Mrs. Pollie Keith
Final Rites Held Here
Funeral services for Mrs. Pollie Adel Keith, who was Bedford's oldest resident, held June 22 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home, were conducted by Rev. Ivo Randels.  Interment was in Bedford cemetery, Bedford.

Included in the services was the following obituary:

Mrs. Pollie A. Keith, daughter of Byrum and Sarah Ann [Billiter] Helm, was born in Taylor County, Iowa, September 5, 1866 and died at the home of her daughter [Della] and son-in-law, Leonard L. Moore, in Bedford, June 20, 1963, aged 96 years, 9 months, and 15 days.  Her entire life was spent in the vicinity of Bedford.

On March 25. 1886, she was united in marriage to Joseph H. Keith.  To this union four daughters were born:  Mrs. Della Moore and Mrs. Helen Timberlake of Bedford; Mrs. Loa Kinnison and Mrs. Zetta Thompson preceded her in death.  She also leaves seven grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.  Her husband preceded her in death Feb. 15, 1930.

At an early age Mrs. Keith united with the Church of Christ at Berea, but after moving to Bedford became active in the Christian church until the last few years when ill health prevented her attendance.

Mrs. Keith was another of our pioneer homemakers who bore the burdens of homemaking gallantly in an era when there were few if any labor saving devices in the home.  Her life's thought and energies were spent serving her loved ones in the home and giving time and talent to her church.  She was uncomplaining though living in a darkened world for the last 10 years.  Her thoughts were more for the welfare of others than her own.

Attending the funeral services on June 22 for Mrs. Pollie Keith were Mr. and Mrs. Harold Ritchie, Miss Fern Ritchie of Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Loren Helm, Joan and John, of Red Oak; Mr. and Mrs. Francis Farlow, Beverly, William, Virginia and Virgil of Emmetsburg.

Former Resident Dies In Calif.
Graveside services for Mrs. Ella Wood Sanford were held at the Bedford cemetery Sunday (July 14), with Rev. J. Milton Kinney, local Methodist minister, officiating.  Mrs. Sanford's ashes were interred in the family lot next to her husband.

Ella Wood was the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William [James] Wood [Asenath Wray].  The family moved to Bedford from northern Missouri when she was a girl.

Ella received her basic education in Bedford and in the course of time became primary teacher here, a position she held for a fairly long period.  Her niece writes, "She was a pretty young girl with twinkling brown eyes, an infectious giggle, and a sense of fun.  I'm sure her pupils loved her as she did them."

She married E. [mmett] Reid Sanford of Sabetha, Kans. And moved to Milwaukee, Wisc., where later their son, Harold Dean, was born.  Shortly thereafter the family moved to Missoula, Mont. where Mr. Sanford headed the commercial department of the city high school.  The next step was a transfer to the University of Montana where he headed the school of business.  Meantime, Mrs. Sanford headed the primary department of First Methodist church and her husband served as treasurer.  They gave generously of time and energy to Methodist projects of all sorts.

When time for professional retirement came, the Sanfords moved to Pacific Palisades, Calif., where her sister, Daisy Wood Van Sant, had already established a home.  After Mr. Sanford's death in 1951, the two sisters lived together and later became residents in the Methodist sponsored manor at Claremont, Calif.

Mrs. Sanford had a genius for friendship and a faith which illuminated her own path.  She kept her alert interest in life and her gaiety to the end---she would have been 89 years old had she lived to July 17.

She is survived by her son whose home is in San Francisco and a niece, Mrs. George Brown, of Rock Port, Mo.
