Levi Adams Died At Home Here March 23

Levi Adams, son of Jonathan and Hannah [Luellen] Adams, was born in Ray County, Missouri, in the year 1847, and departed this life at his home in northeast Bedford, March 23, 1926 at the age of 79 years, 2 months and 14 days.

In 1854 he came with his parents to Taylor County where he spent the remainder of his life.  He saw this county grow from a vast prairie into one of the richest sections of the state.

He was united in marriage to Mary Jane King February 27, 1872 and to this union were born seven children, two girls and five boys:  [John] Manford of Clarinda, Julia [Ann] Brown of New Market, [Levi] Wiley and Jess of Gravity, Bessie Farrell of Sheridan, Mo., William [Franklin] and Clarence at home.

He leaves to mourn his loss besides his companion and children, six sisters and five brothers.  Those surviving him are Charley of Mound City, Kansas; R.[obert] T. of Colorado; B. [arton] F. [rancis] of the county, Sanford [Jefferson] of Clarinda, Daniel [Clifton Elroy] of Clarinda, Mary [Ellen] Sowles of Superior, Nebr.; Sireptia [Serepta] Pace of Colorado; Lizzie Ballworth of Colorado; Nell [Melvina Millie] Hawhee of Oklahoma; Susie Campbell of Bedford, Lucy Bean of New Market.  Also twenty-three grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and a host of friends.

He had made peace with his god and was prepared when the end came and went very peacefully.

The funeral was held Thursday March 25, at 2:00 oÕclock at his home.  Rev. Coley had charge of the service.  Interment was given in Old Memory cemetery at New Market.

Levi Adams

Funeral services were held at the home Thursday, Mar. 25, at 2 p. m., conducted by Rev. Coley, pastor of the Christian church.

Mrs. Mary Jane Adams

Mary Jane King, daughter of Rodney and Julia King, was born in Taylor County, Iowa, June 11, 1857, and died at her home, Tuesday, Sept. 12, 1939, at the age of 82 years, 3 months and one day.

She became a member of the Christian Church at the age of ten years.

On Feb. 27, 1872, she was married to Levi Adams.  To this union seven children were born:  two daughters and five sons, all of whom are living.  They are [John] Manford Adams and Julia Brown of New Market, [Levi] Wiley Adams of Gravity, Bessie Farrell of Sheridan, Mo., Jess Adams of New Bern, Oregon, Wm. Adams and Clarence Adams, who still reside at the home near Gravity.

She leaves to mourn, the seven children, 25 grandchildren, and 38 great grandchildren.  Also one brother, Marion Luellen, of Bedford.

Her husband preceded her in death thirteen years ago.  She also had five sisters and one brother, all of whom passed on before her.

The funeral services were held at the Christian church in New Market, Thursday afternoon, conducted by Rev. C. Max Buck of Bedford.  Burial was in Memory cemetery.

Funeral services for Levi Wiley Adams, 79, held Feb. 18 at the Gravity Methodist Church, were conducted by Rev. James Sheckler.  Mr. Adams died Feb. 16 at Clarinda Municipal hospital.  Interment was at Washington Cemetery, Gravity, Iowa.

Levi Wiley Adams, son of Levi and Mary Jane [King] Adams, was born Nov. 23, 1884, near Gravity, Iowa.

On February 13, 1904, he was united in marriage with Faye Perry, and to this union were born three children.

They spent their lives on the farm until his retirement when the couple moved to Gravity.

He is survived by his wife, Faye; two daughters, Eva Coy and Mary Higgins of Gravity; one son, Dale, of Mt. Etna, Iowa; two sisters, Mrs. Julia Brown of New Market and Mrs. Bessie Farrell of Sheridan, Mo.; four brothers, [John] Manford and Will of New Market, Clayton of Conway and Jess of Adams, Ore.; nine grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, and many friends.

He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

On Feb. 14, 1964, he confessed his faith in Christ as his Saviour and received believerÕs baptism.

Final Rites Held For J. M. Adams

Funeral services for John Manford Adams, 93, of New Market, were held July 11 at Walker Funeral Home in Clarinda.  Mr. Adams died July 9, 1970 at his home in New Market.  Interment was at Old Memory Cemetery, New Market.

John Manford Adams was born January 23, 1876 in Taylor County Iowa.  He was the oldest son of Levi and Mary Jane King Adams.

He was united in marriage to [Cora] Ethel Savage on October 29, 1902 and to this union were born 11 children.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three children, Buddy, who died in infancy, Ronald and Mrs. Theo Greenway, by two sisters, Bessie Farrell and Julia Brown, three brothers, [Levi] Wiley, Clarence, and William.

He is survived by his wife, Ethel; eight children, Kenneth of Las Vegas, Nev.; Mrs. Helen Parks of Gravity; Claude of New Market; Raymond of Maryville, Mo.; Harold of Browning, Mo.; Mrs. Margie Knapp of Blue River, Ore.; Jack of the Bahamas; and Keith of Osawatomie, Kansas; one brother, Jess of Oregon City, Ore.; 17 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren; a host of relatives and friends.

Manford led an active and a useful life in public work until the past year.   He bore his lingering illness patiently, never complaining.

Manford was a devoted husband, a kind and loving father; he was a man who loved children and his yard was always full of neighbor children playing.  He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Former Resident Dies In Clarinda

Mrs. Sanford J. [efferson] Adams, 56, a resident of New Market for many years, died at her home in Clarinda, Tuesday, April 24.  The funeral services were conducted by Rev. C. K. Shackleford at the Christian church in New Market, Thursday morning.  Burial was in Memory cemetery.

Rose Adeline Raynor was born Jan. 2, 1878, near New Market.  Her entire life was spent in and near New Market.  She united with the Christian church when quite young.

She was married to Sanford J. [efferson] Adams in 1899.  Four children were born to them, two of whom preceded their mother in death.

She is survived by her husband, a son, Ralph [Milburn] Adams, and a daughter, Mrs. Floyd Michaels [Mime Lucile], both of Clarinda, and six grandchildren, Eva Mae Willard, Shirley and Eugene Adams; Aleta, Charlotte and Lee Michaels; her aged father, M. [arquis] D. [e] L. [afayette] Raynor of New Market; five sisters, Mrs. Dan Teeters [Miriam Emmaline], Mrs. Jake Holland [Mary Almeda] and Mrs. Willis Oxford [Minnie May], all of New Market, Mrs. [Frances] Ann Oxford of Brush, Colo., and Mrs. Bean Blankenship [Albena] of Ponca City, Okla.

Francis Adams, 84, Last Rites Held July 15

Funeral services for Francis Lester Adams, 84, of New Market, were held July 15 at the Gravity Christian Church, conducted by Carl Cummings and Pastor George Carman.  Mr. Adams died at Veterans Hospital in Omaha, Nebr., July 10, 1973.  The Moore-Rutledge Legion Post No. 578 of Gravity conducted military honors and Gravity Sunlight Lodge A. F. & A. M. presented the graveside Masonic service at Memory Cemetery, New Market.

Francis Lester Adams, son of Francis Barton and Laura Hazelbaker Adams, was born October 5, 1888, near New Market.

He answered the call of his country in 1918 and enlisted in the 307th Calvary Troop M. G. Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis, Mo., and was sent to Del Rio, Texas.

He operated a service station in Gravity on highway 148 for many years.

Adams was a member of the Masonic Lodge and of the American Legion at Gravity.

He was never married.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, two sisters and an infant brother, Floyd.  He is survived by one brother, Loyd; two sisters, Ethel Adams and Mrs. Joe (Grace) Hipsley; one brother-in-law, Joe Hipsley; one sister-in-law, Marjorie Adams, who had kept house for him since the death of her husband, John Adams, October 31, 1946, caring for him during his last illness and providing transportation to the hospital in Corning and the Veterans Hospital in Omaha, Nebr.; three nieces; two nephews; one grand niece; other relatives and many friends.

Clara Hitchcock Adams

Clara J. [ane] Hitchcock was born Oct. 3, 1867, in Winnebago County, Ill., in the town of Seward, and departed this life at her home on the Byron Engle farm in Taylor County, Iowa, May 17, 1931, aged 63 years, 7 months and 14 days.  She was united in marriage to Major A. [nderson] Adams, March 18, 1885.  To this union was born six children, Eva M., who departed this life when about twenty months old; William R., of Sheridan, Mo.; Ethel M. [ay], of West Liberty, Ia.; Elmer M., of Sheridan, Mo.; Theodore R. [aymond], of Wapello, Iowa; Esther E.[liza] Irvin, of Sheridan, Mo.  She also leaves, besides her companion, one sister, Ella M. Byers of Denver, Colo., and many other relatives and friends.  Mrs. Adams has been a sufferer for many years, and death came as a sweet relief to all this.  She confessed her faith in Christ when twenty years of age, uniting with the Christian Church of which she was a faithful member till death called her home.  She was kind loving mother, faithful companion and a fine neighbor.

The funeral services were conducted in the Blockton, Iowa, Christian Church, May 20, 1931, by Challie E. Graham, and the remains laid to rest in Rose Hill cemetery.

Mrs. M. Adams Dead
Mrs. Major Adams died at her home between here and Sheridan Sunday night, after an illness of several weeks. The Adams family resided on a farm two miles west of town some two or three years, moving to between here and Sheridan a year or so ago. The funeral services were held at the Blockton Christian church yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock and interment was made in Rose Hill cemetery.

Obituary

John Wesley Adams was born in Rush County, Indiana, Nov. 5th, 1839 and departed this life at the home of his son, Frank Adams, at Ellston, Iowa, February 7, 1926, aged 86 years, 3 months and 2 days.

He was united in marriage to Anna J. [ane] Baity, January 30, 1868, celebrating their golden wedding anniversary in 1918.  To this union were born three children, Frank [Nimrod] of Ellston, Ia., John [Morgan] of Athelstan, Iowa, and one daughter [Laura Della] who died in infancy.

Mr. and Mrs. Adams moved to Iowa in July, 1879, to the farm west of Athelstan, and lived there until a few years ago, when they moved to Athelstan and lived there till the spring of 1924, when they moved to Ellston, Iowa.  After the departure of his companion, Aug. 10, 1924, Mr. Adams made his home with his sons.

Besides his two sons he leaves to mourn his departure, 12 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.  Also one sister who lives in Indiana.

He united with the Baptist church at Mt. Zion, Iowa, many years ago, and was ever faithful.  He was a loving husband and father and kind to all who knew him.  He was one of those sturdy upright citizens who helped to pioneer this country, and always stood for the best things in his community.

The remains were brought to the home of his son, John, in Athelstan, Feb. 9th, and the funeral was conducted from the Baptist church Feb. 10th, by Challie E. Graham, after which he was laid to rest in the Athelstan cemetery.  The music for the occasion was furnished by H. O. Mumma, Robert Ford, and Marion and Calvin Jenkins, with Mrs. Mattie Miller presiding at the piano.  The pallbearers were from among the grandsons and one great grandson.

The bereaved ones have the sympathy of the many friends, and all unite in wishing for them the comfort and blessing of the kind Heavenly Father.

Obituary – John M. Adams

John Morgan Adams died last Tuesday at his home in Blockton, at the age of 84 years.

He was born June 5, 1870 in Shelby County, Indiana, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John W. [esley] Adams [Anna Jane Baity].  At the age of seven he came by covered wagon with his parents to Taylor County, where he spent the remainder of his life.

On September 22, 1888 he was married to Margaret Ann Raper.  To them eight children were born.  Three have preceded him in death:  Vesta Kemery, Grace Sickles and Etta Cavin.

He became a member of the Mount Zion Baptist Church and in 1948 transferred his membership to the Blockton Christian church.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years; five children, Mrs. Effie Weaver, Warren and Elbert of Blockton, Mrs. Myrtle Field of Savannah, John E. [verett] of Las Vegas.

There are also 14 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, 16 great great grandchildren.

Margaret Adams, 92, Rites Oct. 29

Funeral services for Mrs. John (Margaret) Adams, held Oct. 29 at the Blockton Christian Church, were conducted by Rev. James Ferris.  Mrs. Adams died at home in Blockton Oct. 26, 1964, at the age of 92 years, eight months and one day.  Interment was at Athelstan Cemetery, Athelstan, Ia.

The following obituary was included in the services.

Margaret Ann Raper Adams was born Feb. 27, 1872 on a farm in Taylor County, Jefferson Township and lived in Jefferson Township nearly all of her life except for a few months. 

At the age of 15, in 1887, she was baptized and joined the Mt. Zion Baptist Church.  Later, she moved her membership to the First Christian Church of Blockton, which she attended until the time of her death.  She had been active in her church and Sunday school.

On September 22, 1888 she was united in marriage to John M. [organ] Adams and to this union were born eight children:  Effie [Amanda] Adams Weaver of Blockton; Elbert [Roland] Adams of Blockton; Warren W. [esley] Adams of Nixa, Mo.; Myrtle Adams Field of Savannah, Mo.; Etta M. Cavin, deceased; Grace Sickels, deceased; Vesta Kemery, deceased; John E. [verett] Adams, deceased.

Her husband died in 1954.

She is survived by her four living children, Effie Weaver, Elbert Adams, Warren W. [esley] Adams, Myrtle Field; their wives and husbands; nieces & nephews; 15 grandchildren; 44 great grandchildren; 44 great great grandchildren; and one great great great grandchild.

She will be missed by many many friends of this community and county.

Harry Adams Died At Lenox Sunday

Harry I. Adams, long-time resident of Bedford, died at the Lenox Rest Home in Lenox, Sunday, Nov. 14, after having been in failing health the past two years.

Funeral services were held at the Wetmore Funeral Home Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Fred H. Cowles.  Burial in Bedford cemetery.

Harry I. Adams, son of [David] Harrison and Cynthia Adams, was born Jan. 20, 1870 and died at the age of 84 years, nine months, 14 days.

He was married July 11, 1900 to Lena Greenlee.  To them were born five children, four sons and one daughter.  Three sons, Charles, Logan and Eddie, preceded him in death.  Mrs. Adams died in Denver, Colo., Feb. 3, 1944.

He is survived by one son and a daughter, Harrison I. Adams of Denver, Colo., and Mrs. Sylvia Buchanan of Lenox; four grandchildren, Richard and James Buchanan of Lenox, Margie Ann and Edward Adams of Denver.

He was also preceded in death by one sister and one brother.

In early manhood he joined the Berea church south of Bedford.  He was a Spanish-American War Veteran, serving in Company I, 51st Infantry for two years.

John D. Cade Dies

Spent Entire Life In Taylor County

Funeral services for John D. Cade were held Sunday afternoon at the Christian church, conducted by Rev. C. K. Shackleford.  Burial was in Memory cemetery.

John Cade, son of Mr. and Mrs. St. Clair Cade [Elba Jane Baker], was born in Taylor County, Iowa, Oct. 10, 1857 and died April 29, 1937, at the age of 79 years, 6 months and 19 days.

In November 1880 he was married to Miss [Lydia] Alatha Adams and four children were born to them.  His wife preceded him in death in 1919 and since that time he had made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Dennis Crawford of New Market.

Mr. Cade was of a cheerful disposition, was a good neighbor and a kind and loving husband and father.

He is survived by three daughters and one son, Mrs. Nellie Zing of Sheridan, Wyo., Mrs. Carry Jones and Mrs. Ida Crawford of New Market, and Frank [Elmer] Cade of Clarinda.  Also eleven grandchildren, ten great grandchildren; one brother, E.[lihu] H. [ughes] Cade, and two sisters, Mrs. Ida Hipsley and Mrs. Della [Delia Ann] Webb, all of New Market.

Elmer [Franklyn] Adams, 65, died Tues., Apr. 10, at Clarinda Municipal Hospital, just two days after his wifeÕs death.

Services for Adams, a former local resident, will be in Clarinda at the Walker Funeral Home, Fri., Apr. 13 at 2:00 p. m.

Mrs. Elmer (Edna) Adams, 72, died at Clarinda, Sunday, April 8, after an illness extending over several months.

She and her family moved to Bedford in 1895, where she grew to womanhood and was married to Elmer Adams in 1930 at Corning.

She and her husband left Bedford eight years ago, moving to Ogden, Iowa.  They moved to Clarinda in December 1961.

She is survived by her husband and a brother, Lee Trimble, of Forest City, Iowa.

Funeral services were conducted from the Walker Funeral Home in Clarinda at two p. m. Tuesday.  Burial in Old Memory cemetery at New Market.

Funeral services for Roy Orlando Weaver, 87, of Blockton, held September 6 at the Christian Church in Blockton, were officiated by Rev. George W. Swan.  Mr. Weaver died September 4, 1974 at Ringgold County Hospital in Mount Ayr.  Interment was at Athelstan Cemetery, Athelstan, Iowa.

Final Rites Held in Blockton For Roy Weaver, 87

Funeral services for Roy Orlando Weaver, 87, of Blockton, were held at the Christian Church in Blockton with Rev. George W. Swan officiating.  Mr. Weaver died in Ringgold County Hospital in Mount Ayr September 4, 1974, after a short illness.  Interment was at Athelstan Cemetery, Athelstan, Ia.

Roy Orlando, son of Albert and Minerva [Lavina Woods] Weaver, was born near Athelstan, Ia. April 4, 1887.

He was united in marriage to Effie Adams, March 5, 1905.  To this union two sons, Raymond Orlando, deceased in 1973 and John Albert, who lost his life in World War II, in 1944; one daughter, Fredia [Frieda] Marie Smith, surviving, were born.

Roy received his education in the Works school district of Taylor County.  He accepted Christ as his Savior in the Mt. Zion Church west of Athelstan, Ia. at the time of his marriage in 1905.

He spent his entire life as a farmer in the Blockton vicinity and worked at the Farmers Elevator Coop. in Bedford for five years before retiring in 1948.

Roy was [a] faithful husband, a good neighbor, and friend to all who formed his acquaintance.  As a unique part of Mr. and Mrs. WeaverÕs lives was that they had lived 69 years of married life.

Preceding him in death were his parents; one brother, Benjamin, one sister, Mary, two sons, two grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Those left with memories are his wife Effie, one daughter, Fredia [Frieda] Marie Smith, of St. Paul, Minn.; one sister, Jessie Weaver, of Phoenix, Ariz.; 16 grandchildren; 44 great grandchildren; 19 great great grandchildren; a host of other relatives and friends.

Cora Ethel Adams Final Rites Held January 9

Funeral services for Mrs. John Manford (Cora Ethel) Adams, 93, of New Market, were held January 9 in Walker Funeral Home, Clarinda, Ia.  Mrs. Adams died January 6, 1978.  Interment was at Old Memory Cemetery, New Market, Ia.

Cora Ethel Adams, daughter of Roscoe Dowden Savage and Ella Jane Fitzgerald, was born October 13, 1884.  She spent all of her life in the New Market area with the exception of two years spent in Weeping Water, Nebr., going there in a covered wagon and living in a sod house.

She was united in marriage by her grandfather, the Rev. T. J. Fitzgerald, at the home of her parents south of New Market October 2, 1902 to John Manford Adams.  He preceded her in death July 9, 1970, after 67 years of marriage.

Eleven children were born to this union.

Survivors include four sons, Raymond Adams, Gravity, Harold Adams, Colo., Warren Adams, Oregon, Keith Adams, Kansas; one daughter, Helen Parks, Gravity; one brother, Dow [Cyrus Dowden] Savage, Colo.; 16 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, five brothers, one sister, four sons, Leslie, Kenneth, Ronald and Claude (Babe) Adams; and one daughter, Cleo Greenway.

She belonged to the Christian Church, Rebekah Lodge, and American Legion Auxiliary.

Mrs. Adams was the most loved of all mothers and will be greatly missed by loving sons and daughters, grandchildren, friends and neighbors.
