Delbert Gibson
Funeral services for Delbert Clair Gibson, 92, of Gravity, held March 20 at Walker Funeral Home in Clarinda, were conducted by Carl Cummings. Mr. Gibson died March 17, 1973 at Clarinda, Iowa. Interment was at the Clarinda Cemetery.
Delbert Clair Gibson, son of John W. [ilson] and Anna [Elgin] Gibson, was born near Blanchard, Iowa, May 12, 1880. He attended school near Blanchard and graduated from Amity College at College Springs.
He was united in marriage to Roxie Pearce of Blanchard, January 20, 1904. To this union were born three children; Evelyn Genevieve, John Delbert and Leta Irene. Their early married life was spent on a farm near Blanchard; then they moved to Neola, Iowa, where he was employed by the Milwaukee Railroad and Cooper Stores. Later they moved to College Springs where he was engaged in the road construction and garage business. In 1941, they moved to Clarinda, where he was employed as the night general at the Mental Health Institute until he retired to Gravity.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Roxie and daughter, Evelyn Ross.
He is survived by his son, John Delbert; daughter, Leta Irene Snyder; two sisters, Mrs. Letha Parsons and Mrs. Rena Lowry; 12 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; and a host of friends.
His jovial, congenial nature, with a great sense of humor and wisdom, made him a sincere friend to many. People of all ages and from all walks of life who came to know him, readily found his keen wit and sharp memory a true inspiration.
He was a kind and loving husband and father and he will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Mrs. Luther Burns Last Rites Held October 24
Funeral services for Mrs. Luther (Sara Lucile) Burns, 55, of Liberty, Mo., formerly of Bedford, were held October 24 at the Fry Chapel, Kearney. Mrs. Burns died October 21 in a Kansas City hospital.
Mrs. Burns was a Baptist. She leaves her husband, Luther, Bedford; her mother, Mrs. Pearl Cole, Kansas City, Kans.; two brothers. Glen Cole, Sun City, Calif., and Dale Cole, Scottsdale, Ariz.; two sisters, Mrs. Lois Fisher of the home; Mrs. Joyce Myers of Kansas City. Her mother-in-law, Mrs. Norma Burns, Bedford, and three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Harold Brown and Mrs. Margaret Burns, Bedford, and Mrs. Wilson Longfellow of Lenox, attended the services.

Clyde Jeter, 55
Funeral services for Clyde Elvin Jeter, 55, of Bedford, were held Mon., June 18 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford conducted by Carl Cummings. Mr. Jeter died June 15, 1973 at Afton, Iowa. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford.
Clyde Elvin Jeter, son of Fred Elmer Jeter and Cora E. Jones Jeter, was born December 16, 1917, at Hatfield in Harrison County, Missouri. He grew to adulthood in the community near Hatfield, Mo. where he attended the public schools and was a part of the various community activities.
Later, while residing in Mt. Ayr, Iowa, he was inducted into the U. S. Army and served during World War II. Following his army service he resided in the Mt. Ayr and Kellerton areas until he moved to Bedford.
He was united in marriage to Mary Wood Napier who preceded him in death October 1, 1969. His father died July 29, 1965.
Clyde operated the Standard Oil and Skelly Service Station in Bedford and served on the police force.
During his last years he spent considerable time in the Veterans Hospitals at Omaha and Des Moines.
He leaves a step daughter, Patricia Epperson and her son, Jeffery, of Omaha, Nebraska; his mother, Corda Jeter, who resides in Clearfield; five brothers and three sisters: Eldon W. Jeter of Clearfield, Ardith Jeter of South Milwaukee, Wisc., Paul Jeter of Wichita, Kans., Jim Jeter of Tarkio, Mo. and Ray Jeter of Tulsa, Okla.; Mrs. Wanda McGahuey of Mt. Ayr, Mrs. Faye Sickels of Mt. Ayr and Mrs. Virginia Sharp of Cresco, Ia.; uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
He was a member of the American Legion and Lotts Grove Baptist Church in Harrison County, Mo.

Grace Wheelen, 88 Final Rites Held February 24
Funeral services for Mrs. Chester A. (Grace) Wheelen, 88, of Maloy, were held February 24 at the United Methodist Church in Mt. Ayr with the Rev. Jerrold Swinton officiating. Mrs. Wheelen died February 22, 1973, in Ringgold County Hospital. Interment was at the Platteville Cemetery.
Grace Estella Wheelen, daughter of Mary Ellen [Skinner] and Elijah [Keasey] Harsh, was born March 7, 1884, near Siam, in Taylor County.
She moved with her parents and family to a farm in Jackson Township in Taylor County, where she spent her girlhood and attended Science Ridge School near her home.
She was united in marriage with Chester A. [rthur] Wheelen on April 1, 1908, in her parents' home and of this union were born four sons and one daughter. Excepting for a brief time spent near Dunlap, Iowa, their home was established in Gay township, Taylor County.
Mrs. Wheelen had been a member of the Methodist Church since 1910. During her lifetime she served as pianist and organist for the various churches she attended.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Maxine and LaVerne Worthington of Mt. Ayr; a son, Earl Wheelen, and a daughter - in - law, Mrs. Emeral Wheelen [Pauline Long Bell], of Maloy; her grandchildren, Mrs. Charles (Jane) Braby of Maloy, Linda Worthington of New York City, Loretta Worthington of Clarinda, and Stephen Worthington of Mt. Ayr, her step grandchildren, Roger Bell of Atlantic, and Richard Bell of Springfield, Mo.; nine great-grandchildren and a host of friends and relatives.

Ralph A. Rutledge Last Rites Held July 17
Funeral services for Ralph A. Rutledge, 75, of Nebraska City, Nebr., a native of Sharpsburg,
Iowa, were held Tues., July 17, at the Sharpsburg United Presbyterian Church conducted by
Rev. Wallace Nelson. Mr. Rutledge died in his home in Nebraska City July 14, 1973. Masonic services were conducted by Tremont Lodge No. 343 A.P. & A.M. of Lenox, Iowa, and the Presentation of the Flag was made by Moore-Rutledge Legion No. 578 of Gravity, Iowa, at Lexington Cemetery northeast of Bedford.
Ralph A. Rutledge was born in Sharpsburg September 24, 1897, the son of Mary Ellen Fisher and Abe Rutledge.
As a member of the famous 42nd (Rainbow) Division he earned the Purple Heart while serving with the infantry in World War I.
Reared in Sharpsburg, he served for many years as the town's postmaster and prior to his retirement served as rural mail carrier.
On June 3, 1929, he was united in marriage to Lela C. Kaisand. They made their home in Sharpsburg until November 1972, when they moved to 2112 Third Avenue, Nebraska City, Nebr.
He was a 50-year member of the Moore-Rutledge American Legion Post in Gravity and the Masonic Lodge. He was also a member of the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine. Mr. Rutledge was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Sharpsburg.
A sister, Eva Jordon, preceded him in death.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Lela; his daughter, Jeanette Hoskins, and four grandchildren, Jodene, Randall, Susan and Debra Hoskins; four sisters: Fay Day, Helen Clayton, Harriet Thornell and Allene Baldwin; and a brother, George Rutledge; a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Many out-of-town relatives and friends attended the services.
Those wishing to revere his memory may give memorials to the Presbyterian Church at Sharpsburg.

Rutledge rites will be Tuesday
Funeral services will be 2 p. m. Tuesday at the Sharpsburg Presbyterian Church in Sharpsburg, Iowa for Ralph A. Rutledge, 75, who died Saturday afternoon at his home at 2112 Third Avenue in Nebraska City. Masonic services will be conducted by the Lenox, Iowa Tremont Lodge 343.
Burial will be at Lexington cemetery in Bedford, Iowa. The body was removed from the Gude mortuary in Nebraska City to the Shum-Novinger Funeral Home at Bedford.
Mr. Rutledge was born September 24, 1897, at Sharpsburg, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Abe Rutledge. He married Lela Kaisand on June 3, 1929, in Corydon, Iowa. A retired mail carrier and postmaster, he moved to Nebraska City from Sharpsburg in November 1972.
He is survived by his wife, a daughter, Mrs. Leonard (Jeanette) Hoskins, Nebraska City; grandchildren Jodene, Randall, Susan and Debra, four sisters, Mrs. Faye R. Day, Des Moines, Iowa; Mrs. Kent Thornell, Clarinda, Iowa, Mrs. Ralph Clayton, Bedford, Iowa; and Mrs. Leo Baldwin, Pueblo, Colorado; and a brother, George F. Rutledge of Omaha.
He was preceded by a sister, Mrs. D. S. Jordan.
During World War I, he served in the Army in Europe. He was a member of the Sharpsburg Presbyterian church, the American Legion, Shrine Za-Ga-Zig, the Masonic Lodge of Lennox, Iowa and Order of Eastern Star.
Memorials are suggested to the Sharpsburg Presbyterian Church at Sharpsburg, Iowa.

Ralph A. Rutledge – Funeral services were held Tuesday at United Presbyterian church at Sharpsburg, Iowa, for Ralph A. Rutledge who died July 14 at his home in Nebraska City. The Rev. Wallace Nelson officiated.
Burial was in the Lexington cemetery at Bedford, Iowa.
Pallbearers were Gus Kaisand of Lynnville, Iowa, Merle Sparks of Newton, Iowa, Don Hasselbrink of Grinnell, Iowa, and Bill Beach, Paul Oxley and Donald Smith, all of Sharpsburg.
The Tremont Masonic Lodge of Lenox, Iowa, participated in the services. The Moore-Rutledge Legion post, of which Mr. Rutledge was a member, gave the presentation of the flag.
Attending the services included the Leonard E. Hoskins family, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard F. Hoskins and Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Phillips, all of Nebraska City, and Mrs. Gary Barrett of Hamburg, Iowa. Others attending were from Colorado, Texas, Idaho, Missouri and Iowa.

James Richardson Killed in Auto Accident Nov. 10
James Douglas Richardson, 22, former Bedfordite, of Knoxville, Ia., was killed in a one-car accident four miles west of Knoxville November 10. The car he was driving went out of control, swerved, and came to rest on its top. Jim is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Richardson of Troy, Kansas, who formerly lived at 908 Central, Bedford.
Funeral services were held November 13 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford with Rev. Robert Truitt officiating. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford.
He is survived by his wife and two children.

Mrs. C. W. Steward
Funeral services for Mrs. C. W. (Charlotte) Steward, 68, of Bedford, wife of Dr. C. [harles] W. [illiam] Steward, Bedford dentist, were held Tues., Feb. 13, at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford with Carl Cummings and Rev. Robert Truitt officiating. Mrs. Steward died February 8, 1973 in Harlingen, Texas. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford.
Charlotte Winifred Garwood, daughter of F. [oster] J. and Charlotte [Louisa] Beems Garwood, was born September 11, 1904 at Davenport, Iowa.
She moved with her parents when four years of age to a farm near Colfax, Iowa, where she grew to adulthood. She was a graduate of the University of Iowa in the class of 1928.
On September 29, 1928, she was united in marriage to Dr. C. [harles] W. [illiam] Steward at the home of the bride's parents at Colfax, Iowa. They immediately moved to Bedford where her husband was in dental practice and here they have continued to reside.
Three sons were born to bless their home and to share the love of their parents; Bill, Bob and Dick.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Jeanette, who died in 1926. Left to cherish her memory are her husband. Dr. C. [harles] W. [illiam] Steward of the home; her sons: Bill and his wife, Inge, their two children, Michael and Michele of Dumont, N. J.; Bob and his wife, Vada, and children; Bob, Cindi, K.C., Lori, David and Bruce of Birmingham, Alabama; Dick and his wife, Donna, and children; Robbin and Brian of Elmhurst, Illinois; other relatives and a host of friends.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Order of Eastern Star, the P.E.O. Sisterhood and Sigma Kappa Sorority.
She was a kind and loving wife, mother, friend and neighbor, and she will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Mervin G. Safley Rites Held Oct. 2
Funeral services for Mervin Gilbert Safley, 92, of Hopkins were held October 2 at the First Christian Church in Hopkins with Rev. Fred Paxton officiating. Mr. Safley died September 29 at St. Francis Hospital, Maryville, Mo. Interment was at Long Branch Cemetery, at Gaynor.
He was a retired farmer and exhibitor of fine horses and Jersey cattle. He was a member of the First Christian Church, Hopkins.
Mervin Gilbert Safley was born July 14, 1881 at Tipton, Iowa, the eldest son of William A. and Belle Boyer Safley. He was first married in 1915 to Victoria Greenlee, who preceded him in death in May 1930.
On August 30, 1934 he was married to Mrs. Edna Florea.
He is also survived by one son, Harland Ingram Safley, and wife, Mary Lou, of Maryville; four grandchildren; three great grandchildren.

Esther B. John, 78 Dies in Des Moines
Funeral services for Mrs. Esther B. John, 78, of Des Moines long time Taylor County resident, were held August 15 at the Westover Funeral Home in Des Moines. Mrs. John died at Northwest Community Hospital August 13, after a lingering illness. She had been a resident of Riverview Manor Convalescent and Nursing Home in Des Moines the last 20 months. Interment was at the Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.
Esther Belle John, daughter of David Baker Van Camp and Abbigal Greta Ashton, was born January 27, 1895 near Rapid City, South Dakota. When a small child the family moved to Taylor County where she grew to adulthood.
On December 25, 1913 she was united in marriage to William Kinsey John and to this union were born three sons, Kenneth of Conway, Howard of Des Moines and Ivan of Ankeny.
They made their home in Taylor County and Rippey, Iowa until they moved to a farm near Waukee, from which they retired to their home in Des Moines 14 years ago.
She was preceded in death by her husband, who died in November 1970; her parents; two brothers and a great grandchild.
She is survived by her three sons and their wives; eight grandchildren, six great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Vera Warneke of Bedford and Mrs. Verta Loucks of Winslow, Ariz.; nieces; nephews; other relatives and many friends.

Vernon Helfenstein Dies in Des Moines
Funeral services for Vernon A. [rnold] Helfenstein, 81, of Des Moines, were held November 2 at Central Presbyterian Church. Mr. Helfenstein died October 30 of a heart ailment at his home, 201 S.W. Forty-second St. Interment was at Glendale Cemetery.
Mr. Helfenstein was superintendent of the Bedford schools from 1925 to 1929.
Born in Creston, Mr. Helfenstein lived in Des Moines for 23 years. He was a retired insurance agent affiliated with Northwestern National Life Insurance Co.
He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa fraternity, the American Legion and the Des Moines Men's Garden Club. He was a charter member of the Northwest Kiwanis Club and an elder at Central Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Eleanora; one son, Richard, of Browning, Mont.; and one half sister, Mrs. Freda Anderson, of Des Moines.

Bud Campbell, 31, Killed in Auto Mishap in Mo.
Funeral services for Charles F. [redrick] (Bud) Campbell, 31, of 5653 N. E. Tullis Ave., Kansas City, Mo., were held July 17 at the Whitaker Memorial Chapel in Kansas City with the Rev. Harry Higgins, pastor of the Claycomo Baptist Church, officiating. Mr. Campbell died July 15 as a result of an automobile accident on Highway 65, seven miles south of Princeton, Mo. Interment was at the Resthaven Memorial Gardens north of Trenton.
Bud was a son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar L. Winslow of Trenton, Mo., former Bedford residents.
Mr. Campbell was born Nov. 2, 1941, at Trenton, the son of Dale and Evelyn Oatman Campbell. He attended Trenton schools and was married on Sept. 18, 1965, to Miss Barbara [Ann] Winslow at the First Baptist church. They had lived in Kansas City the past three and one-half years, where he was a transport truck driver for Consolidated Freightways.
He served in the Army during the Korean conflict.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara; two daughters, Michelle and Christy, all of the home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dale Campbell, Spickard, Mo.; a sister, Carol, now Mrs. Gary Armstrong of St. Joseph; two aunts, and his father and mother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Winslow of Trenton.

Golda Clayton, 57 Last Rites Held September 6
Funeral services for Golda [Anna] Gray Clayton, 57, of Braddyville, Ia., were held September 6 at Walker Funeral Home in Clarinda conducted by Rev. John Clark. Mrs. Clayton died September 3 in her brother, Lovell's home in Braddyville where she had been cared for some time. Interment was in the Clarinda Cemetery.
Golda [Anna] Gray, daughter of the Walter Grays, was born near Hopkins May 3, 1916. Her parents moved later to south Missouri. In 1934 she came to her brother, Ernest Gray's, home near Siam.
She was married to Ellis [Vernon] Clayton of Siam June 4, 1938. They have made their home in Clarinda.
Mrs. Clayton united with the Christian Church in Clarinda and was a regular attendant and willing to work in any way she was needed.
Golda endeared herself to her family and friends by her kind and thoughtful ways.
She leaves besides her son, one daughter, Mrs. Dixie Baker, of Clarinda; a daughter-in-law, Joyce; four granddaughters; one grandson; four brothers, James of Shelbina, Ernest of near Siam, John of Kansas City and Charles of Clearmont, Mo.; three sisters, Mrs. Mary Manuel and Mrs. Nellie Shaw of Trenton, Mo. and Mrs. Lillie Peterson of Jetmore, Kans.

Harley Humphrey
Funeral services for Harley Fred Humphrey, 74, of Bedford, held September 8 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford, were conducted by Carl Cummings. Mr. Humphrey died September 5, 1973, at Veterans Hospital in Omaha where he had been a patient for about a month. American Legion Post No. 591, Conway, made the flag presentation at Lexington Cemetery, Bedford.
Harley Fred Humphrey, son of William Henry Humphrey and Mary Jane Cooper Humphrey, was born in Taylor County, Ia., December 10, 1898.
He lived in the Conway area as a lad and moved with his parents to Colorado in 1914.
He was united in marriage to Lura Wright in 1917 at Akron, Colorado, and to them one daughter, Violet, was born.
He was employed in Colorado as a mechanic and blacksmith and operated a milk route for several years. He served his country in World War I and also in World War II.
He returned to Taylor County in 1949 where he has since continued to reside.
He is survived by the daughter, Violet De La Vergne, Phoenix, Ariz.; three grandchildren; three great grandchildren; two brothers, Orville Humphrey, Bedford, and Kenneth Humphrey, Billings, Montana; three sisters, Lela Price, Bedford, Lula Kernen, Bedford, and Mary Nelson, Hamilton, Mont.; other relatives and friends.
He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Bess M. Fuller
Graveside services for Mrs. Ren. H. (Bess M) Fuller, 95, of Toledo, Ohio, a long time Bedford resident, were held November 16 at Fairview Cemetery in Bedford.
Bess M. Fuller, age 95, of 3905 E. Hillandale Road, Toledo died Wednesday, November 14, at Marigarde Nursing Care Center.
She was born at Bedford where she resided until 1958 when she moved to Toledo following the death of her husband, Ren [nie] H. [erman] Fuller.
She was a member of the First Methodist Church in Bedford and attended the Monroe St. Methodist Church in Toledo; a life member of Grand Chapter O.E.S., Iowa.
She is survived by her son, Fred; four grandchildren; and ten great grandchildren.
Mrs. Fred Fuller [Mary Isabelle Beetham], her daughter-in-law, and Mrs. T.J. Sandberg, granddaughter, both of Toledo, attended the services.

Harry A. Heggs, 90, Final Rites Held October 26
Funeral services for Harry A. [mbrus] Heggs, 90, of Bedford, were held October 26 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford with Carl Cummings officiating. Mr. Heggs died at Colonial Manor in Bedford October 23, 1973. Interment was at Rose Hill Cemetery, Blockton.
Harry A. [mbrus] Heggs, son of W. [illiam] R. [obinson] and Lily Dilly Heggs, was born November 2, 1882, at Beaconsfield, Iowa.
On September 11, 1911, he was united in marriage to Emma Kaepernik, at Sterling, Colorado.
To them were born three daughters and one son. They moved to Ringgold County, Iowa in 1923 and later to Taylor County, Iowa where he has since continued to reside.
Mr. Heggs was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a daughter, Edith Heggs Hughes, who passed away April 3, 1963 and a son, Gene Heggs, who died January 22, 1972. He was the last of his own family of three brothers and two sisters.
Left to cherish his memory are daughters: Olive Mumm and her husband, Edward Mumm, of Tampa, Florida, and Violet (Tomi) Heggs of Evergreen, Colorado; 10 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; nieces; nephews; other relatives and many friends.
He followed the occupation of a farmer until his retirement.
Mr. Heggs was a member of the Berea Church of Christ, Bedford.
He will be remembered as a kind and considerate father and grandfather, friend and neighbor, and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

James Knapple, 30, Rites Held Here October 9
Funeral services for James Garrison Knapple, 30, of Norman, Oklahoma, were held at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford Tues., Oct. 9, with Carl Cummings officiating. Mr. Knapple died in Norman September 27. Interment was at Hopkins (Mo.) Cemetery.
James Knapple, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Osborne of Clarinda, was a student at [the] University of Oklahoma.
