[Brown, Grace Vera Piper] Bedford Times-Press Thursday August 15, 1940 p. 8 Obituary – Mrs. Guy Brown Grace Vera Piper, daughter of Benjamin and Sarah [Jane Shepard] Piper, was born five miles north of Clarinda, April 4, 1890 and died August 7 at Kirksville, Mo. at the age of 50 years, four months and three days. The first fifteen years of her life were spent in Page County, moving to Taylor County in 1905 with her parents. On October 29, 1913 she was married to Guy R. [oy] Brown of Sharpsburg, Iowa. To them were born two children, Irene and Harold. In 1914 she united with the Methodist church of Sharpsburg which membership she retained until her death. Her faith and love for her Saviour never faltered through all her years of suffering. Besides her husband and two children, she leaves two sisters, Mrs. Stella A. Shum and her twin, Mrs. Gertie M. Weller, together with a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at the Sharpsburg Methodist church Friday afternoon conducted by Rev. B. R. Weetman. Bedford Times-Press Thursday March 11, 1948 p. 5 H. L. Carr Dies At Blockton Home H. L. Carr, prominent Blockton business man and resident for many years, died at his home there, Wednesday, March 3, at the age of 86 years, 11 months and 24 days. The funeral services were held at the Christian church in Blockton Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Mr. Stringfellow of Des Moines. Burial was in the Rose Hill cemetery at Blockton. Mr. Carr was active in the affairs of Blockton, serving 24 years as mayor of that town. He was a staunch Republican and received a great deal of pleasure serving his party and his fellowman. He was also active in county, state and church affairs. Henry Lewis Carr was born March 9, 1862 in Worth County, Missouri, east of Sheridan in a log cabin. He was married September 30, 1883 to Sarah P. [riscilla] Allen at Buffalo Grove, Buchanan County, Iowa. They came to Blockton and settled on a farm east of town in 1885, moving into Blockton in 1890. To them were born three children, Vonnie V. Carr, who passed away on December 24, 1887; Cullen B. [radford] Carr of Des Moines, Beulah M. [ay] Lester of Los Angeles, California. There are also two grandsons, Kermit B. Carr of Waterloo, Vernon P. Carr of Sioux City; and a granddaughter, Caloma Swysgood of Dothan, Alabama. Mr. Carr was a member of the Christian church and a life member of the K. of P. Lodge. In 1863 Mr. Carr’s parents and a brother moved from his place of birth to Mormontown, Blockton. His father walked to Bedford, to enlist in the army on August 11, 1863. A brother, Thomas Carr, Jr., was born September 3, 1863. A brother, Cullen A. Carr died June 29, 1863. His father died in the service of his country February 21, 1864. Mr. Carr’s grandfather, Mr. Williams, drove down in a one-horse covered wagon from Wheatland, Clinton County, Iowa, in 1864, taking Mr. Carr, his mother and brother to his home, thirty days being required to make the trip. A brother Thomas Carr, Jr. died July 10, 1864, leaving Mr. Carr and his mother. Mr. Carr attended school only a very short time, helping to support himself and mother as a boy. Bedford Times-Press Thursday May 12, 1955 p. 9 Hold Last Rites For Mrs. H. L. Carr Last rites for the late Mrs. Henry L. Carr were held at the Blockton Christian church Sunday, April 24, 1955, at 2:30 p. m. with Rev. E. E. Stringfellow of Des Moines and Rev. Huntington of Blockton officiating. Interment was in Rose Hill cemetery, Blockton. Sarah Priscilla Carr was born in Cadiz, Carroll County, Ohio, Oct. 3, 1861, and died at Van Nuys, Calif., April 19, 1955. She was one of six children born to Mr. and Mrs. J. [ames] W. [illiam] Allen. Surviving is one sister, Mrs. Kathryne Maine of Omaha. She was married to Henry Lewis Carr, Sept. 30, 1883 at Brush Creek, Iowa. To them were born three children, Vonnie, deceased; Cullen of Des Moines and Beulah Lester of Van Nuys, Calif. Three grandchildren, Kermit Carr, Des Moines; Vernon Carr, Sioux City; Coloma Lester Swysgood, Albuquerque, New Mexico and five great grandchildren, survive. Her husband, Henry Lewis Carr, died March 3, 1949 [1948]. They were permitted to live a full and happy life together for 64 years, all of which were spent in Blockton and vicinity. After the death of her husband, Mrs. Carr went to California to make her home with her daughter, Beulah Lester and her son-in-law, Erhern Lester. Mrs. Carr was an active member of the Christian church in earlier years where she taught Sunday school. She was a great lover of flowers and it was her privilege to grow and take many of them to her friends in Blockton while she made her home there. During her seven years in California she made many new friends who grew to love her. Mrs. Carr is also survived by three nephews and three nieces. [Jackson, Abena Arika Groenewald] Bedford Times-Press Thursday July 31, 1975 Last Rites Held In Hopkins for Mrs. Orren Jackson Funeral services for Mrs. Orren (Abena Arika) Jackson, 63, of Bedford, held July 14 at the Wray Memorial United Methodist Church in Hopkins, Missouri with the Rev. Richard Gressman officiating. Mrs. Jackson died July 11,1975 in Methodist Hospital in Des Moines where she had been a patient for 17 days. Interment was at the Hopkins Cemetery. Abena Arika Jackson was born July 21, 1911 at Grundy Center, Iowa, the daughter of Richard and Matilda Weise Groenewald. She attended the Methodist Church. She was married December 12, 1928 at Grundy Center to Orren [Douglas] Jackson, who survives. Fifteen children were born to this union. A housewife, Mrs. Jackson spent most of her married life on a farm in Taylor County, Iowa. Besides her husband of the home, she is survived by her mother of Grundy Center; nine sons, James Jackson of Coin, Iowa, Harry Jackson of Gower, Lawrence Jackson and Eldon Jackson of Blockton, Glen Jackson of Lenox, Bill Jackson of Conrad, Iowa, Douglas Jackson of Bedford, Richard Jackson of Davenport, Iowa, and LeRoy Jackson of the home; five daughters, Mrs. Ella Mae Cossins of Sheridan, Mo., Mrs. Lillie Schiller and Mrs. Mary Joslin of Dike, Iowa, Mrs. Betty Kiewiet of Conrad, Iowa, and Miss Daisy Jackson of the home; 39 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; three sisters and four brothers. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by one son, Donald Jackson, in 1957, one sister and two brothers. Mrs. Jackson enjoyed her role as a wife, mother and grandmother. She liked flowers and had fun collecting knickknacks. Bedford Times-Press Wednesday January 3, 1996 DEREK RICHARD JACKSON Derek came into this world on December 30, 1994. He was born in Clarinda to Dennis and Jina Jackson. Derek died on December 23, 1995 in Blockton. Derek is preceded in death by his grandmother Wilma Marie Jackson, great grandfather George Spencer, and great great grandfather Kenneth Wilson. Derek will be remembered by his parents Dennis and Jina Jackson of Blockton, his grandparents Jim and Jan Wilson, Lawrence and Shirley Jackson; his great grandparents Wilma Spencer, Sophie Wilson, Oren and Lois Jackson; and his great great grandmother Mildred Spencer. He will also be remembered by his aunts Jackie Wilson and Debrah, and his uncles James Wilson and Darrell Jackson, and many friends of the families. Derek was a gift of life. He had a sunny smile that lit up a room. If you were in a sour mood on entering the room Derek would change your whole disposition. Derek gave so much though only eighteen months old. He taught patience and understanding, he taught determination, to not take things for granted and to appreciate each and every day. He loved music, to snuggle and to be kissed. The very presence of a loved one would calm him and make him smile. In learning to not take things for granted each experience of a "first" was very important - the first cry, the first roll over, the first smile, and the first formations of words, left his family in awe of the gift of his life. He brought joy to the lives of those who knew him. Little "Dere Bear" will be sadly missed, but he will be remembered with loving memories of how he taught everyone he met how to live and how to love. The service was held on Tuesday, December 26 at The United Christian Presbyterian Church at 2:00 p.m. Pastors Scott Marcum and Nancy Ross presided. He was buried at the Blockton Cemetery. Johnson Alva Anderson Johnson, son of Ellis Matthew and Annie Liza (Steele) Johnson was born in Harrison County Missouri on January 22, 1909 and departed this life at Mount Ayr Health Care Center at Mt. Ayr, Iowa on December 20, 1997. He grew up in Missouri on the family farm and later moved to Iowa where he lived with his parents until their death. He remained on the family farm until he moved to Blockton in 1989 due to ill health. On November 15th, 1997 he moved to the Mt. Ayr Health Care Center. He enjoyed the farm, draft horses, livestock sales, reading, and visiting with friends and neighbors. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Clifford and Carl. He is survived by a sister Retha Riley of Maryville, Missouri; a sister in law, Clarice Scott of Sheridan, Missouri; and a host of nephews, nieces, relatives and friends. He will be missed by those who loved and cared for him. Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 23, 1997 at Novinger Taylor Funeral Home in Bedford with Rev. Scott Marcum officiating. [Johnson, Anna Liza “Annie” Steele] Bedford Times-Press Thursday July 15, 1976 Annie Johnson Final Rites Held Here July 11 Funeral services for Mrs. Ellis (Annie Liza) Johnson, 91, of Blockton were held July 11 at Shum - Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford with Rev. Milton Henderson officiating. Mrs. Johnson died July 8,1976, in Ringgold County Hospital in Mount Ayr, where she had been a patient for four weeks. Interment was at Rose Hill Cemetery, Blockton. Annie Liza Johnson, daughter of Solomon and Susan Hunter Steele, was born July 1, 1885, in Missouri. She was united in marriage in 1907 to Ellis Johnson who preceded her in death January 24, 1964. She is survived by three sons, Alva [Anderson] Johnson and Carl [Russell] Johnson of Blockton; Clifford [Earl] of Sheridan, Mo.; one daughter, Mrs. Retha Riley, Parnell, Mo.; 15 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; one sister, Cora Ruckman, of Des Moines, Ia. She was a kind and considerate mother and friend and will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Bedford Times-Press Wednesday October 16, 1996 Carl Russell Johnson Carl Russell Johnson, son of Ellis Matthew and, Annie Liza (Steele) Johnson was born in Harrison County Missouri on May 4, 1910 and departed this life on October 8, 1996 at Mercy Medical Center, Des Moines, Iowa. He attended school in the rural community of Parnell and Oxford, Missouri areas. On May 4, 1935 he was united in marriage to Helen Thelma Wake, in Sheridan, Missouri. Four children were born to this union to bless their home and share their love, Marvel Marie, Sharon Kay, Linda Mae and Richard Carl. In their early married life they lived in the Sheridan, MO and Sharpsburg, IA area and moved to the Blockton area in 1944 where they farmed until 1968 when they moved to town; Carl then worked on road construction and for the city of Blockton before retiring. After retiring he worked for area farmers. Carl loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter, trapper and fisherman all his life. He was a strong supporter and member of the NRA. He was still active and enjoying life helping his daughter and son-in-law on the farm and attending the local country music shows. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 50 years, Helen, his parents, one brother, Clifford Johnson, two sons-in-law, James Dean Lawrence and Doyle Edward Lawrence. Left to cherish his memory are daughters, Marvel Melvin, Sharon Groff and husband Ivan, Linda Everhart and husband Joe, son Richard and wife Alice, all of Blockton. Six grandchildren, Brian Lawrence and wife Vonn of Blockton, Jodi Lawrence of Blockton, Valerie Hensley and husband Junior of Lenox, Carla Cummings and husband Bradley of Moffat, Colorado, Lucinda Armstrong and husband Kevin of Corning, and Clinton Johnson of Blockton. Seven great grandchildren, Jimmy Lee, Lacee, and Joel Lawrence, Eric and Lauren Hensley, Callin and Autumn Cummings. One brother, Alva Johnson of Blockton, one sister, Retha Riley of Maryville, a niece Wanda Anderson of Des Moines, who held a special place in his heart, and his special friend, Leola Anderson, along with a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. He was a wonderful, fun-loving dad that always showed us love, taught us honesty, shared our concerns, had time to listen, lended a helping hand, loved to visit friends, play music and enjoy the closeness of family. Johnson, 85, Dies At Platteville Mrs. William Johnson, 85, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. [illiam] W. Matheny at Platteville, Sunday, Nov. 3. The funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Blockton Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. W. H. Warrior. Burial was in the Rose Hill cemetery. Elizabeth E. [llen] Erwin was born near Leesville, Ind., June 28, 1850. She came to Iowa in 1864. On July 30, 1868 she was married to John Bennett. He died two years later and she was married in 1873 to William Johnson. They resided in Ringgold County a short time and then moved to Taylor County, which place had since been their home. Mr. Johnson died in 1919. They were the parents of eleven children, two having preceded their parents in death, Ira L. died in infancy and Lola A. Martin in 1912. The surviving children are Mrs. Ina Matheny of Blockton, H. [enry] A. Johnson of Buffalo, Wyo., Mrs. Ora Murray of Barnard, Kans., W. [illiam] C. [llen] Erwin was born near Leesville, Indiana, June 28, 1850 and died Nov. 3, 1935, aged 85 years, 4 months and 6 days. She came to Iowa in the year 1864. Was united in marriage to John Bennett, July 30, 1868, and was left a widow two years later. In 1873 she was united in marriage with William Johnson. They first resided in Ringgold County, removing after a short time to Taylor County, where they spent the remainder of their lives. To this union eleven children were born. Preceding her in death were a son, Ira L., who died at the age of one year; a daughter, Lala [Lola] A. Martin, who died in 1912; and her husband who died in 1919. She was a life long member of the Methodist church, but was unable to take an active part during her later years because of deafness. [JOHNSON, ELIZABETH ELLEN ERWIN BENNETT] Bedford Times-Press Thursday January 30, 1964 p. 4 Ellis Johnson Rites Jan. 27 Funeral services for Ellis Matthew Johnson held January 27 at Madison Street Shum-Novinger Funeral Home, were conducted by Rev. J. Milton Kinney. Mr. Johnson died Jan. 24, 1964 at the age of 86 years, two months and 16 days. Interment was at Rose Hill Cemetery, Blockton, Iowa. Included in the services was the following obituary: Ellis Ma[t]thew Johnson was born November 8, 1877. In the year of 1907 he was united in marriage to Anna L. [iza] Steele. To this union four children were born: Alva, Carl, Clifford and Retha. He spent his life farming in Missouri until the last 16 years when he lived in Iowa. He is survived by his wife and son Alva at home; Carl of Blockton; Clifford of Sheridan, Mo.; Mrs. Merle Riley of Parnell, MO.; 15 grandchildren and a host of friends. He was a loving husband and father and will be sadly missed. Bedford Times-Press Thursday January 23, 1986 p. 6 Services Held for Helen Thelma Johnson Last rites for Helen Thelma Johnson, 70, were held January 17 at Blockton United Methodist Church officiated by Rev. Mike Elg and Rev. Bill Ferrens. Interment was at Rose Hill Cemetery, Blockton, Ia. Mrs. Johnson died January 14, 1986 at Ringgold County Hospital, Mt. Ayr. Helen Thelma Johnson, daughter of Fredrick William and Selena Belle Whitaker Wake, was born in Isadora, Mo. July 1, 1915. After attending grade school in the rural community of the Sheridan area, she then attended Sheridan High School, Sheridan, Mo. As a child, she accepted Christ as her personal Savior and was baptized in the Brethren church and later united with the Blockton Southern Baptist Church. On May 4, 1935, she was united in marriage to Carl Russell Johnson at Sheridan, Missouri. Four children were born to this union to bless their home and share their love, Marvel Marie, Sharon Kay, Linda Mae, and Richard Carl. She was preceded in death by her father Fredrick (Dick) Wake, mother Lena, and two sons-in-law, James Dean Lawrence and Doyle Edward Lawrence. Left to cherish her memories are husband Carl, daughters Marvel Lawrence, Sharon Groff and husband Ivan, Linda Everhart and husband Joe, and son Richard and wife Alice. Six grandchildren, Brian Lawrence and wife Vonn, Jodi Lawrence, Valerie and Carla Everhart, and Lucinda and Clinton Johnson, all of Blockton; brother Don Wake, Pickering, Mo., and sister Ethel Byrn of Des Moines, and a special niece Wanda Anderson of Des Moines, Iowa who held a special place in her heart, along with a host of other nieces and nephews, relatives and friends. Throughout the time of her lingering illness, her faith in God and the love of her family sustained her beyond expectation of all the doctors. She was a devoted, loving, caring, and faithful wife and mother, always thinking of others happiness and well being first. We loved her very much and will always cherish memories of her life with us. Blockton News Thursday November 27, 1919 [p. 1] William Johnson Dead William Johnson, who has been confined to the house for several months and who was taken suddenly worse over two weeks ago, passed away at his home near the park Tuesday evening about 10 o’clock. As we go to press full arrangements have not been made for the funeral services, as they are waiting to hear from some of the children in distant states. [Johnson, William] Blockton News Thursday December 4, 1919 [p. 1] Obituary William Johnson was born near Waynesburg, Greene County, Pennsylvania, April 5, 1835, and passed away November 25, 1919, aged 84 years, 7 months and 20 days. Mr. Johnson was the youngest son of Levi and Sarah [Mason] Johnson. He came to Iowa in the fall of 1872. He was united in marriage to Elizabeth E. [llen Erwin] Bennett on January 1, 1873. To this union was born eleven children, [two of whom preceded him in death.] Nine children survive---Henry A., of Buffalo, Wyoming; William C., of Bedford, Jesse G., of Sheridan, Mo.; Charles F. and Milo V., of Blockton; Mrs. Ora Morris, of Barnard, Kansas; Mrs. Wm. Matheny, of Blockton; Mrs. Lon Nash, of Divide, Wyoming, and Mrs. James Dungy, of Sheridan, Mo. Mr. Johnson also leaves nineteen grandchildren and a large circle of friends. He was a good citizen, a kind husband and faithful father. He had high regard for the better things of life. The writer said to him: “I want that you trust in God and accept Jesus Christ as your Savior.” He said: “There is nothing else I can do.” A citizen, husband and father is gone. The times and places that knew him shall know him no more. He is Not for death’s Mysteries intervene until the resurrection morn. Funeral services were held at the late residence Saturday afternoon at Saturday afternoon at 2:30, conducted by Rev. J. W. Harwood, pastor of the Blockton M. E. church, and interment was made in Rose Hill cemetery. Adams County Free Press (Corning, Iowa) Thursday December 30, 1937 p. 8 Obituary Emma Alice, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gideon McFall, was born near Fremont, Iowa, in the first frame house erected in Mahaska County, on August 17, 1855; and departed this life at the home of her son in Prescott, Iowa, December 23, 1937 at the age of 82 years, 4 months and 4 days. On November 26, 1876 she was united in marriage at Fremont to Marshall Everett Keith. To this union six children were born. In the year of 1893 Mr. and Mrs. Keith and family came to Taylor County where they made their home, until his death May 4, 1926. Eleven weeks ago she fell and broke her hip, since that time she has been confined to her bed in the home of her son V. [alma] G. [id] Keith in Prescott. Early in life she was converted and united with the Methodist church. At the time of her death she was a member of the Methodist Church in Gravity. Her faith in God was steadfast until the last, her passing from this life is but her going home. Those left to mourn her departure from this life are her six children: Lela Clark of Sharpsburg, Ia.; Maggie DeLean of Lewis, Ia.; Hattie Cunningham of Botha Alta., Canada; Fred M. Keith of Gravity, Ia.; Mary King of Omaha, Nebraska; and V. [alma] G. [id] Keith of Prescott, Ia.; eighteen grandchildren, five great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Clara Votaw of Ontario, California; one brother Gideon of Gary, Indiana; and many other relatives and friends. The funeral services were conducted in the Methodist Church in Prescott Friday afternoon by Rev. R. V. Felt. The body was laid to rest in the cemetery at Gravity by the side of her husband. North Taylor Review (Sharpsburg, Iowa) Thursday October 18, 1917 p. 3 GRAVITY John [Boag] Lock, who has been very ill at his home here for some weeks past, died Monday evening. No funeral arrangements have yet been made. His son, Ira Lock of Greeley, Colo., came in early Monday evening, a few hours before his death. Bedford Times Republican Thursday January 19, 1922 p. 3 Obituary His marriage to Dinah [Dianna] King of Canton, Ill., took place in 1866. To this union four children were born: Mrs. May Groover of Canton, Ill.; Mrs. Nellie Zwisler of Omaha, Nebr.; Mrs. Myrtle Smith of Chicago, Ill, and a son George. His marriage to Nora Pegram of Red Oak, Ia., occurred in 1888. To them was born a son, Earl. The deceased was the second of a family of five children. Two sisters and a brother survive: Mrs. Henry Burge of Conway, Ia.; Mrs. A. E. Baughman and a brother William, both residents of Knowlton, Iowa. There are of the descendants, besides those mention, six living grand children and three great grandchildren. Since September, 1916, he had been an inmate of the Soldiers Home at Quincy, Ill., where he passed away quietly and peacefully while eating his breakfast Monday morning, January 9th, 1922. The funeral services were conducted at Conway, Iowa, from the Community Methodist church by the pastor, Carl Brown, January 11, and interment made in the cemetery at Gravity, Iowa. [H.] Roberts, formerly of Gravity, was brought to Bedford from St. Joseph, Tuesday noon and taken to Gravity where the funeral services were held. Mr. Roberts was well known over the county, having been a resident for years. He is the father of George Roberts. His death occurred at the home of his daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Shaw, at St. Joe, where he has been making his home recently. His death was caused by debility resulting from old age, he being seventy-two years of age. Mr. Roberts served in the Civil War and his body was met here by the members of the G. A. R. of Gravity. [Roberts, William H.] Bedford Free Press Thursday August 16, 1923 [p. 1] Two Funerals at Gravity Tuesday The body of William Roberts was brought in on the noon train Tuesday from St. Joseph where he had died Sunday at the home of his son-in-law, Elmer Shaw. He was an old soldier and many of his comrades of Gravity and vicinity were in the large delegation that met the train here Tuesday. He died in St. Joe after a prolonged illness from paralysis at the home of his daughter where he had been living for several months but Gravity had been his home for years. The body was taken there for burial that afternoon. Bedford Free Press Thursday January 2, 1908 p. 2 Mrs. Emma [Emily] Bell Sturms [Sturm] died Saturday December 14, 1907, at the family home southeast of Corning, in Taylor County, after an illness of only a week, of pneumonia. Miss Emma [Emily] Belle Lewis was born in Montgomery County, [Iowa] April 2, 1888, and was united in marriage to Erwin [Irvin] Sturms [Sturm] May 1, 1904. Mrs. Sturms [Sturm] was 19 years, 8 months and 12 days old at the time of her death. The funeral services were held at the Oak Hill Christian Church, Monday, December 16th, conducted by Rev. J.
