OBITUARY.
Samuel D. Churchill.
Samuel D. Churchill died at his home in Gravity Saturday, after an
illness of about one week of paralysis. Funeral services were held at 10:30
o'clock Sunday, conducted by Rev. W. L. Dunlavy, interment being in the Gravity
cemetery. He was 85 years of age.
Mr. Churchill was born at Mentor, Ohio, March 5, 1827. He
resided at his birthplace until the days of his early youth, when, like all of
the male members of his family, he took to the waters, where by his
twenty-first year he had climbed through the various gradations of cabin boy,
cook, stevedore, able-seaman, second mate, first mate and sailing master. He
married Miss Serena Macomber in 1847
and forsook the waters as sailor and became a farmer and woodman. In 1853 he
moved with his family to southwestern Michigan, where he resided two years. In
1855 he moved farther west, locating in this county, where he resided until
death. As two of the pioneers of Washington Township they suffered the
privations and hardships common to early settlers. So far as is known this old
couple at the time of his death had lived as husband and wife longer in this
county than any other couple in the county, representing over fifty-seven years
of residence in Taylor County.
To
this union were born two sons and one daughter, G. [eorge] W. Churchill of Lenox, Mrs. Ella M. Brookman of Gravity, and Charles, who died at the age of 3 years.
Mr. Churchill accepted Christianity in about 1856 and united
with the Missionary Baptist church under the preaching of Uncle Jimmy Smith,
and became one of the charter members of the First Baptist church of Haden
Grove.
Surviving
are two children, eleven grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren.
