Adair County Free Press Thursday October 27, 1932 p. 9 Death of Mrs. Martin Hannah Lambert was born at Soham, [Cambridgeshire] England, March 22, 1816. Much of her early life was spent in London. She was united in marriage with Robert Martin in 1862. To this union were born four children: Julia, Ellen, Robert in England and William Lambert in America. Mr. Martin came to America in 1880 and Mrs. Martin and the three children joined him fifteen months later and lived on a farm near Detroit. The children immediately found employment and Mr. Martin left for his work at daylight and was gone until nightfall. After making the home neat and spotless, with the nearest neighbor over a mile away, Mrs. Martin found much time to contrast life in London with the loneliness of country life in America. Of a naturally cheerful disposition, she made the best of it. Later, they moved to Adair County, settling on a farm in Washington township in 1890, which was her home until the time of her death, which occurred at Nevin [ville] where she was visiting at the home of her son, Robert, October 10, 1932, at the age of 86 years, 6 months and 16 days. Mrs. Martin had the talent of making a wonderful home in city or wilderness, was an exquisite housekeeper, devoted wife and mother and good neighbor and loyal friend. Until the last few years of her life she devoted herself to the needs of every sick neighbor far or near. Before telephones were known and the nearest doctor at Mt. Etna, many a neighbor had a reason to bless Mrs. Martin's skill in nursing. Her motto was "A little help is worth a lot of sympathy." She was a practical Christian, helping the church financially whenever possible and attending services as long as her health permitted. She was preceded in death by her husband on December 18, 1913, and later by her daughter, Mrs. Ellen Walker in Colorado, by four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She leaves to mourn her departure three children: Mrs. Julia Johnson of Orient; Robert Martin, Nevinville; and William L. [ambert], of Washington township, nineteen grandchildren, two step grand children; twenty-nine great grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and other relatives and many friends. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Bressler of Nevinville, assisted by Rev. Stuart of Bridgewater, were held at the Avondale church at two o'clock Wednesday afternoon. Hymns were sung by the Avondale quartet. The pallbearers were W. H. Davis, Lon Davis, S. W. Carns, Johnnie Gordon, Henry Martin and Frank Woodside. Interment was made in the Avondale cemetery [Adair County]. |
