Nathan Gilbert Hicks

Nathan Gilbert Hicks, son of James Allen and Lydia Coffelt Hicks, was born in Piatt County, Ill., May 22, 1854, and died at the home of his son, Guy, in Bedford, Iowa, Feb. 9, 1933, at the age of 78 years, 8 months, and 17 days.

In 1856 the family moved to Taylor County, Iowa, and located on a farm near Ladoga, where they made their home for several years, finally locating on a farm in Dallas Township, still held by relatives.

The departed spent most of his life in Dallas and Washington Townships and enjoyed reviewing the pioneer days with his many friends who have been so faithful and kind in his long suffering.

Nathan G. [ilbert] Hicks was united in marriage to Emma Hiatt on Dec. 31, 1876.  Four children were born to this union, Mrs. George Weaver [Nevah], [Lester] Guy, Glen [Arthur], and Homer [Lee] Hicks, who have been with him through his last illness.  His loving companion, Emma Hicks, passed away on August 2, 1909, and since that time he had made his home among his children.

Besides the immediate family, he leaves to mourn his loss sisters and brothers---Mrs. J. [ohn] T. [homas] Gartrell [Elizabeth Mahala] of Stockton, Kans.; S.[eymour] C. [layton] Hicks of Gravity, Ia.; H. [orace] B. [utler] Hicks of New Market, Ia.; Mrs.  O. [scar] D. [avis] Laird [Ellen Margaret] and B. [ert] M. Hicks of Bedford; Mrs. D. [avid] E. [fford] McAlpin [Anna] and Clara Hicks of Long Beach, Calif.

Short funeral services were held in Bedford at 1 oÕclock Saturday in the home of his son, Guy, conducted by Rev. M. R. Talley, for the benefit of his Bedford friends, after which the body was taken to the Guss church, and Rev. Eppard, formerly of Clarinda, conducted the funeral service by request of the departed.

Burial was made in the Guss cemetery, where his wife was buried in 1909.

Obituary

Mrs. Emeline [Emma] Hiatt Hicks was born in Clinton County, Ohio in 1854, being 55 years, 2 days old at her death, which occurred in Clarinda, Ia., at Dr. PowersÕ hospital, August 2, 1909.  Her sickness was caused from a hurt she received last December at her home near Gravity, Ia.  The funeral services were held at Guss on Wednesday afternoon at two oÕclock, conducted by Rev. Dunlavy of the Christian church at Gravity.  His text and lesson were appropriate, being the twenty-third Psalm.   Music for the service was furnished by Lu Nicholas and wife and Raymond Andrew and wife.

Mrs. Hicks was a good companion and a good mother and will be greatly missed.  She was patient, kind and agreeable to all who knew her.  She leaves [a] husband and one daughter, Mrs. George Weaver [Nevah May], and three sons, [Lester] Guy, Glen [Arthur] and Homer [Lee], six sisters and one brother, Mrs. Albert Fox, Verdi, Nevada, Mrs. Lon Cunning, Clarinda, Ia., Mrs. Wm. Mann, St. Joseph, Mo., Mrs. Kempt Herren, New Market, Iowa, Mrs. W. Butler, Essex, Ia., Mrs. C. G. Andrews, Slater, Mo., W. H. Hiatt, Alva, Okla.

Everything was done that could be done for her comfort the ten weeks of her sickness.  Mr. Hicks was at her bedside almost constantly until death claimed her and she crossed to the other shore to meet loved ones gone before her.  Her casket was covered with choice flowers by friends and relatives.  She was laid to rest in the Guss Cemetery.----New Market Herald

Death of Mrs. Hicks

Mrs. N. [athan] G. [ilbert] Hicks died at the hospital in Clarinda Monday after an illness of two months.  The funeral was held at the church in Guss at 3 p. m., yesterday, conducted by Rev. Dunlavy of Gravity.  Interment was made at Guss cemetery.

Emma Hiatt came to this country when quite young and lived until her marriage with her parents near Old Memory.  After her marriage, with her husband, N.[athan] G. [ilbert] Hicks, she  moved to the farm in North Dallas.  She is survived by her husband and four children, the youngest of whom is 10 years of age.  The others have attained their majority and one is married.

Glen A. Hicks, 80, Rites March 15

Funeral services for Glen Arthur Hicks, 80, of Gravity, were held March 15 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford, conducted by Mr. Carl Cummings.  Mr. Hicks died at his home in Gravity March 12, 1969, on his birthday.  Interment was at Washington Cemetery, Gravity.

Glen Arthur Hicks was born March 12, 1889 to Nathan [Gilbert] and Emelyn [Emeline or Emma] Hicks near Gravity, Iowa.

He spent his early years at the family home northwest of Gravity.

He was united in marriage to Iva Beery March 26, 1912.  In 1914 they moved to Vida, Montana where they homesteaded on government land.  He moved back on his fatherÕs farm in 1918 and returned to Montana in 1923.  While in Montana he was well known as an auctioneer and served as county commissioner for 14 years.

On several occasions he and Iva moved back to Iowa to care for ailing members of their families.  Because of his health they returned to Iowa in 1950 and resumed farming.  In 1963 they moved to Gravity where they have since resided.

Preceding him in death were his parents, two brothers Guy and Homer Hicks, and one sister, Nevah [May] Weaver.

Surviving him are his wife, Iva; one niece, Pauline Davis, of Riverside, Calif.; two nephews, Willis and Waldon Weaver of California; and many other relatives and friends.

Glen will be remembered for his generosity and his willingness to help anyone in need.  He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Oscar Bubb Killed

Former Resident of Taylor County Meets Death At Parsons, Kans.

Oscar Bubb, formerly of Taylor County, but for some years a resident of Parsons, Kans., was accidentally killed at that place Friday.  The details of the accident received here are meager.  Mr. Bubb was employed in the M. K. & T. machine shops and in some way was struck by a flying board, his death resulting soon after.  No other particulars are known.

Mr. Bubb was a man about 40 years of age.  He was married but had no children.  He was a son of Nicholas Bubb, and his wife [Maggie] was the daughter of Joseph Crocker, formerly residents of this county.  He left here about eight years ago.

Oscar Bubb Dead From His Injuries
Was Hurt Friday Morning at the Katy Bridge Yards in This City
The funeral of Mr. Oscar Bubb, who died yesterday morning, will be held tomorrow morning at 9:30 from the residence, 1315 Dirr avenue. Rev. Frank Mallory of the Christian church will conduct the services and the remains will be interred at Oakwood cemetery.
Mr. Bubb had been ill three days before his death which was due to injuries received while working at the Katy bridge yards. Friday morning, while on duty there, he was struck by the end of a flying piece of board with which he was working. The flying board struck him just above the hip, injuring him internally and so badly that he never recovered. He was given the bet medical attention possible, but all efforts were unavailing, and he died yesterday morning.
He leaves beside his parents, four brothers and one sister, all of whom are living in Parsons with the exception of his sister, who is in Montana. He was quite well and favorably known in Parsons, especially among railroad men, with whom he had been associated for many years and his sudden death is deeply regretted by all of those who knew him.

Oscar Bubb Dead
Word has been received here of the death of Oscar Bubb, which occurred at Parsons, Kans., Sunday. Mr. Bubb will be remembered here by many as he at one time lived with his parents east of town. He is also a relative of the Payton family here.
He was employed in the Katy railroad shops and on Friday afternoon, about 2 o'clock, was struck in the side by a board from a saw which he was feeding. He was taken to his home and lingered until 8 o'clock Sunday morning. His many friends here will be pained to learn of his death.

Sammie Dubin, K. C., Dies of Heart Attack

Funeral services for Sammie Dubin, Kansas City, Mo., will be held this Thursday morning at 10 oÕclock, from the Louis Funeral Home in Kansas City, according to information telephoned to friends here by John Chudley.

Mr. Dubin, a former resident of Bedford, is well known in sports circles here, as the promoter of the Three-Two League of junior baseball clubs in the Kansas City area, and for his annual Night of Sports held in KC for a number of years.

As reported here, Mr. Dubin and his five-year-old son had appeared on the Monday evening TV show on a Kansas City station, to be interviewed about his plans for his 13th Night of Sports dinner and program, scheduled for Sunday evening, January 26.  He had a heart attack while enroute home, when only a short distance from his destination and was dead in a short while.

Surviving are his wife, Frances, and their son of the home; Madge Bristow Dubin of California, his former wife, and their two children, a son and a daughter.  The daughter is known as Roberta Lynn, well known for her radio and TV appearances during the past several years.

Weather permitting, a number of local men will attend the last rites this Thursday morning.

Obituary – Fred Dunkin

Fredrick Robert Dunkin, son of [Reuben] Henry and Amanda [Evertson Cram] Dunkin, was born Oct. 2, 1880 on the Dunkin homestead north of Gravity and died at Municipal hospital in Clarinda Nov. 23, 1957 after suffering a heart attack.  At the time of his death he was 77 years, one month, 21 days of age.

He was married to Glendora Herriman of New Market, Iowa on January 28, 1903 and to them three sons were born.

He was a charter member of the Oak Hill Congregational Christian church.  After moving to Gravity he attended services here.

Mr. and Mrs. Dunkin lived on the homestead nearly 40 years and six years in St. Joseph, Mo., where he was a motorman for the St. Joseph Railway Co.  He retired and they moved to Gravity in 1943.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother; his brother, Charles E. Dunkin of Oklahoma; one sister, Mrs. David E. [mmett] Posten [Nettie Jane] of Gravity; and two sons, Kenneth [Brown] and Kennard [Karl].

He is survived by his wife; one son, Jack of Burbank, Calif.; one granddaughter Judy, now Mrs. Phil Acampora.

Services were held at the Gravity Methodist church, with Rev. David Johnson of New Market, and the pastor, Rev. Howard DeVore, officiating.  Burial at Washington Township cemetery, Gravity.

Glendora Dunkin, 91, Last Rites Held March 3

Funeral services for Mrs. Fred (Glendora) Dunkin, 91, of Gravity, were held Sunday, March 3, at the Gravity Methodist church with Reverend Robert Truitt conducting.  Mrs. Dunkin died March 1, 1974 at West Heights Manor in Clarinda where she spent the last three months.  Interment was at the Gravity cemetery.

Mrs. Glendora Dunkin was born near Shambaugh, Iowa on January 8, 1883.  She was one of ten children born to Charles and Margaret Herriman and spent most of her childhood at New Market, Iowa.

She was united in marriage to Fred R. [obert] Dunkin on January 28, 1903 at Bedford, Iowa.

She is survived by one brother, Vanzo L. Herriman of Carson City, Nevada; one son, Rowland R. Dunkin, of Hopkins, Mo.; one granddaughter, Mrs. Phillip Acampora; three great grandchildren of Cambria, California; numerous nieces and nephews.

Most of her life was spent in the Gravity area.

Kennard Dunkin, 48, Died At Home July 10

Kennard Dunkin, 48, farmer residing in the East Mission community east of Bedford, was found dead at his home early Thursday morning, July 7.  His death wad due to self-inflicted wounds from a 16-gauge shotgun, according to county coroner, Earl J. Stone.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church in Gravity, Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Fred H. Cowles of the Bedford Baptist church.  Rev. Howard Devore of the Gravity Methodist church assisted.  Burial was in Gravity cemetery.

Kennard K. [arl] Dunkin, son of Fred R. [obert] and Glendora [Herriman] Dunkin, was born May 2, 1907 on the Dunkin homestead north of Gravity in the Oak Hill community.

He was graduated from high school at Corning in 1925.  He attended business college in Grand Island, Nebr., later transferring to Parsons College, at Fairfield, Iowa.  He gained great pleasure from his work in music as an orchestra leader but in the past few years was engaged in farming.

Converted and baptized at the age of 14 years, he joined the Oak Hill Christian-Congregational Church.

He had never fully recovered from a brain concussion received in an automobile accident in 1943.

He was married to Mrs. Bessie Coffman of Creston Dec. 15, 1952.  He leaves his wife and parents, one brother, Jack of Burbank, Cal.

Final Rites Were Held March 8 For Forrest Posten, 82

Funeral services for Forrest Henry Posten, 82, of Gravity, held March 8 in Shum-Novinger Funeral Home, were conducted by Rev. Carl Cummings.  Mr. Posten died March 6, 1980 in his home.  Interment was at Washington Cemetery, Gravity.

Forrest H. [enry] Posten, son of David E. [mmett] Posten and Nettie [Jane] Dunkin Posten, was born northwest of Gravity in Taylor County, Iowa, August 30, 1897.

He grew to maturity in the area where he was born where he attended the public school and the Oak Hill Church.

On August 28, 1923, he was united in marriage to Letha [Doris] Dutton and to them one son, Dean, was born to bless their home and to share their love.  They have lived almost all of their married life on the farm in Holt Township, Taylor County, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Joseph [William] Thomson.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Letha, of the home; his son, Dean, and his wife, Edna, and a granddaughter, Connie Lee Keyt and her husband, LeRoy Keyt, of Hartley, Iowa; four great grandchildren; a sister, Gladys [Ellen] Thomson, of Lawson, Missouri; other relatives and many friends.

He will be remembered by his family and friends as a kind and considerate loved one and he will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Zona Posten Last Rites

Services for Zona Posten, 90, were held February 5 at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Covina, Ca.  Chaplain Box of the Inter-Community Hospital officiated.

Burial was in the mausoleum.

Zona was the daughter of [James] Gilbert and [Mary] Jane [Irwin] Posten.  She grew to maturity in Gravity.  She was a member of the Christian Church in Gravity and taught a Sunday school class and was superintendent of Sunday school for many years.

She worked in the family business until she moved to California to live with her sister Bernadine [Olive] and husband Al [bert William] Bender.  She made her home with them for 35 years.  Zona worked in the retail business in California until she was eighty years old.  She was a good worker, good cook and a loving sister and friend.

Zona was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Oliver and his wife Stella.

She is survived by her sister Bernadine [Olive] and brother-in-law Al [bert William] Bender; nephew, Maurice Bender and his wife Floy; one niece, Dorothy Gallagher and her husband Len of Fair Bay, Ark.; grand nephew, Jeff Gallagher, Des Moines and two grand nieces; Debbie Patrick; cousins and friends.

She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Died

At her residence about four miles northwest of Bedford, September 4, 1888, Mrs. Malinda Price, aged 70 years, 3 months, and 4 days.

Mrs. PriceÕs maiden name was Eagle, daughter of John Eagle.  She was born May 30, 1818, in Greenbrier County, West Virginia, and was married to Perry Price October 19, 1837.  She joined the Presbyterian Church while in her seventeenth year and remained in fellowship with the same until 1843, when she, with her husband, united with the M. E. church.  They resided in West Virginia until 1856, when she and her husband, with the ten children that had been born to them, came to Iowa.  They resided in Cedar County one year and then came to Taylor County in 1857.  She leaves an aged companion and eleven children, with a host of friends, to mourn their bereavement.

Mrs. Mary Price Dead

Mrs. Caleb Wilson [Amanda Margaret Price] came over from Gilead and took the train Wednesday morning to Barnard, Missouri, to attend the funeral of her stepmother, Mrs. Mary [Elizabeth Smith Barnes] Price who died Sunday, October 6th, 1901, at Rocky Ford, Colorado, where she went a few weeks ago to visit relatives.

She was aged about 60 years, and her death resulted from typhoid fever.  We understand that she had been sick but a few days and her death was rather sudden.  The remains were brought to Barnard, Missouri, at which place the funeral and interment occurred Wednesday, October 9, 1901.

Mrs. Price had resided near Gilead for many years, and was well known to many of our readers who will be saddened to learn of her death.  Since the death of her husband, Perry Price, which occurred about a year ago, she had made her home with one of her sons at Barnard.

Obituary

Died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. [ames] C. Askren [Emily Rose], in Bedford, Thursday morning, September 26, at 10:45 o'clock, R.  [obert] J. Strain, aged 75 years, 6 months and 19 days. Mr. Strain had been in failing health for some time, and this coupled with old age, gave his relatives and friends very little hope for recovery, although he had been confined to his bed only four days.

Mr. Strain had been a resident of Bedford for sixteen years, He was a member of the G.A.R., and highly respected, and he leaves many friends to mourn his departure.

Mr. Strain leaves four children, all of mature years. W. [illiam] F. [rank] Strain resides in Red Oak, Iowa, [Samuel] Irvin Strain, at Omaha, Mrs. Belle [Margaret Arabella] Neal in Washington County, Iowa and Mrs. J. [ames] C. Askren [Emily Rose] of this city.

The funeral services were conducted by Rev. E. N. Ware, assisted by Rev. D. W. Griffith.  Interment in Bedford Cemetery [Fairview Cemetery, Bedford]. The sympathy of all are extended to the bereaved ones.

Laid To Rest

The funeral of R. [obert] J. Strain occurred at 4:30 p. m. Friday, September 27, 1901, at the residence of his daughter and son-in-law, Attorney and Mrs. J.[ames] C. Askren [Emily Rose] in the west part of this city.

Mr. Strain died at 10:45 a. m. Thursday, September 26, 1901.  He was aged 75 years, 6 months and 19 days.  He made his home with his daughter and had been in failing health during the past year but was confined to his bed only four days.

Mr. Strain came to Bedford over 16 years ago and had resided here continuously during that period.  He was a member of the Bedford Presbyterian Church, had been a Christian from his youth, and was greatly beloved and universally respected by all who knew him.  He was an old soldier and a member of the G. A. R., but age and failing health had prevented him from participating much in post meetings in recent years.  His life as a man and a citizen was exemplary and made everyone his friend.

Mr. Strain leaves four children, all of mature years.   W. [illiam] F. [rank] Strain resides in Red Oak, Iowa, Irvin Strain at Omaha, Mrs. Belle [Margaret Arabella] Neal in Washington County, Iowa, and Mrs. J. [ames] C. Askren [Emily Rose] of this city.

The funeral services were conducted by Rev. E. N. Ware, assisted by Rev. D. W. Griffith.   The attendance at the obsequies was large.  A noble Christian man, one of BedfordÕs best citizens, has gone to the great silent city of the dead, but his unobtrusive life, faithful to all that is good, will continue its influence.

The interment was in Fairview Cemetery.

Mrs. J. C. Askren

Mrs. J. [ames] C. Askren passed away at her home in West Bedford, Friday evening, June 20, aged 75 years, 8 months and 20 days. The funeral services were held at the Presbyterian Church at 2 o'clock, Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. C. F. McMican. Interment was made in the Fairview cemetery.

Emily Rose Strain was born August 31, 1855, at Crawfordsville, Iowa. In 1876 she was married to James C. Askren at Mt. Ayr, Iowa, and lived there 10 years before coming to Bedford, where she has since resided. Mr. Askren passed away in 1919.

Surviving are her four daughters, Mrs. May Glynn of Omaha, Mrs. Faye Maclean of Harlington, Texas, Mrs. Maude Brown of Waco, Texas, Mrs. Myrtle Bessey of Des Moines, Iowa and one son, Craig [Robert] of Seattle, Washington. One sister, Mrs. Belle [Margaret Arabella] Neal of Crawfordsville, Iowa also survives, as well as four grandchildren and one great grandchild. She had been a member of the Presbyterian Church since her childhood days.

Death Claims W. F. Strain

 W. [illiam] F. [rank] Strain, 66, died this morning at 9:30 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Fred Packwood [Blanche], of 108 South Sumner Avenue, after an illness of several months.

Mr. Strain made his home in Akron, Colorado, but he and Mrs. Strain always spent the winter in Creston with his daughter. He leaves his widow, one daughter, Mrs. Fred Packwood [Blanche], and two sisters, Mrs. E. R. Askren of Des Moines, and Mrs. [William] Marion Neal [Margaret Arabella] of Crawfordsville, Ia.

The funeral will be Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 at the home with Rev. Homer Baumgardner officiating and interment will be made in Graceland cemetery.

Died, at her home in this city, on Saturday evening, July 6, 1900, Mrs. R. [obert] J. Strain [Nancy Jane Hawthorne Cook], between the age of 72 and 73 years. Deceased had been sick for a long time. The funeral exercises were conducted by Rev. E. N. Ware Sunday afternoon at the residence, after which the body was laid to rest in the Fairview Cemetery.

 Mary Ellen Sewell, 65, Passes Suddenly Here
Mary Ellen [Neal] Sewell, 65, of Baker Flat passed away at a local hospital at 8:35 this morning after being suddenly stricken yesterday evening. She was born in Crawfordsville, IN [Iowa], July 18, 1870, and came here in 1908 with her
family. She was a member of the Rebekahs, Royal Neighbors, Daughters of Veterans and the relief corps, and a life-long member of the Methodist church.

Mrs. Sewell leaves her husband, Walter [Manford], two sons, Roy M. and L. W., all local men, and a sister, Rosa Dale Wagner of Corning, IA. The body is at Jones and Jones funeral parlors pending funeral arrangements.

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Ellen [Neal] Sewell, who passed away yesterday, will be held at the Jones and Jones chapel tomorrow at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Stanley G Logan officiating.  Internment will be in the Wenatchee cemetery.

Walter M Sewell

Walter Manford Sewell, 72, of Star Route, Baker Flat, died in a local hospital at noon today after an illness of two weeks. He was a pioneer orchardist of the valley. He was born January 29, 1866, in Crawfordsville, Iowa, where he grew to manhood. He was married to Ella M. [Mary Ellen] Neal on November 24, 1891, at Crawfordsville. He came to Wenatchee with his family in 1908. In March 1909, he purchased an orchard on Western Avenue and has operated orchards in and
around Wenatchee ever since. In 1935 he purchased an orchard on Baker Flat. Mrs. Sewell died on June 11, 1935. He was a member of Prosperity Lodge No 301 of the Odd Fellows, Tempest Rebekah Lodge No. 114, and Wenatchee Elks Lodge.

Surviving are two sons, Roy and Wakefield Sewell of Wenatchee; two brothers, Marsh Sewell of Winfield, Iowa and Adz Sewell of Washington, Iowa; three sisters, Mrs. Cora Leese of Crawfordsville, Mrs. Eva Williver of Ainsworth and Mrs. Becky Long of Crawfordsville. The body is at Jones & Jones pending funeral arrangements.

 Funeral services for Walter M. [anford] Sewell, Baker Flat orchardist, will be held from the Jones & Jones chapel Wednesday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. W. B. Young officiating. Burial will be in the Wenatchee cemetery. Wenatchee I. O. O. F. Lodge No 301 will be in charge at the graveside. Pallbearers will be D. L. Stevens, Cal Gormley, L. J. Sellers, John Neal, all of Wenatchee, L. M. Sanders and Edward Canfield of Monitor.
