Percy Wilbur Gilreath was born March 28, 1911 to Lloyd and Nora Young Gilreath on his grandfather Young's farm, northeast   of   Grand   River, Iowa, where he lived until the early 1930's. His love of horses drew him to employment on race tracks in California and Chicago until the late 1930's. While working as an attendant at the Glenwood School,  he met and married Ruby Esther Faubion on July 15, 1939. Together they worked at the state hospital in Lincoln, Neb. where Hamilton Barton was born in 1941.

Interment was held at Fairview Cemetery in Bedford. Memorials can be given in Ruby's name. Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Bedford.

Ruby Esther Faubion Gilreath was born April 5, 1917, in Fremont County, Iowa the oldest child of W. [alter] L. Faubion and Bertha Ward Faubion. She grew up attending school in the Anderson, Iowa area. She later went to work at the Glenwood State Hospital where she met P. [ercy] W. (Gil) Gilreath. On July 15, 1939, the couple were united in marriage in Rock Port, Missouri. Ruby and Gil moved to Lincoln, Nebraska where they both worked at the State Hospital. While living there, their son, Bart was born on August 3, 1941. When Gil answered the call to serve his country during World War II by joining the United States Army in 1942, Ruby and Bart went to Keyapaha,. South Dakota to stay with her dad. Gil returned from overseas in 1945 and the family continued to live there.

On July 24, 1946 their daughter, Sharilyn Kay was born and the next year they moved to Osceola, Iowa where Gil worked on a farm. Dianne Ray joined the family on September 29,1947. After living and working on several farms in the Winterset, Iowa area, they moved to Bedford in 1954 to manage a nursing home. Later Ruby was a cook at the Main Street Cafe until she and Gil moved to Warrensburg, Missouri to be house-parents at one of the boy's dorms at the college. For years, Ruby and Gil were well known for their candy they lovingly made each Christmas, a treat they always shared with many in the community. Over the years, Ruby made cinnamon and butterscotch rolls that were delivered all around town to some very lucky and special people. Ruby also blessed her friends with their favorite muffin, cake or pie on their special day.

Ruby was an active member of the Rebekah Lodge for over forty years, along with being an active member of American Legion Auxiliary for over 50 years, until ill health forced her to enter the Bedford Nursing & Rehab Center in June of 2002. Ruby held many offices and positions for both organizations during the years and received the Declaration of Chivalry from the Rebekah's. She was also a faithful member of the United Christian Presbyterian Church and later the Berea Church.

Ruby was always a busy lady and had a very active lifestyle. We always joked with her about needing an ‘answering machine and appointment book' so her family could talk to her and see her! She volunteered for many years at the nursing home, blood bank and the meal site. She enjoyed visiting with others and sharing stories of families and friends.

Ruby always had a green thumb for flowers and plants. She loved her African Violets and butterflies, and kept herself busy with crocheting. She could play a mean hand of Pitch and Skipbo. However, Ruby's true passion in life was her family and many friends; she especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Left to cherish Ruby's memory are her three children, Bart Gilreath and wife Connie of Bedford; Sharilyn Gilreath of Littleton, Colorado; and Dianne Freeman and husband Butch of Carson, Iowa; five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; two step-great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law Ruth Faubion; along with several nieces, nephews, cousins and many, many SPECIAL friends.

[YOUNG, MARGARET E. ASH]

Margaret Young

Funeral services for Margaret Young were held Monday, December 29, 1997 at 2:00 p.m. at the Novinger Taylor Funeral Home, Bedford, Iowa. Burial was at Fairview Cemetery in Bedford. Rev. Ted DeHass was the minister.

Margaret E. (Ash) Young was the daughter of Hiram Samuel Ash and Ida Isabel (Peltier) Ash. She was born in Bedford on March 11, 1903 and departed this life on December 20, 1997 in Columbus, Ohio at the age of 94 years.

She grew to maturity in Bedford where she attended the public school and the Presbyterian Church. Attending    Simpson College, she met her future husband Guy, and she graduated from the University of Iowa.

On June 25 [24], 1925 she married Lewis Guy Young at Bedford, Iowa and they lived in Iowa, New York, Oklahoma, and Japan. To this union two children were born: Katherine Louise (Pat) and Margaret Ann (Peg).

Margaret lived a full and interesting life.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Left to cherish her memory are: her daughters and their husbands, Pat and Les Gates of Carbondale, Illinois and Peg and Al Rosenfield of Columbus, Ohio; six grandchildren, five great grandchildren; her sister, Helen R. Anderson of Red Oak, Iowa; three nephews and two nieces.

Margaret was a member of the Bedford Presbyterian Church, the PEO, the Fortnightly Club, The American Legion Auxiliary and Eastern Star.

She was a warm and witty wife, mother and friend and will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Margaret was a warm, wry, competent       and       sometimes surprisingly independent person.

She learned to drive a car at age 13, was reprimanded for wearing her gym bloomers above her knees during college cleanup day, and neglected to tell her parents that she had changed her college major from music to English until they showed up for graduation.

Long before such things were "done", she supported Guy during his last year of college. While they were teaching in Danville, they sneaked into Burlington to dance and had to leave via the fire escape when one of the school board members showed up. When Guy went into the Air Force in World War II, she coped with two daughters, helped her aging parents run the telephone company and managed two farms. She willingly undertook trips that were adventures: to Washington, D.C. in an ancient overheating Pontiac; to Seattle via the "scenic" route (Oklahoma and San Diego) to go to Japan.

She flabbergasted her daughters when she and her sister fell into uncontrollable giggles; she stopped Guy in his tracks when he remarked that "We don't need a women's movement" - - her response was a terse "Oh yes we do!" When coming out of the anesthesia after surgery in the 1980's, she reduced a nurse to speechlessness, the nurse was asking her name, the date and others questions to check her consciousness, and asked her - "Who is the President?" Margaret's clear response was "I don't let that name pass my lips".

She really liked people, and it showed. The house was always open to all her daughters' friends; she not only loved but liked her relatives; she would get down on the floor and play with the little ones and would listen to and take seriously the older ones. She was a great role model, demonstrating that you could have firm opinions but could still have a civil, pleasant discussion. She was loyal and sweet, but it was well to remember the Revolutionary motto, "Don't tread on me" if you decided to take her on on a matter of principle. She wasn't perfect, but she was a perfect mother, and she "mothered" as many of us as she could reach.

Towards the end her short-term memory sometimes failed, but amazingly, she was always right there when it was news from friends and family. She listened to the news from the Times Press and laughed with Hope's column.

Her old friends were so dear to her that she would dream about them and believe they had been to visit her.

Her dearest wish was to come home to Bedford, and now she has.
