Obituary - James L. Hinton

James L. [ivingston] Hinton was born April 17, 1862 at Detroit, Michigan, and died August 6 at his home in Clearfield at the age of 87 years, 3 months, 17 days.

He was the fifth son of a family of eight and all have preceded him in death, except a brother, Will Hinton at Des Moines.  On April 17, 1895 he was married to Sarah Blaine of Memphis, Mo.  To them seven children were born; of these three are deceased.  Surviving are two sons, Guy [Phillip] Hinton of Bedford, Lee [George] Hinton of Blockton; two daughters Lulu [Elsie] Cortner of Blockton and Lola Quinn.  He united with the Christian Church near Gravity early in life.  He farmed until moving to Clearfield.

Surviving besides the wife, two sons and two daughters, are nine grandchildren, three great grandsons.

Funeral services were held at the Christian Church in Clearfield with interment in the Clearfield cemetery.

Mrs. Hinton Rites Held Thursday

Last rites for Mrs. Guy Hinton, who passed away unexpectedly on Monday, Feb. 12, were held at the Shum-Novinger Funeral Home on Madison Street, Thursday afternoon, Feb. 15.  Rev. Anthony Blankers officiated.  Burial in Fairview cemetery.

Gladys M. Cain was born in Scotland County, Mo., June 3, 1896 and died at the age of 63 years, eight months, nine days.

On September 11, 1918 she was united in marriage to Guy Phillip Hinton at Maryville, Mo.  To this union two sons were born, Ray Hinton [Leonard Raymond] of Corning, Donald Hinton of Bedford.

She leaves to mourn her passing, besides her husband and two sons, four brothers and two sisters:  Earl Cain of Shenandoah, Mrs. Cloie Stephens of Shenandoah, Mrs. Allie Hinton of Bedford, Leon Cain of Glendale, Calif., George Cain of Omaha, Henry Cain of Troutdale, Oregon.  One brother, Cecil Cain and one sister, Mrs. Virginia Martin, preceded her in death.  Also surviving are seven grandchildren.

Mrs. Hinton had been a member of the Bedford Methodist church since 1957, when her membership was transferred from the Methodist Church at Yorktown, Iowa.

Former Lenox Man Dies In Boulder

Charley Quinn [Charles A.], 68, a former resident of the Clearfield and Lenox communities, died at his home in Boulder, Colo., Monday, Jan. 23, according to word received there.  Funeral services will be held at Boulder Thursday afternoon with burial there.

He is survived by his widow, Lola [Hinton]; a son, Wilford; three brothers, Ed of Spencer, Bill and Doc of Lenox.

Lola Quinn, 71, Final Rites Held In Colorado

Funeral services for Mrs. Charles (Lola) Quinn, 71, 715 32nd St., Boulder, Colo., formerly of Clearfield, were held February 27 in Howe Mortuary Chapel, Boulder, Colo., with Pastor Luther Bergeland of the Atonement Lutheran Church officiating.  Mrs. Quinn died February 24, 1974, at Memorial Hospital there.  Interment was at Mountain View Memorial Park.

Mrs. Quinn was born in Lewis County, Mo., April 20, 1902.

She married Charles Quinn May 9, 1923, in Bedford.  The couple went to Boulder in 1956 from Clearfield.  Mr. Quinn died in 1961.

Mrs. Quinn was a member of Royal Neighbors and [the] Christian church.

Survivors include a son [Wilford], 4440 Laguna Pl.; a brother, Guy Hinton, Bedford; and a sister, Lula Cortner, Blockton.

William Ewart, 76, Dies At Blockton

William [Miller] Ewart, 76, died at his home at Blockton, Friday, Oct. 29, after a lingering illness.

The funeral services were held at the Methodist Church in Blockton at 2:30 oÕclock Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. W. H. Warrior.  Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Ewart is survived by his wife and six children.  They are Mrs. I. V. [ane] Wright [Ethel] of Long Beach, Calif., Mrs. Jay S. Terrill [Ruby] of Bedford, Mrs. Charles Pettis [Gladys] of Grant City, Mo., Mrs. Paul Whitehead [Garland] of Mound City, Mo., Cecil Ewart of Blockton and Gweldon Ewart of Des Moines.  There are also four grandchildren.

W. M. Ewart

William Miller Ewart, son of Ralph and Mary Ann [Armstrong] Ewart, was born in Greene County, Penn., on March 29, 1861, and departed this life on October 29, 1937, aged 76 years and 7 months.

On Feb. 5, 1883, he was united in marriage with Flora K. Hickenlooper and to this union six children were born:  Mrs. I. V. [ane] Wright [Ethel] of Long Beach, Calif.; Mrs. J. [ay] S. [tanley] Terrill [Ruby] of Bedford; Mrs. Charles Pettis [Gladys] of Grant City, Mo.; Mrs. Paul Whitehead [Garland] of Mound City, Mo.; Cecil Ewart of Blockton, and Gweldon Ewart of Des Moines, all of whom survive.  Also a brother and sister survive---Frank Ewart of Yuma, Colo., and Mrs. Hattie Wray of Wiggins, Colo.  Also four grandchildren---Billy and Bunny Ewart and Maxine and Dwight Terrill.  All of the children were privileged to be with him during the last weeks of his illness and at the time of his passing.

He united with the Methodist Episcopal Church in early manhood and maintained Christian virtues, which he practiced throughout life----hospitality, sympathy and aid to the needy.

He was patient, enduring without a murmur his long illness and suffering.

Funeral services were held at the Blockton Methodist Church Sunday afternoon at 2:30, conducted by Rev. W. H. Warrior, and burial in Rose Hill Cemetery, Blockton.

Mrs. Ewart Rites At Blockton Friday

Mrs. Flora Ewart, a long-time resident of the Blockton community but of Bedford in recent years, died at her home here April 23 at the age of 87 years, nine months, 27 days.

Funeral services were held at the Blockton Methodist Church Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Ted J. Masters.  Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Blockton.

Flora K. Hickenlooper, daughter of Simon B. and Ann E. [Elizabeth King] Hickenlooper, was born near Platteville, Iowa, June 26, 1864.

She was one of a family of nine children.  One sister and four brothers survive, Mrs. Maude [Blanche] Chaney, Nate [Nathan Oscar] Hickenlooper, Ernest Hickenlooper, George Hickenlooper and Dr. Carl Hickenlooper.

She spent her early childhood in Taylor County and received her education in Mormontown (now known as Blockton) public school and at the Bedford Normal School.  She taught school in her home district and at Platteville.

She was a member of the Blockton Methodist Church and the Order of Eastern Star.

She was married to William M. [iller] Ewart at Bedford on Feb. 5, 1883.  To them six children were born, all of whom survive.  There are four daughters, Ethel Wright of Long Beach, Calif., Ruby [Pearl] Terrill of Bedford, Gladys Ewart and Garland Ewart of Grant City, Mo.; two sons, Cecil Ewart of Blockton and Gweldon Ewart of Ollie, Iowa.  There are also five grandchildren, Maxine and Dwight Terrill, Billy and Bunny Ewart, and Michael Ewart.

Her husband preceded her in death on Oct. 29, 1937.  They lived to observe their fiftieth wedding anniversary on Feb. 5, 1933.

Mr. and Mrs. Ewart established their home in the vicinity of Blockton where they lived happily together 52 years.

Last Rites Held September 23 For Cecil Ewart, 8

Funeral services for Cecil Vere Ewart, 82, of Bedford, held September 23, 1979, were conducted by Rev. Carl Cummings.  Mr. Ewart died September 20, 1979 in St. Francis Hospital in Maryville, Mo.  Blockton American Legion Post 443 presented military honors at Rose Hill Cemetery, Blockton.

Cecil Vere Ewart, son of William M. [iller] and Flora Hickenlooper Ewart, was born October 13, 1896, on a farm near Blockton, Iowa where he grew to manhood.  He attended rural and Blockton schools.

On April 15, 1925 Cecil and Mabel J. White were united in marriage in Independence, Mo.  This union was blessed with a son, Bill Vere, and a daughter, Bunnie Jo.

Cecil was a veteran of World War I, serving in France.  He was a member of the American Legion Post of Blockton for more than 50 years and the Veteran of Foreign Wars.  He also was a member of the Bedford United Methodist Church.

Mr. Ewart resided in Taylor County most of his life, spending the majority of his time in the Blockton area.  He retired from a lifelong involvement in farming in 1972 and moved to Bedford.

Mr. Ewart was preceded in death by his parents and four sisters:  Ethel, Ruby, Gladys and Garland.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Mabel; son, Bill, and wife, Garnita, Bedford; daughter, Bunnie, and husband, Ross, Liberty, Mo.; step-son, Clarence, and wife, Elsie, Munster, Ind.; four grandsons:  Dan Ewart and wife, Doreen, Modesto, Calif., Bill Ewart and wife, Betti, Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.; Rick Ewart, Maryville, Mo. and Todd Scott of Liberty; one granddaughter, Suzanne Scott, three great grandsons, Bradley, Mike and Ricky Jason; one brother, Gweldon, and wife, Ione, of Connell, Wash.; two nephews, Dwight Terrill, Bedford and Mick Ewart and wife, Ilene, Connell, Wash.; other relatives and a host of friends.

Cecil was a much loved and very special person to his family.  The many, many wonderful memories that are held in the hearts of his loved ones will be cherished forever.

CecilÕs neighbors and friends will miss his happy countenance and the time he shared with them.  He always had time for a friend or a stranger.

Laverne Belle Ewart

Laverne Belle Ewart, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. [illiam] E. [arl] Ewart [Evalora Lantz], east of Bedford, was born in Worth County, Mo., Oct. 3, 1895, and died Dec. 10, 1915, aged 20 years, 2 months and 7 days.  She died at the SisterÕs hospital in St. Joseph, Mo.  She leaves to mourn her loss a mother, father, three sisters, two brothers and other numerous relatives and friends.

The funeral services were conducted from the Baptist church in Athelstan, Sunday, by Challie E. Graham, pastor of the Isadora, Mo., Church of Christ, assisted by Mr. Noe, pastor of the Baptist church of Athelstan.  Interment was made in the cemetery at Isadora, Mo.

The sympathy of the many friends go out to the bereaved ones, as was manifested by the large audience that was in attendance at the services.

Funeral services for Mrs. Ruby Terrill, 79, lifetime Taylor County resident and widow of the late Dr. Jay S. Interment was at Rose Hill Cemetery, Blockton.

Ruby P. [earl] Ewart, daughter of William M. [iller] and Flora K. [Hickenlooper] Ewart, was born February 5, 1885, at Platteville, Iowa.

On September 6, 1905 she was united in marriage to Jay S. [tandley] Terrill and to them two children were born, Maxine and Dwight.

The Dr. Terrill family had lived in Blockton, Shannon City, Harlan, Des Moines, and Bedford, Iowa then in Excelsior Springs, Mo., returning to Bedford in 1931.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, Dr. Jay S. [tandley] Terrill, M. D., who died November 17, 1938, her daughter, Maxine, who died March 19, 1965 and a sister, Gladys Ewart.

Left with precious memories are her son, Dwight E. [wart] Terrill of Bedford, two sisters, Ethel Wright and Garland Ewart of Creston, Iowa, two brothers, Cecil V. [ere] Ewart and his wife Mabel of Bedford and Gweldon Ewart and his wife Ione of Connell, Wash., nephews, Bill Ewart and wife Garnita and their children, Danny, Billy and Ricky of Bedford, and Mike Ewart of Connell, Wash., a niece, Bunny Scott and her husband Ross of North Kansas City, Mo., and their children Toddy and Sue Ann.

Mrs. Terrill was a kind and considerate wife and loving mother and sister. She had given freely of both time and service to many during the years of medical practice of her husband, Dr. Jay S. [tandley] Terrill and in the years she operated a Rest Home in Bedford (?).

She will be missed by family and her many friends. The memories of a life well lived will long remain with all those who knew her.

Dwight Terrill, 69 Final Rites Were Held January 28

Funeral services for Dwight Ewart Terrill, 69, of Bedford, held January 28 in Shum-Novinger Funeral Home here, were conducted by Rev. Carl Cummings. Mr. Terrill died in St. Francis Hospital in Maryville, Mo. January 24. Bedford Taylor Lodge No. 156 A.F. and A. M. presented fraternal rites with interment at Rose Hill Cemetery, Blockton, Ia.

Dwight E. [wart] Terrill, son of Dr. Jay Stanley Terrill and Ruby Pearl Ewart Terrill, was born in Blockton, Iowa, February 20, 1912.

In addition to living in Bedford where he attended the public school, he had lived: one year in Harlan, Iowa; two years in Des. Moines, Iowa; three years in Excelsior Springs, Missouri; seven years on the Terrill farm five miles northwest of Blockton, Iowa. Mr. Terrill operated the Terrill Ambulance Service in Bedford prior to moving to Atlantic, Iowa, where he operated the ambulance service for ten years, returning to Bedford in 1978 where he has continued to reside. He was employed at the Taylor County Sheriffs Office as Communications Officer until his death.

He was a member of Taylor Lodge No. 156 A.F. & A.M. of Bedford, Iowa, and a member of Atlantic Iowa Order of Elks Lodge No. 445.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1938 and his mother in 1967 and his sister, Maxine, in 1965.

Left to cherish his memory are his uncle Gweldon Ewart and his wife, Ione, of Connell, Washington; aunt Mabel J. Ewart of Bedford, Iowa; cousins: Bill Ewart, Bunnie Jo Scott, Mickey Ewart, Trula Steen, Fern Stanley Straight; other relatives and many friends.

Dwight will be remembered as a kind and considerate loved one and friend.

Gladys Ewart Rites July 12

Miss Gladys Ewart of Creston, Ia., formerly of Grant City, died Tuesday July 9, 1963, at the Creston hospital.  She suffered a light stroke Friday and another stroke Sunday.

Graveside services were held 3:00 p. m. Friday, July 12, at Rose Hill Cemetery, Blockton, conducted by Rev. Axel Smith, pastor of the Creston Methodist Church.  Sunshine Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star of Grant City conducted graveside rites.

Surviving are three sisters, Miss Garland Ewart and Mrs. Ethel Wright of Creston, and Mrs. Ruby Terrill of Bedford, Ia.; two brothers, Cecil Ewart of Bedford and Gweldon Ewart of Connell, Wash.

Miss Ewart taught school prior to her marriage to the late Charles Pettis of Grant City.

She was a member of the Creston Methodist Church and the Sunshine Chapter of the O. E. S., Grant City.

For several years Miss Ewart owned and operated the Highway Grocery at Grant City.  She moved to Creston three years ago where she resided with her sisters, Miss Ewart and Mrs. Wright.

Will Mahan Rites In Bedford Tuesday

Will Mahan, 91, a long-time resident of the Bedford community, died Jan. 21 after having been in failing health for a number of years.

Funeral services were held at the Shum-Novinger Funeral Home on State Street Tuesday afternoon.  Rev. Anthony Blankers officiated.  Burial was in Graceland cemetery.

William Henry Mahan was born southwest of Bedford in Taylor County, Iowa, on July 27, 1869 and passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Perry Carmichael, near Bedford.

On September 29, 1891, he was united in marriage to Lettie Leora Mobley of Hopkins, Mo.  To this union five children were born, four of whom survive to mourn his loss.  They are Mrs. Carl Wilson [Lola Mae] of Bedford, Joe Mahan of Estes Park, Colo., Mrs. Harvey Gaddis [Phoebe Fay] of Clarinda, Mrs. Perry Carmichael [Lillian Beatrice] of Bedford.  A son, Lonnie Mahan, died at the age of one year.  Other surviving relatives include ten grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren.

Mr. Mahan was one of a family of 12, but only one of them is still living, a brother, Joe Mahan, who lives in California.  Mr. MahanÕs wife preceded him in death on November 4, 1958.

Mr. Mahan lived in Taylor County almost all of his life.  His occupation was farming, and he loved nature, the great out-of-doors, and rural people.

He was a charter member of the old High Prairie Methodist Church, which served his home community southwest of Bedford.  The church building, which his labor and gifts helped to build, has ceased to be, much to Mr. MahanÕs sorrow, but the church, which he served for so many years as a devoted layman, was always a pleasant and hallowed memory to him.  He was a man of deep and abiding faith in God, and his faith found expression in kind deeds and loving concern for all whom he met and all with whom he associated.

Mrs. Will Mahan Dies At Home In Bedford

Mrs. Will Mahan, 83, a long-time resident of Bedford and community, died at her home in Bedford late Tuesday November 4.  She had been bedfast the past several years.  The body is at the Shum Funeral Home.  Funeral services are pending.

Mrs. Mahan [Lettie Leora Mobley] is survived by her husband of the home; three daughters, Mrs. Lola Wilson and Mrs. Lillian Carmichael of Bedford, Mrs. Fay Gaddis of Clarinda; one son, Joe Mahan of Estes Park, Colorado; several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Mrs. Will Mahan Rites Were Sunday

Funeral services for Mrs. William Mahan were held at the Shum Funeral Home Sunday afternoon, November 9, conducted by Rev. Anthony Blankers of the Bedford Methodist Church.  Burial in Graceland cemetery.

Lettie Leora Mobley, daughter of Elijah and Sarah Ann [Anderson] Mobley, was born in Hartsville, Bartholomew County, Indiana, on October 10, 1875, and died at her home in Bedford on November 4, 1958 at the age of 83 years, 25 days, after a lingering illness of several years.

At an early age, she migrated with her parents by means of a prairie schooner to Nodaway County, Missouri.

On September 29, 1891, she was married to William H. [enry] Mahan of Bedford.  During most of their more than 67 years of married life they lived on a farm southwest of Bedford, and after retirement making their home in Bedford.

She leaves to mourn her passing, her husband, William H. [enry] Mahan; four children, Mrs. Carl Wilson [Lola Mae] of Bedford, Joe Mahan of Estes Park, Colo., Mrs. Harvey Gaddis [Phoebe Fay] of Clarinda, Mrs. Perry Carmichael [Lillian Beatrice] of Bedford.  One son, Lonnie, passed away at the age of one year.

Other surviving relatives include ten grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, one great great grandchild.  Mrs. Mahan had six brothers and two sisters, all of whom preceded her in death.

She was a member of High Prairie Methodist Church, which served the community southwest of Bedford and where for many years she taught a Sunday school class for boys and girls.

I. E. Mobley Dies At Allerton, Iowa

I. E. Mobley, a former resident of Bedford, died at his home in Allerton, Iowa, Friday, November 25.

The funeral services were held at the Methodist Church there the following Monday afternoon.  Burial was in the Allerton cemetery.  Attending the services from Bedford were Mr. and Mrs. Will Mahan [Lettie Mobley], Mr. and Mrs. Joe Mahan, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Gaddis [Phoebe Fay Mahan] and Duane, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Wilson [Lola Mae Mahan], Mr. and Mrs. Perry Carmichael [Lillian Beatrice Mahan].

Isaac E. Mobley, son of Elijah and Sarah [Ann Anderson] Mobley, was born near Hartsville, Ind., February 3, 1871, being aged 78 years, 9 months, 21 days at the time of his death.

He was married to Olive E. [lizabeth] Boatman, Nov. 29, 1891.  To them were born three children, Lenna, who died in infancy; Richard of Kansas City; Velma Bettis of Allerton.  Mrs. Mobley died August 30, 1948.

Surviving with the two children are two sisters:  Mrs. Letty Mahan of Bedford and Mrs. Maude Noles of Hopkins; eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren.

[John] Harvey Gaddis, 71, died at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital March 18 after an illness extending over the last several years.

Mr. Gaddis was born near Knoxville, Ill., and his family went to Nebraska, and then to Taylor County near Bedford.  He was engaged in farming when he was able to work, but on account of his health he moved to Clarinda 10 years ago and has lived at 115 E. Logan St.

Surviving him are his wife, Fay, five children, Mrs. Jesse (Alyene) Davis, Belmont, Calif.; Duane E. Gaddis, Belmont, Calif., Mrs. Curt (Maxine) Hayden, Clarinda, Francis Harvey Gaddis, Sunnyvale, Calif., and Mrs. Jack (Betty) Fugle, Stuart, Ia., two brothers, Arthur Gaddis, Council Bluffs, and Fred Gaddis, Braddyville, and three sisters, Mrs. America Allen, Kansas City, Mo., Mrs. Ethel McKinnon, Clarinda and Mrs. Don (Elsie) Foreman, Gravity.

Funeral services were conducted from the Walker Funeral Home with Rev. John L. Bebout in charge.  Interment was in the Clarinda cemetery.

Mrs. Don Foreman Rites Held Here Monday, June 5

Funeral services for Mrs. Donald L. (Elsie) Foreman, 66, of Gravity, were held June 5 at the Madison Street Shum-Novinger Funeral Home, conducted by Mr. Carl Cummings and Rev. Ivo Randels.  Mrs. Foreman died June 3 at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital.  Interment was at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford.

Elsie Frances Gaddis, daughter of John H. [arvey] and Frances E. [dna Allen] Gaddis, was born in Hardin County, Nebraska, Sept. 29, 1900.

In her early youth she moved with her family to a farm southwest of Bedford in Ross Township and here she attended the public school and grew to adulthood.  She enjoyed being a part of the various community activities.

On Sept. 22, 1921 she was united in marriage to Donald L. [eo] Foreman at the Christian Church parsonage in Maryville, Mo., the Rev. Ray Snodgrass officiating.

With the exception of two years lived in Bedford, the remaining years they spent together on various farms where the great privilege of knowing the joys of both field and flower was a part of their lives.

She was a member of the Christian Church of Gravity, the Order of Eastern Star--being a Past Worthy Matron of this Order---and a past president of Taylor County Iowa Federation of WomenÕs Clubs.

Preceding her in death were her parents and a brother, Harvey Gaddis.

Left to cherish her memories are her husband; two sisters, Ethel McKinnon of Clarinda, Ia., and America Allen of Kansas City, Mo.; two brothers, Fred Gaddis of Braddyville, Ia., and Arthur Gaddis of Council Bluffs, Ia.; several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.

Elsie was a kind and considerate wife, neighbor and friend.  Her pleasant smile and personality will long be remembered by all who knew her.
