Mrs. John Baldwin, 84, Former Resident, Dies

Mrs. John Baldwin [Caroline Dorsey], 84, of Riverton, a former resident of Bedford, died at the hospital in Hamburg Tuesday, January 5.  She is survived by her son, Dr. Leon Baldwin and by three grandsons, all of whom are in the armed forces.

Mrs. Baldwin was a sister of the late Mrs. I. [saac] W. [olf] Scherich [Mary Dorsey] and an aunt of C. [lyde] E. [pler] Scherich of southeast of Bedford.

Mrs. Susan Roe, 83, Dies Here Jan. 4th

Mrs. Susan [Ball] Roe, 83, died at the Armstrong Nursing Home in Bedford, Monday, January 4, after being in failing health for several years.  She is survived by five children and several grandchildren.

The funeral services were held at the Wetmore Funeral Home at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon, conducted by Rev. G. L. Hufstader.  Burial was in the Bedford cemetery.

Mrs. Bruce Jared, 80, Dies At Home Here

Mrs. [Robert] Bruce Jared [Emily Josephine Scrivner], 80, died at her home in north Bedford on Monday, January 4, after a short illness.  She is survived by her husband, who is seriously ill, and by four children, Mrs. Will Robinson [Viola], Mrs. E. [dward] J. Hartman [Mabel], Frank Jared and John Jared.  There are also several grandchildren.

The funeral services were held at the Wetmore Funeral Home at 1 o'clock this afternoon, conducted by Rev. O. H. Hallgrimson.  Burial was in the Fairview cemetery.

Obituary

D. E. Chilcote

David Elmer Chilcote was born at Uniontown, Perry County, Ohio, Jan. 27, 1859, being the eldest son of Israel and Susan [Coleman] Chilcote.

In 1864 the family moved to Taylor County, Iowa, where he had since resided.  He was married to Harriet Luella Parks on Feb. 27, 1889.  To them were born six daughters, who, with the wife, survive.

They are Etta Mefferd of Pocahontas, Iowa; Beulah Walker of Loveland, Colo.; Edna Thomas of Gravity; Mary Marshall of Bedford; Grace Chancellor of Council Bluffs; Georgia Meyers of Shenandoah.

Surviving also are twenty-four grandchildren, four great grandchildren; two brothers, John Chilcote and Emery Chilcote of Bedford; and two sisters, Mrs. Frank Hamblin [Hester] of Sharpsburg and Mrs. Miles Litteer [Harriett Eva] of Conway; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Mary Chilcote of Conway and a brother-in-law, W. [allace] D. Leppo of Bedford.  One brother and three sisters preceded him in death.

The funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Conway Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. W. F. Overhulser of Bedford.  Burial was in the Lexington cemetery.

Mr. Chilcote was well known over the county, as he was a bridge foreman for Taylor County for thirty years.  He was also a member of the town council of Conway for twenty-four years.

William Leeper Rites Monday

Funeral services for William Henry Leeper, 86, of Bedford, were held June 13 at the Shum-Novinger Funeral Home with Rev. John D. Kerr officiating.  Mr. Leeper died June 10, 1966, at Pearl Terrace Manor here.  Interment was at Kirk Cemetery, Allendale, Mo.

William H. Leeper was born to William and Florence Leeper on April 7, 1880, in Decatur County, Ia.  His early life was spent in Farragut and Shenandoah.  While living in Shenandoah he united with the Baptist Church.

On December 23, 1903, he was united in marriage with Debbie E. Spencer.  They farmed throughout the Midwest.  In 1922, they moved to Bedford, where they have lived since, except for two years, which they spent in Grant City, Mo.

While in Bedford, he was custodian of the Bedford Presbyterian Church for many years.

Left with memories are his wife and one brother, Harry, of Grant City, Mo.

He will be greatly missed by his friends and loved ones.

Mrs. Walter Mason Dies

Mrs. Walter Mason [Hattie Mabel Thompson] died suddenly early Thursday morning at her home in west Clearfield.  While ill during the past few years, she was always cheerful.  She was a consistent member of the Christian church.  She loved her home and friends.  She is survived by her husband, Walter, one son, Olin and his wife [Rosalie Ratliff] and little son Jimmy.  Funeral services were held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Christian church, the Rev. William Howes officiating.

Robert Meikle Dies March 12 In Fresno

Graveside services were held March 16 at 10 a.m. at the Fairview Cemetery in Bedford, for Robert E. Meikle of Fresno, Calif., who died March 12 at the age of 46.  The services were conducted by Rev. C. Ray McCain.

Robert Elmer Meikle, son of William T. [homas] and Thelma A. [Hatcher] Meikle, was born at Bedford, Iowa, on July 11, 1931.  He grew to maturity in Bedford, where he attended the public schools.  On April 12, 1946, he confessed his faith in Jesus Christ, and was baptized into the fellowship of the Presbyterian Church.

Graduating from Grinnell College in 1954, Bob continued his studies at the University of Iowa, getting a degree in law.  For most of his working years, Bob was in the United States Air Force.

He was preceded in death by his father on July 9, 1976, and his mother, on September 12, 1974.

Left to cherish his memory are two sisters, Wilma O'Dougherty of Lakewood, Colo., and Julia Dougherty of Osceola, Iowa; and one brother, William T.[homas] Meikle II of Bedford, Ia.

Bob will best be remembered by his Bedford friends for his musical talent and sharp mind.

Emma Sorenson, 79, Final Rites Held March 20

Funeral services for Mrs. Kai (Emma) Sorenson, 79, of Bedford, held March 20 in Shum-Novinger Funeral Home, were conducted by Carl Cummings.  Mrs. Sorenson died March 17, 1978, in the Municipal Hospital in Clarinda.  Interment was at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford.

Emma Kathryn Larsen Sorenson, daughter of Soren and Mary Clauson Larsen, was born near Blair, Nebraska, December 7, 1898.

She grew to maturity in the Blair area where she attended the public school and was active in various youth groups.

In 1920 she moved to Omaha, Nebraska, and was united in marriage to Kai Sorenson in 1923.  They lived in Omaha until they moved to Taylor County Iowa in 1934 where they have since continued to reside.  They farmed until 1960 when they moved to Bedford, Iowa.

One son, Clyde, was born to this union.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and son, Clyde.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Kai, of the home; one brother, Chris Larsen, of Byland, Minnesota; grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church.

Her family and loved ones will remember her as a kind and loving wife and mother and she will be sadly missed by those who knew and loved her.
