B.
[enjamin] F. [ranklin] Garrard,
whose illness was mentioned last week, passed away Saturday evening between 9
and 10 o'clock. He was 81 years of age. His children, Wayne [Sill] Garrard of Guide Rock, Nebraska, and Mrs. Maude
Rochholz and husband of Wilton
Junction, came the first of the week. Funeral services were held at the church
yesterday afternoon at 2:30, conducted by Rev. W. H. Warrior.

Obituary
Benjamin
Franklin Garrard was born in
Vandalia, Indiana, July 3, 1856, and passed away at his home in Blockton Dec.
11, 1937, at the age of 81 years, 5 months and 8 days.
At
the age of 14 years he moved with his parents to Nodaway County, Mo.
On
Sept, 2,1882, he was married to Miss Ida Jane Still [Sill]. To this union 5 children were born: Everett
[Beamus], who died in service
during the World war; Leonard [Roach], who died in 1922, and one son [George Alford] died in infancy. Surviving are Mrs. Maude
Rochholz of Wilton Junction, and Wayne
[Sill] of Guide Rock, Nebr.
In
1910 they moved to Iowa, to a farm northwest of Blockton, and in 1915 moved to
Blockton.
The
wife and mother died in May 1926.
Mr.
Garrard became a Christian and
joined the Baptist church when young in life and after coming to Blockton
transferred his membership to the Methodist church.
In
June 1927, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Mary [Elizabeth Hobson Hoar] Bomberger of Rea, Mo. She passed away in
Dec. 1935.
He
leaves to mourn his departure the two children, three grandchildren, four
brothers, William, Walter and John Garrard of Nodaway County, Mo., and Robert Garrard of Guide Rock, Nebr., and a host of other
relatives and friends.
Funeral
services were held at the Blockton Methodist church at 2:30 Wednesday
afternoon, conducted by Rev. W. H. Warrior. Burial in Rose Hill cemetery, Blockton.

Everett Garrard Dead
Everett Beamus Garrard, son of Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Garrard, passed away at St. Luke's Hospital, Kansas City, Missouri, yesterday morning after an illness of several weeks.
The body will arrive in Blockton today and the funeral services will be held in the park tomorrow morning at 9 o'clock, conducted by Rev. E. J. Laird, assisted by Rev. N. B. Sill, of Darlington, Missouri, an uncle of the deceased. Interment will be made in Rose Hill cemetery.
When the call was made last spring for volunteers to attend an auto training school Mr. Garrard was among the first, if not the first, to volunteer. He enlisted at Bedford on April 5th and was sent to Kansas City where he was placed in Co. B, Sweeney Auto School Training Department, of the National Army. Later he became ill and was taken to a hospital and before he was fully recovered, he suffered a severe attack of pneumonia from which he failed to recover.
Mr. Garrard was the first Blockton boy to give his all in the present world war.

Wayne Garrard and wife returned to their home at Guide Rock, Nebraska Monday morning, having been called here by the death of his brother, Everett.
Mrs. Alice Shepherd, of Clarksville; Mrs. Gertie Raleigh, of Marion, and Mrs. Earl Shepherd, of Conrad, returned to their home Monday afternoon after attending the funeral of their nephew, Everett Garrard.
Among the relatives and friends, not mentioned elsewhere, attending the funeral of the late Everett Garrard here Saturday were William, Robert, Ernest, Laura and Lizzie Garrard, of Parnell; Samuel Garrard, wife and daughter, Velda and Mrs. H. M. Wilson and son, Bert, of Sheridan, and J. C. Fryor and John Stagers of Ravenwood.

Everett
Beamus Garrard, son of Benjamin
[Franklin] and Ida [Jane Sill] Garrard,
was born in Nodaway County, Mo., May 19, 1895, and died at St. Luke’s hospital,
Kansas City, Mo., August 7, 1918, aged 23 years, 2 months and 19 days.
Everett enlisted in Co. B, Sweeney Auto School Training,
Department of the National Army, on April 6, 1918. He was stricken with
pneumonia and taken to St. Luke’s hospital the 29th of April where
he grew worse from day to day in spite of all medical aid and kind hands could
do.
He
is the first of the Blockton boys to give his life for his country. The body was brought to Blockton on
August 8th, accompanied by his sister, Maude, who was with him during the last seven weeks of
his illness.
During
his illness he was converted and was baptized and joined the Methodist
Episcopal church. Of course, Everett would like to have lived to serve his country longer, but was
willing to abide by the Lord’s will. He had not received his uniform when he
took ill and expressed a desire to be able to wear it but the Lord [word
unreadable] the order differently and not until after his death was his wish
fulfilled. His father and two of his brothers, one of whom is in the United
States service, visited the hospital, his mother not being able [rest of
sentence unreadable] probably never would see her again on earth and for her to
meet him in heaven.
There
was a large concourse of people at the station to meet the funeral party on its
arrival here.
He
leaves to mourn his untimely death his father and mother, two brothers, Wayne [Sill]
of Guide Rock, Neb., and Leonard [Roach], who is in the United States army and stationed at San Antonio,
Texas, and one sister, Maude,
at home, besides a host of other relatives and friends.
He
was presented with a nice bouquet of flowers by his nurses and other friends
and the Blockton Chapter of the American Red Cross.
Funeral
services were held at the park Saturday afternoon at 3 o’clock, conducted by
Rev. E. J. Laird. The services were very largely attended. Interment was made
in Rose Hill cemetery.

John R. Garrard Dies At Home Near Gaynor
John
Roach Garrard, 73 years of age,
died suddenly at 8 o’clock this morning at his home, one mile south of Gaynor,
where he had resided sixty years. Mr. Garrard had been in failing health for some time.
He
was born November 3, 1869 at Spencer, Ind. and was married at Maryville on
September 26, 1893, to Miss Lillie V. Killion, who preceded him in death.
Surviving
are two daughters, Mrs. Hardie Shelman, Parnell, and Mrs. Leo Owens, Fort Blakely, Wash.; three sons, Ernest Garrard, Hopkins, Loren Garrard, Parnell, and Cpl. Harley Garrard, Camp Hood, Tex.; one brother, Walter Garrard, Sheridan; eight grandchildren and two

Obituary
Ida
Jane Sill, daughter of George
Sill and Mariah Jane Cooper, was
born in Cattaraugus County, New York, April 4, 1861, and passed away at her
home in Blockton May 8, 1926.
She
was the third of a family of 5 [?]. The family moved from New York to Wisconsin
and later to Iowa. Thence to Missouri and later to Clarksville, Iowa, which
from that time on was their home.
While
living near Gaynor City, Mo., she met Benjamin F. [ranklin] Garrard and on Sept. 10, 1882, they were united in
marriage at Pickering, that state, and went to housekeeping on the Garrard farm near there. Five children came to bless
their home: —George Alford,
who died in infancy; Wayne S. [ill], of Guide Rock, Nebr.; Maude E., of Lisbon; Leonard R.
[oach], who died in Des Moines
Oct. 31,1922; Everett [Beamus],
who died at St. Luke's hospital, Kansas City, Mo., Aug. 7, 1918, while in the
service.
The
family moved from Pickering to Kansas, later to Plattsmouth, Nebr., and back to
Missouri in 1888 where they resided until 1910 when they moved to near
Blockton. They moved to Blockton in 1916.
Mrs.
Garrard joined the Baptist church
when a young lady and on Aug. 2, 1918, united with the Blockton Methodist
church.
Her
two sons, Leonard and Everett, were both in the service, Everett dying while in the army. She was the only gold
star mother in the local American Legion Auxiliary.
She
leaves to mourn her loss, her husband; son, Wayne [Sill]; daughter, Maude; sisters, Mrs. Alice Shepherd, Clarksville, Ia.; Gertrude Bernes, Marcon, Ia.; Maggie Vanslyke, Radford, Pa.; brother, Rev. N. [elson] B.
[eamus] Sill, Darlington, Mo.;
grandchildren, May Ellen, Wilbur Scott and Vera Jane, the children of Wayne Garrard.
In
the springtime when the blossoms come again to gladden the world, God
transplanted her to his heavenly garden. A good wife, a true mother, a loyal
friend added to our increasing number of loved ones and friends that await us
in the better world.
Funeral
services were held at the Methodist church Sunday afternoon at 2:30, conducted
by Rev. J. V. Gray, assisted by Rev. H. V. Reeves, and interment was made in
Rose Hill cemetery. The American Legion Auxiliary had charge of the services at
the cemetery.

Obituary
Leonard
Roach Garrard was born in
Sheridan, Mo., May 11, 1892, and died at his home in Des Moines, Iowa, October
31, 1922, aged 30 years, 6 months and 22 days.
On
the 17th day of April 1920, he was married to Miss Esther Vespestad. This union was one of tender love and there was
a manifest devotion to each other. Through his one year of suffering, the last
11 days being spent in bed, his faithful companion was always near, ministering
and helping as only faithfulness in love can do. "Love suffereth long and
is kind.”
Mr.
Garrard answered the call to serve
his country in the time of the great World War crisis. He gave 14 months to the
service of his country where many laid down their lives for their friends.
"Greater love hath no man than this." "Whosoever would be great
among you let him be your servant."
He
was baptised in the Christian faith and joined in the fellowship of the
Methodist Episcopal church on the 11th day of August 1918, at Blockton. In
recent days he gave testimony of a stronger and renewed faith as the end drew
near. He was quiet in the peace of heart that passeth all understanding.
He
leaves to continue life in the earth a wife, mother, father, sister and brother
and many good friends.

this morning, Thursday, Dec. 26 after a lingering illness. She is survived by
her husband. One granddaughter, Mrs. J. R. Morris also resides in Blockton. She moved to Blockton
about ten years ago from Rea, Mo. The funeral arrangements have not been
completed but burial will be at Whitesville, Mo.

Warrensburg, Mo. Mr. Hoar died
Nov. 30, 1900.
She
was married to B. [enjamin] F. [ranklin] Garrard June 10, 1927. She was a member of Blockton
Methodist church, a Past Noble Grand of the Rebekah lodge at Rosendale, Mo.,
and for many years chaplain of the Blockton Rebekah lodge.
Surviving
with the husband are four grandchildren one of whom is Mrs. Beatrice Morris of Blockton. There are also three great grandchildren.

Burial was in the Brethren cemetery.

funeral arrangements for Mrs. Walter Garrard [Siberia Olive Smith], who died Tuesday morning at her home in
Sheridan, are pending the arrival of a daughter, Mrs. Jacob Shellman, from the state of Oregon tomorrow afternoon.
The
funeral will probably be held Sunday at the Brethren church west of Sheridan in
charge of Rev. L. B. Day of Pickering. Burial will be in the Brethren cemetery.
Mrs.
Garrard, 77 years of age, was
born near Worthington, Ind., October 24, 1862. She had lived at Sheridan for
several years.
Surviving
are her husband and two children, Mrs. Shellman and Mrs. Gilbert Whitney [Elda Mae] of near Sheridan.

died at Ringgold County hospital in Mount Ayr, Monday, Jan. 29, after a long
illness. She passed away on her birthday.

Jan. 31. The pastor, Rev. Ernest Leierer officiated. Burial in Rose Hill
cemetery, with military honors for Gold Star Mothers by the Blockton Legion
Auxiliary.

was born in Bloomfield, Iowa January 29, 1890. While still a small girl her
family moved to Nebraska.

was united in marriage to Wayne Sill Garrard on April 3, 1912 at Guide Rock, Nebr. She united
with the Blockton Methodist church in 1918.
She
leaves to mourn her parting, her husband, Wayne of the home in Blockton; two daughters, Mrs.
Elvin Saville [May] of Redding, Mrs. Leroy Waugh [Vera Jane] of Bedford; two sons-in-law; six grandchildren, Gary, Marcia and
Rodney Saville, Barbara, Linda and Alice Waugh; one brother, Guy Scott of Guide Rock, Nebr.; one niece, Mrs. Virgil

was united in marriage to Verna Scott on April 3, 1912 at Guide Rock, Nebr. He joined the Blockton, Iowa
Methodist Church in 1918 where he held his membership until the time of his
death.
Wayne is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Elvin
Saville (May) of Redding, Iowa;
and Mrs. Leroy Waugh (Vera) of
Bedford; six grandchildren, Gary, Marcia, and Rodney Saville, Barbara [Ann] Waugh of Des Moines, Iowa, Linda [Lee] and Alice
Waugh of Bedford; a sister, Maudie
Rochholz of Tipton, Iowa and a
large number of relatives and friends.
He
was preceded in death by his wife, Verna, who died Jan. 29, 1962; two sons, Frankie, on Dec. 16, 1918 and Wilber Scott who was killed in action in Italy on November 26,
1944; his father and mother and three brothers, Leonard, Everett and George.
In
1941 Wayne and Verna moved to Blockton, Iowa, where he lived until 18
months ago when he made his home at the Thogmartin Care and Keep Home in
Bedford.

and Mrs. Wayne S. [ill] Garrard of
Blockton received a letter from the office of the Quartermaster General of the
Army Service Forces in Washington, D. C., giving them some information on the
death of their son, Pvt. Wilber S. [cott] Garrard, who was killed in action overseas.
A
copy of the letter follows:
Acknowledgment
is made of your letter requesting information concerning your son, the late
Private Wilber S. [cott] Garrard.
The
official report of interment received in this office reveals that the remains
of your son were interred in the United States Military Cemetery, Mt. Beni,
Pietramala, Italy, Plot G, Row 11, Grave 986.
At
the outbreak of war it became necessary to adopt a policy that the remains of
our deceased military personnel cannot be returned to the United Sates until
after cessation of hostilities in all Theaters of Operation.
A
notation has been made on the official records of this office that it is your
desire to have the remains of your son returned to this country for final
interment if possible. At the proper time this office will contact the legal
next of kin regarding their wishes as to the final disposition of the remains.
With
reference to your inquiry regarding a photograph of your son's grave, please be
advised that there are no provisions whereby the War Department can furnish
photographs of individual graves, therefore, it is not possible to comply with
your request.

Wilber
(Jiggs) Scott Garrard, son of Wayne
[Sill] and Verna [Scott] Garrard,
was born near Guide Rock, Nebr., Nov. 4, 1923 and died at Campo, Eoicida,
Italy; as a Private in Co. 1, 351 Battery, 88th Division, at the age
of 21 years, 21 days.
After
coming to Blockton in 1941, Wilber received his basic education in the Blockton
High School, where he was quite popular, graduating with the class of '42. At
all times he manifested keen discernment and unusual capabilities in meeting
and solving the many problems inherent in his active place in high school
activities and sports.
On
May 10, 1944, he answered his call to service his country and was inducted at
Camp Dodge, Iowa. He received further basic training at Camp Hood, Texas; and
additional training at Fort George E. Meade, Maryland and Camp Shanks, N. Y. He
left the United States October 14, 1944 for overseas service and landed in Italy,
while serving as a member of Co. I, 51st Infantry, 88th Division. In line with these experiences and as a reward for heroic conduct, he
was authorized to wear the European African Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign
ribbon, Purple Heart Medal, and one Bronze Star for participating in the
Italian campaign.
Those
surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Garrard of Blockton; two sisters, Mrs. May Saville of Redding and Mrs. Vera [Jane] Waugh of Blockton. One brother, Frankie, died in infancy.
Funeral services were

William Garrard Dies, Funeral to Be Tuesday
William
Garrard, 83 years of age, died
last night at the county farm after being ill one week.
He
was born August 30, 1857, in Indiana and lived in Sheridan until a month ago
when he came to Maryville, where he lived a short time before going to the
county farm.
He
is survived by two brothers, Walter Garrard, Sheridan, and John [Roach] Garrard, Parnell.
Funeral
services will be at 2 o’clock tomorrow afternoon at the Orrsburg church. Burial
will be in the Orrsburg cemetery.

Friday of the death of her sister-in-law [Maude Garrard Rochholz] in Guide Rock Nebr. Mrs. Guy Balch and Mrs. Garrard left for Nebraska Friday afternoon.
