Obituary

Carry C. John

Carry [Cary] Columbus John, son of Amos [Jackson] John and Mary Elizabeth [Dean] John, was born in Taylor County, Iowa, April 20, 1870, and passed away at the age of 67 years, 8 months and 23 days at Bedford, Iowa, on Friday, Jan. 14.

He is survived by one sister and one brother, Mrs. Nettie Fuller of Hinton, Okla., and Leon John of Nebraska; five half brothers and sisters, Mrs. Agnes Knox of Clifton, Kans., [William] Kinsey John, Lawrence John and Samuel Hayes of Bedford, and Mrs. Lola Witt of Dearborn, Mo.

He united with the Methodist Church when a young man.

The funeral services were held at the Wetmore Funeral Home Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. W. F. Overhulser.  Burial was in the Graceland cemetery.

Grant John Dies At Cedar Falls, Iowa

Grant John, a former resident of Bedford, died at his home in Cedar Falls, Monday, Jan. 8.  The body was brought to Bedford and funeral services were held at the Wetmore Funeral Home this afternoon, conducted by Rev. C. Max Buck.  Burial was in the Bedford cemetery.

Columbus Grant John, son of C. [hristopher] C. [olumbus] and Nancy [Ensminger] John, was born at Shelbyville, Ind., April 27, 1865, being aged 74 years, 8 months and 11 days at the time of his death.

When a small child he moved to Bedford from Indiana, where he resided until the last two years of his life, which he spent in Cedar Falls, Iowa.  At an early age he became a member of the Church of Christ and remained a faithful Christian until his death.

On October 4, 1885 he was married to Bertha Ann Mothershead who preceded him, dying on Nov. 26, 1932.  They were the parents of five children, May, Charlie, Evert, Leland and Letha, all of Bedford.

On June 5, 1937 he was married to Alice Savage of Cedar Falls, Iowa.

He leaves to mourn his death, his wife, his five children, six stepchildren, several grandchildren and great grandchildren; two brothers, Walter John of Bedford and Joseph John of Los Angeles, Calif., and three sisters, Minnie Coon, Mary J.[ane] Keith and Anna John, all of Bedford.

Last Rites For Vearon John, 83, Held Wednesday

Funeral services for Vearon "Pop" John, 83, were held Wednesday, April 13, in Shum-Novinger Funeral Home here with Rev. Marcie Smith Wood and Rev. Maynard Peterson officiating.  Mr. John died Sunday night in the Clarinda Municipal Hospital.  Interment was at Fairview Cemetery.

Edith Ernest, 97, Last Rites Held January 19

Funeral services for Mrs. Fred E. (Edith May) Ernest, 97, of Conway, were held January 19 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford, conducted by Carl Cummings.  Mrs. Ernest died January 17 in the Lenox Care Center, in Lenox, Ia.  Interment was at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford.

Edith May Slauson Ernest, daughter of Lewis E. [gbert] and Elizabeth Templeton Slauson, was born May 24, 1878 at Woodhull, Illinois.

When a small child she came with her parents and settled on a farm east of Bedford, Iowa, where she grew to womanhood.

On January 14, 1903, she was united in marriage to Fred E. [zra] Ernest, and she lived the most of her life in Ringgold and Taylor County.

She united with the East Mission Church in her early youth and later transferred her membership to the United Methodist Church of Conway, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, who died April 7, 1957, and a sister, Georgia Ernest, who died September 2, 1974.

Since 1955 she had made her home with her sister, Georgia, until about a year ago; since then she has lived at the Lenox Care Center.

Left to cherish her memory are a brother-in-law, Glen E. Ernest; a sister-in-law, Lulu Reece; nieces; nephews; other relatives and many friends.

She was a kind and considerate loved one, and she will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Georgia Ernest, 84, Last Rites Held September 4

Funeral services for Mrs. Willis (Georgia) Ernest, 84, of Bedford, lifetime Taylor County resident, were held September 4 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford with Carl Cummings officiating.  Mrs. Ernest died September 2, 1974, at Greater Community Hospital in Creston.  Interment was at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford.

Georgia Dean Slauson, daughter of Lewis E. [gbert] and Elizabeth Templeton Slauson, was born just east of Bedford, Iowa, October 15, 1889.

When she was a young girl she was baptized by Rev. D. W. Griffith and became a member of the East Mission Church.  Later in years she transferred her membership to the United Methodist Church in Conway.

On December 15, 1912, she was united in marriage to Willis Carl Ernest, at her home in Bedford.  To this union, one son, Willis Dean, was born to bless their home and to share their love.

She spent her entire life around and in Bedford.  In 1917 they moved to the farm east of Bedford where she has since continued to reside.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, who died July 24, 1955. 

She leaves her devoted son, Willis, and his wife Darline; one granddaughter, Joyce [Ann], and her husband, Robert Hoepker, of Creston, Ia.; a great grandson, Randy; one sister, Edith Ernest; other relatives and many friends.

She was a kind and loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend and she will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Obituary

Lewis Egbert Slawson [Slauson] was born in Knox County, Illinois, Feb. 6, 1849, and departed this life at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. [illis] C. [arl] Ernest, Monday, Oct. 1, 1923, aged 74 years, 7 months and 25 days.

He was one in a family of seven children, five boys and two girls, of whom only one is now living.

Jan. 18, 1876 he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Templeton and to this union two children were born, Edith and Georgia.

In the year 1881 Mr. Slawson [Slauson] came with his family to Taylor County, Iowa, moving to a farm east of Bedford, where he lived until 1908 when they moved into Bedford.

In 1914 he and his wife went to live with their daughter, Mrs. W. [illis] C. [arl] Ernest [Georgia] and it was there, Dec. 8th, 1917, that his companion passed to her reward.  After her death he continued to make his home with his daughter.

He is survived by his daughters, Mrs. W. [illis] C. [arl] Ernest [Georgia] and Mrs. Fred Ernest [Edith], and one brother, Charles, of Stuart, Iowa.

The funeral services were conducted yesterday afternoon by Rev. Fletcher at East Mission church and burial made in Fairview cemetery here.

W. C. Richardson Dies

A telegram was received here Saturday afternoon announcing the death of W.[illiam] C. [haplan] Richardson at his home in Oklahoma City.  Mrs. Richardson [Mary Hedrick] is the daughter of Mrs. J. [ames] M. [onroe] Thompson [Martha Hedrick] of this city.  Mrs. J. M. Thompson and Guy Thompson left for Oklahoma City Sunday morning to attend the funeral.  Mr. Richardson had been ailing for several years.

Death Comes Again to Richardson Home
W. C. Richardson, son of the late T. [homas] M. [eriwether] Richardson, died Saturday at the Richardson home, 200 West Sixth street. T. M. Richardson died July 17.
Mr. Richardson had been an invalid for four years. He was born in Ennis, Texas and was 34 years of age. His wife and a 5-year-old son survive.
For several years Mr. Richardson was secretary of the Western Lumber company at Elk city and Geary. He was forced to give up active business on account of a stroke of paralysis.
Funeral services will be held Monday morning at 10 o'clock at the Richardson home. Burial will be at Fairlawn.

Obituary

Minerva S. Rubart

Mrs. Minerva S. Rubart died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. F. Atkins, in Mason Township, Monday August 16th.  Funeral services were held at the home Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. W. E. Robb.  Interment was in the Graceland cemetery.

Minerva S. Sewell was born in Virginia, Apr. 5th, 1821 and at the time of her death was aged 94 years, 4 months and 11 days.  At the age of eleven she removed with her parents to Ohio, where she was married to William A. Rubart, March 8th, 1839.  With her husband, she moved to Warren County, Illinois, where they lived until 1882, when they moved to this county where she has since resided.

Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Rubart, four of whom, with her husband, are dead.  The living children are Mrs. J. F. Atkins [Julia Paracinda] of Mason Township, Mrs. Laura Wall of Nebraska, Mrs. Ida Rayburn, Bedford, and A. [lbert] C.[icero] Rubart, Polk Township.  There are 15 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.

Obituary - Fannie Belle Rubart

Fannie Belle Rubart, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Kinzer, was born March 3, 1866 in St. Joseph County, Indiana, and died March 3 at the home of Amanda Robbins in Bedford.

She was married to A. [lbert] C. [icero] Rubart, April 2, 1902, at Nevada, Mo.  They had one son, Cecil, who died Feb. 15, 1915, at the age of eleven years.

She had been a member of the Baptist church since girlhood, and she will be missed by her circle of friends.

The funeral services were held at the Wetmore Funeral Home at 10 o'clock Saturday forenoon, March 7, conducted by Rev. O. H. Hallgrimson.  Burial was in the Graceland cemetery.

Dean Payton Dies In Canada

Dean Lloyd Payton, 56, of Stoughton, Sask., Canada, died January 8, 1969 in Stoughton, Sask., following two heart attacks.  He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Guy Payton [Eva Griffith].  Dean lived in Bedford for a time when he was a boy.  Services were held in Stoughton.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Denzel and Delbert; four grandsons, all of Stoughton; and a host of friends.

Phon Livingston, 87, Final Rites Were Held In Bedford

Funeral services for Mrs. Ralph R. (Edna Phon) Livingston, 87, of Bedford, lifetime resident in the Bedford vicinity, held February 8 in Shum-Novinger Funeral Home, were conducted by Carl Cummings.  Mrs. Livingston died in Bedford Manor February 6, 1979.  Interment was at Fairview Cemetery.

Edna Phon Singleton Livingston, daughter of Clay and Sinah Wysong Singleton, was born February 22, 1881, on a farm north of Bedford, Iowa.

She had lived in the Bedford vicinity all of her life and taught in the rural school prior to her marriage.

In September 1912, she was united in marriage to Ralph R. Livingston and they lived on the farm until they retired and moved to Bedford in 1958.  They celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 1962.

Four children were born to them: Hal, Helen, Max and Jean.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and two brothers:  Roy and Rudy Singleton.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Hal Livingston and his wife, Myra, of Bedford, Iowa; Helen and her husband, Donald Haynie, of Bedford, Iowa; Max Livingston and his wife, Ollie, of Maywood, Calif. and Jean Livingston of Bedford, Iowa; three grandchildren: Virginia Haynie Akers of Nevada, Mo.; [Henry] Frayne Livingston and Beth Brooks of California; and five great grandchildren: Ronald and Amie Livingston and Lisa Brooks of California; and Randy and Robin Akers of Nevada, Mo.; other relatives and friends.

Her family and many friends will remember her as a kind and considerate and good natured wife, mother, loved one and friend, and she bore her many years of physical suffering with patience.

Ralph Livingston Rites April 9

Funeral services for Ralph R. Livingston, 77, of Bedford, retired farmer, held April 9 at Shum-Novinger Mortuary on State Street, were conducted by Rev. John D. Kerr and Carl Cummings.  Mr. Livingston died April 5 at Clarinda Municipal Hospital.  Interment was at Fairview Cemetery.

Ralph R. Livingston, eldest son of Benjamin P. [erry] and Margaret Ann Cochran, was born on a farm in Page County, Iowa, on February 15, 1889. 

He was united in marriage on September 25, 1912 to Edna Phon Singleton, and to this union were born four children, Hal R., Mrs. Donald (Helen) Haynie of Bedford, Ralph Max of Fresno, Calif., and Dorothy Jean of the home.

The spent his life in Page and Taylor counties, except for five years in Nebraska.  He retired and moved to Bedford in 1956.

He united with the Bedford Presbyterian Church on April 12, 1925.

He is survived by his wife; four children; three grandchildren; two great grandchildren; one son-in-law and two daughters-in-law; one sister, Mrs. Virgil (Mary) Putnam of Chillicothe, Mo.; and a host of relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, mother and one brother, Rollie [John Rolland], who died in World War I.

Singleton's Brother Dies In Dakota

Henry Singleton, 67, died at his home in Philip, S. Dak., Tuesday, Oct. 20, following an illness of more than a year.  He is a former resident of Bedford, being a brother of C. [lay] C. Singleton of this city.  His wife survives.

He was county auditor of his home county for several years, but was forced to retire on account of ill health.  He was a prominent Mason and Shriner.

Burial was made at Rapid City, S. Dak.

Philip, Oct. 21 – Henry Singleton, 69, a pioneer of Haakon county and a former county auditor, was stricken on the street with a cerebral hemorrhage Tuesday afternoon and died immediately. He is survived by his wife. Funeral services will be Friday morning at 10 a. m.

Mrs. Cora Bradley, 78, of Bedford, died at University hospital, Iowa City, Tuesday afternoon, May 7, where she had been taken three weeks ago.  She had been in failing health for several years.

Last rites will be held at the Wetmore Funeral Home at two o'clock Friday afternoon, May 10, with burial in Fairview cemetery.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. H. [arry] E. Tilden [Lucile] and husband of Delaware, Ohio, Mrs. Charles Wherry [Naomi] and husband of Des Moines; four grandchildren and one great grandchild.  Also by a niece, Miss Nellie Maxwell, who had made her home with the Bradleys for many years.  Her husband, R. E. [mmett] Bradley, died Jan. 13, 1957.

Mrs. Bradley was Miss Cora May Fine before her marriage.  She was a member of the Christian church and of the Pythian Sisters Wild Rose club.

Many From A Distance Attend Burial Rites

John [Burnett] Bean died Saturday at his home in New Market after a lingering illness of many months.  He was 61 years old.

Funeral services were held Monday at the Walker Funeral home in Clarinda.

Fred Foster, Sr., Sam Foster, Joe Foster and Fred Foster, Jr., returned Saturday after attending the funeral services of William Foster of Lebanon, Kans.  William Foster was a brother of Fred Foster, Sr., and was 88 years old.   He was a former resident of the New Market community.

Mrs. Boydston Dies At Lenox

Mrs. Bessie Boydston, 78, of Sharpsburg, died in Lenox, Saturday, March 4, after having been in failing health for some time.

Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian Church in Sharpsburg Monday afternoon.  Rev. E. M. McGehee, pastor of the church officiated.  Burial was in Rose Hill cemetery at Shenandoah.

Bessie Hayes, daughter of Charles and Mary Hayes, was born Jan. 10, 1883, on a farm in Decatur County, Iowa.  Later, they moved to a farm near Shenandoah, Iowa.

On April 27, 1902 she was united in marriage to Charles T. [errel] Boydston.  To this union two children were born:  Gayle Irene and Gerald Hayes.

In March 1913 they moved to a farm near Sharpsburg.  Her daughter passed away in 1918 and her husband Charles in 1948.

At an early age she professed her faith and belonged to various churches until she joined the Presbyterian Church in Sharpsburg, of which she was a faithful worker until her death.

She leaves to mourn her passing her son Gerald and wife Lorene; two granddaughters, Patricia [Gayle] Nisely and Geraldine [Kay] Dillon; three great grandchildren; a sister, Miss Carrie Hayes.

Clifford Ingram Dies In Oregon

Funeral services for Clifford Ingram of Hood River, Oregon, were held there last Saturday. Mrs. IngramÕs sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Wells of Bedford, attended the services.

Clifford Ingram, son of Will and Carrie Ingram, was born September 21, 1893 in Page County, Iowa.  He received his education in Page County and later moved with his folks to a farm near Siam. 

He was married to Corda Hutchinson of Siam.  They farmed near Siam for a time and then moved to the Hood River area where he has since lived.

He served in World War I and was a member of the Christian Church in Siam.

Mr. Ingram is survived by his wife, Corda; a son, Oren, of Hood River; a daughter, Mrs. Clee (Opal) Oldham of Kennebec, Wash.; several grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Blanche Lewis and Mrs. Minnie Kennedy of Hood River.

Funeral services for Mrs. Tressie [Reith Davidson] Hardesty, 83, formerly of Sheridan, were held Tuesday, April 12 at the Sheridan Christian Church, conducted by Mr. Delbert Bickle.  Mrs. Hardesty died April 9, at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Jim Wildman, in Ames.  Interment was at Sheridan Cemetery, Sheridan, Mo.

William [Henry] Bashore, 80, for many years a resident of the Siam community, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Roy Singleton [Edna] in St. Louis, Mo. Thursday, Sept. 27.  The body was brought to Siam, where the funeral services were held at the Church of Christ Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. J. C. Harris of Bedford.  Burial was in the Siam cemetery.

Surviving relatives are his wife [Mary], one daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Singleton, and a half brother, Joe Stewart, of Siam.

Former Resident Died In Florida

Mrs. Elma [Mary] Payton Overstreet, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Payton [Ellen Nora Dailey], died April 26, 1957 at Kissimmee, Florida.  She was born and reared at Bedford.  She was a sister of Mrs. Sarah Butts and Will Payton, who are both dead.
