Former New Market Teacher Dies Jan. 11
Mrs. Dorothy Youngberg Allen, a teacher in the New Market schools during the thirties, died January 11 in the home of her daughter in Davenport. She and her husband of Sun City, Arizona, were spending the holidays in Davenport. Interment was at Graceland Memorial Cemetery in Creston.
She is survived by her husband, Merwyn Allen; a daughter, Mrs. Linnea Holmer, of Davenport; son, James Allen, of Michigan; and a sister, Mrs. Reuben Youngdahl, of Minnesota.

Gary Goin, 28 Rites Held Dec. 3 In Blockton
Funeral services for Gary Howard Goin, 28, of Blockton were held Mon., Dec. 3, at the Blockton Christian Church, conducted by Rev. George W. Swan. Mr. Goin died November 30, 1973, at the Mental Health Institute, Clarinda, Ia. Interment was at Rose Hill Cemetery, Blockton.
Gary Howard Goin, son of Virgil and Maxine Goin, was born at Maryville, Mo., November 6, 1945.
Gary grew up in Blockton, and about the age of four years contracted a schizophrenic condition that grew a little worse as he grew older. The last few years he was a victim of cancer and finally succumbed to this disease, after a brave fight to recover.
While under doctors' care he showed a great patience and enjoyed the many visits by his mother, Maxine. Gary was baptized by the chaplain of the University Hospitals, Iowa City, and took Jesus as his Savior.
He was preceded in death by his father, Virgil.
Those surviving are: his mother, Maxine, a stepfather, Raymond Wisdom, of Blockton; one sister, Marian Tobby, of Garden Grove, Calif.; grandmother, Lillian Goodridge, 1816 Dean Ave., Des Moines, Ia.; nieces; nephews: Lexine, Cindy, Jeffery, Kathy and Jackie Tobby of Garden Grove, Calif.; five aunts; two uncles; other relatives and friends.

Beulah Hogg, 78 Last Rites Held In Blockton
Funeral services for Mrs. Clarence (Beulah) Hogg, 78, of Sharon Springs, Kansas, were held in Sharon Springs, followed by a service in the Blockton Methodist Church on December 4. Mrs. Hogg died December 1, 1973 at the Northwest Kansas Medical Center in Goodland, Kansas. Interment was at Rose Hill Cemetery, Blockton.
Beulah Mae (Drennen) Hogg, daughter of Charles and Anna [Belle Pratt] Drennen, was born February 10, 1895 in New Market, Iowa.
She was united in marriage to Clarence Ballou Hogg August 16, 1911 at Bedford, Iowa. To this union four children were born, two of whom died in infancy. Two children survived; Helen Maxine Hodel of Vancouver, Wash, and Darlene Ruth Stout of Sharon Springs, Kans.
Mrs. Hogg was a dedicated wife and mother. She enjoyed homemaking. She loved her family and provided a home in which her children learned to love and share the blessings of life with others.
Following the death of her husband she moved from Iowa to Sharon Springs, Kansas. She moved to the Prairie Manor in 1965 and made this her home.
She enjoyed gardening and was very successful growing beautiful flowers. She won many a blue ribbon at the county fair.
Mrs. Hogg was a member of the Social Hour Club.
She was a member of the Methodist Church in Blockton, Iowa and was a faithful and dedicated member of that church.
Mrs. Hogg was preceded in death by her husband, two children and her parents.
She is survived by two daughters, Helen Maxine Hodel of Vancouver, Wash, and Darlene Ruth Stout of Sharon Springs, Kansas; one sister, Mildred Kellogg of Vancouver, Wash.; two sons-in-law, Ernest Hodel of Vancouver and Charles S. Stout of Sharon Springs; three grandchildren, Charlene H. Elder of Goodland, Kansas, R. Craig Stout of Sharon Springs, Kansas and Janet Noel of Vancouver, Wash.; five great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Mabel Layman, 85 Last Rites Held December 7
Funeral services for Mrs. James (Mabel) Layman, 85, of Rockwell City, Ia., a native of Gravity, were held in Rockwell City December 7. Mrs. Layman died at the Stewart Memorial Hospital in Spirit Lake, Iowa December 4, 1973. Interment was at Rockwell City.
Mabel Inez Layman, daughter of Frank [lin] E. [dgar] and Tabitha [Ellen] Morgan Marshall, was born on a farm near Gravity, Iowa, December 29, 1888.
She attended school in Gravity.
On March 10, 1920 she was united in marriage with James Frank [lin] Layman. They lived in Corning, then moved to Rockwell City, Ia., in 1936. Mrs. Layman was a member of the United Methodist Church, U.M. W. and W.R.C.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband one son, Lewis E., two brothers, William [Daniel] and Homer, two sisters, Pearl and Belva.
Surviving are three daughters, Leaffy (Mrs. Loyd Hinch) of Brainerd, Minn., Berandean (Mrs. Paul Hunt) Corning, and Lois (Mrs. Robert Voss) Alleman; one son, James S. Layman, Shenandoah; 17 grandchildren; 41 great grandchildren; three brothers, Leon Marshall, Bedford, Charles Marshall, Plymouth, Mich., Clarence Marshall, Kansas City, Mo.; two sisters, Mrs. Ollie Ferguson, Bedford, and Mrs. Elsie Longfellow of Wichita Falls, Texas; many other relatives and friends.

Obituary – Mrs. John Mankle
Mrs. John Mankle died at her home in New Market, Thursday, Oct. 22, after an illness of several months. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in New Market Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Clarence Moore of Truro, Iowa. Burial was in Dallas Center cemetery.
Leta Irene Travis, daughter of Earl [Custer] and Gertrude [Alice Novinger] Travis, was born near Sidney, Iowa, in Fremont County, August 29, 1907. The family moved to this vicinity in 1915. Here Leta attended school, graduated from high school and later attended business college in Des Moines.
She was married to John [Milford] Mankle April 10, 1929. To them were born three children: a baby daughter [Lila Lee] who died at birth, a daughter Jolene [Ann] and son Richard [Alan].
To know Leta was to love her. She possessed those attributes of character and personality that made her the good neighbor, the good friend and companion. Her highest ambition was to serve her family well.
She loved the work of the Eastern Star lodge. She was faithful to its teachings, and devoted much of her time and effort to the discharge of duties. She was Worthy Matron this year and would have been so happy to have known that her project of sending clothing to the War orphans of Germany had been completed and that a letter acknowledging its receipt had been received expressing deep gratitude.
She took an active part in the affairs of the community and the Mankle home was known for its hospitality.
Leta and her family attended the Methodist church.
By her death she leaves in mourning: Her husband, daughter Jolene, and son Richard [Alan]; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Travis of Clarinda; three brothers, Merle of Bedford, [Earl] Duane and Kenneth [Rex] of Clarinda.

Funeral services held for longtime Bedford businessman
The final week of 1997 brought the most stunning news of the year for Taylor County when longtime Bedford businessman Boyd Novinger was found dead in his home on Sunday afternoon.
Autopsy reports indicated that Novinger, 77, died of gunshot wounds to the chest.
Law enforcement officials working on the case, including agents from the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation, are releasing few details. A brief release last week indicated only the basic facts. This week the Taylor County Sheriffs Department said only that the case is still under investigation.
Novinger was a funeral director with Novinger-Taylor Funeral Home in Bedford. His daughter Christy and her husband H. Keith Taylor were actively involved in operation of the funeral home, which was formerly known as Shum-Novinger.
The family has announced a $2,500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the party or parties responsible for the death.
Those with any information about the incident are asked to call the Taylor County Sheriffs Crimestopper number, 1-800-432-4386. Callers can remain anonymous.
Funeral services for Boyd Novinger were held Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2 p.m. at the Novinger-Taylor Funeral Home in Bedford. Burial was at Fairview Cemetery. A memorial has been established in his name.
Boyd George Novinger, son of Fred Schultz Novinger and Sylvia Belle Bloom Novinger was born at New Market, Iowa November 19, 1920.
He lived in New Market and grew to maturity in the New Market area where he attended the public school. On March 17, 1944 he was united in marriage to Wilma Doris Shum and they lived in San Diego, California.
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1941 to 1947, serving aboard the U.S.S. Honolulu in the South Pacific, receiving the Navy Unit Commendation Medal.
Following his military service, he and Wilma returned to Bedford where he joined her parents in the funeral business.
To this union, one child was born, Christy Lu Novinger Taylor.
He served the community of Bedford as a funeral director for 50 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and one grandson, Benjamin Lee.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Christy and husband Keith of Bedford, grandchildren B.K., Mark, Sam, Kevin, Debra, Rhonda, Tony and Chester; six great grandchildren; one aunt, Nora Bloom Morris of Bedford; brother Gordon and wife Mary of San Bernardino, CA, sister, Shirley Mitchiner of San Bernardino, CA, four nephews and numerous cousins.
He was a member of John F. Hardin Post 164, Bedford American Legion, Taylor Lodge #156 AF & AM, VFW Post 11443, Bedford United Methodist Church.

Frank Novinger Dies At Hamburg
Frank [lin Pierce] Novinger, 88, father of Wilbur [Henry] Novinger of Bedford, died in a Hamburg, Iowa hospital Monday. The funeral services were held in Shenandoah Wednesday afternoon.
For many years, Mr. Novinger was a farmer in the Sidney community, and at one time was a resident of Bedford for a few years. His wife [Ora Belle Towne] died eleven years ago and since that time he had made his home with his children, and for the most part with a daughter at Hamburg.
The surviving children are Mrs. Mildred Ballinger of Hamburg; Roy [Frank] Novinger of Julesburg, Colo.; Fred [Shultz] Novinger of San Jose, Calif.; C. [lifford] C. Novinger of Shenandoah; Wilbur [Henry] Novinger of Bedford; Mrs. Earl Travis [Gertrude Alice] of Clarinda. Boyd Novinger of Bedford is a grandson of the deceased.

Leontine C. [reighton] Novinger, 90, a 46 year resident of San Bernardino, died on April 30, 1985 in San Bernardino.
She was born in Sanford, Florida on June 8, 1894 and was a homemaker and a Protestant. She was a former member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Navy Mothers Club.
Mrs. Novinger is survived by daughter, Shirley Mitchiner of San Bernardino; sons, Gordon Novinger of San Bernardino and Boyd [George] Novinger of Bedford, Iowa; grandchildren, Michael and Steven Palmer and Bradley, Jeffery and Christy Novinger; great grandchild, Brian Palmer.

Last Rites For Neva Novinger, 83
Services were held January 22, 1984 for Neva Novinger, 83, at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford, Iowa, officiated by Rev. Carl Cummings. Interment was in Memory Cemetery, New Market. Mrs. Novinger died January 19, 1984 at Bergen Mercy Hospital in Omaha, Ne.
Neva O'Dell, daughter of Lester O'Dell and May Fitch O'Dell, was born east of New Market in Taylor County Iowa July 5, 1900. She grew to maturity in the community where she was born where she attended the rural school, Mason Number one; three years at New Market High School and one year at Bedford High School, where she was graduated in the class of 1919. Later she attended Chicago Art Institute in Chicago, Illinois.
On January 14, 1926 she was united in marriage to Wilbur [Henry] Novinger at Creston, Iowa and most of their married life was lived on their farm in Taylor County.
Three children were born to bless their home and to share their love: John, Helen [Irene] and Louise [Jeanne]. She gave willingly of her time and effort as a housewife, a homemaker and mother, friend and neighbor.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur [Henry] Novinger who died October 19, 1963; her parents and a brother, Bruce O'Dell.
Left to cherish her memory are her three children and families: John B. Novinger and his wife Phyllis [Barrett] of Shenandoah, Iowa; Helen [Irene] Clayton and her husband Orie [Lee] of Clarinda, Iowa; Louise [Jeanne] Merkle and her husband Richard of Oakland, Iowa; eleven grandchildren; six great grandchildren; a sister Helen Cummings of Bedford and a brother Herman O'Dell of New Market, Iowa and other relatives and friends.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church and New Market Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star.
Her family will remember her as a kind and considerate person and she will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Funeral services for Wilbur H. [enry] Novinger were conducted Tuesday, Oct. 22, 1963 by Rev. J. Milton Kinney from Shum-Novinger Funeral Home, 708 Madison Street and burial in Memory Cemetery at New Market, Iowa.

Wilbur H. [enry] Novinger, youngest son of Frank [lin] and Ora [Belle Towne] Novinger was born in Fremont County, near Bartlett, Iowa, April 11, 1899, and passed away October 19, 1963 at the Municipal hospital in Clarinda, Iowa, at the age of 64 years, 6 months and 8 days.
With the exception of a few years spent in Missouri during his youth, his entire life was lived in southwest Iowa.
He was married January 14, 1926 to Neva OÕDell at the Methodist Parsonage in Gravity, Iowa, and to them three children were born and continue to bless their home.
He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Neva, one son, John B. Novinger and wife Phyllis [Barrett] of Shenandoah; two daughters, Helen [Irene] Clayton and husband Orie [Lee] of Clarinda, Louise [Jeanne] Merkle and husband, Richard of Oakland, Iowa; ten grandchildren, Helen Louise Novinger, John Wilbur Novinger and Ross Novinger, Sally Clayton, Julie, Molly and Mary Clayton, Cynthia [Louise] Merkle, Rickey and Steve Merkle, two sisters, Gertrude [Alice] Travis of Clarinda and Mildred Ballinger of Hamburg; two brothers, Cliff Novinger of Denison, Iowa and Fred Novinger of San Bernardino, Calif.; several nieces and nephews whom he loved as his own and a host of friends and neighbors.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Julia OÕBrien and one brother, Roy Novinger.
He was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints of Shenandoah, Iowa, and the Masonic Lodge of New Market, Iowa. Wilbur followed the occupation of a farmer and he loved nature and the out-of-doors as God created it.

Mrs. M. O'Dell Services Today
Funeral services for Mrs. Martha [May Damewood] (Elmer) O'Dell, long time Taylor county resident, will be held today (Thursday) at 2:00 p.m. at the State street Shum-Novinger Funeral Home. Mrs. OÕDell died at her home west of Bedford last Tuesday morning. She observed her 94th birthday last Sunday.
Mrs. O'Dell's children, who survive are: two daughters, Mrs. Ida Morris, Corydon, Mrs. Alta Parsons, Conway; four sons, Russell, Lebanon, Mo., Al, Bedford, Delbert, Malvern and Vern at home.

Funeral services for Earl Custer Travis, 90, of Clarinda, held March 9 at Walker Funeral Home in Clarinda, were conducted by Carl Cummings. Mr. Travis died in Clarinda on March 6, 1972. Interment was at Dallas Center Cemetery, near New Market.
Earl C. [uster] Travis was born on October 19, 1881, near Sidney, Iowa, the eldest son of Thomas R. [iley] and Cicily [Island Page] Travis. His early life was spent in Fremont County where he was united in marriage on March 29, 1906, in Hamburg, Iowa, to Gertrude Alice Novinger. To them four children were born.
Earl farmed at Sidney and at New Market, Iowa, until 1931. At that time he moved his family to Clarinda, Iowa, where he worked as a freight agent for the Burlington Railroad until his retirement in 1946.
Earl was preceded in death by his daughter, Leta [Irene] Mankle, and two sisters, Nell Omer and Edith Travis.
He is survived by his wife, Gertrude, of Clarinda; sons Merle of Bedford, and [Earl] Duane and Kenneth [Rex], both of Clarinda; a sister Grace Torrence of Glenwood; a brother Perry of Sidney; four grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mrs. Earl (Gertrude) Travis, 88, of Clarinda, held December 14 at Walker Funeral Home in Clarinda, were conducted by Elder John R. Topham. Mrs. Travis died December 11, 1973 in the Municipal Hospital in Clarinda. Interment was at Dallas Center Cemetery, New Market.
Gertrude Alice Novinger was born April 25, 1885, at Belleville, Kansas. She was the second daughter of Franklin P. [ierce] and Ora Belle [Towne] Novinger, and her early life was spent in Fremont County.
She was married to Earl C. [uster] Travis on March 29, 1906, at Hamburg, Iowa, and one daughter and three sons were born to them.
During most of their early marriage, Gert and Earl lived at New Market, Iowa. In 1931, they moved to Clarinda.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Earl, her daughter, Leta [Irene] Mankle, her parents, a sister, Juliet O'Brien, and four brothers, Roy, Cliff, Fred and Wilbur Novinger.
She is survived by her sons, Merle of Bedford and [Earl] Duane and Kenneth [Rex], both of Clarinda; a sister, Mildred Ballinger, of Hamburg, Iowa; four grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren.

Kenneth Travis, 58, Last Rites Were Held August 9
Graveside services for Kenneth Rex Travis, 58, of Clarinda, were held August 9 at Dallas Center Cemetery. Mr. Travis died August 7 in Leon, Ia.
Kenneth Rex Travis was born on October 20, 1919, at New Market, Taylor County, Iowa. He was the fourth child and third son of Earl Custer and Gertrude Alice Novinger Travis. He grew to maturity in New Market where he attended public school, and after his military service returned to Clarinda, Iowa, where he made his home.
Kenneth served as a machine gunner during World War II in the United States Army, Company M, 169th Infantry. He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Campaign Medal and received an honorable discharge on October 27, 1943.
Preceding Kenneth in death were his mother and father, and a sister Leta [Irene] Mankle.
He leaves two brothers, Merle of Bedford, Iowa, and Earl Duane of Clarinda, Iowa; one niece; three nephews; and nine grandnieces and nephews, and numerous cousins.
Kenneth was a kind and considerate man.
