Passed Away

Death of Mr. Theo. Derrickson, at Cheyenne

Mr. Theodore Derrickson died on Friday last at Cheyenne of consumption, aged twenty-eighty years.

The deceased was born in Shelby county, Indiana, and came to Taylor county in company with his parents in 1854, the family settling on the spot where Mr. John Graff’s store is now located, on the corner of Main and Green Streets, in this city. He has resided here ever since and has a large acquaintance throughout the county. The origin of the disease of which he died probably dates back to the close of the war when he was run over by a sled, receiving severe injuries in the side, of which he has ever since complained. About ten years ago he was attacked with measles, which produced further complications in the disease and, it is believed, resulted in enlargement of the liver and eventually caused consumption. He had been unable to attend to his usual avocation for more than a year prior to his death, and about the 7th of July, conceived the idea that a trip to Wyoming Territory would benefit him. He started overland, traveling by easy stages and accompanied by Mrs. Derrickson and his brothers, Messrs. David and Cary Derrickson. The journey was continued as far as Fort Laramie, when he gave it up, telling his wife and brothers that if he was to return home alive they must start home at once. The return trip was begun, but upon arriving at Cheyenne the party was obliged to halt, Theodore proving too weak to continue the journey, and he died as stated, on the 19th inst. The remains were interred in the cemetery at Cheyenne.

The deceased leaves a wife and one child, a boy aged about three years, who, with many other relatives and friends, sincerely mourn his early death.

[Hamilton, James Ross]

Taylor County, Iowa

Just over the line lives Mr. Frank Hamilton, son-in-law to Chas. Dresher; all who know Frank will sympathize deeply with him when they know that last Thursday he was called to part with his only child [James Ross], a dear little boy after about 22 hours sickness. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Lonsdale at Morning Star church, Iowa, he being assisted by Rev. Sarchet of Bedford, and the remains were laid in Bedford cemetery. This was the first death in the Morning Star district for many years, and the first death amongst the Presbyterians since their church was organized. May it be the last for many, many years. May joy be theirs and not sorrow.
