AN OLD SETTLER GONE
John Woodyard Passes Away After Six Months Illness
John
M. [arion] Woodyard died at his
home in Mason township Sunday morning at 5:40, of cirrhosis of the liver after
an illness extending over many months, aged 67 years, 2 months and 13 days.
Mr.
Woodyard, had he lived but
twenty-five days longer would have been for a quarter of a century a resident
of Taylor County. He was born in West Virginia, and made his home there until a
man of 34. He then decided to seek his fortune in the great Middle West and
moved to Iowa, settling near New Sharon in Mahaska County, thirty-three years
ago. He spent eight years there and then moved to Taylor County, settling on
the farm in Mason Township where he spent the remainder of his life.
Mr.
Woodyard was a man of good
habits, a good neighbor, a kind friend, a devoted husband and father, and his
loss is felt by all throughout the community where he was known.
When
the war broke out Mr. Woodyard was living in West Virginia and enlisted in the 12th infantry from
that state. He was soon promoted to corporal and as such served during the
three years of the war. His war life was one of active service, and he
participated in many of the bloodiest battles of the great Rebellion, and was
present at the closing scene at Appomattox when Lee surrendered to Grant.
As
a soldier he was brave, courageous and faithful, and his war record is one of
which his descendants may well be proud.
A
widow and four children remain to mourn him. The children are all grown to
maturity, and two are married, but all reside in this county. One brother and
one sister survive him. His brother T. [homas] E. [hud] Woodyard arrived here Sunday from his home near Grafton,
West Va., and will remain until after the funeral. The sister also resides in
West Virginia.
The
funeral services, conducted by Rev. Thompson of Bedford and Rev. Farley of
Gravity, were held at the home today at 11 a. m. Interment at Fairview
cemetery.

Woodyard.
Marguerite
Lucile Woodyard, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Arthur Woodyard, was
born Sept. 13, 1907, on a farm near Gravity, Iowa. Here she grew to young
womanhood until her death May 8, 1924.
For
more than two years she had been afflicted with the malady which resulted in
death, but through it all she was always patient.
Marguerite was of a very quiet and retiring disposition and
because of this never had much to say as to the way she felt, or whether or not
she expected to recover. She loved to go to church and Sabbath School and while
never having openly confessed her Lord, yet many things during her illness
indicated that she was ready to meet Him in peace.
About
6:30 in the morning she was awake and again fell asleep from which she never
awakened. Death came unannounced and unobserved about 10 o'clock to take away
the soul of this frail sufferer at the age of 16 years, 7 months and 5 days.
She
leaves to mourn her untimely death her father, mother, two grandmothers, four
sisters, 9 uncles, 7 aunts and a host of other relatives and friends.
The
funeral was held from the Gilead M. E. Church Saturday, at 2 o'clock in the
afternoon, conducted by the pastor, J. R. McNichols. Interment was made in the
Clarinda cemetery.
