Obituary

Caleb Green was born January 12, 1842, in Chatham, Medina County, Ohio, and died September 23, 1912, at the home of his sister in Rio [Illinois].  In early manhood he married Delphia McCloud and theirs was a happy union until death claimed the mother about four years ago [1907].  On August 5, 1862, he enlisted at Oneida and served his country faithfully as a solider until he was mustered out at Arlington Heights June 20, 1865.  Owing to a wound received in the battle of Resaca, Georgia, he was left without the use of his eyes for some years before his death; but the great love of God's compensation was manifested in the departed one's life, for his spiritual sight was only made the stronger by this physical defect.  Mr. Green united with the M. E. church 50 years ago and for this length of time he was found a loyal and truehearted Christian.  He is survived by one son, Arthur, of Ray, Colorado; one brother of Agency, Iowa; four sisters, Lucy Ann of Caney, Kansas; Betsy A. of Quincy, Illinois; Mary A. of Oneida; Katherine M. of Rio.

The funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 p. m. from the home of Mrs. Catherine Willett, Rev. Huff [?] officiating.  The remains were then taken to Bedford, Iowa, for interment.  The pallbearers were: Mat O'Brien, William Shepherd, W. H. Gladman, Harry Arnold, Oscar Murray and Thomas Epperson.

Well Known Taylor Co. Democrat, Appeared In Good Health

Was 69 Years Old

Was Stricken At Community Sale Barn In Bedford, And Was Rushed to His Home

Joseph H. Keith, of Bedford, passed away at his home Saturday evening about 5:30, following a fainting spell, which was due to a heart attack, that occurred about 4:15 p.m., at the Community Sale Barn.

Mr. Keith lived on a farm until 1898, when he moved to Bedford, where he and his brother Will were associated in the horse buying business for nearly twenty years.  In 1916, Joe, as his friends knew him, was elected sheriff of Taylor County and served for four years.  In 1926 he was again given public recognition in his election as a member of the Board of Supervisors, all of which he attained as a staunch Democrat in a conceded Republican county.  Mr. Keith was also identified in many other activities of Bedford and Taylor County.

He was President of the Taylor County Fair Board at the time of his death, having been a member of the Board for many years.  He had also been a staunch and faithful member of the Knights of Pythias Lodge for many years, and last year filled the highest office of the local lodge---Chancellor Commander.

Obituary

Joseph H. [omer] Keith, son of James S. and Amanda Keith, was born in Licking County, Ohio, September 20, 1860, and died at his home in Bedford, Iowa, February 15, 1930, aged 69 years, 4 months and 25 days.  In early childhood he moved with his parents to McLain County, Illinois, residing near Saybrook where he grew to manhood.  He came to Taylor County, Iowa, in 1879, where he has since lived with the exception of two years, which he spent in Worth County, Missouri, near Grant City.

On March 25, 1886, he was united in marriage to Polly A. [dell] Helm who survives him.  To this union four children were born----Mrs. Zetta Thompson, Mrs. Della Moore, Mrs. Helen Timberlake, all of Bedford, Iowa, and Mrs. Loa Kinnison, who preceded him in death in 1923.  He also leaves five grandchildren, Allen, Alice and Robert Thompson; Mary Lois and Josephine Moore.  He was of a family of eight children, all of whom have preceded him in death, except two brothers, Charles Keith of Portland, Oregon; H. [illary] B. Keith of Phoenix, Arizona; and one sister, Mrs. Clinton Day [Maggie] of Hart, Michigan; also two step-sisters, Mrs. Andrew Reynolds of Council Bluffs, and Mrs. Geo. Keith [Mary Etta George] of Bedford.

The funeral services were held at the Christian Church, Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock, conducted by Rev. J. C. Harris.  Interment was made in Bedford cemetery.

Obituary -- Mrs. Elmer Thompson

Last rites for Mrs. Elmer Thompson, a long-time resident of the Bedford community, were held at the Shum Funeral Home, Friday, August 31, with burial in New Hope Cemetery south of Bedford.  J. D. Dreyer of St. Joseph officiated.

May Belle Wells, daughter of John [Jefferson] and Louisa [Caskey] Wells, was born in Douglas County, Ill., October 22, 1880 and passed away at her home in Bedford on August 28 at the age of 75 years, 10 months, six days.

She came with her pioneer parents to Taylor County, Iowa when a small child and spent the remainder of her life in this community.

She was married to Elmer Thompson in 1898 and to them were born eight children.  One daughter died in infancy and Ronald at the age of 19 years.

She is survived by three sons and three daughters: Paul Thompson, Claude Thompson, Mrs. Naomi Thomas, Mrs. Wilma Thomas of Bedford; Doyle Thompson of Castro Valley, Calif., Mrs. Aileen Rosenthal of St. Joseph.  Also by one sister, Mrs. M. [argaret] A. [ngeline] Margason of Bedford.

The Thompson family lived in the Eagle community south of Bedford for many years, Mr. and Mrs. Thompson moving into town several years ago.

Funeral services for Lloyd Oxley, age 82, of Mount Ayr, formerly of Bedford, who died Wednesday, March 1, 2006, at Greater Community Hospital in Creston, will be held Saturday, March 4, 2006, at 10:00 a.m. at the Shearer Cemetery. Visitation was held Friday from 3 to 8 with the family greeting friends from 7 to 8. Memorials can be given in Lloyd's name. Lloyd Irvin Oxley was born April 13, 1923, in Ross Township, near Bedford, Iowa the son of Ethan Irvin Oxley and Minnie Belle (Guthrie) Nowels Oxley. He grew up attending school at Ross Township No. 5. Lloyd's father died when he was only 11, so he had to grow up at an early age, and take over the family farm operation. On May 5, 1945, he was united in marriage to Leona Woldruff in Bedford. The couple continued to farm until 1972, when he and Leona moved to Odebolt, Iowa to work at a cattle ranch and feedlot as a ranch hand. He also worked in Grand River, and Guthrie Center, Iowa and Minatare, Nebraska and Hannibal, Missouri. In 1985, upon his retirement, they moved to Mount Ayr where they continued to live until his death.

Horses were his passion and life. He rode and broke horses often for other people and enjoyed spending time working with tack and saddles. He loved being around his family and was always joking with his grandkids, or just about anybody. After he retired, he liked watching his son Steve working on tractors. He and Leona would travel locally to country music shows in the area. He enjoyed playing cards, with 10-point pitch being his favorite game, and was lucky quite often!

Left to cherish Lloyd's memory are his loving wife of over 60 years, Leona Oxley of Mount Ayr; two sons, Carrol Oxley and wife Marilyn [Wiseman] of Clarinda; and Steven Oxley and wife Carol Lea of Mount Ayr; a granddaughter Nicole; a step-granddaughter Lori; two step-grandsons, Rick and Randy; nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Preceding Lloyd in death were his parents and two half-sisters, Mildred Smith and Wilma Majors.

May God grant comfort and strength to those who mourn Lloyd's passing.
