S. Bothel Dies In Denver, Colo.
S. [ylvester] Bothel, 86, died at his home in Denver, Colorado, Monday, following an operation for appendicitis, and funeral services were held there today.
Mr. Bothel, former resident of Taylor County, had been a resident of Denver for a number of years.
His daughter, Mrs. Geo. Jared [Hattie Grace] of near Bedford, attended the last rites.

Obituary – Sylvester Bothel
Sylvester Bothel was born in Knoxville, Illinois, August 1, 1857 and died at his home at 4350 Wolff Street in Denver, Colorado, on Monday, March 8, 1943, at the age of 86 years, 7 months and 7 days.
He came to Taylor County, Iowa, with his parents at the age of eighteen years, and was married on October 27, 1879 to [Florence] Josephine Marshall.
To them were born nine children: Clifford C. Bothel [Charles Clifford], Francis C. [arr] Bothel, Leland E. [arl] Bothel, Mrs. Bessie [Ann] Webster, Mrs. Amy [May] Burch, and Mrs. Helen Trumbo, all of Denver; Guy E. [dgar] Bothel and Mrs. Maud [e] Clayborn [Clayburn] of Julesburg, Colorado; and Mrs. [Hattie] Grace Jared of Bedford.
Mr. and Mrs. Bothel moved to Denver from Bedford in 1916 and spent the remainder of their lives there. Mrs. Bothel died Feb. 19, 1942.
He is survived by his nine children, all of whom were present for the last rites. Also by twenty-four grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.
Mr. Bothel united with the Baptist church in 1905 and always remained a faithful member.

Former Resident Dies In Chicago
Leland E. [arl] Bothel, a former resident of Bedford and Taylor County, died Thursday, April 6, at his home in Chicago. Last rites were held in Chicago Monday afternoon, April 10.
He grew to manhood in this community but spent most of his life in Denver, Colo., going to Chicago a few years ago to be near his daughter, Mrs. George Moustic. He was a brother of Mrs. George Jared [Hattie Grace] of Bedford.

Mrs. Fannie A. Burch
Mrs. Fannie A. Burch, wife of Levi B. Burch, of Byron, Ill., died at 9:35 o'clock Friday night, Dec. 10, at the home of John Webb in Bedford. Mrs. Burch came to Bedford about six weeks ago to visit her nieces, Mrs. John Webb and Mrs. Kate Gazlay, and other friends. One week before her death she was taken ill with lagrippe and everything that human skill and love could do, was done for her recovery.
Fannie Ames Babcock was born in Westford, New York, April 7, 1833. Here she spent her early years. Beside her home schooling she attended the state normal school at Albany, N. Y. After the death of the other members of the family, she cared for her father until his death in 1876, after which she came to Creston, Iowa, where she lived with her sister, Mrs. A. [aron] P. Child [Emily], mother of Mrs. Flora [Alma] Webb and Kate Gazlay [Gazley]. In May, 1880, she was married to Levi B. Burch of Byron, Ill., who survives her at the advanced age of 90 years. Mr. Burch's son, Albert Burch and wife of Chicago, came to be present at the funeral. Mrs. Burch's early Christian life was with the Congregational church, but since her marriage she has been identified with the Methodist church in Byron, Ill. She was a noble Christian woman. The funeral was held at the John Webb home Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock, Rev. J. W. Goodsell of the Methodist church officiating. Sunday evening her remains were taken to Creston, accompanied by Albert Burch and her niece, Mrs. Kate Gazlay [Gazley], and her son, Lawerence [Child] Keplinger [Kiplinger], where she was laid to rest by the side of her sister, Mrs. A. [aron] P. Child.

Kate Kiplinger Dies In Colorado
Mrs. Kate Child Kiplinger [Gazley], 68, former Bedford resident, died at the home of her son, Lawrence [Child] Kiplinger, in Colorado Springs, Colo., Wednesday night, Nov. 10, 1937, after an illness of several months.
The body was returned to Creston, arriving there Sunday morning, where the funeral services were held at the home of Mrs. C. L. Bullard, a life-long friend of the family, on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 14, conducted by Rev. Floyd D. Reeves of the Congregational church. Burial was in the Graceland cemetery at Creston.
Mrs. Kiplinger moved to Creston with her parents in the early seventies and was later married to [Lawrence] Irwin Kiplinger, a former Creston furniture dealer and undertaker. He died in 1900 in Colorado Springs. Mrs. Kiplinger and son later moved to Bedford, where they made their home for a number of years. She was a sister of the late Mrs. John V. [alentine] Webb [Flora Alma Child Rightmire] of Bedford. The son, an only child, survives.
In early girlhood, Mrs. Kiplinger united with the Congregational church and was always an ardent church worker.

Mrs. Chris Mosier
Maude A. [nita], only daughter of Asa and Ida Standley Terrill, was born near Platteville, Iowa, June 10, 1879 and departed this life Oct. 21, 1938 at the Missouri Methodist Hospital in St. Joseph, Mo.
All of her life, except a few years, were spent in the Platteville community and at the time of her death her home was on the place on which she was born. She attended school at Platteville and studied music at Simpson College, Indianola.
Very early in life she accepted Christ as her Savior and united with the Platteville M. E. church; later transferring her membership to Blockton. Although during the later years of her life she was unable to attend church because of failing health she was a faithful Christian and died trusting in her Savior.
July 24, 1904 she was united in marriage to Christian Mosier and one child, Trula A. [Shoemaker] Steen came to bless this union.
One of her greatest pleasures was her home and the love and care of children. She took into her home and cared for her motherless niece, Pauline Leson, now of Denver, Colo. Also shared her mother love with her five grandchildren, who had their home in the same house with her. Another great pleasure was the time she spent from season to season planning with her life companion.
The last ten months of her life she was unable to be up but was at all times interested in her home and the welfare of her loved ones and planned for their future. She was ever patient and always enjoyed having her friends come to see her.
Besides her husband and daughter she leaves to mourn her going five grandchildren: Melvin, Anita, Charlotte, Asa and Karen. Also a brother, Dr. Jay S. [tandley] Terrill and wife, niece Maxine Terrill, and nephew, Dwight Terrill, who, with her husband and daughter, tenderly cared for her during her last illness.
On Saturday, Oct. 15, she accompanied her husband, her mother and aunt, Mrs. Dora Standley, to the hospital where all that medical skill could do was done but to no avail and she went peacefully home.
The funeral services were held at the Platteville church Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. W. H. Warrior. Burial was in the Platteville cemetery.

Jack Steen Rites In Bedford Wed.
Jack [Homer] Steen, 63, became ill at his home in Bedford late Sunday afternoon and was taken by ambulance to Municipal hospital, Clarinda, where he passed away at five p. m. Monday, March 28.
Funeral services were held at the Shum-Novinger Funeral Service on Madison Street Wednesday afternoon with Rev. Colvin Caughey officiating. Burial in the Platteville cemetery.
He is survived by his wife of the home: two sons and three daughters, M/Sgt. Melvin Shoemaker, in Japan with the armed forces; Asa Steen, Greensboro, N. C.; Mrs. Anita Miller, Hickman Mills, Mo.; Mrs. Charlotte Smith, Mrs. Karen Weeda, Lees Summit, Mo.; and nine grandchildren.

Mrs. G. B. Pinney
Caroline G. [ibson] Singleton was born in Kentucky, August 29, 1849 and passed away at her home in Sharpsburg, Saturday, Nov. 5, at the age of 89 years, 2 months and six days.
June 14, 1871 she was married to George B. [arnard] Pinney at Iowa City, Iowa. To them four children were born, Georgia E. [stelle] Dowlin of St. Louis; Chas. E., who died in infancy; Edgar L. [oxley], who departed this life on June 25, 1934, and Mary B. [arnard] Ledgerwood of Greenfield.
She is survived by the two daughters, six grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren; two half brothers, George Singleton of North Liberty, Iowa, and Clay Singleton of Bedford; two half sisters, Laura Chase of Iowa City and Sarah [Alice] Alcorn of Ponca City.
The funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Presbyterian Church in Sharpsburg. Burial was in the Gravity cemetery.

J. [ohn] W. [esley] Ledgerwood died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Bruce Monahan in Gravity, Saturday, April 16, 1938, after having been in failing health for some time.
The funeral services were held at the Church of Christ in Gravity Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. C. Max Buck. Burial was in the Gravity cemetery.
John Wesley Ledgerwood, son of John [Lemon] and Charity [Whiteneck] Ledgerwood, was born in Sullivan County, Ind., Jan. 10, 1848, being aged 90 years, 3 months and 6 days at the time of his death.
When a boy he came with his parents to Taylor County, Iowa, settling on a farm, and had resided in the county for more than eighty years.
Sept. 25, 1867 he was married to Cynthia Ann Alumbaugh. To them were born six children, Joseph Robert died in infancy and Charles, when he was sixty-one years of age. The surviving children are Mrs. William [Denver] Heater [Olive May] of Savannah, Mo.; Frank Ledgerwood of Greenfield, Iowa; Carl W. [esley] Ledgerwood of St. Paul, Minn., and Mrs. [Robert] Bruce Monahan [Fannie] of Gravity.
He is also survived by eleven grandchildren and twenty-three great grandchildren.
Mr. Ledgerwood was preceded in death by his wife, who died Oct. 28, 1932. Just about a month before her death they celebrated their sixty-fifth wedding anniversary. They enjoyed together a long and blessed home life and are tenderly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing them.
Soon after their wedding, Mr. Ledgerwood moved to a farm east of Bedford, where they resided a long time. About fifty years ago they moved to a farm near Gravity and spent the remainder of their lives in or near that place. For many years he was employed in the Chandler lumberyard and then went into the store with his son Charley and continued to work as long as his health would permit.
Mr. Ledgerwood was a charter member of the Gravity Church of Christ.

Laid At Rest
Margaret H. Dowlin died at her home in this city Sunday morning, Feb. 18, at 4 o'clock, aged 40 years and 18 days. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church in this city at 2 o'clock p. m. Monday, Feb. 19, conducted by Rev. J. C. Lewis. Interment was made in the Bedford cemetery.
A large concourse of people attended the funeral services at the First Baptist church to witness the last sad rites over the remains of her whom everyone had learned to love and respect, for the patient endurance she had shown during the long and weary months, during which that insidious disease, consumption, had been preying upon her frail body. In his remarks on death, which always bring forth from the lips of this eloquent minister the grandest convictions of a life beyond the grave, Rev. Lewis sought to express to the bereaved relatives the heartfelt sympathy of those who had come from home, shop and office to express by their presence the esteem in which they held the memory of the deceased.
Miss Maggie Dowlin was a sister of E. [llis] C. [layton] Dowlin, of this city, and W. [illiam] C. [rawford] Dowlin, of Ross Township.

Mrs. E. C. Dowlin Dies Following A Stroke
Mrs. E. [llis] C. [layton] Dowlin [Mattie John] of Bedford suffered a severe stroke at her home about 6 o'clock Sunday evening. She was taken to the St. Francis Hospital at Maryville, where she remained unconscious until her passing about noon Wednesday.
Mrs. Dowlin was born in Taylor County, October 22, 1867, being aged 81 years, 10 months and 22 days at the time of her death.
The funeral services will be held at the Wetmore Funeral Home at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Fred Cowles. Burial will be in the Fairview cemetery.

Obituary – Mrs. E. C. Dowlin
Mattie I. John, daughter of Alexander and Eliza J. [ane Shoemaker] John, was born at Bedford, Iowa, October 22, 1867, and passed away Sept. 14, 1949, at the St. Francis Hospital, Maryville, at the age of 81 years, 10 months and 23 days.
At an early age she united with the First Baptist Church of Bedford, and was a loyal member, though not often able to attend services in later years.
On February 12, 1890, she was married to Ellis C. [layton] Dowlin, and to them three daughters were born.
Mrs. Dowlin is survived by two daughters, Hilda, Mrs. Paul Simpson of Bedford, and Kathryn, Mrs. Dwight Kidder of Chula Vista, Calif.; two granddaughters, Mrs. Patricia Holland of La Porte City, Iowa and Marilyn Kidder of Chula Vista, Calif.; 4 great grandchildren; one brother, Frank A.[lexander] John of Fort Collins, Colo.; two sisters, Mrs. Grace Kinnison of Alameda, Calif., and Mrs. Walter Houck [Susie Esther] of Bedford.
She was preceded in death by her husband, who passed away on Feb. 17, 1935; and by one daughter, Helen, Mrs. Harry Beauchamp, who passed away Feb. 11, 1949 at Sioux City, Iowa.
Mrs. Dowlin was for several years an active member of the Rebekah Lodge, and the Twentieth Century Study Club.
She was a lover of her home and family, and a loyal friend. Having an artistic sense and being clever with her hands, she devoted a great deal of her time to fancy work. She loved flowers and plants and had many in her home.
The funeral services were held at the Wetmore Funeral Home Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Fred Cowles. Burial was in the Fairview cemetery, with the Rebekah burial services being given at the grave.

Former Resident Dies In Nebr.
Services for Mrs. Gladys E. [thel] Burge, 66, formerly Gladys John, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank [Alexander] John [Zettella Kieffer] of Bedford, were held last Saturday in Gering, Nebraska with burial in West Lawn cemetery there. Mrs. Burge died at a Gering hospital, Wed., Oct. 3.
Mrs. Burge was born at Bedford, Iowa, on April 8, 1896. There she grew to womanhood and attended school and there she married Cleo Burge on Feb. 28, 1917.
She and her husband farmed near Gravity, Iowa until 1922, when they moved to Gering, where she was associated with her husband in the grocery business until 1945 and then in the Gering Hotel until 1960.
Mrs. Burge was a member of the Christian Church of Bedford and the Hawbaker Circle of the Gering Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Mrs. Thelma Shafer of Gering; one sister, Mrs. Ruth Fisher of Laramie, Wyo.; and three grandchildren. A daughter and one brother preceded her in death.
Mrs. Walter Houck [Susie Esther John] of Bedford is an aunt.

Obituary – Ethel Houchin
Services for Mrs. Ethel Houchin, 77, of Gravity, held October 3 at the Gravity Christian Church, included this obituary.
Francena Ethel Meredith, daughter of Edwin [Wallace] and Serena Richardson Meredith, was born on April 24, 1885, on a farm in Taylor County, Iowa, in the Oak Hill vicinity, north of Gravity. She passed away Oct. 1, 1962 in the Rosary Hospital at Corning, Iowa, at the age of 77 years, 5 months and 7 days.
She was united in marriage to Franklin Lewis Houchin on March 2, 1904 at Gravity, Iowa. To this union six children were born; Ivan and Cleo of Gravity, Faye Scheel of Corning and Geneva Smith of Clarinda who survive. A son and daughter passed away in infancy.
She lived her entire life in Taylor County. The family lived on a farm north of Oak Hill church many years, moving to Gravity in 1934, where she continued to make her home.
She joined the Oak Hill church on Feb. 10, 1910, where she attended church. She was a charter member of the Oak Hill Aid Society. She joined the Royal Neighbor Lodge in 1906 and was a member of the Rebekah Lodge.
She leaves to mourn her passing her four children, one brother, C. [larence] E.[dwin] Meredith of Bedford, Iowa, one sister, Dove Ferger of Chicago, Ill., two daughters-in-law, Grayce and Betty, two sons-in-law, Art Scheel and Wayne Smith, 10 grandchildren, three great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Dollie, who died in infancy, Margaret Jane McPherrin, a brother, William Meredith, 2 grandchildren and her husband, who passed away in July of 1942.
She was a kind and loving mother, with a great devotion for her family and friends, which grew stronger and deeper with the passing years. She will be sadly missed by her family and a host of friends and neighbors.

Frank Houchin
Frank Houchin died at his home Sunday morning, July 19, about 5 o'clock, after a short illness.
The funeral services were held at the Christian Church Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Ben W. Sinderson. Burial was in the Gravity cemetery.
Franklin Lewis Houchin, son of James Warren and Mary Elizabeth [Kinsolving] Houchin, was born in Montgomery County, Iowa, September 26, 1879, being aged 62 years, 9 months, and 23 days at the time of his death.
He was reared and resided in Montgomery County until 1901, with the exception of three years spent at Bessemer, Alabama.
On March 2, 1904, he was married to Miss [Francena] Ethel Meredith, locating on a farm near Sharpsburg. One year later they moved to their permanent farm home near the Oak Hill church and were engaged in extensive farming for thirty years. For an additional three years, he was employed by the Farmers Union Shipping Association. On account of poor health he moved to Gravity in 1934.
He is survived by his wife and four children: Ivan [Franklin] Houchin, Cleo [Ottie] Houchin, Mrs. Faye [tte Ethel] Reed and Mrs. Geneva [Ellen] Brady. Two children died in infancy. He also leaves three grandchildren: Eugene Houchin, Juanita Reed, and Gerald Brady; two sisters, Mrs. Vie [nna Jane] Lindsley of Pismo Beach, Calif., and Mrs. Hattie Lane of Long Beach, Calif.; three brothers: Jim [James Warren] Houchin of Corning, Bud Houchin of Red Oak, and Fred Houchin of Carson, North Dakota.
He was a good husband and loving father. He prospered at his business through his efforts to be honest in all his dealings.

Mrs. Reva Burch Dies Suddenly
Funeral services for Mrs. Reva Grace Burch, 63, held Sunday, Oct. 7, were conducted by Rev. Colvin Caughey. Burial was in Fairview cemetery, Bedford. Mrs. Burch died at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital on October 3.
Included in the service was the following obituary:
Reva Grace Ryan, daughter of D. [aniel] J. [ames] and Jennie [Majenty May Skinner] Ryan, was born Nov 14, 1898 at Clearfield, Iowa.
In 1921 she was united in marriage to Eugene Franklin Burch. To this union one son was born. He is Roland Burch of Lenox, Iowa.
Mrs. Burch was preceded in death by her parents and by three brothers, William, John and Daniel.
She is survived by her husband and son, Roland, and daughter-in-law, Edna, and four grandchildren: Carla, Kim, Peggy and Ronnie. Also surviving are her sister, Mrs. Lela Sharp of Bedford, and three brothers, Leo Ryan of Omaha, Nebr., [Francis] Eugene Ryan of Raton, New Mexico and Lawrence of Glenwood, Iowa.
She was an active member of the Rebekah Lodge, the Legion Auxiliary and several clubs.

Mrs. Dan J. Ryan
Majenty May Skinner, daughter of Ayers [Lynn] and Sarah Ellen [Evans] Skinner, was born on a farm near Blockton, Iowa in Taylor County, March 10, 1870 and died at her home in Lenox, Thursday, July 3, 1941 of a heart ailment at the age of 71 years, 3 months and 22 days. She spent most of her life in Taylor County.
She was married to Dan [iel James] Ryan February 5, 1890. To them eleven children were born; three passed away in infancy. Willie died in 1921 and John in 1922.
She is survived by her husband and six children: [Francis] Eugene Ryan of Raton, New Mexico; Mrs. Lela [Mary] Sharp of Conway, Leo Ryan of Council Bluffs, Mrs. Reva [Grace] Burch of Conway, Daniel [Raymond] Ryan of Lenox and Lawrence Ryan of the home in Lenox; 6 grandchildren: Reldon Ryan of Raton, New Mexico, Roland Burch of Conway, Betty Jo, Joyce and Frances Kay Ryan of Lenox; Margaret Marie Ryan of Casper, Wyo.; two sisters, Mrs. Tom Moore of Beaconsfield and Mrs. Will Miller of Mount Ayr; two brothers, Ike Skinner of Weldona, Colo., and Ernest Skinner of Clearfield.
She had been in failing health for several years but never complained. She was extremely devoted to her family and house, and was always thoughtful of her neighbors and friends. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
One son, Eugene Ryan, was unable to come for the last rites.
The funeral services were conducted in the Barber Funeral Home at Lenox Saturday afternoon by Father Paul Marasco of Saint Patrick's church of Lenox.
Burial was in the Fairview cemetery at Lenox.

Dan Ryan, 96, Dies In Lenox
Dan [iel James] Ryan, 96, retired farmer, died June 21 at the Lenox Rest Home, where he had been a patient four years. He was a resident of Lenox most of his life. His wife preceded him in death.
Survivors are three sons, Leo of Omaha, [Francis] Eugene of Raton, new Mexico, Lawrence of Glenwood; two daughters: Mrs. Luther Sharp (Lela) and Mrs. Franklin Burch (Reva) of Bedford; three sisters, Mrs. Lewis Deming [Margaret] of Dubuque, Miss Agnes Ryan of Gary, Ind., Mrs. Sylvan Wilson [Edna] of Fairfield; six grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren.
Rosary was said at the Bender Funeral Home in Lenox at eight p. m., Friday, June 22.
Funeral services were held at St. Patrick's Church in Lenox Saturday July 23 at 9:30 a. m. with Rev. Adam S. Reisz, pastor of the church, officiating. Burial at Lenox.
