Bedford Times-Press Thursday May 28, 1936 [p. 1] E. E. Leighton, 74, Succumbs Saturday E. E. Leighton, 74, a former resident of this community, died at his home in New Franklin, Mo., Saturday, May 23. The body was brought to Bedford and the funeral services were held at the Wetmore Funeral Home Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Robert Boshen. Burial was in the Dallas Center cemetery, near New Market. Elmer Ellsworth Leighton, oldest son of David and Mary Ellen Leighton, was born in Page County, Nov. 27, 1861. When a small child he moved with his parents to Illinois and at the close of the Civil War they moved to Taylor County, Iowa, where he resided until eleven years ago, when he moved to Missouri. He was married to Loretta Frances Weaver on Sept. 6, 1883. Twelve children were born to them, five dying in infancy. The remaining children are Roy Leighton, Glenn Leighton, and Mrs. J. F. (Blanche) Ridnour of Bedford; Don Leighton of Nodaway, Iowa; Mrs. Opal Squires of Moorhead, Iowa; Mrs. Coryl Leighton of Otis, Colo; and Mrs. (Beulah) Ray Price of Fruita, Colo. Mrs. Leighton died in 1917. Surviving with the seven children are twenty-four grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. When a young man Mr. Leighton united with the Presbyterian church, in later years transferring his membership to the Methodist church. Bedford Times-Press Thursday May 28, 1936 [p. 1] Russell Gant, 31, Dies In Hospital Russell H. [obart] Gant died at 4:30 Sunday morning in the Missouri Methodist hospital in St. Joseph, at the age of 31 years, one month and eighteen days. He was taken ill on Monday and rushed to the hospital Tuesday, where he submitted to an operation for acute appendicitis, being seriously ill from the first. He was given a blood transfusion and every effort was made to save his life. He leaves his wife, Audrey Smith Gant, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gant, four sisters, Mrs. Mable Carmichael and Mrs. Mary Allison of New Market, Mrs. Alma Bix, in Buchanan Township and Mrs. Ethel Gray of Siam, and one brother, Orville Gant, at home. He was a devoted member of the Christian church and had served as a member of the church board and as Sunday school superintendent for a number of years. He will be greatly missed. May 26 Funeral services for Russell Gant, 31; who died at the Methodist hospital in St. Joseph. Mo., Sunday, May 24, were held at the Christian church in Siam Tuesday afternoon, May 29, conducted by Rev. Roy Gibson of the Church of God in Kansas City, Kans. Burial was in the Siam cemetery. Russel Hobart Gant, son of Charles and Florence Goodrich Gant, was born April 7, 1905. He spent his entire life in Taylor County, receiving his early education in the rural school of Mason township and graduating from the Bedford high school in the class of '25. He united with the Church of Christ at Siam in September 1921 at the age of 16 years and had always been active in church work. For the past three years he had served as the superintendent of the Sunday school and was also a member of the church board. He was ever ready to do anything for the good of the church or the community in which he resided.. April 3, 1929 he was married to Miss Audra Fern Smith at Clarinda. To them was born one son, Hobart Dean. Surviving with the wife and son are his parents; one brother Orval Gant, at home; four sisters, Mrs. Mabel Carmichael, Mrs. Mary Allison, Mrs. Alma Bix, and Mrs. Ethel Gray, all of the New Market and Siam community. [newspaper unknown] Gant, Russell Hobart , was born April 7, 1905 and passed to the Great Beyond at the Missouri Methodist hospital at St Joseph, Mo., May 24, 1936, at the age of 31 years, 1 month and 17 days. He united with the Church of Christ at Siam, Iowa, at the age of 16, in September 1921, during evangelistic meetings conducted by the Rev Johnson. He has been very active in church work, being superintendent of the Sunday school for the past three years. Russell spent his entire life in Taylor county, receiving his early education in Mason township. He afterward attended Bedford high school, graduating in the spring of 1925. On April 3, 1929, at Clarinda, Iowa, he was united in marriage to Audra Fern Smith. To this union was born one son, Hobart Dean. He followed the occupation of farming all his life. Devoted to his family, he was a loving husband and a kind and affectionate father. He will be greatly missed, both at home and by his friends and neighbors. He is survived by his loving wife and son, Hobart Dean, his father and mother, Mr and Mrs Charles Gant, one brother, Orval Gant, four sisters, Mrs Mabel Carmichael, Mrs Mary Allison, Mrs Alma Bix, all of New Market, Iowa, Mrs Ethel Gray of Siam, Iowa, also four brothers-in-law, four nieces and three nephews. The funeral was conducted by the Rev Roy Gibson, pastor of the Church of God at Kansas City. Bedford Times-Press Thursday December 26, 1935 [p. 1] Mrs. David Greeley Dies In Hospital Mrs. David Greeley, 33, of Burlington Junction, Mo., died at the St. Francis hospital in Maryville early Tuesday morning. The funeral services were held in Burlington Junction at 10 o'clock this morning and again at 1 o'clock this afternoon at a country church in that northern part of the county where burial was made. [Grace] Lavada [Louvada] Brown was born at Prescott, Iowa, Oct. 17, 1897, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harper Brown [Maude McPherren]. She was five years old when the family moved to Corning. On Feb. 12, 1919, she was married to David Greeley and later the couple moved from Corning to Braddyville where they resided for one year. Then they moved to a farm seven miles southwest of Burlington Junction where they had since lived. Surviving are the husband, five children, Geraldine, Robert, Richard, James and infant daughter, Grace; her father, Harper Brown, and six sisters and a brother. Montgomery Mrs. Addie Belle McCormick Montgomery, 88, widow of Robert J. [ohn] Montgomery, died Sunday, May 1, at her country home four miles northeast of Pickering. She was born at Kirkwood, Ill. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. Elisha McCormick [Susan Jane Cummings]. Private funeral services were held Tuesday, May 3, at the Price funeral home in Maryville. Burial was in a Bedford cemetery [Fairview Cemetery]. Survivors are four daughters, Mrs. [Elizabeth] Lizzie Killman of Pickering, Mrs. Fannie Sparks of McMinnville, Ore., Mrs. Gladys Gonser of Seattle, Wash., Mrs. Garland Holt of Maryville; two sons, Elmer Montgomery and [Donald] Beryl Montgomery of the home; 12 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren; two brothers, Ed McCormick and Fred McCormick of Bedford. Her husband preceded her in death in 1936. Bedford Times-Press Thursday October 4, 1956 [p. 1] Levi Kernen Dies Unexpectedly Levi Kernen, farmer residing north of Bedford, died at Hand hospital, Shenandoah, Tuesday, October 2. Mr. Kernen had gone to the hospital to visit his wife, who had been taken there by ambulance Monday, and while there decided to have a check-up of his own health, death coming unexpectedly late Tuesday afternoon. No funeral arrangements are made as we go to press. The body is at the Wetmore Funeral Home. [Levi Kernen] Bedford Times-Press Thursday October 18, 1956 p. 4 Obituary - Levi Kernen Levi Kernen, son of Fred and Rosa Wolfe Kernen, was born August 17, 1883, in a log cabin three miles northeast of Nodaway in Adams County, Iowa, and died October 2, 1956, at Shenandoah, Iowa, at the age of 73 years, one month, 15 days. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Fred Kernen and Jacob Kernen, the latter of whom died as a child, when the family lived in Berne, Switzerland. He was a resident of the Gravity community from the time his family moved to his present home at the age of nine until the time of his death. He was married to Miss Lula Mae Humphrey on March 24, 1914. To them two children were born, Ray and Dale, both of Conway. He is survived by his wife and two sons; two granddaughters, Sandra Jean and Sonya Jo-An; one grandson, Fredrick Lee; three brothers, John, Jake and Carl Kernen of Bedford; two sisters, Mrs. Rosa Mitchel of Bedford, Mrs. Mary Robey of Gravity. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Gravity, Friday afternoon, October 5, conducted by Rev. Howard DeVore. Burial in Lexington cemetery. |
