Uncle Dick Underwood Is Dead

Once more is Marshall Township called upon to mourn one of its old citizens. Once more does the cold damp clods cover from view the form and face of a familiar figure, which we have long seen and honored in the every day walk of life. We take our last look at the bier of the mortal remains of R. [ichard] J. [ames] Underwood, whose spirit passed from this earth on last Sunday night near the midnight hour, leaving behind only the house of clay to be returned to the bosom of mother earth. He is no more. His hour had come and when the call was made the flesh and earthly friends could not stay his departure for the world beyond the silent tomb. As was his custom when in the army he heeded the command of his superior officers and the call was given and he obeyed the summons.

For some time the struggle with the grim reaper was a hard one and many friends were in hopes that he would be again restored to his family and friends but their hopes were in vain. The icy hand of death had placed his seal upon him and nothing that friends could do could stay him from his purpose.

R.  [ichard] J. [ames] Underwood was born at Glenn Falls, N. Y., in 1841 where he was reared. When the war broke out in 1861 he enlisted together with a brother in Co. D, 16th Illinois Regiment. He served three years and was honorably discharged, when he re-enlisted in the army and continued in service until the close of the war.

On December 1866 he was married to Sarah Ellen Marks, who has been his constant companion all these years and who still survives her husband. After their marriage they moved to Barton County, Mo., where they resided a short time when they removed to Illinois. Soon after they came to Taylor County where they have resided since 1869. He lived at Bedford for a short [time] and hauled lumber from St. Joseph and other points with which to erect some of her first buildings. From Bedford he moved to a farm north of Sharps and later he and his family moved onto the farm where he resided at the time of his death.

He leaves a wife, four sons, Harry W. [illiam], Clarence M. [arks], Charles L.[ee], and Jesse J. [ames], all of whom were present at the funeral. He also leaves two brothers, Rev. Wm. of Clay Center, Kas., and Chas. of Poncho, Colorado. A sister, Lovina Boyce, of Red Cloud, Nebr., preceded him to the world beyond.

He was 68 years, 10 months and 17 days of age. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at the M. E. church at Sharps, by Rev. Cobb who was assisted by Rev. Campbell of Sharpsburg.

Interment was made in the Conway cemetery, where the Masonic order, of which he had long been an honored and faithful member, took charge and perform [ed] that beautiful Masonic Ritualistic burial service, with Joseph Dodge, of Bedford as Master of ceremonies and Robt. Rockwell, of Bedford, Marshal of Ceremonies. About twenty Masons of Right Angle Lodge No. 348 of Conway took part in the services and Joseph Dodge, Emory Wolcott, Fred Martin and Robt. Rockwell, masons from Bedford, also took an active part in the services. The Old Soldiers had charge of the services at the house and also acted as pallbearers.

And thus closes the life and work of another honored citizen.

Another Veteran Gone

Richard [James] Underwood, an old soldier, and one of the oldest settlers of the county, died at his home one and a half miles east of Sharps, Sunday night at about 12 o'clock. He had been ill for several months, but Sunday it was thought that he was considerably better, and his death was entirely unexpected and the cause of universal sorrow throughout the community where he was known so well.

A wife and four sons of his immediate family remain to mourn their loss. The four boys are all grown to manhood, and have married and have families of their own. Three of them live in Taylor County and one resides at Tabor, Iowa.

The funeral will, be held at 3 o'clock this afternoon at the M. R. church in Conway, and will be conducted by the masons of which order the deceased was an honored member. Rev. Coe, of Conway, will deliver the address and the interment will be at Conway cemetery.
