Former Bedford Man Dies At Clarinda

Jap Sleep Passed Away. Only Ill A Few Days

Word was received here in Bedford the latter part of last week that Jap Sleep [Albert Jasper], then in Clarinda, was not expected to live. He passed away Monday of this week, Funeral services were held at 2:30 Wednesday afternoon at Siam.

Obituary - J. F. Sleep

James Francis Sleep, son of Henry and Emeline [Emaline Gordon] Sleep, was born March 27, 1873, in Taylor county, Iowa, and died June 9 at the St. Francis Hospital, Maryville, Missouri, at the age of 76 years, 2 months and 13 days. He spent his entire life in Taylor County.

On April 8, 1894 he was married to Eva Proffitt. To them ten children were born. Two died in infancy. The remaining children are: Mrs. Edna Delaney of San Diego, California; Frank, [Martin] Troy, Clarence, Harley [Aden], Harmon [Ellis], Mrs. Dona Fine, Mrs. Goldia [Goldie Marie] Narber, all of Bedford.

He leaves to mourn his wife and eight children, fourteen grandchildren, three great grand children; two half-brothers, Vennie and George Stephens of Bedford; two half-sisters, Mrs. Nettie Mackey of New Market and Mrs. Emma Patch of Clarinda.

Funeral services were held at the Siam Christian Church Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. G. W. Swan. Burial was in the Siam cemetery.

John M. Sleep Dies In Clarinda

John M. [artin] Sleep died at a hospital in Clarinda, Thursday afternoon, Sept. 4, following a long illness.

The funeral services were held at the High Prairie church Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. George W. Swan. Burial was in the Siam cemetery.

John M. [artin] Sleep, son of Henry and Emiline [Emaline Gordon] Sleep was born March 29, 1871, being aged 76 years, 5 months and 6 days at the time of his death.

On November 9, 1894 he was married to Mary [Margaret] Weingarth. To them 10 children were born, one dying in infancy.

Mr. Sleep has lived most of his life in Taylor County, having resided on the home place for the past 47 years. If he had lived a short time longer, he would of joined with his wife in 52 years of married life.

Those left to mourn are: His wife of the home; six daughters, Mrs. Flossie Potter, Mrs. Etta Weatherly, Mrs. Florence Maxwell and Miss Ruth Sleep of Bedford, Mrs. Thelma Neumeyer of Athelstan, and Mrs. Orpha Peterman of Sharpsburg; three sons, Dale [Henry], Carl [Lewis] and Ralph Sleep all of Bedford; one brother, James Sleep of Bedford; 2 half brothers, George Stephens and Vennie Stephens of Bedford; 2 half sisters, Mrs. Emma Patch of Clarinda, and Mrs. Nettie Mackey of New Market; 23 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Martha J. Sleep Final Rites Held March 30

Funeral services for Mrs. Albert Jasper (Martha) Sleep, 94, of Bedford, held March 30 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford, were officiated by Rev. C. Ray McCain. Mrs. Sleep died at Fort Lauderdale, Florida March 26,1974. Interment was at Siam Cemetery, Siam.

Martha J. [ane] Sleep, daughter of Daniel Weingarth and Carolyn Mapes Weingarth, was born August 31, 1879 near Siam, Iowa. She attended the High Prairie School in the Siam area, the Christian Church in Siam and later in Bedford.

In 1896 she was united in marriage to Albert Jasper Sleep. To this union four children were born.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Albert Jasper Sleep, in 1928, an infant daughter, Bertha, a daughter, Alma Bales, in 1964; and one grandchild.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Fannie Marshall of Bedford and Mrs. Lola Coe of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; one sister, Mae Leininger of St. Joseph, Mo.; 9 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren.

She was a kind and loving person and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Mrs. John Sleep Rites At Siam

Mrs. John Sleep, a resident of Taylor county all of her life, died at her home in the Siam community, August 7.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Siam Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Robt. M. Peters of the Bedford Methodist church. Burial was in Siam cemetery.

Mary Margaret Weingarth, daughter of Daniel and Caroline [Mapes] Weingarth, was born March 11, 1876, in Taylor County, and died at the age of 77 years, four months, 26 days.

She was married to John M. [artin] Sleep Nov. 9, 1894. To them were born 10 children, one of whom died in infancy. Her husband and two brothers preceded her in death.

She is survived by six daughters, Miss Ruth Sleep, Mrs. Flossie Potter, Mrs. Etta Weatherly, all of Bedford, Mrs. Florence Maxwell of Oregon, Mrs. Thelma Neumeyer of Clarinda, Mrs. Orpha Peterman of Sharpsburg; three sons, Dale Sleep and Ralph Sleep of Bedford, Carl Sleep of Hopkins; two sisters, 26 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren.

Mary Sleep, 85 Final Rites Were Held October 20

Funeral services for Mrs. Frank (Mary) Sleep, 85, of rural Bedford were held Wednesday, October 20 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford. Rev. Loren Daly Pastor of Siam Christian Church was officiating clergyman. Mrs. Sleep died Monday, October 19, 1981 at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital. Interment was at Siam Cemetery, Siam, Ia.

Mary Orlean Sleep was born near Pattonsburg, Missouri April 19, 1896 to John H. and Tobitha  [Tabitha] Jane (Parsons) McNeese. She came to Taylor County at an early age.

On June 20, 1917 she was married to Frank Earl Sleep. To this union one daughter, Elsie Ruth, was born. Mrs. Sleep made her home for the past several years with her daughter.

She was a member of the Christian Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank, September 30, 1954; also her father, mother, three sisters and four brothers.

Surviving are her daughter, Elsie; her son-in-law Frank Clark; grandson, Jim Clark; one sister, Mrs. Opal Hinton, of Bedford; several nephews and nieces.

She was a kind and loving mother and liked by all who knew her.

She remained cheerful and patient through ail her months of illness. She leaves a vacant chair and will be sadly missed by her family, relatives, neighbors and friends.

Mary Orlean Sleep Last Rites Were Held October 21

Funeral services for Mrs. Frank (Mary) Sleep, 85, of Bedford, were held October 21 in Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford with Pastor Loren Daly officiating.   Mrs. Sleep died October 19 in Clarinda Municipal Hospital.  Interment was at Siam Cemetery, Siam, Iowa.

Siam News.

Sunday evening at 5 o'clock Mrs. Isaac Smith [Flora Ellen Woolen] passed quietly away after an illness of several months, and was laid to rest in the Siam cemetery, followed by a very large circle of friends. Deceased leaves a husband and 11 children to mourn the loss of a companion and a loving mother.

Mrs "Ike" Smith Dead
Flora E [llen] Wooten [Woolen] was born in Indiana Nov. 23, 1854 and moved with her parents to Iowa when about 10 years of age. She married Isaac Smith Nov 12, 1871 and died at her home near Siam, Iowa Dec 28, 1902, aged 48 yrs, 1 month and 5 days. She leaves a husband and eleven children to mourn her loss, one son having preceded her to the heavenly home more than two years ago. Her family were all present when the summons came except one son who is in Sheridan, Wyoming, who could not be here, but was remembered by mother to the last.
She united with the Christian church in 186[?] and lived a consecrated Christian life until she was called from labor to reward. She was devoted to her home and family. She was patient in sickness and suffering, never murmuring although the heavy hand of affliction was laid on her for many months. Her life and example will be a benediction to all who knew her and her triumphant entrance into her peaceful rest will be an incentive to stronger faith in God and better service to Him.
The funeral was held at the home, conducted by Elder E E Stickleman, after which the body was borne to the Siam cemetery for interment followed by a large procession of sympathizing friends.

Rites Held Today for Mrs. Mary Smith

Mrs. Mary E. [lizabeth] Smith, 94, died at a nursing home in Bedford Oct. 16. Funeral services were held this Thursday afternoon, Oct. 19, at the Christian church in Siam, conducted by Rev. C. A. Abbott, pastor of the Hopkins Christian church. Burial was in Siam cemetery.

Mrs. Smith was born in Indiana in 1856, and had been a resident of Bedford and Siam for many years. Her husband, the late Ed Smith, died several years ago.

She is survived by four daughters and two sons. They are Mrs. Oscar Duncan and Rufus Smith of North Hollywood, Cal., Mrs. Lettie Ostenberg of Fresno, Cal., Mrs. Minnie Williams and Mrs. Mary Arthur of Hopkins, William S. Smith of Bedford. There are also several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Mary Elizabeth McKee Smith

Mary Elizabeth McKee Smith, daughter of Reuben [Dooley] and Amey [Amy Landen] McKee, was born April 22, 1856, in Park county, Ind., and died in Bedford, Oct. 16, 1950, at the age of 94 years, five months and 16 days. She came to Taylor County with her parents when she was three months old. She spent most of her life here, except for a few years spent in Kansas.

She joined the Christian church in Siam, when she was a young woman.

She married Edward Smith Feb. 22, 1875. To this union were born nine children. Three of the children, Thomas and Simeon Smith and Loreta Smith Miller, preceded their mother in death. Her husband died in 1946.

Surviving are three daughters, Marian Williams and Mary Arthur of Hopkins, Lettie Ostenburg of Fresno, Cal., Jennie Duncan of North Hollywood, Cal.; two sons, Rufus Smith of North Hollywood, Cal., and William Smith of Bedford, 18 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren.

Services For Mrs. Smith Held in Siam

SIAM — Funeral services were held for Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Smith Thursday afternoon, Oct. 19, at the Christian church in Siam conducted by Rev. C. A. Abbott, pastor of Hopkins Christian church. Burial was in the Siam cemetery. Pallbearers were her six grandsons. Music was furnished by Mrs. Floyd Farlow, Mrs. Reid Shields, Mrs. Del Miller and Mrs. Orval Cant, accompanied by Mrs. Glenn Stewart.

Mrs. Ira Smith Services May 9

Funeral services for Melissa Davison Smith, held May 9 at Clarinda Methodist Church, were conducted by Lester Greenwood. Mrs. Smith died at a rest home in Clarinda May 6, 1964 at the age of 82 years and 12 days.

Highland Chapter No. 523, O. E. S., were in charge of graveside services at the Siam cemetery.

Included in the services was the following obituary:

Melissa Pearl Davison, daughter of George and [Ida] Belle Bebout Davison was born in Taylor County, Iowa April 24, 1882. She spent her early life in Taylor and Page counties, where she received her education in the local county schools.

She was married to Ira W. [harton] Smith of Siam on Aug. 27, 1899. They established their home in Wyoming for a time, returning to Iowa where they made their home in and around Siam until Mr. Smith’s death in 1934.

To this union were born 10 children: five daughters, Mrs. Emory Hardee (Mary Belle), Mrs. Ray Jackson (Lavina), Mrs. Seth Clark (Emsy) of Clarinda, Mrs. Everett Custer (Arline) of Sioux City and Mrs. Raymond Finley (Lucille) of Northboro, who passed away in 1930; five sons, Joseph G. of Council Bluffs, Howard W. of Maryville, Mo., Oscar L. of Sioux City, Lester R. of Grand Island, Nebr., and a son who died at the age of 3 days.

After her husband’s death, Mrs. Smith moved to Clarinda, where she has since made her home.

She was a member of Silver Leaf Chapter Eastern Star of Siam and later a member of New Market Chapter. When Highland Chapter was organized she became a charter member and received her 50-year membership pin in 1957.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, a daughter, son, one grandson, Ira Darwin Clark, one great granddaughter, Jolene Hardee, one sister, Mrs. Jennie Fleming of Montana, and one brother, Lester Davison of Salem, Ore.

She is survived by four daughters, four sons, 11 grandsons, 14 granddaughters, 44 great grandchildren, one brother, Lawrence Davison, of Burlington Junction, Mo.

Mrs. Smith lived by the teachings of the Bible. Her motto in life was “Trust in the Lord with all thy heart, and lean not on thy own understanding, in all Thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct Thy paths.”

Aged Lady Passes Away.

The funeral of Mrs. Angeline [May Syester Bashore] Stewart, mother of W.[illiam] H. [enry] Bashor of Bedford occurred Sunday at 1 p. m. at the M. E. church in Siam.

Mrs. Stewart was over eighty years of age and had been ailing for some time although she was not thought to be seriously ill until a short time before her death, which occurred Friday morning at 1 o'clock.

Her husband has been dead several years. Six children, all grown to maturity, survive her. For a number of years she has made her home with her son one and one-half miles south of Siam.

Clarence Stewart of Siam Succumbs

Clarence Stewart, a life-long resident of the Siam community died Friday evening, April 21 at the St. Francis Hospital in Maryville after an illness of several weeks with pneumonia fever, and complication. The funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Siam yesterday afternoon and burial was in the Siam cemetery.

Obituary - Clarence Stewart

Clarence Stewart, second child in a family of five children of Joseph [Alonzo] and Jessie Fry Stewart, was born December 28, 1895 on a farm two miles south of Siam, Taylor county, Iowa, and died at the St. Francis Hospital in Maryville Friday, April 21, 1944, at the age of 48 years, 3 months and 25 days.

His whole life was spent in the Siam community and his education was received in the Fine district school near his home.

On August 20, 1924 he was married to Lola [Mae] Fine of the same community. To them one daughter, Virginia [Mae] was born. They had always made their home with his parents and the care they have given his mother and father during their declining years has been most devoted.

An older brother, Warren, an infant brother, an only sister, Mrs. Mayme Friend, and his mother, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, daughter and his aged father, also a brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Glen Stewart, and a nephew Glen Eldon Stewart.

Clarence was a successful farmer, a man of firm convictions and clean character, was devoted to his home and his loved ones. In early childhood, influenced by a Christian home, he united with the Siam Methodist church and had always been one of the loyal supporters.

The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Harry Walling at the Methodist church in Siam Wednesday afternoon. Burial was in the Siam cemetery. Those from a distance attending the services were Mr. and Mrs. Earl Redenbaugh and Mrs. Roy Singleton of Omaha, Mrs. Charles Arnold of Lisbon, Iowa.

Frank Stewart, 87 Rites are Thursday

Frank Stewart, 87, died in Bedford Tuesday, August 18, after having been in failing health several months.

Funeral services will be held at the Shum-Novinger Funeral Service at 703 State Street at two o’clock, Thursday afternoon, August 20. Burial will be in the Siam cemetery.

Mr. Stewart is survived by three daughters and one son; Mrs. George Sharp of Shenandoah, Mrs. Glenn Kernen of Bedford, Mrs. Willis King and Alfred Stewart of Blockton.

Frank Stewart Rites Held Here Thursday

Last rites for Frank Stewart were held at the Shum-Novinger Funeral Service Thursday afternoon, August 20. Lowell A. Hall, minister of the Blockton Christian church officiated. Burial in the Siam cemetery.

Frank Cromwell Stewart was born near Siam, Iowa March 16, 1872 to David McCune Stewart and Katherine Elizabeth Baschor [Bashore] Stewart and died at the Armstrong Rest Home in Bedford, August 18, 1959 at the age of 87 years, five months, two days.

On January 10, 1895 he married Nettie Goff and they made their home near Bedford. Seven children were born to this union: Alfred Stewart and Mrs. Willis King of Blockton, Mrs. George Sharp of Shenandoah, Mrs. Glenn Kernen of Bedford, Mrs. Jim Lee and two infant children who preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death were his wife, two brothers and two sisters.

Surviving with the four children are three brothers, Burt Stewart of Siam, Lee and Delton Stewart of Bedford; three sisters, Mrs. Ella Perkins of Blockton, Mrs. Dennis Fox of Sheridan, Mrs. Emza Melvin of Albany, Oregon; 13 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren.

Bert Stewart's baby died last Thursday at her home near Siam. The little one had pneumonia. The funeral was conducted Friday by the Rev. Cobb and interment was in Siam cemetery.
