An Old Settler Dead
And
still another old settler has been called from this earth to join the great
majority over on the other shore. Sam Norton died at his home near Old Lexington Saturday
morning, January 28, at 3:30 o'clock, aged 48 years and 3 days.
He
had been sick for some time with catarrh of the stomach and bowels, and his
death was no surprise. He leaves a wife and six children, the youngest under a
year old and the eldest under twelve, in destitute circumstances, but He who
has said, "I will be a father to the fatherless" will watch over and
care for them. Already has the
loving hand of charity been extended, and present needs have been supplied by
kind and sympathizing friends, and we doubt not their every necessity will be
supplied.
The
funeral services were conducted at the home by Elder Lee Furgeson. Interment in

Death of Samuel
Norton
From Saturday’s Daily
Samuel
H. Norton, an old settler of
Taylor County, died at his home near Old Lexington this morning at 3:30
o’clock, of heart failure, brought on by catarrh of the stomach and bowels; age
48 years and 3 days.
The
funeral will be held at the residence Monday at 2 p. m., conducted by Rev.
Ferguson. Interment at Lexington
cemetery.
Death
at any time is sad. In the bloom
of health, the shroud, the pall, the funeral knell can only be contemplated
with the utmost horror. But more
sad and sorrowful yet is dissolution when it robs a wife and mother of her
companion and support, and takes from helpless innocent little ones the only
bulwark between them and poverty, and casts them helpless upon the cold charity
of the world.
A
few short months ago the fireside of Samuel Norton was a happy one. Today a sorrowing wife mourns and calls in vain for her
departed companion, while six little children, none of whom are scarcely old
enough to realize their loss, plead for a kind papa they will never again see. It is indeed a sorrowful case, and this
life to them looks bleak and comfortless.
The
world is usually a selfish and sordid one, but such a case as this is enough to
wring words of sympathy and acts of kindness from all whose hearts are not
entirely of flint.
If
ever there was a case deserving of charity it is this. Six little children, ranging in age
from nine to less than a year; a widow with no way on earth to make a penny; no
property of any sort that could be sold, and not one dollar to her name. Besides all this the widow is lame---a
cripple for life.
Foreign
missions, home missions, all other charities in our country and abroad, all are
commendable. But this is a case in
our own neighborhood, and if these little ones go hungry to bed, or their little
pleading faces grow pinched with the cold for want of proper clothing, the
responsibility is ours and we can not dodge it.
Here
is a case where you can show the size of your heart by the way you go into your
pocketbook. Think of your own
little ones, safe and happy in a well provided home and think of them were they
in the condition of these poor little orphans, fatherless, homeless,
penniless. Think of all these
things and think well. Then forget
self and be a MAN.
Remember
this, sometime each and every one of us will be where Samuel Norton is today, facing the great white throne whereon
sits Him who said “In as much as ye did it not unto the least of these, ye did
it not unto me.”

Funeral of Samuel Norton
The funeral of Samuel Norton who died Saturday morning, occurred at the home near old Lexington at 2 o'clock this afternoon conducted by Elder Furgeson. Considering the weather, the attendance was quite large. The usually sad circumstances connected with the death of the bread winner of a large and helpless family, together with the high respect in which the deceased was held, caused the friends and neighbors to turn out in large numbers to pay to the departed friend the last token of respect and to show their sympathy for the bereaved. Interment was made at Lexington cemetery.
