George Reece Taken In Death

Funeral services for George Reece, 92, were held Tuesday at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home with Mr. V. M. Gilbert officiating.  Mr. Reece died December 29 at Thogmartin Care and Keep Home in Bedford.  Interment was in the Mausoleum at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford.

Services Held Here For George Reece

Funeral services for George Reece, longtime resident, were held at Madison Street Shum-Novinger Funeral Home, December 31, with Mr. V. M. Gilbert officiating.  Mr. Reece died December 29 at the age of 92 years, 4 months, and 23 days.  Interment was in the Mausoleum at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford.

Included in the services was the following obituary:

George Reece, son of Richard M. Reece and Margaret Swaim, was born August 6, 1871, in Taylor County Iowa.

He was united in marriage to Eva May Spencer February 20, 1895.  To this union three daughters and one son were born: Mrs. Glade (Gail) Keith, Mrs. Howard (Ava) Hess, both of Bedford, Mrs. Eddie (Ruth) Wenger of Dillon, Montana and John Spencer Reece of Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

George was engaged in farming the early part of his life.  He bought and sold several farms in Taylor County in which he took great pride.

May 22, 1922, his wife died after moving to Bedford where he was engaged in business with Win Wright selling Phelps Light plants.

After the death of his wife, he and the children moved to Dillon, Montana, and lived one year.  He moved back to Bedford.  During this time he built a home on Central Street and was manager of the Farmers Elevator. 

In 1929 he moved to Montana and was engaged in ranching for about 12 years, living with his daughter, Mrs. Eddie Wenger.  In 1941, he came to live in Bedford, making several trips back to Montana during the summer.

He was baptized in 1915 and was a faithful member of the Berea Church of Christ.

He loved to talk politics and religion with his fellowmen.  He loved his family and was a devoted husband and father.

He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Agnes Montgomery of Xenia, Illinois, his four children, eight grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and other relatives and a host of friends, who will miss him.

Among those from out-of-town who attended the services for George Reece were his grandson, George E. Reece, son of John Reece of Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Straight of Lawrence, Kans.

C. A. Burwell, 88, Rites Dec. 24

Funeral services for Clarence Alden Burwell, long-time Gravity resident, were held December 24 at the Gravity Methodist Church.  Mr. Burwell died at his home December 22, at the age of 88 years.  Interment was at Washington cemetery, Gravity, Iowa.

Included in the services was the following obituary:

Clarence Alden Burwell, son of Joseph and Sarah [Eby] Burwell, was born April 26, 1875, in Page County, Iowa.  He was one of nine children.

He was married to Mirtie [Myrtle] Douthit, March 8, 1898, and to this union four children were born.  The couple lived in Page County four years, then moved to a farm in Taylor County.  The last 23 years they have made their home in Gravity.

Mr. Burwell was preceded in death by his father and mother, four brothers: A. [lonzo] W., Elmer M., [Wesley] Luellen and J. [ohn] Orlando, and three sisters: Carrie Brokaw, Emma Walker and Ida Heninger.

He is survived by two sons, Paul Burwell of Rice Lake, Wisc., and Robert Burwell of Gravity, two daughters, Mrs. Clyde Johnson [Edith] of Congress, Ariz., and Mrs. Russell Stearns of Gravity, seven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, a sister, Iona Heninger, of Gravity, and a host of friends.

Before his retirement he engaged in farming.  He had served on the election board, and was a member of the Taylor County Welfare Board until his health failed.

As a young man he became a member of the United Presbyterian Church of Clarinda.  Later, he transferred his membership to the Gravity Methodist Church.

He will long be remembered as an ardent churchman, faithful citizen, kind and generous personality and wonderful father.

Bruce Wolverton Dies In Calif.

Rites for Bruce Wolverton of Arcadia, Calif., formerly of Bedford, were held December 30 at Rose Hill Memorial Park in Arcadia.  Mr. Wolverton died December 26 at the age of 56 years, after residing in California for 27 years.

He is survived by his wife, Betty, of Arcadia; a daughter, Earlyne E. Morrison of Duarte, Calif.; mother, Zella Wolverton of Denver, Colo., and a sister, Blanche Trumbo, of Bedford.

Mrs. Frantz, 86, Services Today

Mrs. Claude (Ruth) [Widner] Frantz, 86, of St. Joseph, Mo., died at Missouri Methodist Hospital there Mon., Jan. 6, following major surgery two weeks ago.  Funeral services will be held in St. Joseph today (Jan. 9) and the body will be brought to Fairview cemetery in Bedford for burial.

A native of Taylor County, she had moved to St. Joseph 45 years ago from Conway.  Mr. Frantz died in 1956.

Survivors include three sons, Clifford Frantz of St. Joseph, Paul Frantz of Silver Spring, Maryland, and Philip Frantz of Fargo, N. Dak., and three grandchildren.

The immediate relatives at Bedford are a niece, Mrs. Thos. Hosman, and three nephews, Marion Mohler, Elvin Griffith and Fern Griffith.
