MORTUARY.
An Estimable Old Lady of Bedford Passes Away After a Long and Useful Life.
Died, at her residence in southwest Bedford, Iowa, Monday, February 3rd, 1902, at 9:30 o'clock a. m., Mrs. Elizabeth [VanCleef] Clark, aged 78 years, 9 months and 24 days.
Funeral services were held at the residence Wednesday, February 5th, at 2 o'clock p. m., conducted by Rev. T. J. Ream.
Interment in the Bedford cemetery.
Deceased was a woman held in high esteem by all who knew her, and her acquaintance was quite extensive, being an old resident of this city. She was one of those rare beings who rejoiced with those who rejoiced and wept with those who wept, her heart was always open to the sick and afflicted and her life was a beautiful stream flowing tranquilly on through sunshine and in shade until it finally disappeared over the border of time into eternity.
Elizabeth Clark had been a consistent member of the M. E. Church for many years, finding joy in life and consolation in death.
Her husband, John Clark, survives her. They have been married for a period of fifty-eight years, and residents of Bedford since 1857. There were eight children born to this family, six of whom are living and were present at the funeral.
The surviving children are: Mrs. Martha [Jane] Arlan, Ponca City, Oklahoma; Mrs. [Johanna] Belle Nickel, Clearfield; Mrs. Mary Allen, Bedford; Miss [Alice] Anna Clark, Bedford; Reed Clark, Bedford; W. [illiam] W. Clark, Atchison, Kansas.

And thus has a true mother in Israel gone to her just reward in a brighter and better world. Her life was one long period of usefulness and love to those around and about her. She will be sadly missed by many. She was a member of the M. E. church, and her life was a Christian one, having faith in her Redeemer. John Clark, her husband, is left to mourn a loving wife and companion. For 58 years this old couple had gone through sunshine and shadow together, bearing one another's burdens. Miss Anna Clark.
Died, Tuesday, Nov. 6, at Ensworth hospital at St. Joseph, Miss [Alice] Anna Clark, aged 45 years and 9 months.
The deceased was born in Taylor County and has for years been an invalid. About three weeks ago she went to St. Joseph to have an operation performed for the removal of a tumor, the cause of her continued ill health. The operation was successful and it was thought that she would recover but her weakened system did not leave her with vitality sufficient to rally from the shock to the nervous system and the result was as stated.
She has been making her home with her father in the southwest part of town. Her disposition has been that possessed only by a true Christian, and her suffering has been born with uncomplaining fortitude. She was a member of the M. E. church and while her physical condition prevented her active work there was no member more interested and loyal than she.
She leaves her father, John Clark, two sisters, Mrs. [Charles] Freeman [Fremont] Allen [Mary] and Mrs [Johanna Belle] Nickle, and a brother, Reed Clark, all of Bedford, a sister, Mrs. [Martha Jane] Arlin, of Ponca City, Okl., and a brother, W.[illiam] W. Clark, of Atchison, Kas.

Died Away From Home.
Miss [Alice] Anna Clark died at Ensworth hospital in St. Joseph Tuesday evening and her remains were shipped to Bedford, arriving on the noon train yesterday.
The deceased was the daughter of John Clark, one of the old settlers of Bedford, and she was born and grew to womanhood here. She lived with her father in the southwest part of the city, and ever since the death of her mother, for the past six years she has cared for her father of the home, comforted him and catered to his needs. To him, this second death will be doubly sorrowful, and to the many friends who admired and esteemed her [for] they knew her true worth, it brings poignant grief and lasting sorrow.
For some time Miss Clark had not been in good health and recently she has grown so much worse that two weeks ago doctors decided that a surgical operation offered the only hope of prolonging her life. She went to St. Joseph two weeks ago and on the Friday following the operation was performed. Weakened as she was by illness, her nervous system wrought to the highest tension, she was unable to withstand the shock of the operation, and grew worse rapidly until the end came ten days later.
The funeral services will be held today at 2 p. m. at the home in southwest Bedford, conducted by Revs. Thompson and [word missing]. Interment will be made at Fairview.

Obituary.
John Clark was born in Pennsylvania May 7, 1824, and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. C. [harles] F. [remont] Allen, in Bedford, Iowa, October 22, 1908, at the age of 84 years, 5 months and 15 days. His father died when he was a small child. His widowed mother moved with her two children, John and his sister, to Indiana where she endeavored in this new country to make a living for herself and her little ones. John assisted her in these efforts as a faithful son. On October 27, 1842 he was married to Elizabeth VanCleef. Eight children were born to them, three of whom are deceased. The living are W. [illiam] W. Clark of Atchison Kansas, Martha J. [ane] Arlin of Ponca City, Oklahoma, Belle Nichols, Reid [Reed] Clark and Mary E. Allen of Bedford.
Although Mr. Clark had a large family, he heard the call of his country and volunteered his service to her in the darkest hour of her history. He was mustered into Company F, 29th Iowa on August 1, 1862. He served until January 1, 1864, when he received an honorable discharge and was mustered out on account of disability caused by sunstroke.
In early manhood Brother Clark was converted and united with the Methodist Episcopal church, of which he remained a faithful member to the end. For several years by reason of age and infirmities he has been confined to the home, at times being almost totally blind. In his old age and infirmity he has in recent years made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Allen. She and other members of the family have tenderly cared for their beloved father with the same tenderness that he cared for his. Clark was waiting the MasterÕs summons. He had on the wedding garment and was ready for the marriage supper of the Lamb. We remain for a time in this world of sorrow; Father Clark has entered into his heritage and knows of the joys of the Great Reward for the faithful in Heaven.
The funeral was conducted from the C. [harles] F. [remont] Allen residence on Saturday at 2 p. m. by Rev. Dudley assisted by Rev. Hendrickson. D.

Free Allen Dies At Home Sunday
C. [harles] F. [remont] Allen, 83, better known in Bedford and community as Free Allen, died at his home in southwest Bedford Sunday, Feb. 4 after having been in failing health for several years. Mrs. Allen [Mary E. Clark] died several years ago.
The funeral services were held at the Wetmore Funeral Home Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. C. Max Buck of the Church of Christ. Burial was in the Fairview cemetery.

Funeral services were held Tuesday from the Wetmore Funeral Home for Freeman Allen [Charles Fremont], 84, longtime resident, who died Sunday at his home in southwest Bedford.
Surviving is a niece, Cecil Nickle of Bedford, together with other nieces in Kansas. His wife [Mary E. Clark] preceded him in death.
Rites were conducted by the Rev. C. M. Buck. Interment was in Fairview cemetery.

Mrs. L. L. Terrell
[Nancy Elizabeth] Lizzie Hutson was born near Bedford, Ia., on the 2nd day of November 1859, and passed away at her home in Bedford on the 28th day of Sept. 1927, at the age of 67 years, 10 months and 28 days. She was united with the local Church of Christ at the early age of 15 years and has been a member of that organization for more than half a century. She was united in marriage to L.[ycurgus] L. [awrence] Terrell at Concordia, Kas., on the 29th day of Sept. 1879. To this union was born four children, Charles S. [umner] Terrell who lives on his farm east of Bedford, Fred M. [anson] Terrell of Los Angeles, Calif., and two children who died in infancy.
Funeral services were held last Friday afternoon at the local Church of Christ, conducted by Rev. Fred Coley. Interment was made in the Bedford cemetery.

L. L. Terrill Dies At Bedford Home
L. [ycurgus] L. [awrence] Terrell, 86, died at his home in west Bedford about 5 oÕclock Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 4.
The funeral services were held at the Walker & Shum Funeral Home this afternoon, conducted by Rev. Ben W. Sinderson. Burial was in the Bedford cemetery.
He is survived by two sons, Charles [Sumner] Terrell of Bedford and Fred [Manson] Terrell of Denver, Colo.

Mr. L. L. Terrell
Lycurgus L. [awrence] Terrell, generally known as Craig Terrell among his friends, an aged resident of Bedford, died at his home Tuesday, Feb. 4, 1941 at the age of 87 years. He was a victim of asthma and has been in declining health during the past few years.
Mr. Terrell was born in Clinton County, Ohio June 12, 1854. He moved to Douglas County, Kansas, when he was ten years old and the next year he took up residence in Johnson County, Kansas. He came to this community in May 1875, where he had since resided.
Mr. Terrell and Miss Lizzie [Nancy Elizabeth] Hutson were married at Concordia, Kansas, Sept. 29, 1879. To them were born four children, two of whom died in infancy. A son, Charles [Sumner] Terrell and family, has lived with and cared for Mr. Terrell during the past four years. Another son, Fred [Manson] Terrell lives in Denver, Colo.
He is also survived by two sisters: Mrs. Emma Grimm and Mrs. Mattie Olphant of Olathe, Kans.; and two brothers, Frank Terrell of Olathe, Kansas and Horace Terrell of Gardner, Kan. These four brothers and sisters are all past 80 years of age. Other relatives include several nephews and nieces, six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Mrs. Terrell died 13 years ago.
After eighteen years of farming near Bedford, Mr. Terrell moved to town and entered the Real Estate and Insurance business. He continued this relationship until 1935. He had been a member of the Bedford Christian Church since 1895.
Craig Terrell was an honest, hard working man and an honored citizen of this community.
The funeral services were held at the Walker & Shum Funeral Home Thursday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Ben Sinderson. Burial was in the Bedford cemetery.

Charles S. Terrell Rites Here Sunday
Funeral services for Charles S. [umner] Terrell, who died in the Municipal hospital, Clarinda, Friday, May 2, were held at the Wetmore Funeral Home, Sunday, May 4, at 2 p.m. Kenneth Miller was in charge of the services. Interment was in the Lexington cemetery, with the Odd Fellows lodge in charge.
Charles Sumner Terrell, son of the late L. [ycurgus] L. [awrence] and Nancy Elizabeth Hutson Terrell was born Dec. 2, 1880 at Bedford, Iowa and died May 2, 1958 at the age of 77 years and 5 months.
He was united in marriage to Olive L. [ea] Hanson Oct. 28, 1903. To this union, seven children were born. One daughter, Alice Edna, preceded him in death. Two brothers and one sister are deceased.
Surviving are his wife, four daughters and two sons: [Gladys] Mayre, Mrs. Paul Harland, Clarinda; Jean [Olive], Mrs. Leonard Horton, Lincoln, Nebr.; [Myrtle] Mildred, Mrs. Albert Strand, Salt Lake City, Utah; Doris [Dorothy], Mrs. Wilber Young, Bedford; [Charles] Kendall Terrell, Bedford; Ivan [Alan] Terrell, Creston.
Also surviving are two daughters-in-law and four sons-in-law; 15 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Mr. Terrell was a member of the Presbyterian Church and Odd Fellows Lodge of Bedford.
He was engaged in farming east of Bedford until 1935 when he moved to town to establish a plumbing business, from which he has been retired for several years.
He was a devoted husband and father to the family he leaves, and one who took pride in being a good neighbor.

Fred Terrell, 55, Dies In Denver
Fred [Manson] Terrell, 55, died at his home in Denver, Colo, Friday, June 5, according to word received here by his brother, Charles Terrell. Burial was made at Denver.
Fred was a former resident of Bedford, being a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. L.[ycurgus] L. [awrence] Terrell. He was employed here for Willis and Hook in the hardware and later as a clerk in the post office under Postmaster J. J. Clark, before moving west in 1908. He operated a shoe shop in Denver at the time of his death.
He is survived by his wife and by his brother and family of Bedford.

Rites Held Tuesday For Mrs. Terrell
Funeral services for Mrs. Charles (Olive) Terrell, 82, lifetime Taylor County resident, were held April 25 at the Madison Street Shum-Novinger Funeral Home, with Rev. John D. Kerr officiating. Mrs. Terrell died April 22 at Pearl Terrace Manor in Bedford. Interment was at Lexington Cemetery, Bedford.
Olive Lea Hanson, daughter of Monroe Hanson and Anna Hosford Hanson, was born in Hamilton, Ill., on April 21, 1885. At the age of seven, she came with her parents, brother Roy and sister Myrtle, to the Conway community, where her father was engaged in farming and the lumber business. Later they moved to Bedford.
On Oct. 28, 1903 she was united in marriage to Charles [Sumner] Terrell of Bedford. To this union were born seven children.
Her husband and one daughter, Alice [Edna], preceded her in death.
She leaves with memories her two sons, [Charles] Kendall and Ivan [Alan] of Bedford; four daughters, Marie [Mayre] Harland of Clarinda; Jean Horton of Lincoln, Nebr.; Mildred Strand of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Doris Mothershead of Gravity; nine grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; one daughter-in-law; four sons-in-law; a niece and nephew of Riverside, Calif., and one cousin and family of Lenox.
Mrs. Terrell was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Bedford for over 50 years.

Alice Terrell Dies In St. Joseph, Mo.
Miss Alice [Edna] Terrell, 23, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles [Sumner] Terrell of Bedford, died in the hospital at St. Joseph Wednesday where she had been in an iron lung the past few days, the victim of infantile paralysis.
Burial was made in Lexington cemetery this afternoon at 2 o'clock, with short services at the grave conducted by Rev. Stanley Schlick.

Miss Alice Terrell
Alice Edna Terrell, daughter of Charles S.[umner] and Olive L. [ea Hanson] Terrell, was born near Bedford, Iowa, on August 15, 1917 and died, in a St. Joseph, Mo., hospital, Oct. 16, 1940 at the age of 23 years, 2 months and one day.
Burial services were held at the Lexington cemetery Thursday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Stanley Schlick.
She is survived by her parents; two brothers, Kendall Terrell and Ivan Terrell, both of Bedford; and four sisters, Mrs. Jean Horton of Norfolk, Nebr., Mrs. Doris Young of Bedford, Mrs. Mayre Harland of Clarinda and Mrs. Mildred Strand of Green River, Wyo.
Also by her paternal grandfather, L. [ycurgus] L. [awrence] Terrell of Bedford; her maternal grandmother, Mrs. Anna E. Hanson of St. Joseph; an aunt, Miss Myrtle Hanson of St. Joseph; and two uncles, Roy Hanson of St. Joseph and Fred Terrell of Denver, Colo.
Nearly all of her life was spent in Bedford and community and she will be greatly missed by her friends and loved ones.

Polio Fatal to Alice Terrill
Iron Lung Fails to Save Bedford Girl's Life.
Infantile paralysis Wednesday claimed its first Taylor County victim in the person of Alice [Edna] Terrill [Terrell], 22, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Terrill [Terrell] of Bedford.
First stricken on Wednesday, October 9, the girl was rushed to a St. Joseph, Missouri isolation hospital Friday. Monday she was placed in an iron respirator in the hope of saving her life.
Her father said she was completely paralyzed with the exception of her speech and one arm.
Because of the seriousness of the disease, private funeral services were held this afternoon at the grave in Lexington cemetery.
Another case, that of Janie Stevenson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Stevenson, Jr., of Clearfield was reported late last week. The girl's condition was reported to be ÒimprovedÓ early this week.

Rites Held Here May 8 for Kendall Terrell
Funeral services for Charles Kendall Terrell, 64, of Bedford were held May 8 at the Bedford Presbyterian Church with Rev. Ray McCain officiating. Mr. Terrell died at Clarinda Municipal Hospital following an illness of six weeks. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford.
Charles Kendall Terrell, son of Charles S. [umner] and Olive [Lea] Hanson Terrell, was born July 24, 1906 in Bedford. He attended the rural schools in Taylor County.
On September 22, 1934 he was married to Mabel Louise Driftmier. One daughter, Judith Ann, was born June 19, 1938.
Terrell joined the East Mission Baptist Church and later transferred his membership to the Bedford Presbyterian Church.
For a short period of time he was a barber in St. Joseph, Mo., and then returned to Bedford to go into the plumbing and heating business with his father.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and was an active in the Bedford Lions Club. His main interest was his family and his home.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Alice [Edna].
Survivors include his wife, Mabel; daughter Judith Terrell Batton, Laramie, Wyo.; son-in-law, William D. Batton; grandchildren, David Charles Batton, Alice Ann Batton, Michael Patrick Batton; brother, Ivan A, Terrell; sisters, Mayre Harland, Jean Horton, Mildred Strand and Doris Mothershead.
