Masons Youngest Son Dies In Action
Mr.
and Mrs. Kent Mason of
Waterloo, formerly of Bedford, have been notified that their son, Staff
Sergeant Maurice Mason,
21, was killed in action January 30 in Italy. He recently was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action
in Africa. Born in Lenox he was educated at Bedford
and Independence, and was employed as a grocery clerk in Denison before
entering service in October 1940. Two brothers also survive.
Maurice was the Mason's youngest son and will be remembered
here as Jimmie.

Wells Dies in St. Joseph
Mrs.
Louisa M. Wells, 69, of St. Joseph, Mo., died Thursday, May 4, in
a hospital in that city. The
funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Siam Sunday afternoon,
conducted by Rev. Harry Walling of Clarinda. Burial was in the Siam cemetery.
Mrs.
Wells is a former resident
of the Siam community, and was a sister-in-law of J. S. Wells of near New Market. She left Siam about thirty years ago.
She
is survived by three sons, Emmett Wells of St. Joseph, C. [larence]
H. Wells of Kansas City
and Sgt. William H. Wells of Fort Jackson, S. C. and one daughter, Miss Bertha M. [ay] Wells of the home. There are also three grandchildren and
two brothers.

Richard Armstrong, second
son of G. [eorge] W. and Louisa [Switzer] Armstrong, was born May 29, 1876 and died Sunday, Dec. 23, at the age of 75 years,
six months, 24 days.
When
he was 16 years of age, he moved with his family to Taylor County, Iowa,
where he spent the remainder of his life.
At
eighteen years of age, he gave his heart to the Lord and united with
the Gilead Methodist Church near Bedford. Of late years he attended the Zion church at Bedford and became
a member. During a recent revival, which was held
from Nov. 20 to Dec. 9, he only missed one night, always having the
lights on and a warm fire awaiting those who came.
On
Nov. 24, 1900, he was married to Nancy J. Green, who died Sept. 8, 1907. On Sept. 3, 1919, he was married to Ella
Thompson, who passed away
March 2, 1943.
His
father, mother, two sisters and a brother also preceded him in death.
He
leaves one brother, Charlie Armstrong of Harrisonville, Mo., and two nieces.
Funeral
services were held at the Wetmore Funeral Home, Friday Dec. 28, conducted
by Rev. and Mrs. T. J. Overholt. Burial was in the Bedford cemetery.

was born in Grand Junction, Iowa, November 26, 1903. She lived in Grand Junction and grew to maturity there where
she attended the public school and the Lutheran Church.
In
1945 she was united in marriage to John A. Larson at Bedford and they lived in Bedford.
She
was employed by Cudahy Packing Co. in Bedford for 11 years and by Mount
Arbor Nursery in Shenandoah for several years.
Mrs.
Larson was a member of the Lutheran church in which she was baptized
in 1904.
She
was preceded in death by her parents.
Left
to cherish her memory are her husband, John A. Larson; a brother, Karl Krueger; nieces and nephews and many friends.
She
was a kind and considerate wife and will be missed by those who loved
her.

Hettie Jane Kemery was
born May 14, 1878, and departed this life April 17, 1928, at her home
two miles west of Athelstan, Ia., aged 49 years, 11 months and 3 days. She was united in marriage to Albert Kemery, Aug. 19, 1893. To this union was born two children, one son, Ira Kemery of Blockton, Ia., and one daughter, Mrs. C. [harles]
T. [homas] Fluke [Azelda
Hazel] of Blockton, Ia. She leaves to mourn her departure, her
companion, her two children, and two grandchildren, Clyde Kemery and Reta Fluke of Blockton, her father, Alfred Rusco; and six half sisters, Mrs. Thomas White, of Strand, Ia.; Mrs. Fred Bowens of Conway, Ia.; Mrs. Henry McNeese [Della] of Blockton, Ia.; Mrs. Frank Young of Solomon, Kans.; Mrs. Irvin Mercer [Lola]
of Conway, Ia.; and Mrs. Raymond Reece of Athelstan,
Ia.; besides many other relatives and friends. At a tender age she lost by death two little sisters, and her
mother, Ruthie Jane Cordell Rusco,
died Dec. 25, 1887. Although
left motherless, she embraced the Christian faith shortly afterward. Her life has ever been a living testimony, and if through frailty
and mistakes she sometimes erred, it was not of the heart. She was a loving and devoted wife and
mother, a generous, kind and helpful neighbor, ever willing to lend
a hand to any worthy cause. She
was an interested Sunday school worker, a faithful attendant at divine
worship as health and strength permitted; and by those who knew her
intimately, she will be sadly missed.
The
funeral services were held in the Mt. Zion Church, April 18, 1928, conducted
by Challie E. Graham, Chas. A. Jones and Mac Lamar, after which the
remains were laid to rest in the Athelstan cemetery. The entire community unite in extending sincere sympathy to the
sorrowing husband and family. May they look to Him who has promised to wipe away all tears.

of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Bordner,
was born September 29, 1869, at Lewiston, Fulton County, Illinois, and
died at the St. Francis Hospital in Maryville, Mo., April 16, 1928,
aged 58 years, 6 months and 18 days. At the age of eleven years she moved with her parents to Taylor
County, Iowa, where she grew to a splendid womanhood. She was married to Melford J. Sheley in 1888, and to this union were born five children, three daughters
and two sons. The daughters
are Mrs. Carrie Roush of Hopkins, Mo., Mrs. [Jessie] Annice Horning of Bedford, Iowa, and Mrs. Velma Oberhauser of Hopkins, Mo. The sons are Faye Sheley of Shenandoah, Iowa, and the other is Floyd of Bedford, Iowa.
She
was a woman of rare qualities, much strength of personality, and possessing
a most congenial and happy disposition. She was greatly devoted to her family and would readily undergo
any sacrifice that their comfort and happiness might be conserved. She was prominent in Rural Club Circles,
taking a great interest in the Valley Community Club, of which she was
a very influential member, and had served the club as its vice president. She was also a very active member in the
Valley Local of the Farmers Union. In early life, she saw the worth whileness of allying herself
with God and was converted and at once joined the Methodist church in
Siam, Iowa, later transferring her membership to Hopkins, Mo., where
she held her membership at the time of her death. She leaves to mourn her death her devoted husband and five children,
four sisters who are Mrs. James Williams of Lake City, Kansas, Mrs. James Quigley of Lewiston, Ill., Mrs. Elmer Orme and Mrs. Sidney Webb of
Bedford, Iowa, and three brothers who are John and Harry Bordner of
Bedford, Iowa, and Frank Bordner of Hopkins, Mo. Aside from
these she also leaves eight grandchildren, besides hosts of other friends
and relatives. Her funeral
was conducted in the Methodist church of Hopkins, Mo., by her pastor,
the Rev. J. Howard Thompson, Wednesday afternoon, after which she was
laid to rest in the Hopkins cemetery to await the end of all things. The grief stricken family will have the sympathy of all in
their sorrow.

was born in Jackson Township, Taylor County, July 9, 1895, and died
at his home near Blockton, January 21, 1950.
On
Dec. 13, 1914, he was married to Vesta Adams. To
them a son, Clyde [Kenneth],
was born. The mother passed
away Feb. 7, 1920.
On
October 13, 1925, Mr. Kemery married Mrs. Florence McConahay.
He
leaves to mourn his departure his wife, and her three daughters, Mrs.
Darlene Wells, Joan and Shirley; his son and wife; two grandsons, Jerry and Wayne; his sister, Mrs. Azelda [Hazel] Fluke and husband, and their three daughters, Mrs.
Reta Miller, Mrs. Hazel Lawrence and Cecile Fluke.
In
the year 1927 he united with the Mount Zion church near Athelstan.
His
boyhood days and earlier manhood was spent as a farmer. He moved to Blockton in 1926, buying a
blacksmith business and continued to work at this occupation for 19
years. In the fall of 1945 he returned to the
farm, devoting much time to the formation of a Jersey dairy herd. He was a faithful husband, a loving father,
a kind, helpful neighbor and a devoted church worker.
The
funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Blockton, Tuesday,
Jan. 25, at 2 p. m., with Rev. Floyd and Linda Tolby officiating. Burial was in the Athelstan cemetery.

Word has been received by Mrs. Walter Croy [Ethel
Martin Shehan Stafford], Omaha, that her son, S. Sgt. Ernest John Shehan, formerly reported missing in action,
was killed in action over France, Nov. 30. He was a radio operator with the 9th Army Air Force.
John entered the service April 25, 1942, and had
been overseas since July.
Another son, Pfc. Robert M. [artin], entered service Oct. 29, 1942,
and is with the 424 Inf. in Belgium. He has been overseas since Oct.
Both John and Bob, before entering service, were employed by the Cudahy Packing
Plant at Bedford.
They are grandsons of Mr. and Mrs. J. [acob] W.

services for Mrs. Raymond (Maxine) Schneider, 63, of Bedford, were held November 11, in the First

Schneider died November 9, 1976, in Clarinda Municipal Hospital. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford.
Maxine
Dunbar Schneider, daughter
of Edgar Clyde and Ethel Edna Beadel Dunbar,
was born in Lenox, Iowa, on December 29, 1912.
She
lived in the Lenox community where she attended the public school and
was a member of the Christian Church, later transferring her membership
to the First Baptist Church, Bedford, Iowa. After graduation, she taught in several rural schools around
Lenox.
On
January 1, 1944, she was united in marriage to Raymond Wildman Schneider at Maryville, Mo., and to this union two daughters
were born. She was preceded
in death by her husband, Raymond, her father, two brothers and one sister.
She
was blessed with four grandchildren, who were very special in her life.
Maxine
lived her life for God and loved serving Him. Through teaching in public school and Sunday school, Maxine
touched many young hearts and lives. She was a loving wife and mother.
Although
everyone who knew Maxine will miss her greatly, we know that her rewards
and her eternal life with God are just beginning.
She
leaves to cherish her memory, two daughters, Phyllis Marvelli and her husband, Melvin, of Carlisle, Ia., Christina Long and her husband, Richard, of Lenox, Ia.; mother, Ethel Dunbar of Lenox, Iowa; three sisters, Lenore Bailie of Lenox, Olive Sutton of Ottumwa, and Phyllis Brown of Phoenix, Ariz.; two brothers, George Dunbar of Omaha, Nebraska and Dick Dunbar of Phoenix, Ariz.; four grandchildren, Kimberly and Daren Long, Brandon and Bambi Marvelli, other relatives and a host of friends.

She
attended rural schools in Taylor County and was graduated from Gravity
High School. She attended
Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls and taught in rural schools
in Taylor County four years.
She
was married to Carl Newkirk on March 3, 1920 at Bedford. To
this union were born five children. They are: Cecil of Bedford, Dean of Athelstan, Dale of the home, Jean Vance of Leavenworth, Kansas, and Ann Meek of Blockton.
She
is also survived by two daughters-in-law; two sons-in-law; 15 grandchildren;
two step grandchildren, and one great grandson.
She
was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, two sisters, her
husband, Carl, and
one grandson.
She
was always diligent in her participation in community and civic affairs,
having held various offices in farm and benevolent organizations over
the years. She dearly loved her Lord and Savior,
serving as a lifelong member of the Methodist Church in many capacities.
Words
cannot describe the vacancy her passing has caused in the hearts and
lives of her friends and loved ones, but we know she has taken her place
in the blissful Haven of peace and rest.

Surviving are her husband, Elvin O. [scar] "Pete" Bownes; a daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Punteney of Council Bluffs, her father, William M. Hunt of Redding; one brother, George Lewis Hunt of Nebraska City and seven grandchildren.
Funeral will be Monday at 2 p. m. at Woodring's chapel, the Rev. Fred Freeland of the Gospel Tabernacle officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn.

ATHELSTAN – Former Resident Dies – Mr. and Mrs. M. F. Older received word Friday of the death of their sister-in-law, Mrs. Elvin Bownes at Council Bluffs. She had been in Mercy Hospital several months. She was a daughter of Rev. Will Hunt of Redding and formerly resided here.
