Last
rites for Mrs. Cora Byrn of
Bedford were held at the Shum Funeral Home Friday afternoon, January 28, Rev.
G. R. McGahaey of Clarinda officiating. Burial in the Athelstan cemetery.
Cora
Morris, daughter of James
[Henry] and Kathryn [Caroline West] Morris, was born March 18, 1874 at Old Memory, Iowa, now known as New
Market, and died January 28, 1958, in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Roy
Armstrong of Bedford, at the age
of 83 years, 10 months, 10 days.
She
was married to Perry Byrn February 18, 1893 at Bedford. To them two children were born.
She
was preceded in death by her husband, who died December 15, 1945; one
granddaughter, Mrs. Pauline Hoops on June 8, 1950; also six brothers.
She
leaves to mourn her passing one daughter, Tina; her son, Vernie of Athelstan; six grandchildren, eight great
grandchildren; two brothers, Jess Morris of Conway, Walter Morris of Parnell, Mo.
Mrs.
Byrn spent all of her life near
Athelstan, Sheridan and Bedford. She became a Christian early in life and
united with the Methodist church at Maple Grove. Some time later she joined the
Assembly of God.

Mrs.
Perry Byrns [Byrn], 84, died at
the Armstrong Nursing Home in Bedford late Tuesday afternoon, January 28. She
is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Roy Armstrong of Bedford; and by a son, Vernie Byrns of Athelstan. There are several grandchildren.
Funeral
services will be at the Shum Funeral Home at two o'clock Friday afternoon. Rev.
G. R. McGhghy of Clarinda will officiate. Burial in Athelstan cemetery.

following an illness of several months.

funeral services were held at the Walker-Shum Funeral Home Tuesday afternoon,

little son of Mr. and Mrs. Vern Byrn of near Sheridan, who has been seriously ill, died Wednesday of last
week.

Kenneth Byrns, son of Vernie
and Eva [Marie Black] Byrns, was
born October 13, 1924, in Taylor County, Iowa, and departed this life October
11, 1926, age 1 year, 9 months and 28 days. He leaves to mourn, his father and
mother and brother Ottis,
besides grandparents and a host of relatives and friends. Little Doyle is at rest, he has gone to be with his Lord. He
was a loving child, patient and kind through his sickness, and always had a
smile for everybody. Funeral services were conducted at the Athelstan Baptist
church by Bro. Elmer Trullinger. Burial was made at the Athelstan cemetery. The
pallbearers consisted of four little girls, Vivian McKim, Florian London,
Clarice Wilson and Georgia Glass. The singers were Mr. Earl Nallie and daughter
Ethel, Miss Blanch Glass and Mr. Joe Bird. Pianist, Miss Beulah Miller, all of
Hopkins, Mo.

small son of Mr. and Mrs. Vernie Berns [Doyle Kenneth Byrns] passed away Wednesday, August 11, at 12 o'clock.
Funeral services were held at the Baptist church in Athelstan. Interment was
made in the Athelstan cemetery. The bereaved family have the sympathy of the
entire community.

Marie Byrns, daughter of William
Glen Black and Elizabeth
(Williams) Black was born in
Worth County September 12, 1902 and departed this life June 5, 1998 at the
Clearview Nursing Home at Mt. Ayr, IA at the age of 95 years, 6 months and 24
days.
She
lived in Worth and Taylor Counties and grew to maturity in this area. She
attended the public schools and Holiness Church at Athelstan, IA, where she was
a member.
On
November 12, 1919 she was united in marriage to Vernie Warren Byrns at Bedford, IA and they lived in Taylor County.
To
this union five children were born, Ottis, Doyle, Wilbur, Leona and Marilyn.
Eva was a hard working loving
wife and mother. She enjoyed her garden, flowers and yard work. She was always
interested in her children and their extended families and enjoyed being with
them at family gatherings.
She
was preceded in death by her parents, William Glen and Elizabeth Black; husband, Vernie Byrns; son Doyle; one sister, Verna Jenkins; three brothers, Roy, Ermil and Ray Black.
Left
to cherish her memory are her children, Ottis and wife Dorothy Byrns, Clarinda, Iowa; Wilbur and wife Betty Byrns, Grant City, Missouri; Leona and husband Clyde Stephenson, Bedford, Iowa; Marilyn and husband Robert Loghry, Sloan, Iowa; 8 grandchildren; 13 great
grandchildren; 4 step great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild.
She
will be sadly missed by her family and friends. Funeral services were at
Novinger Taylor Funeral Home at Bedford, Iowa on June 8, 1998. Rev. Bob
McCutcheon was in charge of the service with burial in the Athelstan Cemetery.

services for Vernie W. Byrns,
long time Taylor County resident, held Feb. 1 with military honors in the
Athelstan Community Church, were conducted by Rev. L. B. Day of Maryville.
Interment was in the Athelstan cemetery, Athelstan, Ia.

30, 1894 at Sheridan, Mo., the son of Perry [Warren] and Cora [Morris] Byrns and departed this life at Ringgold County
Hospital at Mount Ayr, Iowa, Jan. 30, 1963 at the age of 68 years and 1 month.
On
Nov. 12, 1919 he was united in marriage to Eva Marie Black. To this union five children were born. Left to
mourn their loss are his wife, Eva;
a son, Ottis Lavern, and his
wife, Dorothy, Ankeny, Ia.; Wilbur
Dean and wife, Betty, Grant City, Mo.; Leona Mae Stephenson and husband, Clyde Lee, Bedford, Ia.; and Marilyn Marie Loghry and husband, Robert, of Sioux City, Ia. Also surviving are six
grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Tina Armstrong and husband, Roy, of Bedford, Ia., and nieces and nephews.
Preceding
him in death were his parents and one infant son, Doyle Kenneth.
Mr.
Byrns spent most of his life in
Taylor County, the greater part of which time he was employed as a bridge
foreman by Taylor County.
Having
served in World War I, he was a member of the Blockton V. F. W. Post 443.
When
a young man he joined the Methodist church near Sheridan, Mo.
Having
lived a full and active life, he will be missed by all who learned to know him.

Elvin
E. [noch] Campbell, son of [John] Frank [lin] and Mary E. [lizabeth Kauble] Campbell, was born in Taylor County, Ia., March 9, 1905,
and departed this life at the hospital in Clarinda, Ia., Sept. 7, 1930, aged 25
years, 5 months and 28 days. He was preceeded in death by his father in April
1927. He leaves to mourn his departure, his mother, four sisters and five
brothers: B. W. Campbell,
LeLoupe, Kans.; Mrs. J. R. Freemyer,
Bedford; Mrs. Glen Stroberg,
Blockton; Mrs. G. I. Streebin,
Ottawa, Kans.; and Noble, Ward, Nina, Paul and Ola at home. Besides these, he leaves a host of other
relatives and friends, as was testified to by the very large concourse of
people attending the services. He was converted and united with the Athelstan
Baptist church in the fall of 1926. He was a young man of high character and
well respected by all who knew him.
The
funeral services were held at the Athelstan Baptist church Sept. 8, 1930
conducted by Challie E. Graham, and the remains laid to rest in the Athelstan
cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his father in April 1927. He leaves to mourn his departure, his mother, four sisters and five brothers, B. [asil] W. [arren] Campbell of LeLoup, Kansas; Mrs. J. R. Freemyer of Bedford; Mrs. Glenn Stroburg of Blockton; Mrs. G. [eorge] I. [van] Streebin of Ottawa, Kansas and Noble, Ward, Nina, Paul and Ola at home. Besides these, he leaves a host of other relatives and friends, as was witnessed to by the large concourse of people attending the services.
He was converted and united with Athelstan Baptist church in the fall of 1926. He was a young man of high character and well respected by all who knew him. After all, this life's highest attainment. The heartfelt sympathy of the entire community goes out to the sorrowing ones in this hour of their bereavement.
The funeral services were held in the Athelstan Baptist church Sept. 8, conducted by Challie E. Graham and the remains laid to rest in the Athelstan cemetery. The music was furnished by Miss Jean Freeland, Mrs. Guy Graham, and Marion and Calvin Jenkins, with Mrs. F. A. Freeland presiding at the piano. The hymns sung were "The Print of the Nails," "Face to Face" and "Shall We Meet?" The pall bearers were Frank Sickels, Ira Kemery, Otha Fidler, Ralph Scott, Dale Fidler, and Guy Irvin.

Noble
J. [osie] Campbell, age 90 of
Creston, formerly of Cromwell died Friday, March 6, 1998 at Creston Nursing and
Rehab Center in Creston, Iowa.
Funeral
services were held March 10 at Powers Funeral Home in Creston with Rev. Dana
Wendel and Rev. Lee Gamblin officiating. Burial was in the Athelstan Cemetery,
Athelstan, Iowa.
Noble was born May 12, 1907 at Athelstan, Iowa to John
Frank [lin] Campbell and Mary
Elizabeth Kauble. He was educated
at Athelstan area schools. On July 27, 1930 in Taylor County, Iowa he was
married to Ola Thelma Barnes. Noble farmed in Taylor, Union and Adams counties. In 1944 they settled near Cromwell
and then moved into Cromwell in 1956 where they lived until moving into the
Creston Nursing and Rehab Center in September of 1997. Noble was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in
Creston.
Survivors
include his wife Thelma Campbell of Creston; four daughters, Irene (husband William) Conkling of

Thelma
Campbell, age 85 of Creston died
March 13, 1999. Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 16, 1999 at Powers
Funeral Home in Creston with burial in the Athelstan Cemetery. Rev. Lee Gamblin
and Rev. Dana Wendel officiated. Powers Funeral Home of Creston was in charge
of arrangements.

Thelma was born June 28, 1913 at
Athelstan, Iowa to Charles Augustus Barnes and Ola Mae Webster. She was educated in Athelstan Schools. Thelma married Noble Josie Campbell on July 27, 1930 in Athelstan.
She
was a homemaker and lived most of her life in Cromwell, Iowa until 1997 when
she moved to Creston Nursing and Rehab Center. She was [an] actively involved
member of Creston Church of Nazarene.
Survivors
include sons: Francis Campbell (wife Sharon) Omaha, NE; Lenis
Campbell (wife Janet) Omaha,
NE; Oren Campbell (wife Barbara), Phoenix, AZ; and Merrill Campbell (wife Donna) Colorado Springs, CO; daughters: Irene Conkling, Lincoln, NE; Wilma Gamblin (husband Lee), Clarion, IA; Marian Drake (husband Ken),

services for Vernon M. [Mortimer],
80, of Athelstan were held September 10 at Prugh-Dunfee Funeral Home in Grant
City conducted by Rev. Delbert Behler [?]. Mr. Chandler died September 7 in Ringgold County Hospital in
Mt. Ayr. Interment was at Hobbs Cemetery, Excelsior, Mo.
Vernon, the oldest son of Charles H. and Samantha
[Ellen Reynolds] Chandler, was
born November 20, 1887, near Des Moines, Iowa. As a child, his family moved to
Missouri. He lived around Eagleville, Missouri until 1894 when he moved to
Athelstan, Iowa, where he spent the rest of his life.
On
September 5, 1913, he was married to Viola B. [elle] Chandler and they were the parents of four children. One
son, Evert Wayne, and one
daughter, Wilma Captola, died
in infancy.
Thos
who survive him include his wife, Viola, of Athelstan, Iowa; his children, Victor Chandler of Sheridan, Missouri, and Mrs. Maxine Rusco, of Sheridan, one son-in-law, Leonard Rusco; one daughter–in-law, LaVon; eight grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren;
and two brothers, August Chandler of Eagleville, Missouri, and Clifford Chandler of Ridgeway, Missouri.
His
parents and one brother, Monty Chandler, preceded him in death.

Chandler died November 9, 1989 in
Mt. Ayr, Iowa.
Viola
Belle Chandler, daughter of John
W. [illiam] and Viola J. [ane] Parish [Parris] Booher, was born in rural Taylor County, Iowa November
20, 1894. She was a resident of the Mount Ayr Health Care Center.
She
married Vernon Marty Chandler and to this union four children were born: Victor, Everett Wayne, Roberta
Maxine, and Wilma Captola.
Viola and Vernon lived near Eagleville, Mo., later moving on to Des Moines, Iowa
before settling in Athelstan, Iowa. Viola was a member of the Assembly of God church.
She
devoted her life working as a homemaker and practical nurse. In her later years
she cared for the elderly in their homes.
She
was preceded in death by her parents, John and Viola, her
husband, Vernon, her son Everett, her daughter Wilma, two grandsons, Jerry Chandler and Lowell Rusco, six brothers, George, Guy, Paul, James, John
and Charles; five sisters, Carrie,
Dora, Madge, Mary and Christa and two brothers who died in infancy and were not
named.
Left
to cherish her memory are her son, Victor Chandler of Mt. Ayr, Iowa; her daughter, Roberta Maxine Rusco of Bedford; her brother, Virgil Booher of Grand Junction, Co.; several grandchildren,
great grandchildren and great great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews
and friends.

Edwin
Jamison Crane, son of Henry
Mills and Cordelia Jamison Crane, was born May 18, 1908, at Clearmont, Mo., and
died December 17, 1954 at Madison county hospital in Winterset, Iowa.
He
attended Northwest Missouri state college and graduated from Iowa State
College, Ames, with the Bachelor of Science and the Master of Science degrees.
His major field was chemistry.
Later
he became Interested in radio and obtained a first class radio telephone
license. During World War II he taught radio in an army school In Kansas City.
In
1933 he was married to Jean Freeland and since his wife's interest was also in science they worked hand
in hand in many projects, he often building special pieces of equipment for her
use in teaching.
From
1940 until his illness in 1952 he operated the farmstead southwest of
Athelstan. When he became ill he gave up farming and went to Creston, where his
wife was employed as a teacher. This fall he was teaching a class in Modern
Science in the evening school for adults at Creston. During the day he repaired
radios, built equipment or helped Jean in the laboratory at the high school.
His
parents and one sister preceded him in death. He leaves his wife, two brothers: Ludlow Crane of Cedar Rapids
and Frank Crane of Atchison,
Kans.
Funeral
services were conducted from the Holiness church in Athelstan, Dec. 20 by Rev.
Ward Campbell of Mount Ayr. Burial in Athelstan cemetery.
