Miss Hattie Henderson received word that a cousin, Mrs Jennie

Park Anderson of Santa Ana, Calif., passed away Jan 16 of a heart attack. She formerly lived here and at one time taught music. She leaves 2 daughters, 2 brothers and 2 sisters.

Andrews, Ella Gall -

Funeral services for Mrs Andrews, 82, were held at the [Clearfield] Methodist Church Monday afternoon. Officiating ministers were Rev Darr of Des Moines and Rev H. Ball.

The daughter of Mr and Mrs Rufus Gall, Ella was born Dec 15, 1875 in Ohio and passed away at the home of her daughter Mrs Marjorie Shaffer in Des Moines.

Following her marriage to Lewis Andrews in 1907 they moved to Clearfield where they operated the Clearfield Enterprise until 1948 when he retired due to ill health. To this union were born twin daughters, Marjorie and Margaret.

Mrs Andrews became a member of the Methodist Church in 1907 and was active in church affairs until recently. She was also a member of R. N. A.

Surviving are her daughters Mrs Marjorie Shaffer and Mrs Margaret Hurley and sons-in-law of Des Moines, 2 grandchildren, Marcella Kerns and Karl Shoenhair and 5 great grandchildren. Her husband

passed away in 1949. Eight brothers and 2 sisters preceded her in death.

Burial was in the Clearfield Cemetery.

Bush, Henry Monard -

H. M. Bush, 67, died Saturday morning at the Greater Community

hospital in Creston after an extended illness. He was born and lived all his life on the same farm northeast of Lenox.  He was a member of the Stringtown church and had served a number of years on the official board of the church.

Surviving are his wife, Doris, 2 daughters, Mrs Gladys Thompson, of Nevada, Mrs Norma Paymal, of Lenox 2 sons, Orvin, of Lenox, Edwin, of Minneapolis, Minn.; and 7 grandchildren.

Funeral services were Monday afternoon at the Stringtown church with the Rev John Shidler officiating. Burial was in Stringtown Cemetery.

Henry Monard Bush, son of Lemuel and Leona Bush, was born May 30, 1890 and passed away at the Creston Hospital December 28, 1957 at the age of 67 years, 6 months and 28 days.

He was married February 23, 1911 to Doris Purdum who survives.  Also surviving are four children, Norma, Mrs. Gene Paymal of Lenox, Gladys, Mrs C P Thompson of Roland, Orvin of Lenox and Edwin of Minneapolis, two daughters-in-law, 2 sons-in-law and 7 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister, Blanche and brother Roy.

Monard was born and lived on a farm in Grant Township which was homesteaded by his father.  He was a long time member of the Stringtown Federated Community Church and served as a board member for many years.  Being interested in community affairs, he was a Charter member of the Adams County R E A and for over 25 years has been treasurer of the Grant Township School Board.

Funeral services were Dec. 30 at Stringtown, the Rev. John Shidler, officiating.

Casket bearers were Ed Metz, John Craft, Harry Reese, Fred Shepherd, Fred Stillinger and Harold Smith.

Clute, Clara Eltha Greenlee -

Mrs Clara Clute, 81, died at her home Wednesday [Dec. 4] afternoon.

She had been ill for a short time with the flu and a heart condition. Funeral services were Friday at the United Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev James Eddy. Burial was at Bedford.

Obituary

Clara Eltha Clute, daughter of Harley U. and Mary Ann Greenlee was born at Bedford on January 31, 1876 and passed away at her home in Lenox at the age of 81 years, 9 months and 27 days.

Her parents were long time residents of Bedford. On Christmas

Day, 1895, Clara was married to Fred M. Clute, who preceded

her in death Jan 1, 1957.  To this union were born four daughters and one son. One of the daughters, Maxine, died in infancy.

The first years of their married life were spent in Bedford. In 1914 they moved to Clearfield making their home there until 1932, when they moved to Lenox. On December 25, 1956 they celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary.

Mrs Clute was a member of Lenox United Presbyterian Church, a member of Eastern Star, Royal Neighbors and the Harmony Reading Circle.

She is survived by her four children, Mrs Helen Ethington of Ames; Mrs Vesta Bailey of Diagonal; Mrs Pauline Williams of Detroit, Mich.; and George E Clute of Monroe, Mich.; nine grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren, three sisters, Mrs Hattie Nash of Sheridan, Mo., Mrs Carrie Martin of Cody, Wyo. and Mrs Huldah Dietzel of St. Joseph, Mo.

She will be greatly missed by the family, relatives and her many friends.

Pall bearers at the funeral were grandsons of Mrs. Clute, Dean Ethington, Claire Ethington, Dale Ethington, Loren Bailey, Clare Russell and Gerald Cacy.

Connor, M S “Mike” –

M S (Mike) Connor died about 10 p m at the hotel Tuesday [Dec. 3] evening.  Services will be from the Bender Funeral Home Saturday morning at 10 o'clock, the Rev Fr Bonaventure of Corning officiating. Burial will be in St Patrick's cemetery.

Mr Connor was a bachelor and the last of his immediate family, leaving only nieces and nephews as heirs. He had lived on a farm east of town but had leased his land and recently came to the hotel to stay. Friends estimate his age at 88 years. He was a former director of a Lenox bank.

Dunbar, Michael -

Michael Dunbar, 22, of Wheaton, Minn., son of Lyle Dunbar, was accidentally killed in a hunting accident New Years Day. He was with two brothers-in-law, 14 and 16 years old. The younger boy mistakenly shot at Michael, who was able to walk to the car but

died before arrival at the hospital.

The deceased was a grandson of Mrs Dick Dunbar. His wife and an eight month old daughter survive. Funeral services were Saturday at Wheaton.

Godden, Will –

Will Godden, 78, died Tuesday [Dec. 3] afternoon in the Lutheran Hospital at Moline, Ill.  His home was in Rock Island, Ill.  He had suffered a stroke Nov 29.

The body is being brought to the Bender Funeral Home where

services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the Rev

Robert Duckett officiating. Burial will be in the Lenox cemetery.

Mr Godden was a farmer in this community and well known cattle buyer. He moved to Rock Island in 1947.

Survivors include his widow, Cora; a son Theron of Chicago; one daughter Verlee Greenhagen of Rock Island, two brothers and two sisters. Mrs Velma Godden of Lenox is a daughter-in-law and Mrs A. L. Hegwood is a sister-in-law.

One son, Stanley and one grandson preceded him In death.

Hill, Julia -

Mr and Mrs Roy Leedom were called to Lancaster, Mo., Monday

by the serious illness of his aunt, Mrs Julia Hill, 80. She passed away Monday [Dec. 2] noon. Her sister Mrs Jane Marshall lived in Lenox for years but is now living in Kelseyville. Calif. Mrs Marshall was unable to come as she was in the hospital with a serious heart attack.

Mr and Mrs Leedom returned home Friday.

Hogan, Ethel Edwards –

Mrs. Tom Hogan of Corning was buried Monday Jan 27 at Calvary Cemetery at Corning.  A Solemn Requiem High Mass was conducted by her nephew Rev Paul Hogan C ss R at St. Patrick’s Church in Corning at 10 o’clock.

Mrs. Hogan was 69 years, 3 months and 19 days old at the time of her death.  Survivors are her husband, Tom, her mother, Mrs Abe Edwards of Corning and the following children: Fr Francis Hogan, S.

J, Honduras, Central America; Mabel Schweers of Lenox; Edna

DuBois, San Diego, Calif., Donald Hogan of Corning; Iva and Mary Jane Bick of Weisbaden, Germany. There are 14 grandchildren and 3 step grandchildren.

Her brother and sisters are Elizabeth Edwards, deceased; Bertha Cotter of Corning, George Edwards of Creston, Mildred Ware of Milwaukee and Mabel Gaskill of Corning.

Pall bearers at the funeral were Lige Thomas, John Curry, Jr., John, Kane, James Tracy, Jim Kenedy Sr., and Jim Keefe.

Hoops, Ernest -

Ernest Hoops, 80, died at his home in Kent, Tuesday, Oct 29

after a long illness. Funeral services were held Friday at Creston and burial was in the Fairview cemetery at Bedford.  His wife preceded him in death Jan 20, 1957. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs Marion Wilson of Gravity, Mrs Frank King of Bedford and Mrs Herman Peterson of Corning, and two sons Dale of Peru, and Merle of Webster City, and 18 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren

and four sisters. He lived in Kent the past nine years.

King, Laura Caroline Umberger -

Funeral services and burial for Mrs Laura King, 83, were held at Des Moines. She lived in Lenox until two years ago. The obituary follows:

Laura Caroline, daughter of Franklin and Mary Umberger, was born May 10, 1874, and passed away Dec 2, 1957. She was born and spent the early years of her life in Wytheville, Va. She was third in a family

of thirteen children, leaving only one surviving sister.

On September 10, 1896 Laura was united in marriage to Marion

Clark King. A short time later the family migrated to Missouri where a daughter, Cleo, and a son, Byrum, were born. A few years passed and the family settled in Colorado, where they were very active in

the work of the Church of God.

About 50 years ago, Mr and Mrs King came to Iowa, making their home in Lenox. There they established a very simple home, surrounded by many friends and neighbors who will always remember them by the many monuments erected in that vicinity through Mr King's many years of masonry work.

Mr King, preceded his wife in death in September 1949. Laura

kept her home in Lenox until two years ago, when she moved

to Des Moines to be near her family. In October 1956, she fell

and broke her hip. Since then she had enjoyed only fair health, making her home at the Rest View Nursing Home in Des Moines. She was able to visit her family until a short time ago, and two weeks ago she suffered a stroke, which finally brought her the peace she had been seeking for the past few years.

Mrs King is survived by her daughter, Mrs Cleo Robertson of Des Moines, and her son Byrum, of California, in addition to her only sister, Mrs Ann Harris of Tarkio, Mo.

She also leaves nine grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren,

and one great great grandchild, who will miss her very much.

Being a member of the Church, of God all her life, she lived a full life of service and devotion to her family and her Lord. And although she hated to leave her loved ones behind, she was looking forward to her new home in the great beyond.

Funeral services were Wednesday at Hopkins, Mo., for A. F. Mutti, 47, Ford dealer of Hopkins. He was a nephew of Mrs Lora Abernathy and she is expected to attend the funeral. Surviving are his wife, one son and one daughter.

Nagle, Pauline Christine Trost Arnold -

Pauline Christine Trost, the daughter of Jacob and Margaret

Trost was born June 13, 1880 in Hanover, Ill., and passed away

at her home in Lenox, Dec 17, 1957 at the age of 77 years, 6

months and 4 days.

At the age of 4 she came to Lenox with her parents.

On April 2, 1907 she was united in marriage to Charles Arnold

who passed away in 1934.  She was married in June of 1936

to John Nagle and they lived in Kansas City, Mo., until 1943.

In 1943 the family moved to Lenox where they have made their

home until Mrs Nagle's death.

She leaves to mourn her passing, her husband, one sister, Mrs Tony Schmitt, many nieces and nephews and a host of friends and relatives. She was preceded in death by her father, mother, 4 sisters and 3 brothers.

She became a member of the Christian Church when she was

18 years old.

Funeral services were at the Christian Church Dec 20, the Rev Robert Duckett officiating. Pall bearers were nephews Harold and Paul Notz, Lowell Harding, Hugh, Floyd and Donald Schmitt.

Petrie, Ben -

Ben Petrie, 85, a lifetime resident of Kent, died Nov 3, at a Clarinda Hospital. He had been ill about three years. Funeral services were held at Creston on Wednesday, Nov 6 with Rev C S Whitehouse officiating.  Burial in the Morgan cemetery near Kent. For many years Mr Petrie operated a produce station.  Mrs W H Clark of Kent,

his sister survives, also several nieces and nephews.

Pullen, Molly Lillie –

Funeral services were Saturday afternoon at Shenandoah for Mrs Molly Pullen, 85, who died Thursday.  Graveside services were later in the afternoon at Lenox cemetery where she was laid to rest.

Surviving are two sons, James and John Lillie of Lenox and several grandchildren.

Remus, Charles Frederick -

Charles F. Remus, 84, died Monday at 2:45 p. m. at the Lenox Rest Home. He had been in the mercantile business most of his life and was well known in the various towns where he owned stores.

He was born June 18, 1873 in Reed City, Mich.  After his marriage in 1901, he operated a general store in Fairport, Mo. for ten years.

From 1911 to 1938 he owned a ladies ready-to-wear store in

Maryville, Mo. While living there he was active in civic and church affairs. He served as president of the Chamber of Commerce .and treasurer of the Methodist Church, and was a member of the City Council. He belonged to the Elks Club, Woodmen of the World and

Masonic Shrine and Knights Templar.

He and Mrs Remus moved from Maryville to Lenox in 1938 and operated a dry goods store here until retirement in 1948. They made their home with relatives until three years ago when they came to Hotel Lenox. Mr Remus had been at the Rest Home since his recent illness.

Services were at the Bender Funeral Home Wednesday at 1:30 and graveside services at Oak Hill cemetery near Maryville at 3:30 p. m.

Surviving are his widow, Mary; three daughters, Mrs Donald E.

Williams, Alliance, Nebr.; Mrs Henry G Blanchard, Kansas City, Kan.; Mrs  Robert L. Ekins, Mokena, Ill.; also three grandchildren;

one sister, Mrs Stuart Hammond of E. Lansing, Mich.; and one brother, Lou Remus of Adrian, Mich.

Obituary ~

Charles Frederick Remus, the son of Carl Frederick Remus and Johanna Potratz Remus, was born in Reed City, Mich., on June 18, 1873.

Following his marriage to Mary Catherine Landis on July 1, 1901, he entered the merchandising business in Fairport, Mo., moving to various places as recorded above.

He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church in his boyhood, later joining the Methodist Church, to which his wife belonged.

Death came at 2:45 Monday afternoon, January 20, at the

age of 64 years, 7 months, and 2 days.

Reynolds, Henry Chauncey -

H. C. (Chauncey) Reynolds, 89, died Thursday morning at the Lenox Rest Home. Mr Reynolds was a retired farmer and carpenter and had been caretaker for the Lenox cemetery for 19 years.

Henry Chauncey Reynolds the son of Henry Reynolds and Susan Louisa McClurg Reynolds was born in McLean County, Illinois on Sept. 4, 1868.

On November 26, 1890, he was united in marriage with Cornettie

Susan Collins, who preceded him in death on November 14, 1934.

To this union were born five sons and two daughters: Henry

Claude, Lenox; Clarence Guy, Clearfield; Dennis Ray, Sheldon,

Wisc.; Sidney Pearl, Lenox; Amelia Irene (Mrs Les Jordan) of

Burbank, Calif.; Ida May (Mrs Silas Mayhue) of Holcombe Wisc. One son, Charles Amon, preceded him in death in 1912 at the age of 13.

In 1939 he was united in marriage to Altha Williams To this

union was born a daughter, Adelyn, of Lenox.

The last of eleven children in his family, he leaves in addition

to his sons and daughters, 19 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren to mourn his passing.

In September, 1915, the family moved from LeRoy, Ill., to a farm near Lenox where they resided until they moved to Lenox in 1920.

He was a carpenter until coming to Iowa, where he farmed for 5 years. Then moving into Lenox, he took the position of caretaker of the cemetery which he held for 19 years. In that work it gave him great satisfaction and pride to be with the beauty of nature and flowers, which he appreciated and enjoyed. His happiness in life meant doing for others rather than thought of himself. Although

blind for the last 16 years, ne took his handicap in stride, maintaining his cheerful disposition without complaint.

Death came Thursday morning January 16, 1958, at the Lenox Rest Home where he had spent the last 7 years. He had lived 89 years, 4 months and 12 days.

The funeral was held Saturday afternoon, January 18 at 2 o'clock at the Methodist Church in Lenox, the Rev. B. C. Collier, officiating. Interment was in the Fairview Cemetery.

Riedel, Virginia Mae Nohrenberg -

Mrs Virginia Riedel, 41, died at the Rosary Hospital in Corning

Tuesday morning. Funeral services will be at the Bender Funeral Home Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev Donald Lutz, Lutheran pastor from Corning, will officiate. Burial will be in the Lenox cemetery.

Mrs Riedel is survived by her husband, Richard; two daughters,

Catherine and Nancy, and one son, Ronald, all at home.

Riedel, Virginia Mae Nohrenberg -

Virginia Mae Riedel was born the daughter of Herman and

Minnie Nohrenberg on April 12, 1916 at Hawman, Nebr. It was

there that she was baptized on May 30, 1916. The family later

moved to White River, S. Dak., where in July 19, 1931 she renewed

her baptismal vow to confirmation, pledging loyalty to her Savior.

On Sept 11, 1941, she was joined in marriage to Richard Riedel. The union was blessed by three children.

The family lived at Carter Lake, Iowa, 2 years; at Raymond,

Nebr., one year; at Lincoln, 3 years and at Diagonal 4 years. They moved to the farm near Lenox seven years ago.

In 1950 Mrs Riedel was received into the communicant

membership of Redeemer Lutheran Church of Corning, Iowa

where she held membership until her departure.

She was taken ill this past October and departed this life Tuesday, Feb 11, at the age of 41 years, 9 months, and 11 days.

The funeral service was held at the Bender Funeral Home at

Lenox on Friday, Feb 14, at 2 p m., with commital at the Lenox

cemetery, the Rev .Donald Lutz, pastor of the Redeemer

Lutheran Church, officiating.

She leaves to mourn her early departure her husband, Richard

Riedel; 3 children, Ronald, Catherine and Nancy; her mother, Mrs Herman Nohrenberg of White River, S. Dak., two sisters, Mrs Don Goff of White River and Mrs Francis Y’deen of Eugene, Ore.; two

brothers, Pete and Paul Nohrenberg, both of White River, as well as many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her father and one sister Lucille.  May we cherish her memory.

Scott, Francis G. “Frank” -

Francis G. (Frank) Scott, 88, of Council Bluffs, former railroad

yard master and later a towerman in Creston, died at Council Bluffs, Wednesday. He was also a former resident of Kent and of Ringgold County. He moved to Council Bluffs from Creston in 1916.

Funeral services and burial were at Creston Saturday.

His wife, Jessie, and son, Walter Earl, preceded him in death.

Surviving relatives in this area are two nieces Mrs Glenn Dixon of Mt Ayr, Mrs C E Dixon Lenox, and a nephew Chester Wallace of Benton.

Sharpe, Gertrude Martin -

Gertrude Martin Sharpe died at the United Presbyterian home at Washington, Iowa, Sunday morning. She was born here and lived here in her youth, graduating from high school with the class of 1897. She attended Tarkio College.

Oct 12, 1904 she was married to Rev David Sharpe. Her husband and one son Robert are deceased. She leaves one son Don of Terre Haute, Ind., and 4 grandchildren.

Shum, Orie -

Orie Shum, 63, died Sunday [Jan. 19] at 3:30 p. m., at his home in Fremont, Nebr. He suffered a heart attack after shoveling snow.

Mr Shum had lived in Lenox until about five years ago. He worked on road maintenance for Taylor county for a number of years, and had served as street commissioner in Lenox.

He was employed as an electrician at Fremont.

Survivors include his wife, Helen, of Fremont; 1 daughter, Mrs Carol Kite, and 1 grandson, of Omaha, Nebr.; 2 brothers, Floyd, of Bedford, Lowell of Iowa Falls and 1 aunt, Mrs Fred Weller of Lenox.

The funeral was at Bedford Wednesday and burial in the

Lexington cemetery. Mr Shum was a member of the Masonic Lodge.

Stoaks, Sarah J. Preston -

Mrs Sarah J. Stoaks, 97, one of the oldest residents in Lenox died Monday at 7:30 p. m. in a Creston hospital. Funeral services are being held this afternoon, Thursday, at the Methodist Church, the Rev Burton Collier officiating. Burial will be in the Lenox cemetery.

Mrs Stoaks had kept her home and until recently had been able to do her own work and look after her business.

She is survived by two daughters Mrs Dora Caskey of Lenox

and Mrs Pearl Shaw of Spokane Wash.; two sons, Fred of Clearfield

and Andrew of Lenox; 9 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren

and 7 great great grandchildren. She was the last of the family of 11 children. One of her sisters lived to be 98 years old.

Her husband, Fred, and 2 sons preceded her in death. 

Mrs Stoaks had belonged to the Methodist Church here for 63 years, the longest period of any woman in the congregation. Her activities in the church were recognized when she was crowned "Queen for a Day,'' at a circle meeting on her 91st birthday.

Stoaks, Sarah J. Preston -

Sarah J. Stoaks, daughter of Charles and Sarah Preston was born July 25, 1880 in Scott County near Davenport, Iowa and passed away at the Greater Community Hospital in Creston on Dec. 9, 1957 at the age of 97 years, 4 months and 15 days.

She was united in marriage on January 2, 1879 near Davenport.  They came directly to their farm in Adams County and resided there until they moved to Lenox in September 1908.

To this union 6 children were born: Fred of Clearfield, Andrew of Lenox, Pearl (Mrs Clem Shaw) of Spokane, Wash.  Two sons, Charles and George preceded her in death.

The last of 11 in her family she had 9 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 7 great great grandchildren.

Her husband passed away August 26, 1926.  Living alone since his death, she has enjoyed good health, her flowers and neighbors.

In 1899 she united with the Methodist Church in Lenox.

Funeral services were at the Methodist Church Dec. 12, the Rev. Burton C Collier officiating.

Word was received Wednesday of the death of a former resident of Clearfield, Clarence Toops of Riverton, Wyo. He Is survived toy his wife Delia, sister of Ralph Round of this community, a daughter Pauline, 2 granddaughters and 2 grandsons.

Weller, Winifred Earl “Fred” -

Fred Weller 77, of Lenox, died Thursday at 3:00 pm at the Rosary Hospital in Corning. He and his wife had lived on a farm east of Conway until 1948 when they moved to Lenox. Survivors:

his wife, Gertie, of Lenox; 3 nieces and 2 nephews.

Funeral services were Saturday at the Shum Funeral Home

in Bedford with the Rev. Burton C. Collier of Lenox officiating.

Burial was in the Gravity cemetery.

Winfred Earl Weller, son of William and Lucinda Wright Weller, was born March 25, 1880 in Rock County, Kansas.

the Kent community. In 1891 they moved to Montgomery County, leaving there in 1901 to settle on a farm near Gravity.  He spent five years working on the Union Pacific Railroad out of Cheyenne, Wyo. which work he left in 1909 after purchasing a farm east of Conway.

On Sept. 21, 1920 he was united in marriage to Gertie May Piper.  They lived on the farm for 37 years before coming to Lenox in May, 1948.

His mother and father and three brothers preceded him in death.  Those left to mourn his passing include his wife, Gertie; Belle Norton of Conway, a cousin raised in his home; 2 sisters-in-law, 3 nephews and 2 nieces.

While yet a young man, Fred accepted Christ as his Saviour,

joining the Cramer Chapel Church. He later joined the Sharpsburg Methodist Church, transferring to the Methodist Church in Lenox.

Death came at Rosary Hospital in Corning Thursday, Jan 9, 1958, at the age of 77 years, 9 months, and. 15 days. Services were Jan 11 at Bedford with burial in Washington cemetery at Gravity, Rev Burton

Williams, Ella -

Funeral services for Mrs Ella Williams were held last Wednesday

afternoon at Varner-Crew funeral home here with Rev H. Ball officiating. Mrs Anna Bladon was a sister. Burial was in Clearfield cemetery.
