ark., two sisters, Mrs Oma Fitzgerald,

of Clearfield, la., and Mrs Thelma Schmitt of Barstow, Calif.; also nephews and nieces and friends. Floyd was a good friend and neighbor.

Creveling, Sid –

Sid Creveling, 76, former resident of the Sharpsburg and Lenox vicinity, suffered a heart attack and died at his home in Clarinda Friday morning. He lived in this vicinity about ten years ago.

 

Survivors: his widow, Ethel; 3 daughters, Mrs E R Stapleton of

Omaha; Mrs Clara Cunningham of Syracuse, N. Y., Mrs Bernice Brown of Lenox; 3 sons, Alex and Sidney of Clarinda; Arthur

of Imperial, Neb.; 10 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren.

 

Funeral services were Monday at 2 p m at Walker Funeral Home, Clarinda. Graveside services at Conway.

Deaver, Florence Turner –

Mrs. Florence Deaver, 79, of Lenox died at 7 p.m. Friday at the Greater Community Hospital in Creston.  She had suffered a broken right leg Sept. 3 and had been in the hospital since then. 

 

Survivors: 3 sisters, Mrs Joe Cochran, Lenox; Mrs Mabel Green, Clearfield; Mrs Ethel Dunbar, Lenox; 1 brother, Frank Turner of Independence, Ore.; and a number of nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews.

 

Her husband preceded her in death. She was born near Lenox.

She had lived half of her life in Lenox. Shortly after her marriage she and her husband went to Oregon and they lived in the West for many years. She had lived in Clearfield a number of years and in Lenox the past two years.

 

Funeral rites were at the Crew Funeral Home in Clearfield Sunday at 2 p.m. Burial at Amity, Oregon.

DeHappert, Guy Lawrence -

Guy Lawrence De Happert, son of F L and Mary De Rappert, was born April 3, 1896 and passed away at the age of 58 years, 5 months, 18 days at the Municipal Hospital at Clarinda, la., after several years of illness.

 

When a small boy, he moved to near Conway with his parents, and has been a construction worker in Bedford, Red Oak and Clarinda. He made his home at the Clarinda Hotel for several years.

 

He was a kind, loving brother .and made many friends where ever

he went. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

 

He became a member of the Methodist church in Conway when a young man and held his faith there.

 

He was preceded in death by his father, mother and a brother.

Surviving relatives are sisters, Mrs Flossie Locke, Creston; Mrs Amanda Reeves, Smithville, Mo.; Mrs Ethel Barker, Lenox, la.; Mrs Elizabeth Brandt, West Newton, Pa.; and brother, Arthur, Griswold, la.; several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services were held from the Walker Funeral Home in Clarinda at 1:30 p. m. Tuesday, Sept 21, 1954 with the Rev Lester Greenwood in charge. Organ music by Miss Aletha Hutchings. Burial was in the Gravity, Ia. Cemetery.

Estel, Ollie –

Mrs. Ollie Estel, 81, died Sunday at her home in Falls City, Neb.  She was a former resident of Lenox.

 

Survivors: Her husband, William, 1 daughter, Mrs. Martha Hofer of Falls City, 2 sisters, Mrs. Clara Cresswell of Creston, Mrs. Laura McClintock of Denver, Colo and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Edna Madden of Lenox.

 

Mrs. Estel left Lenox 41 years ago.  Funeral services were from the Bender Funeral Home Wed. at 2 p.m. with burial in Lenox Cemetery.  Rev. Harold Butts officiated at the funeral services.

Hayes, Hannah Lillian Davenport -

Hannah Lillian, daughter of N S and Mary Ann Bauman Davenport

was born Feb 7, 1884 on a farm in Lincoln Twp., Ringgold County, la., and passed away at the age of 70 years, 7 months and 27 days at the Mt Ayr Hospital Oct 4, 1954, having been a patient there the past five weeks.

 

She grew to womanhood at the place of her birth and attended the Rural School nearby. In 1806 she was married to William Hayes at Bedford, la. To this onion one son, Ulen was born.

 

Mrs Hayes was a faithful attendant at the Fairview Methodist church for many years.  A few years ago she moved to Clearfield where she has since lived. Her many kind deeds will long be remembered by her friends and neighbors.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers Roy, John,

Oscar and Pete L Davenport and two sisters. Hattie Condra and Eva Wolfe.

 

Surviving are her son, Ulen and wife Elma of Clearfield and two granddaughters, Ruth and Judy Hayes to whom she was devoted. A number of nephews and nieces, other relatives and many friends will cherish her memory.

 

Funeral services were held at 2 p m , Oct 6 at the Clearfield Methodist church, Rev H Ball officiating. Interment in Rising Sun cemetery. Casket bearers were Lyle, Lester and Paul Whitmore, W Rong, Leo Wilson and Paul Brown.

Hickey, Kevin Charles -

Graveside services were held at the Lenox cemetery at 2 p. m.,

Sunday for Kevin Charles Hickey, infant son of Mr and Mrs

Charles Hickey of Wahoo, Neb.  Rev. Donald Watkins of the

Sharpsburg Presbyterian church conducted the services. Kevin Charles was born Sept 23 at an Omaha Hospital and died Saturday,

Sept. 25. The mother will be remembered by Lenox friends as the former Kathryn Hegwood, a resident of the Sharpsburg vicinity. She is a niece of Mr and Mrs Al Hegwood, a cousin of Leland Hegwood, Mrs Jesse Barker and Mrs Dwight Wilcox, all of Lenox. Charles Hickey of Wahoo and Russell Hegwood of Omaha accompanied the

body to Lenox. Burial was in the Lenox Cemetery.

Jones, Andrew -

Andrew Jones was born near Norwich, la., June 22, 1874, but spent his first years near Bingham, la., living there until 1897.  When a small boy he spent 3 or 4 years in Texas.  He was one of nine children of Mr and Mrs Henry Jones.

 

On Oct 20, 1897 he was united in marriage to Annie Preston

They were parents of 7 children 4 sons and 3 daughters.

They lived on a farm until 1940 when they moved to Diagonal.

In 1947 they moved to the present home in Conway.

 

Mr Jones was a good neighbor, and was honest in all his

dealings. He was a kind father and will be greatly missed by

his family. He was a member of the Conway Methodist church.

 

Those left to mourn his passing are, his companion of more

than 56 years; six children: Forrest of Mt Ayr; Mrs Hazel Creveiling of Clarinda; Mrs Vivian  Baker of Fort Collins, Colo.; George of Lenox; Alva of Lenox; and Horace of Clarinda; 10 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren 4 nephews, 6 nieces.  One daughter, Faye, passed away in 1919.

 

Mr Jones died Sept. 18 at the age of 80 years, 2 months, 25 days.

Funeral services were conducted in the Conway Methodist

Church by the pastor, Rev R V Felt, Tuesday, Sept 21. Burial was in the Conway Cemetery.

Lindell, Robert -

Robert Lindell, 26, was fatally injured Tuesday afternoon while

helping his father, Russell Lindell, with corn grinding at their farm 4 miles northwest of town. Robert was taken to Rosary Hospital, Corning, shortly after 4:15 when the accident occurred, and passed away about 7 pm.

 

The body is at Bender Funeral home.  Services will be at Lenox Methodist Church Friday at 1 pm Rev. H. M. Butts, officiating.  Also a service at Fremont Lutheran Church near Red Oak at 3 p.m. by Rev. Raymond Lingwall.  Burial at Mt. Hope Cemetery, near Red Oak.

 

Bob, as he was known, seemed to catch his glove in the belt of the corn grinder. He suffered a crushed right arm and a broken left leg. Death was caused by a brain injury due to a concussion suffered when he was thrown against the machinery.

 

Survivors in the family are the parents, Mr and Mrs Russell Lindell; one brother Keith, and a sister Donna, both at home; two sisters away, Ellen Lindell and Mrs Barnard Parker; also grandparents, Mr and Mrs Ed Wallin,  Essex.

Maharry, Mary Pearle Hewitt –

Mrs. Cecil Maharry passed away Friday after a long illness.  Funeral services were Sunday Nov. 7, at the Clearfield Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. Howard Ball.  Interment was in Lenox cemetery.

 

Mary Pearle, daughter of Ann Jane and James S. Hewitt was born near Lenox in Adams County, Iowa June 26, 1892.  She passed away at Rosary Hospital, Corning, Ia. Nov. 5, 1954 at the age of 62 years, 4 months and 9 days.  She grew to womanhood in this community and was a member of Prairie Star Presbyterian Church near Kent.

 

On March 28, 1917, she was united in marriage to Cecil M. Maharry and moved to Taylor Count near Clearfield which was her home for the rest of her life.  Her church affiliation was transferred to Calvary Methodist and later to Clearfield Methodist Church.   She was the mother of three sons.

 

Preceding her in death were her father and mother, and 3 half sisters, Emma Oshel, Lillie Madison and Addie Nisely.

 

Surviving are her husband, Cecil Maharry, her three sons, Gerald of Clearfield, Leland of Lenox and James of Los Angeles, and three daughters-in-law, Hazel, Lucille and Rita of whom she was very fond, two half brothers, John Thompson and Charley Hewitt, both of Lenox, one half sister, Lizzie Stewart of Humansville, Mo., 9 grandchildren and many relatives and friends.

 

She enjoyed her church and social activities as long as her health permitted.

O’Dell, Walter -

Walter O'Dell of Peoria, Ill., passed away Aug 23. Funeral services and burial were at Peoria. Mr O'Dell formerly lived in Lenox and was manager of the Farmers Store here. He was a brother-in-law of Tony Schmitt

O’Riley, Cora Pauline Schaffer –

Funeral services for Mrs. Wilfred O’Riley, 64, were held Saturday Oct. 9 at the Wray Memorial Methodist Church at Hopkins, Mo.  Mrs. O’Riley died at her home at the south edge of Hopkins Wednesday Oct. 6 after a lingering illness.  She was born in Prescott, Ia. and had been a resident of Hopkins 25 years.

 

The Rev. Earl C. Griffith conducted the services.

 

Burial was in the Hopkins Cemetery.  The casket bearers were Harold Black, Glen Goldner, Melvin Wurster, Albert Wurster, Harvey Wurster and Walter Schaffer.

 

Cora Pauline O’Riley, daughter of Jacob and Mary Schaffer was born July 30, 1890 near Prescott, Ia. and departed her life at her home at Hopkins, Mo. Wednesday Oct. 6, 1954 at the age of 64 years.

 

She was united in marriage to Wilfred O’Riley May 4, 1910.  To this union four children were born, Leland and Virgil O’Riley of Hopkins, Earl O’Riley of Willamina, Ore. and Mrs. Harley (Merle) Whaley of Hopkins.

 

She united with the church as a girl and later when she moved to Missouri, she transferred by letter to the Hopkins Methodist church.

 

Although she suffered from arthritis for ten years, the last seven months confined to her bed, her faith in God remained steadfast.

 

She is survived by her husband, her four children, ten grandchildren, one sister Mrs. Rose Wurster of Lenox, Ia.; two brothers, Charley Schaffer of Prescott and Elmer Schaffer of Kent, Ia.  She was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Mary Louise Whaley and two sisters, Mrs. Lulu Wurster and Mrs. Clara Randecker.

Orr, Mary Emma Pease –

Mrs. Mary Orr, 80, died at 3 p.m. Saturday.  She had been living at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Ward since returning Aug. 9 from the University Hospital at Iowa City.  Death was due to an acute heart attack.  She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church at Lenox and also a member of the Parkinson Unit No. 250 of the American Legion Auxiliary of Lenox.

 

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Bender Funeral Home with the Rev. W. M. Morris officiating, assisted by Rev. H. M. Butts.  Burial was in Lenox Cemetery.

 

Mary Emma Pease, daughter of James and Sarah Pease was born June 28, 1874 near Newburn, Warren County, Iowa and died in Lenox, Ia. Saturday Aug. 28 at the age of 80 years and 2 months.

 

She spent most of her early life in Lucas, Ia. When she was a sophomore in school her parents moved to Lenox.  She finished her schooling here and taught rural schools in this community.

 

She was united in marriage to William Edgar Orr July 4, 1895.

To this union were born ten children, 7 boys and 3 girls. She

was preceded in death by her husband and 5 children.

Pennebaker, Lila Isabelle Souder –

Mrs Lila Isabelle Pennebaker was born in Peoria County, Ill. and passed away at her home in Lenox, Ia., Sept. 19, 1954 at the age of 88 years, 11 months and 20 days.

 

She was united in marriage to Doris Samuel Pennebaker Jan. 16, 1889 at Peoria, Ill.  To this union 8 children were born: A. L. of Clearfield, Harry of Sharpsburg, Charles of Ottawa, Ill., John (deceased), Dr. James C. of Corning, Dr. Evert R. of Lenox, Ray of Kansas and Mrs. Faye Heller of Gravity.

 

She and her husband moved to a farm in Page County, Ia. in 1894 and from there to a farm near Sharpsburg in Taylor County in 1899

where they resided until they moved to their home in November 1953.

 

She united with the church in early girlhood and at the time of her death was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Sharpsburg.

 

She is survived by her husband, 7 children, 5 daughters-in-law, 1 son-in-law, 14 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, 1 brother, Frank Souder of Bedford, 1 sister Mrs. Emma Deisinger of Monmouth, Ill. and numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

 

The funeral for Mrs. Pennebaker was held Tuesday afternoon Sept. 21 at the Presbyterian Church in Sharpsburg with the Rev. Donald Watkins officiating.  Burial was in Conway cemetery.

 Reynolds, Clyde Myrl –

Clyde Myrl Reynolds was born near Leroy, McLean Co., Ill. Sept. 5, 1886 and departed this life Sept. 5, 1954 at the age of 68 years.  He moved to Iowa with his parents in March 1895, who preceded him in death in 1944.

 

He grew to manhood on a farm 4 miles northeast of Lenox, Ia.  In the spring of 1907 he went to North Dakota where he mastered the blacksmith trade.  In 1918 he was inducted into the U S Army with the Motor Transport Corps, 844th as tradesman at Camp Custer, Battle Creek, Mich.

 

On returning from the army he went into business for himself locating at Monsango, N. D.  In 1822 he had the misfortune to lose his shop by fire, losing everything.  He then came to Villisca, Ia. Jan. 1, 1923 working for the J. V Wynn Auto Repair Service.

 

On March 20, 1925 he was married to Mary L. Honeywell of Villisca, moving to Bellvue, Neb. in 1927.  Returning to Villisca in 1929 where he served the Villisca community as a blacksmith, retiring after 14 years.

 

Surviving his departure are his wife, Mary, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Honeywell of Emerson, Ia., Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hinkie and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Webster and eight grandchildren of Villisca, one brother, Charles Bivens and wife of Omaha and a host of relatives and friends.

 

Services were held Tuesday Sept. 7, 1954 at the [?] Funeral Home conducted by the American Legion, with Rev. Bodwell presiding.  Interment was made at the Villisca Cemetery.

Rissinger, Claude W. -

Friends here received word Wednesday of the death of Rev Claude W Risinger, 65, who passed away Tuesday evening at his home in Bondurant, la., after an extended illness. Rev Rissinger was pastor of the Lenox Church of Christ two years and since has served one year at Bondurant.

 

The body will remain at Arnold Park Funeral Home in Des Moines until Friday.  Funeral services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Christian Church in Bondurant.  Interment will be in the Milo, Ia. Cemetery.

 

Rev. Rissinger was a graduate of Drake University.  He had served as a guard and prison chaplain at the Iowa penitentiary, Ft. Madison and preached in churches in Missouri, Illinois and Iowa.  He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and a Shriner.

 

Survivors include his widow Blanche, one son, Max, and two

grandchildren of Portland, Ore

Skinner, Ernest -

Ernest, son of Ayers and Sarah (Evans) Skinner was born near Maloy, Ia. Nov 8, 1879 and passed away Oct 29, 1954 at his

home m East Clearfield at the age of 74 years, 11 months and

21 days. He grew to manhood on the farm, then moved to Clearfield

where he became a carpenter.

On Nov. 9, 1904 he was united in marriage to Miss Etta Grant and they established their home in Clearfield. To this union were born two daughters. Helda E of Galesburg, ID., and Margaret E Kmiotek of Spooner. Wisc., and one son, Donald, at home.

 

Mr Skinner was a member of the Christian church and the M W A lodge. He was a good citizen and friend.

 

Surviving are his wife. Etta, the two daughters and son: one

son-in-law, Stanley Kmiotek and a granddaughter, Stephanie.

a sister, Mrs Mollie Miller of Mt Ayr; other relatives and many friends.

 

Funeral services from Crew Funeral Home, Rev Ronald Graham officiating, Sunday at 2:30. Interment in Clearfield cemetery.

Sullivan, Maggie Lynch -

Maggie Lynch Sullivan, the daughter of James and Eleanor Lynch was born March 27, 1874 and passed away at the home of her daughter, Helen Eberle Sept 13, 1954 at the age of 80 years, 5 months and 16 days.

 

She was born in Jackson County and moved to Jasper township

at the age of 9.  Feb. 18, 1901, she was united in marriage to Joseph R Sullivan and moved to a farm in Mercer township where she

spent most of her life. Her husband preceded her in death July 13, 1913 and an infant daughter, Mary.

 

She is survived by four children, Charles and Raymond of Corning; Mrs Helen Eberle of Lenox; and Mark of Des Moines; five grandchildren, two sisters and a brother, Mrs Ella Colpetzer

of Kansas City, Mo., Mrs R D Bentley of Creston and Joe Lynch of Corning.

 

Funeral services were held at St Patricks Catholic Church in

Corning Wednesday, Sept 15, at 9:30 a. m. conducted by the Rev

Fr M J Powers. Interment was in Calvary cemetery. Pall bearers

were Chas Maloney, Mike Jennings, Bill Sullivan, Bryan Eberle, Bernard Sullivan and Tom Scanlan.
