Last Rites Held For Nina Stone November 10

Funeral services for Nina Belle Stone, 105, a resident of Taylor County for 67 years, were held Tuesday, November 10, at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford.  Mrs. Stone died Sunday, November 8, 1981, at Bedford Manor Nursing Home.  Rev. Marcia Smith and Rev. Carl Cummings officiated.  Interment was in Fairview Cemetery, Bedford.

Nina Belle Johnson Stone was born October 23, 1876, at Monmouth, Warren County, Illinois.  She was the oldest of six children of David and Mary Ellen Johnson.  She spent the early years of her youth in the rural area of Warren County, received her education in the rural school and at an early age began working as a domestic, helping many families, old and young alike.

She was married to Woodford Marion Stone on February 6, 1896, at Monmouth, Ill.  They were granted 61 years together and farmed their entire married life in Illinois, Parnell, Mo., and rural Bedford, Ia.

To this union were born five children, Earl, Ivan, Virgil, Marie and Francis Marion.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marion; sons Dr. Ivan Stone and Francis Marion Stone; her parents; one sister, Jessie Baggs; brothers Orlie, Roy and Ray Johnson; son-in-law Thomas Park; her daughter-in-law, Ella Stone; and grandchildren Donna Lee and Marvin Park.

Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Dr. Earl Stone and wife, Irene, of Bedford, and Virgil of Opportunity, Washington; daughter Marie Park of Bedford; daughter-in-law, Corrine Squires of Shenandoah; grandchildren, Norma Hensley, Mary Ellen Norton, Harold Park, Ruth McBrine and Mary Lou Burns; great grandchildren, Jeffrey and Jack Hensley, Jennifer Yoder, Julie Lindstrom, Dennis and Denise Norton, Kellie Park, Dedee Hunt, Natalie Burns, Terry Glidden, Craig and Jerry Lock; great-great grandchildren, Julie Yoder, Meagan and Derek Norton; a sister, Alta Bristow, Cedar Rapids; grandchildren-in-law, nieces and nephews.

She was a long-time member of the Bedford United Christian Presbyterian Church, a most kind and loving person with a smile and cheery greeting for everyone.

Services To Be Nov. 14 For Vera Louise Barnes

Services for Vera Louise [Tackett] Barnes, 64, of Clarinda, will be held Sat., Nov. 14, 2:00 p.m., at the Walker-Merrick Funeral Home in Clarinda.  Burial will be at the Clarinda Cemetery.  Visitation will be Fri., Nov. 13, 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Obituary - Mrs. Elizabeth Haun

Mrs. Elizabeth Haun, daughter of the late Anthony and Christiana [Dinghard] Schneider, was born in Illinois, January 1, 1865, and died December 16, 1947, at the age of 82 years, 11 months, 16 days.

She was married to John H. Haun, April 13, 1884.  To them were born five children: William Haun of Hopkins, Mrs. Walter Myers [Eva] of St. Joseph, Alva Oren Haun of Bedford, Edward Orley Haun of Sheridan, and Rosa Mae who passed away in infancy.

She is survived by the four children, two daughters-in-law, one sister, Mrs. Emma Stoner of Sheridan; one brother, Charley Schneider of Malvern, Iowa.

She was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church and resided for 56 years on the same farm east of Hopkins.  For several years she had been a widow and cared for her invalid son, Edward, on the farm.

The funeral services were conducted at the Forest Grove church by Rev. J. Vernon Wheeler of Hopkins, Thursday morning, December 18.  Burial was in the Forest Grove cemetery.

Obituary - L. A. Thomas

Lionel Alga Thomas, son of John and Daisy Thomas, was born April 27, 1891, in Schuyler, Nebraska, and died December 14, 1947, at Richmond, California, at the age of 56 years, 7 months and 16 days.

He was a veteran of World War I.  He spent most of his life in Page and Taylor counties, except the last year and a half, which was spent in California.

On July 3, 1923, he was married to Ruth McNutt.  To them were born two children, Kenneth, who died in infancy, and Vivian at home.  In addition to his wife and daughter, he is survived by a brother, Adolph A. Thomas; a sister, Alsia Larson of Bedford; and a sister, Ilta Stoops of Omaha.  He was preceded in death by his father and mother and one sister, Alva Mae.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Eugene B. Nyman at the Shum Funeral Home at 2 o'clock, Sunday, Dec. 21.  Burial was in the Fairview cemetery.

Ora William Jared

Ora William Jared, son of Bruce and Josephine [Scrivner] Jared, was born in Taylor County, Iowa, October 9, 1889, and departed this life Dec. 5, 1925, his death at St. Francis hospital, Maryville, Mo., resulting from injuries sustained in a railroad accident near Arkoe, Missouri.

Mr. Jared was married Feb. 24, 1912, to Myrtle Guillimont, and to them seven children were born, two of whom did not outlive their infant years, and of the surviving children, there are four daughters, Alice, Pauline, Helen and Lucile, and one son, Orville.

Other living members of the immediate family are his parents, two sisters, Mrs. Will Robinson [Viola] and Mrs. Ted Hartman [Mabel], two brothers, Frank and John Jared, all residing in Bedford, the home of his parents.  A third sister, Mrs. Elva Wolverton, died some thirteen years ago.

Ora Jared was well liked by those who knew him and leaves a host of friends and relatives to mourn his untimely death.  He had been in the employ of the C. B. & Q. Railroad for the past four years, and was a member of the M. D. A. of the Burlington at Creston, Ia.  Funeral services were held at 2:00 o'clock, Sunday, Dec. 6, at the home of his parents, being conducted by Rev. Paul G. Luce of the First Presbyterian Church, assisted by Misses Beryl Rhoads and Elaine Meikle, Messrs. Wilkins and Harley, with Mrs. K. B. Paschal at the organ.

Six of the companions and fellow employees of the deceased acted as pallbearers, interment being given in the new cemetery [Fairview], Bedford, Iowa.

Kittie Anderson Harkless

Kittie Maria Anderson was born in Fairview Township, Fulton County, Illinois, April 12, 1856, and departed this life Dec. 5th, 1925, aged 69 years, 7 months and 23 days.  She was the daughter of Mahlon and Mary Bever Anderson, next to the youngest of nine children.  She was united in marriage on July 4th, 1874, to John D. [uncan] Harkless of Ellinville, Ill.  To this union were born six children, W. [illiam] A. [bner] of London Mills, Ill., Mrs. C. [larence] L. [ester] Keith [Mary] of New Market, Ia., Lewis B. and H. [enry] J. [ay], at home.  Two died in infancy.  The grandchildren are Ralph L. Harkless of Fairview, Ill., Mrs. Josephine Houck of London Mills, Ill., Miss Mildred Harkless at home, Margaret and Leota Keith of New Market, all being present at the last rites.  There are five great grandchildren living in Illinois.  Two sisters, Louisa Cook, of Quenemo, Kas., and Miss Rebecca Anderson, who has lived with her many years.  These, with the husband, many other relatives and hosts of friends, mourn the loss of a kind, true, and loving wife, mother and friend.  Hers was a life of service, loving kindness and gracious sacrifice, always ministering to the needs of others with no thought of self.  Her work here is finished.  She will be greatly missed by all who knew her, for there is none who can fill her place.
