Amick, Myrtle L. Richardson –

Myrtle L. Richardson, daughter of John and Julia Richardson was born near Beloit, Mitchell county, Kansas, August 11, 1882.  She departed this life at her home in Blockton, Ia. Nov. 6, 1942, aged 60 years, 2 months and 26 days.

She moved with her parents to Ringgold county, Iowa in 1893.  She became a member of the United Presbyterian church at Redding in 1900 and was a faithful member until her death.

She was graduated from the Redding High School in 1902.  On February 8, 1905 she was united in marriage to B. B. Amick at her home in Redding.  To this union five children were born; three dying in infancy.  She leaves to mourn her passing, her husband, two daughters, Opal and Mrs. Ruby Minor, both at home, and a step-daughter, Mrs. Vera Campbell of Des Moines, four grandchildren and one great grandson; four sisters, Mrs. Abbie Harris and Frona Richardson of Redding, and Mrs. Anna Gardiner of South Gate, Calif., and Mrs. Olive Cossand of Garden Grove, Calif., two brothers, Orville of Delphos Iowa and Alvah of South Gate, Calif. and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon Nov. 8, at the Redding United Presbyterian church by the pastor the Rev. S. C. Picken, assisted by the Rev. E. B. Stewart, pastor of the Methodist churches at Blockton and Redding.  Burial was made in the family lot in Redding.

Barber, R. N. –

R. N. Barber, 68, brother of J. H. Barber of Lenox, died in his home in St. Joseph, Mo., Sunday.

Funeral services were Tuesday afternoon at Maryville, with burial at Burlington Junction, Mo.

In addition to his brother here, he is survived by his widow, a son and a daughter.  J. H. Barber was in Maryville Tuesday to attend the rites.

Wallace Bates, father of Mrs. Jake Kernen of Conway, died at his daughter’s home Saturday, Dec. 8.

Bauman, Emma Theodotia “Daisy” O’Neal –

Emma Theodotia Bauman, daughter of William Henry and Amanda O’Neal, was born in Cainsville, Harrison County, Missouri, January 20, 1875 and died August 17, 1942 at her home in Lenox, Ia.

Daisy, as she was known by her many friends, was the fourth child of a family of 10 children.  Her early life was spent at Cainsville, coming to Iowa in 1890.

She was united in marriage to L. S. Bauman September 22, 1893 at Bethany, Mo. and to them were born a son, Leland, who preceded his mother in death on March 4, 1917.

Mr. and Mrs. Bauman moved to their farm two miles south of Lenox in 1894 where they resided for 48 years, then moved to their home in Lenox a year ago last spring.

Mrs. Bauman was a member of the Methodist church and always tried to be in her place in worship whenever her health permitted.

She was a wonderful homemaker and a faithful and devoted wife, always having her husband’s needs uttermost in her mind.

Surviving are her husband, four sisters, Mrs. Rose Lundy of Shell City, Mo., Mrs. Minnie Polen, Berbeck, Ill., Mrs. Bell Lundy of Nevada, Ia., and Mrs. Lon Salisbury of Lenox; three brothers, William O’Neal of Minburn, Ia., Ira O’Neal of Cainsville, and Earl O’Neal of David City.

Funeral services were from the Lenox Methodist church Wednesday, August 19, conducted by the Rev. J. Machlan.  Interment was in the Lenox cemetery.

Bolte, William Charley –

William Charley Bolte, eldest son of Conrad and Mary Bolte, was born at DeWitte, Clinton county, Iowa November 10, 1866, and passed away at his home in Lenox, Oct 5, 1942, aged 75 years, 10 months and 25 days.

At the age of 26 years he with his parents moved to Carroll county, Iowa, near Manning.  He was married to Sophia Kock, June 2, 1897.  To this unon five children were born: Grover O. of Council Bluffs, Ia..; Daniel who died in infancy; Roy C. of Corning, Ia.; Mae Krohmer and Alice Lockham of Lenox.

Also surviving are seven grandchildren and two brothers and two sisters of Wheatland, Wyo.

He with his family moved to Wyoming in 1904 and nine years later back to Manning.  They came to Taylor county in 1920, first living 3 and one half miles south of Lenox, then to the town of Lenox in March 1924.

He was a janitor and faithful custodian of the Presbyterian church for fourteen years. 

He united with the church by profession of faith, January 2, 1927, and was a faithful member, never missing a meeting unless illness prevented.

He was a kind and loving husband and father, a good friend and neighbor and will be greatly missed by all those who loved him for kindness and sterling qualities.

Bush, Callie Belle Recknor

Callie Belle Recknor was born July 21, 1890 near Nevinville, Ia. and after several years illness died at her home near Stringtown on November 21, 1942, at the age of 52 years and four months.

She was united in marriage to Leroy E. Bush January 4, 1911.  To them were born two children, Inez Miller now of Shenandoah, and Lyle D. Bush, now serving his country in an army camp at Orlando, Fla.

She united with the Methodist church at Prescott at the age of 14 and later transferred her membership to the Stringtown Federated church, where she has been a faithful worker since.

She leaves her husband, two children and one grandchild, Shirley Reckner; a brother, Ernest Reckner of New Richland, Minn. And three sisters, Cora Buxton of Kent, Etta Black and Mary Ferguson, both of Lenox.

Funeral services were from the Stringtown Federated church on Monday at two o’clock with the Rev. J. H. Maclan in charge.  Interment was in Stringtown cemetery.

Christensen, Sofia Christensen –

Sofia Christensen, daughter of Jens and Marie Christensen was born in Denmark, March 9, 1861 and died November 25, 1942 at the age of 58 years, 8 months and 18 days.

She joined the Lutheran church as a child, and remained true and faithful to God.

On June 29, 1904 she united in marriage to Chris Christensen and to them were born 9 children, four of them laid in rest.

She leaves to mourn her passing, her husband, five children, Rosa Karas, Sharpsburg, Mabel Jensen, Clearfield, Harold Christensen, Kent, Agnus Young, Lenox and Violet, at home, also four grandchildren, two sisters and 3 brothers.

She will be greatly missed by everyone, as she was loved by all who knew her.

Cihak, Leo Albert –

Leo Albert Cihak, 13, former Lenox resident and son of Mrs. And Mrs. Lawrence Cihak, died last week in University Hospital, Iowa City.

Funeral services were Friday afternoon from the Nevinville Methodist church with the Rev. E. F. Hagee in charge.

Surviving are his parents, a brother, Donald R., age 7; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Cihak of Afton and Mrs. Clara Ross of Lenox.

Ford, Emma Campbell –

Emma Campbell, daughter of Enoch and Sally Campbell, was born in Indiana, Dec. 5, 1864 and lived to be 77 years and 11 month.

She moved when eight years of age, with her parents to Taylor county, Iowa where she resided nearly all of her remaining years.

She united in membership at an early age with the Baptist church at Mr. Zion, a rural church northeast of Athelstan and later transferred her membership to the Blockton Christian church where she remained a loyal worker until her health prevented.

In 1883 she was united in marriage to Amos H. Ford.  To this union were born three sons.  R.O. of Blockton, H. Ward of St. Joseph, Mo., and Wayen D. of Mt. Vernon, Wash.

Mrs. Ford leaves to mourn her the three sons and their wives, three grandchildren; four great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Mattie Adams of Ellston, Iowa, Mrs. Florence Maxfield of Boise, Idaho, and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon at Blockton Christian by the Rev. E. F. Stewart.  Music was furnished by a quartet composed of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Wilson, Mrs. Joe Morris and Glen Dennis.   Mrs. Georgia Steen was accompanist.  Burial was made in the Blockton cemetery.

Gehr, George –

Relatives here received word this week of the death of George Gehr now of Peoria, Illinois.  Mr. Gehr died Saturday at his home.  A former resident of Lenox, Mr. Gehr left here several years ago.  He is the uncle of George Manroe, local resident.  No funeral plans or date of rites was included in the message to relatives here.

Hayes, Emma Agnes Smith –

Emma Agnes Smith was born to Ann and Michael Smith, on Feb. 2, 1871, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Frank Teply near Mt. Ayr on Aug. 7, 1943 [paper says 1943, but it is in the 1942 paper], at the age of 71 years, 6 months and 5 days.

Her girlhood life was spent in the Taylor and Ringgold counties,  On April 11, 1893 she was united in marriage to James F. Hayes at Maloy.

They came to make their home on a farm 2 miles southeast of Lenox.  To this union five children were born.  They are Verna Phillips and Gertrude Toland of Lenox; Dessa Teply of Mt. Ayr and Ralph and Arthur of Cedar Rapids.

In 1914 her husband’s health failed and they moved to town.  He preceded her in death on June 30, 1918, leaving her with part of her family to raise fatherless.

In 1937 she went to Michigan to live with her son, Arthur.  In January 1941 they came back to Lenox and the last years has been spent in Cedar Rapids.

She leaves to mourn her loss her five children, 3 grandchildren, one great grandchild, two sisters, Mrs. R. B. Dodge of Oakland, Calif. and Mrs. Mary Higgins of Des Moines, and also a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Walsh at St. Patrick’s church in Lenox, Ia. at 10 o’clock, Monday August 10.  Interment was made in Fairview cemetery in Lenox.

Hepperly, John Wesley –

John Wesley Hepperly, son of Thomas and Salina Hepperly, was born July 2, 1870 near Lincoln, Ill., and died October 14, 1942 at his home in Clearfield, at the age of 72 years, three months and 12 days.

In 1867 the family moved to Ringgold county, Iowa and here Mr. Hepperly attended the rural school and grew to manhood.

On November 27, 1894 he was married to Anna Larson.  They established their home in Lincoln township, Ringgold county.  Five children were born to them: Three sons, Roland, Harlan and an infant son preceded their father in death; one daughter, Verna Muir of San Francisco, and a son Jodie Hepperly of Clearfield.  Mrs. Hepperly died September 5, 1921 at their home northeast of Clearfield.

He was again married to Mrs. Elva Rhodes August 23, 1922.  Surviving are his wife, daughter and son and two grandchildren, two brothers and a sister of Vancouver, Wash.

Funeral services were from the Clearfield Christian Church on Sunday, October 18.  Burial was in the Clearfield cemetery.

Hickenlooper, Amy –

Funeral services were Sunday from the Blockton Methodist church for Mrs. Amy Hickenlooper who died at her home on Thursday, Sept. 24 [1942].

Mrs. Hickenlooper, 65, was the aunt of Bourke B. Hickenlooper, Iowa’s Lieutenant Governor.  Surviving are her husband; a son, Seldon B.; her sister Mrs. O. R.. Morris of Crawford, Nebr.; a brother, Dr. W. H. Blakemore of Baker, Mont.; a niece, Mrs. Helen Gott of Crawford, Nebr. and a nephew Harvey Morris of Boulder City, Nev.

Rites were conducted by the Rev. E. B. Stewart.  Interment was in the Blockton cemetery.

Irvin, Winnie Addie Belle Smith -

Winnie Addie Belle Smith, daughter of John and Annie Smith, was born August 18, 1875 and departed this life November 28, 1942 at the University hospital in Iowa City at the age of 67 years, 3 months and 10 days.

She spent her early life in Ringgold county, Iowa.  When she was quite young, her father went West and never returned.  Later her mother was married to Scott Lee.  They lived several years in Parnell, Missouri where she attended high school.

She united in membership with the Methodist Church in Parnell, Mo. in early girlhood, later transferring her membership to the Baptist church in Athlestan. Iowa.

She was united in marriage to Egbert Elias Eugene Irvin on November 1, 1896 at Athelstan where they spent the most of their married life.  To this union were born eight children. 

Mrs. Irvin is survived by her husband and seven children: Harold Franklin, Sheridan, Mo., Vera Mable Smith, Athelstan, Mo., Annie Fern Brumfield, Sheridan, Mo., Pvt. Guy Egbert, who is somewhere in England, Robert Loren, Blockton, Pvt. Elmer Orin, Camp Crowder, Mo., and Zola May Maness, Athlestan, Ia.

She also leaves ten grandchildren, one half-sister, Bertha White and numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends.  She was preceded in death by a daughter, Edith Edna, who died at 6 years of age, and a half sister Jennie Oneil.

She was a kind and loving wife and mother and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 1, at the Athelstan Community church, by Rev. E. B. Stewart, Methodist pastor at Blockton.  Burial was in the Athelstan cemetery.

Little, Harry C. –

Harry C. Little, 76, pioneer Bedford grocer and well known here, died suddenly Tuesday morning in a Des Moines hospital.

Miller, Elver

Elver Miller, brother of Raymond Miller, Lenox motor dealer, died at his home in Bedford Wednesday night.  He had been  ill since Monday.

Surviving are his widow, his sons, Harold who is at officer’s school in Georgia, and Ronald who is stationed in a Maryland army camp; four

sisters, Mrs. Floyd Van Reenen, Mrs. Jasper Perkin, Mrs. William Smith and Mrs. Lloyd Stickelman, all of Bedford, and his brother Raymond Miller of Lenox.  Funeral services were Tuesday in Bedford.

Miller, Jacob –

Jacob Miller, son of Philip and Margaret Miller, was born in Germany January 1, 1863 and died September 23, 1942 at the age of 80 years, eight months and 22 days.

He came to the United State at the age of three years, locating in Bremen, Ind. where he resided until 20 years ago when he came to Iowa and lived with his parents near and in Lenox.  He was the second child of a family of 10 children, all having succeeded him death except for a brother, Fred, who now resides in Creston.

Known as “Uncle Jake” to his many friends, his friendship was cherished by scores.

Funeral services were Friday afternoon at 2:30 from the Arnold

Funeral Home with the Rev. J. H. Machlan in charge of the rites.  Burial was in the Lenox cemetery.

Olds, George Elmer –

George Elmer Olds, son of James and Elizabeth Ward Olds, was born Dec. 16, 1870 in Louisa county, Iowa and passed away Saturday, Nov. 7, 1942 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Lloyd Goodvin of Corning at the age of 71 years, 10 months and 21 days.

He was united in marriage to Anna Bell Carey June 7, 1896, and she preceded him in death 18 years ago.  To this union were born 6 children, the last born dying in infancy and also the twin sister of Mrs. Goodvin.

The surviving children are Fern Klinzman, Lenox, Ia., Luther, Corning, Ia., Lewis McOrath, Minn., Nellie Goodvin, Corning, Ia., and Gladys Olds, Des Moines, also five sisters, Mrs. Myrtle Means, Bridgewater, Ia., Mrs. Daisy Grosbeck, Shenandoah, Ia., Mrs. Linda Wilson, Jackson, Tenn., Mrs. Elizabeth Goodale, Galesburg, Ill., and Mrs. Hattie Jarvis, Breckenridge, Minn., four brothers, Walker, Carbon, Ia., Leroy, Corning and twin brothers, Hervey of Gothenburg, Nebr. and Harvey of Glendo, Minn.  Fifteen grandchildren and a great granddaughter, Carol Elaine Reynolds of Bremerto, Wash., also survive.

In the year 1929 during a revival meeting at the Salem church of the Brethern he made his confession of Christ his Saviour and was buried with Him in Christian baptism and arose to walk with Him in newness of life and to this faith he was true until his Master called him from his earthly tabernacle to dwell with Him for eternity. 

For the past 2 years he has been failing in health gradually becoming worse until he was moved to the home of his daughter where for about 6 months she, with the assistance of his niece, Mrs. Ruth Cooper cared patiently for him, assisted by his daughter, Fern and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted at the Hilliard Funeral Home in Corning, Monday, Nov. 9 at 2:30 by the Rev. Chas. Colyn of Lenox, and the body was taken to Gothenburg, Neb. the following day for burial.

Powers, Gladys –

Funeral services were at two o’clock Sunday afternoon at Creston for Mrs. Gladys Powers who died Wednesday at the Fred Cooper home in Conway.

Raynor, Eva –

Mrs. Eva Raynor, 83, died Friday [Nov. 6, 1942] at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Irvin Cunning after a short illness.

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Forrest Pershin, Mrs. Cunning and Mrs. Ben White, all of Lenox; and a niece, Mrs. Tom Kirby.

Funeral services were Sunday from the New Market Baptist church with the Rev. O. H. Hallgrimson in charge of the rites.  Interment was made in Memory cemetery.

Sawyer, M. A. “Mel” -

Funeral services were in Bedford Sunday afternoon from the Wetmore Funeral Home for M. A. (Mel) Sawyer, well know here.

Mr. Sawyer died following a heart attack at his home Wednesday evening.  He had just returned from a drive which had taken him over more than 100 miles of Taylor County.

Active in public life, Mr. Sawyer at one time was a member of the county board of supervisors, and served as county recorder and was secretary of the Farmers Mutual Insurance Co. of Taylor at the time of his death.

He is survived by his widow and by one brother, John G. Sawyer of Bedford.  Interment was in Fairview cemetery, Bedford.

Underwood, Hannah Caorline Swanson –

Hannah Caorline Swanson, daughter of Benjamin and Anna Swanson was born in Rio, Ill. November 13, 1872 and died October 27, 1942 at her home in Lenox at the age of 70 years, 11 months and 14 days. She had been ill for several months.

When about 11 years old, she moved with her parents to Taylor County, Iowa, which with the exception of one year spent in Minnesota, was her home.

On January 13, 1892 she was united in marriage to Clarence Underwood.  To this union were born five children: Mabel C. Knott, Myrna M. Bush of Sharpsburg; Gladys H. Elder of Lenox and Lyle W. of F.E. Warren, Wyoming and C. Glade, who preceded his mother in death 12 years ago.

She united with the Morning Star Church when a young woman and later transferred her membership to the Presbyterian church of Sharpsburg of which she was a charter member until the time of her death.  She leaves to mourn his passing her husband and four children, two brothers, Elmer and Amos Swanson, and a sister, Ida Hoops of Cherokee, Iowa; nine grandchildren; three great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. E. F. Hagee were Friday afternoon, October 30, from the Barber Funeral Home in Lenox.  Burial was in the Gravity cemetery.

Weese, Enoch Edward –

Enoch Weese, 58-year-old Lenox laborer, was fatally injured shortly after five o’clock Monday evening while working on the Dennis Hogan farm west of Stringtown.

Weese was dead before he reached Lenox where he was rushed for medical attention following the mishap.

He leaves his widow; five sons and four daughters.

The mishap is believed to have occurred when the hitch on a tile dredging machine broke.  Under tension, a long sweep to which the horses were hitched was freed and in circling it struck Weese full in the face.

The man’s skull was crushed.  The impact, according to those with him on the work, threw Weese more than eight feet.  Frank Amburn, operator of the ditcher and George Plows were working at the machine when the accident occurred.  Neither saw Weese when he was struck by the sweep.

Short rites will be at eleven o’clock Thursday morning at the Arnold Funeral Home in Lenox.  The body then will be taken to Isadora, Mo. where funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. with interment in Isadora cemetery.

No inquest was held, the coroner deeming it unnecessary under the circumstance which clearly showed accidental death.

Weese, Enoch Edward -

Enoch Edward Weese, son of Ed and Elste Weese, was born in Worth County, Missouri, May 4, 1885, and was accidently killed working near Lenox, Iowa, at the age of 57 years, 6 months and 26 days.

Most of his life was spent in Worth County, Mo.  At the time of his death he was living in Lenox, Iowa.  He was united in marriage to Minnie Tucher, October 14, 1906.  To this union ten children were born as follows:  B. W. Weese of Blockton, Iowa; Mrs. Jesse Notion, Granby, Mo.; Edna Key, Corning, Iowa; Herbert Weese, Violett Wood, Edgar Weese, Kenneth Weese, Calvin Weese, all of Lenox; Madelyn Weese at home and Albert died in infancy.

Besides his nine children, he leaves to mourn his departure his faithful companion, one sister, Mrs. Cora Walton of Conway, Iowa, one brother, Noble Weese of Sheridan, Mo., and many other relatives and friends.  Also 18 grandchildren.  His father and mother and two sisters, Elizabeth Shellman and Genette Weese, and two brothers, Elmer and Jesse W. Weese preceded him in death.

He confessed his faith in Christ at Isadora, Mo., and united with the Isadora Christian at that place, where he remained a member until his death. He was a faithful husband and loving father and a good neighbor.

Funeral services were held at the Arnold Funeral Home in Lenox December 3, at 11 a.m. conducted by Rev. Challie E. Graham of Sheridan and also at the Isadora Christian Church, assisted by David A. Dye of the Athleston, Iowa church.  Interment was in the Isadora cemetery.

White, Marion Kaye –

Marion Kaye White, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard White was born July 17, 1942 and died September 8 [1942] at Greater Community Hospital in Creston after a very short illness.

Little Marion leaves to survive, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bernard White; four grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Fern Phillips and Mr. and Mrs. Ben white, together with a number of other relatives.

Wood, Clara –

Short funeral services were held here Saturday afternoon from the Barber Funeral Home for Mrs. Clara Wood, 87, former Lenox resident.

Surviving is a sister, Mrs. Sarah Moore of Albia, and her children, Mrs. L. D. Smith, Bert Wood, J. P Wood, James L. Wood, all of Idaho Falls and a granddaughter, Mrs. Bernita Gibson, with whom she made her home.
