MRS. LEMUEL DEREMER
Fannie Lucinda Gilbert, daughter of Gersham Waite Gilbert
and Emmie Turner Gilbert, was born near Colon, Michigan, on September
1, 1853, and passed away on April 10, 1931, at the home of her
daughter, Mrs. Albert E. Coe, of Des Moines, Iowa. She was well
past her seventy-seventh birthday when death came in a sudden heart
attack, claiming her mercifully without illness or pain.
She was united in marriage with Orson Thompson on November
24, 1870. Two children were born to this union, Ralph A Thompson
of Bedford, Iowa, and Mrs. Blanche Wood of Alhambra, Calif. Mr.
Thompson passed away on October 8, 1878. She was again married on
October 18, 1881, to Lemuel Deremer. To this union two children
were born: Mrs. Anna Coe and Roy Deremer. Mr. Deremer preceded
her in death, passing away on March 17, 1929.
In early girlhood she began the Christian life in the
Methodist church and just one week before her decease she partook of
the Communion at her home church in Des Moines, and afterwards
expressed the feeling that it had been the most beautiful service of
the kind she had ever attended.
She was a kind and unselfish mother, always unsparing of
herself wherever she could be of service. Even her last hours
found her loving hands busy with a loving token for one of her
grandchildren. Of her immediate family there remain four
children: Blanche, Ralph, Anna and Roy; one sister, Mrs. Ellen Patton
of Bedford and four grandchildren, Donald Wood, Dorothy Coe, and Helen
and Dorothy Fay Deremer.
The funeral services were held at the Wetmore Funeral Home
Tuesday afternoon, April 14, and burial was in the Graceland cemetery
west of Bedford, Rev. M. R. Talley of the local Methodist church in
charge.

ORSON THOMPSON
The funeral of Orson Thompson occurred on Wednesday and was
largely attended, the services being held by Rev. Mr. Blodgett in the
school house near his residence, four miles west of the city.
Mr. Thompson has been sick for several weeks with typhoid
fever, and it was generally hoped he was recovering. He leaves a
wife and two small children who will have the sympathy of the entire
community in this, their sad bereavement.
The deceased had been a citizen of Taylor County about 10
years, was a good citizen, a kind husband and father, and generally
beloved by those who knew him. He had been a member of the M. E.
Church for 12 years, and died in the full consciousness of the saving
power of Jesus Christ. He falls at the early age of twine, but
life is not counted by years, but by deeds, and life with Mr. Thompson
not a blank.

ELLEN PATTON
Ellen Patton, youngest daughter of Gersham Waite and Mary
McCloud Gilbert, was born July 2, 1869 and died January 2, 1944 at the
age of 75 years and 6 months. She lived her entire life in the
Gilbert homestead.
On October 6, 1887, she was married to Fred H. Patton, who
preceded her in death, on December 9, 1920 at the age of 55 years and 9
months.
To this union two children were born: Kate M. and
Ralph. The son, Ralph, died in France during the First World War.
One and one half years previous to the death of the husband
and father, Kate and her husband, Walter Thompson, went to live at the
old home and care for her mother, who was ill. For 24 years, she
was an invalid and they have patiently and lovingly cared for
her. The last 4 years were spent in an invalid's chair, yet her
hands were always busy fashioning beautiful needlework as gifts.
In her early girlhood, she united with the Gilead Church,
and as long as health permitted, she was active in all community
affairs. She was always quick to respond to the call when
relatives, friends or neighbors were ill or in need of help.
Surviving are the daughter, Kate M. Thompson and her
husband, two granddaughters, Phyllis Henry and Ellen Jean Mullen, four
great-grandchildren, Gerald and Larry Glenn Mullen, Julia Marie and
Philip David Henry. Also one sister-in-law, Rena Patton of Los
Angeles, Calif.

FRED HUGH PATTON
Fred H. Patton was born near Carthage, Illinois March 4,
1865 and departed this life at 4 p.m. December 9, 1920, age 55 years, 9
months and 5 days.
On October 5, 1887 he was united in marriage to Miss Ellen
Gilbert at the old homestead where they now reside.
To them were born two children, a son Ralph, who died in
France in the service of his country and a daughter, Kate M. who with
her husband Walter R. Thompson reside with their parents on the
farm. There is one grandchild, Phyllis May to whom the
grandfather was very much attached.
Mr. Patton's mother died in 1879 near Carthage, Ill., and
his father died in Los Angeles, Calif., in 1919. His sister, Miss
Rena Patton and his step-mother, Mrs. Mattie M. Patton, reside in Los
Angeles, Calif. and are unable to be present. His only brother,
Ernest Patton of New Castle, Colorado is present. Besides these,
there are many nephews, nieces and cousins who reside here or near here
and most all of them were present at the funeral.
Mr. Patton united with the Methodist church at Gilead in the
winter of 1888 under the ministry of Rev. E. H. Todd and has been a
faithful and active member all these years and at the time of his death
was a steward of the Gilead church.
It can be truthfully said as one of his neighbors remarked
at his bedside that he was one of those rare characters that you
occasionally met up within a community who has a host of friends and no
enemies, beloved and respected by all and whose life and influence will
be missed by his friends and neighbors.
FRED PATTON
Fred Patton who was stricken while at work in the cornfield,
Wednesday of last week, and died the following day at 4 o'clock was
buried Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The funeral took place at
the Gilead church and the interment at the Graceland cemetery, formerly
Titus. Mr. Patton was apparently in the best of health when he
was stricken, without a moments notice. And when the news was
flashed over the wire conveying the sad news to his many friends
throughout the county, it came with a terrible shock to all.
The family have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire
community in the loss of father and husband.

Pat...
Gotta make it up to you! I have more.
This time, I think I've checked all the pages to avoid
duplicates. Several have no newspaper referenced. I
obtained these from Nodaway Museum and was so grateful to get them that
I didn't argue. Wish I had gone back and asked. If you
don't want to include, that's fine. Also, wasn't sure if you would want
my MARTIN (brother of Olive WEIR) family as although both were b.
Taylor County...they died in Carroll County. Have proofed these
but may have missed something so feel free to fix anything that doesn't
look right.

Thursday, October 17, 1907, page 5, column 2 W. D. HARRIS DEAD
W. D. Harris was born in Holt county, Missouri, January 24,
1849, and died at his home at North Bedford, October 11, 1907, aged 58
years, 8 months and 17 days. In 1865 he moved to Taylor county,
which has ever since been his home. On February 28, 1877, he was
united in marriage to Laura F. Turner, at New Market. To this
happy union five children were born, all of whom are living. They
are Elva Harris, Kennewick, Wash.; Mrs. Ola M. McCloy, Shenandoah,
Iowa; Perle, Georgia and Gail, at home. Deceased also leaves two
brothers, J.S.[John Sexton] Harris, of New
Market, and C. L.[Christopher Lester] Harris, of
Coin, and a sister, Mrs. Alice Holiday, of Grandview, Iowa.
Mr. Harris united with the Baptist church early in life,
remaining a faithful and consistent member to the day of his
death. While living at New Market he engaged for a number of
years in teaching school. He farmed in Dallas township and also
in Clayton township. Last spring he was a candidate for the
republican nomination for county auditor and has always taken an active
interest in republican politics of the county and his advice and
experience was always found good. Last spring he bought a home in
North Bedford to which he moved and where he expected to live a life of
comparative ease. As a husband he was kind and affectionate; as a
father indulgent and as a neighbor and friend, staunch and true.
As he leaves a heart broken wife and children, brothers and sister to
mourn his untimely death, the community expresses to them their deepest
sympathy.
About three weeks ago he injured his knee with an axe, and
while it had not kept him bedfast he had not been feeling very
well. On Friday evening his wife was dressing the slight wound
for him and he complained then of feeling very bad. He was put to
bed and in a few moments the spirit had flown.
A short funeral service was held Monday morning at 8:30 at
the home and the remains were taken to New Market, where the funeral
services were held, conducted by Rev. A. I. Jones, and interment was in
Old Memory cemetery.

A brother of the deceased, C. L. Harris, resides at Coin,

In early life Mr. Harris joined the Baptist church, to which

noble character, honest and honorable, and one whom the community can
ill afford to spare. His bereaved wife and children have the most
sincere sympathy of all.
