OBITUArYJohn Knott was born in Peoria, Illinois in 1836 and in 1857 was married to [Rachel] Clarinda Dickenson [Dickerson] near Peoria. Some time later they moved to the community which now surrounds Sharpsburg and bought a farm where they have lived ever since. That was before Sharpsburg or even the railroad existed here. To this happy union was born eight children, four boys and four girls of which there remains to mourn the loss of a kind father William [Isaac] Knott the only son living, Mrs. Anna Boyden, Mrs. Carrie [Belle] Aram and Mrs. Minnie Boyer and the wife who has toiled up life's hillside with him. Mr. Knott passed away Monday morning March 30th about 9 o'clock being over 71 years of age. Mr. Knott was an energetic businessman and accumulated considerable land, which remains unencumbered to his family. Mr. Knott left a host of friends to regret the loss of a citizen and neighbor such as he was.

The large attendance at the funeral attested to the regard in which Mr. Knott was held by those who had known him for years. The house was filled at Sharpsburg as was the church at Blue Grove where services were held conducted by Rev. Corbett, pastor, assisted by Rev. Giddens of the M. E. church and Rev. Walton of the Presbyterian.

Mr. Knott was a member of the Church of Christ for forty-seven years having united with that church near Peoria at the age of 24 transferring his membership to Blue Grove after moving to this community. Interment was made in the Grove Township Cemetery.

Rachel Dickerson Knott

Rachel Clarinda Dickerson was born in Peoria County, Illinois, on December 1, 1841, and passed away at her home in Sharpsburg, Iowa, Sept. 21, 1926, aged 84 years, 9 months and 20 days. She grew to womanhood in Illinois, where she was married to John Knott on Jan. 17, 1857. To this union were born eight children, four of whom died in infancy. One son, William [Isaac] Knott preceeded his mother in death three years. The husband, John Knott, died March 30, 1908. The deceased came with her husband to Taylor county, Iowa, in 1879, having lived on the farm now occupied by Walter Scott until 20 years ago, when they moved to Sharpsburg, making that her home until the death angel called her home to dwell with the angels. She united with the Christian church in Illinois when she was 20 years of age. At the time of her death her membership was with the Blue Grove Christian church. She leaves to mourn her passing, three daughters, Annie, wife of W. [illiam] H. [enry] Boyden, Carrie [Belle], wife of Arthur Aram, and Minnie, wife of the late Otis Boyer; one brother, James Dickerson, who has made his home with his sister, Mrs. Knott, since her marriage (their mother passed away when Mrs. Knott was aged 12 and James was a year old); her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Ella Knott; 11 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. In addition is a host of other relatives and friends. She was of a kind lovable disposition, making friends wherever she was known. She was especially fond of children and they in turn seemed to be attracted to her. Always desiring to see everyone happy, she could not bear to hear a cross word spoken by anyone. She had been in ill health for eight years and required constant care during the last three years. Having lived a long time in this land of trouble and suffering she has gone on to that reward in which there is no disappointment. During her late suffering she would go about the house repeating scripture and singing her favorite song, "Sweet prospect, sweet birds and sweet flowers have all lost their sweetness to me."

Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian Church at Sharpsburg, Sept. 23rd, at 2:00 p. m., and the body was laid to rest in the Grove Center Cemetery.

Four Pioneers Dead

Death has claimed in the past few days four pioneer citizens of Gravity and the nearby vicinity. They were Abednego Davis of Gravity, E. [dward] W. [illiam] Moore of Washington Township, Thomas Laird, a former old resident, who died Tuesday at his home at Auburndale, Florida, and Thursday, Rev. W. [illiam] L.[ee] Dunlavy, at the Ensworth hospital, St. Joseph, where he was taken for an operation last week.

Mr. Davis was 92 years old at the time of his death and settled here, in the vicinity of Hawleyville in 1856. Mr. Moore, who was 81 years old, also settled here in 1856, coming with his parents. Mr. Laird was an old resident, but the date of his settling in the county is not obtainable.

The old pioneers, whose lives link the present with the misty past are fast disappearing, and soon the youth will know of the early life in our state and nation as it is handed down by history and tradition. Abednego Davis lived all through the development epoch of our country and from him could be obtained much of our history first hands. In his life time steam navigation, the railroad train, the telegraph, and the development of electrical knowledge to the application of the mysterious fluid to the motive power of engines, furnishing light and the carrying of the human voice long distances.

In every avenue of endeavor the changes have all been watched by this man just dead. It is with sorrow we chronicle the passing of these old and revered citizens.

Edward Moore, 83 Final Rites Held December 12

Funeral services for Edward William Moore, 83, of Bedford, formerly of Conway, were held December 12 in Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford with Rev. Dwayne E. Madsen officiating. Mr. Moore died in Bedford Manor December 9, 1977. Bedford American Legion Post No. 164 officiated the flag presentation at Washington Cemetery, Gravity.

Edward W. [illiam] Moore, son of Ira [Alvin] and Cenia [Riley] Moore, was born at Gravity, Iowa October 12, 1894. He lived in Taylor County where he grew to maturity, attended the public school and Gravity Christian Church.

On October 17, 1923 he was united in marriage to Mary J. [ulianna] Sauter at Pontiac, Ill. and they lived in Taylor County, Iowa. He was engaged in farming.

Mr. Moore was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and eight sisters and brothers.

Left to cherish his memory are: two sons, Edward Dean Moore and wife, Colleen, of Polk City, Ia. and Kenneth L. [averne] Moore and wife, Naomi, of Bedford; a sister, Lucille Burrell of Clarinda; a brother, Alvin Moore of Nebraska City, Nebr.; three grandchildren, Carole Dean, Bill and Kelly; six great grandchildren; nieces; nephews; other relatives and many friends.

His sons remember him as a man who always worked hard and was very honest.

Our minds return at this season on other and far different fields of this area. We see a man hitching up his team to go out into the cornfield to harvest. He is heavily dressed against the autumn cold, and his voice rings out clear and sharp across the frozen ground.

Reaching the end of the first two rows, he calls to his horses to stop, then grasping the first ear of corn, he rips it from the stalk, quickly strips away the husks and launches it into the air where like a golden stick it rings against the back-board of the wagon. These are the pioneers who helped give us our world. We do well in pausing to give honor to one whose life has crossed two centuries and now has gone to his rest.

Obituary—Mary E. Moore

Last Friday morning our entire community was brought under the shadow of gloom when we learned of the sudden death of Mrs. Mary E. [tta Ogden] Moore, who was taken seriously ill on Sunday before, from which she found no relief. Although the best medical aid was procured until her spirit took its flight to the unseen world—to mortal eyes, which released her from her sufferings with pneumonia.

Mrs. Moore was naturally endowed with excellent qualities that gave her a prominent place in the hearts of the people with whom she had to do in life.

Since January 7, 1887, she has walked with G. [reen] B. [erry] Moore as her husband, sharing equally her portion of the cares and sorrows of life with unfaltering determination, until a beautiful home three miles west of Gravity had been secured which would seem to furnish them with one of the principle things for happiness. But, alas! how uncertain are the temporal things of this life. That dread enemy death called her hence at an unexpected hour, and now her beautiful home is draped in the mantle of sorrow and the peace and tranquility that once prevailed in that home is now turned into weeping and loneliness. The mother of ten children (with one of that number having crossed the river of death), leaving a broken-hearted husband and nine children to mourn her departure, with a host of sympathizing friends.

She was born in Davis County, Iowa, January 7, 1868, being 40 years old at the time of her death.

The funeral services were held at the Christian church in Gravity on the following Sunday at 11 o'clock, conducted by the writer, assisted by Rev. Babcock, after which the remains were followed to the Gravity cemetery by a very large funeral delegation, led by about thirty Modern Woodmen, who in regular order marched to her last resting place.

There were present at the funeral, of her original family, her mother, Mrs. Caroline [Hanshaw] Ogden and four brothers as follows: Orlando and Ross of Unionville, Iowa; C. [harles] A. [ugustus], of Des Moines, Iowa, and J. [esse] J., of Pierce, Colorado.

The family have the entire sympathy of the community.
