Eva Irene Payton

Mrs. Eva [Irene] Griffith Payton, daughter of Mrs. Emma [Rosetta Martin] Griffith, was born near Conway February 24, 1894 and died at the home of her sister, Mrs. F. [orrest] W. Linebarger [Bessie Beulah], at Dallas, Texas, January 25, 1918, aged 23 years, 11 months and 1 day.

She was married to Guy Payton, son of Mr. and Mrs. S. [amuel] L. [loyd] Payton [Margaret Woods], December 28, 1909 and to this union was born a son, Dean, who with the husband survives her.

About six years ago the young couple moved to Canada where they have since resided near Earl Grey, Sask., and where Mr. Payton has established himself as one of the leading wheat growers.

Mr. and Mrs. Payton had spent the holidays with relatives and friends near Conway and Bedford and while on a tour of the south were visiting with her sister, Mrs. F. [orrest] W. Linebarger [Bessie Beulah], at Dallas, Texas when she was taken ill and an immediate operation was found necessary which was successfully performed, but double pneumonia developed. Although every medical aid possible was administered, after a short illness she died at St. Paul's Sanitarium at Dallas, Texas, Friday at 5:39 p. m.

The remains, accompanied by the husband and little son and Mr. and Mrs. F.[orrest] W. Linebarger, reached Bedford Sunday evening and were taken to the home of Mr. and Mrs. F. [rederic] E. Payton.

Besides her husband and little son, Mrs. Payton is survived by her mother, Mrs. Emma Griffith of Conway, three brothers, Lloyd and Earl of Conway and Guy of Fairlight, Sask., Canada, and one sister, Mrs. F. [orrest] W. Linebarger [Bessie Beulah] of Dallas, Texas.

When a child she united with the Christian church at Bedford.  The great number of floral offerings were mute evidence of the love and sincere estimation in which this young woman was held by all who knew her.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the home of Mr. and Mrs. F. [rederic] E. Payton by Rev. J. A. Currie and interment made in the Bedford cemetery.

Grandma Shade Dies

Mrs. Robert Shade, affectionately called "Grandma" by all who knew her, passed to her reward at the old homestead, southwest of Bedford, and now in charge of her son-in-law, Dick Scott.  Mrs. Shade had lived to a ripe old age, being past 91 years of age.  Her husband preceded her to the great beyond only a few years ago, he being 96 years old at the time of his demise.  Below we give a brief biography of the life of the deceased, as handed us by the pastor, Rev. Fletcher of the Baptist church:

Caroline M. Daken was born February 8th, 1832, in Belmont County, Ohio.  She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Daken.

On the 20th day of February, 1854, in DeKalb County, Missouri, she was married to Robert Shade and went to live in Morrow County, Ohio.  Some years later they came west and lived for a time in Hancock County, Ill., and 54 years ago they came to Iowa and settled on the old home place in Taylor County, northwest of Bedford.

God blessed this union with six children, three of whom she saw grow to full womanhood.

Many years ago, Mrs. Shade, through faith in Jesus Christ as her Saviour, became a Christian and united with the Baptist church at New Market and some twenty-five years ago she transferred her membership to the Baptist church at Bedford, of which she has remained a faithful member.

Mrs. Shade was the last of a family of eight to pass on to the great home Beyond, at a ripe old age of 91 years, 3 months and 16 days, leaving to mourn the loss of a mother and a Mother's love the three daughters, Mrs. Isa L. Ross of Oakland, Calif., Mrs. Hattie Scott of Bedford, and Mrs. Carrie Schively of Braddyville, Iowa, 14 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

Mrs. Shade passed to her reward on Thursday at the old homestead, now the home of her daughter, Mrs. [Andrew] D. [ick] Scott, where she has made her home for the past few years, where she has seen the ripening of many fields of grain. She, too, has come to the grave in a full age like as a shock of corn in its season.

            Life's Race well run,

            Life's Work well done,

            Life's Crown well won;

                Now comes rest.

The funeral services were held at the home of her daughter, Mrs. [Andrew] D.[ick] Scott, Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock, conducted by her pastor, Rev. C. W. Fletcher.  Burial was made in Graceland cemetery.
