Smith, Kathryn Young - Funeral services for Kathryn Smith, age 82 of Bedford were held Friday, July 10, 1998, at the United Christian Presbyterian Church in Bedford. Burial was held in the Fairview Cemetery in Bedford.

Kathryn Smith was born to Clifford and Elta Boydstun Young on December 25, 1915, in Abingdon, Illinois. Growing up she attended the Sharpsburg Community School, graduating with the Class of 1933. She is also a graduate of Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri and the University of Nebraska in Lincoln with a degree in Business and Education. On January 25, 1944, she was united in marriage to Donald Smith in St. Joseph, Missouri. To this loving union two children were born, Susan Kay and Philip Charles.

Katie was a life-long area resident. Katie and Don made their home in the Clearfield area before moving to Bedford in 1952. Katie was a wonderful mother and homemaker. She also taught business and mathematics, was an insurance agent, a banker and all around volunteer. Katie was always vitally involved with the furture of Bedford and actively supported, as well as headed up, many projects concerning the city.

Katie was a fifty year member of the United Christian Presbyterian Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher for many years. She was a fifty year member of the John F. Hardin American Legion Post No. 164 Auxiliary; a sixty plus year member of the Kappa Delta Sorority; a fifty year member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood; she served as chairman of the local bloodmobile for many years; she was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and she was selected as Citizen of the Year for the local Lions Club for 1992-93. Katie was awarded the Iowa Governor's Volunteer Award for Adult Literacy and was given special recognition from the Bedford Chamber of Commerce in 1997 for her unending devotion to the City of Bedford.

Left to cherish Katie's memory are her daughter, Susan Benson and husband Mike and granddaughter, Elizabeth Anne of Bedford; her son, Philip Smith and wife Gayle and grandchildren, Julia Ann and Justin Philip of Angier, North Carolina; two nephews, William Young, Jr., of Corning and Robert Young of Clinton, Pennsylvania, along with many, many friends.

Katie is preceded in death by her parents, Clifford and Elta; her husband, Donald in 1981; a brother, William Young, Sr.; a sister-in-law, Margaret F. Young; a niece, Sue Ann Young; a nephew, Boyd Young and a grandson, Andrew Michael Benson.

Katie was a remarkable woman. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Smith, Marian Lucile Lane - Funeral services for Marian Smith, age 96, of Lenox, formerly of Reinbeck, Iowa, who died Friday, October 12, 2007 at Valparaiso, Indiana will be held Wednesday, October 17, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. at the Lenox United Methodist Church. Visitation with the family was held 7-8 p.m., Tuesday at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Lenox, with an Eastern Star Service to be held at 7:00. Marian Lucile Lane Smith was born November 22, 1910 in Masonville, Delaware County, Iowa. She passed away on Friday, October 12, 2007 in Valparaiso, Indiana. Marian was the daughter of Irl Ray Lane and Irma Mae (Packard) Lane. Her family homesteaded in Kenaston, Saskatchewan, Canada when she was two years old, and her elementary education was in Canada. Her parents returned to Iowa in 1925 to a farm near Manchester, Iowa, where she attended and graduated from high school. She was a graduate of the University of Dubuque, where she received her Elementary Music degree, and had advanced classes in music at Northwest Missouri State University and the University of Iowa. Her first teaching job was in a one-room country school at Sherrills Mound in Dubuque County, and then at Stanley, Iowa, where she met her future husband, Thomas Keith Smith, the band instructor at Stanley. Marian and Keith were married at Manchester, Iowa on August 10, 1937. They had one son, Gary. Keith taught instrumental music and band at Dexter, Iowa and at Reinbeck, Iowa until the 1950's, when he retired from teaching. He and Marian operated a custom kitchen cabinet, upholstery, and drapery business in Reinbeck, until Keith returned to teaching in the early 60's, as high school band instructor at Orient and Lenox, Iowa. Marian also taught in the Lenox Elementary School from 1968 until she retired. She was also church organist at the Methodist churches in Reinbeck and at Lenox, and several Eastern Star chapters. Marian and Keith taught piano and organ in their home in Lenox for many years, to several generations of students. Their students participated in National Music Federation Festivals, winning many honors. Marian was a devoted member of the Lenox United Methodist Church, and was Mission Chairman for many years.
She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, past Regent of Nancy McKay Harsh chapter in Creston, and was State Pianist for the DAR for 10 years; member of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants; a member of the Order of Eastern Star, of which she was a Past Matron, and 50-Year member in 1988; member and past High Priestess of the Order of White Shrine, in Cedar Falls-Bethany, and Creston; member Grand Cross of Color, Order of Rainbow Girls; and the P.E.O. Sisterhood.

Preceding Marian in death were her parents, husband Keith, two brothers, George Beecher Lane and Bernard Eugene Lane, and a sister, Alice M. Gilmore.

Survivors include her son Dr. Gary Smith Merrill and wife Claire, of Valparaiso, Indiana, a sister Lillian Irma Bartlett, of Cincinnati, Ohio, three grandsons, Christopher Mark Smith and Thomas Edgar Smith, of New Jersey, and Keith Noah Merrill, of Vermont, a sister-in-law Evelyn Merrill, many nieces and nephews, and countless friends.

Nellie (Nelle) Marie Heatherington Smith was born November 12, 1921, on a farm near Mount Etna, Adams County, Iowa. The youngest daughter of James Ritchie and Elizabeth Anne Miller Edwards Heatherington, and departed this life to a home already reserved for her with the Lord on January 8, 2007.

Nelle grew up in the rural Gravity area where she attended country school, graduating from Corning High School with the Class of 1938. Her father lost the family farm during the Great Depression. She was united in marriage to Russell P. McGee on November 10, 1940, to this loving union a son, Larry Alan McGee was born. During World War II, while her husband was overseas, she worked at the Martin Bomber Plant Omaha. Her husband Russell was killed on Luzon, Philippine Islands during World War II. After the war ended, Nelle returned to Bedford with her son Larry and worked in the office at a local elevator. She was later united in marriage to Kenneth W. Smith. Kenneth passed away on December 18, 1994.

Nelle worked for many years as the Deputy County Treasurer for Taylor County. She was the Bedford City Clerk for two years and Board Secretary for the Bedford Community School District for twenty-six years, retiring in 1986. Nelle enjoyed quilting and was a well-read woman who enjoyed the outdoors, the Lake of Three Fires and often spent time going on walks. Her family was very important to her and she always made the effort to stay close to them over the years. Nelle was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bedford.

Left to cherish Nelle’s memory are her son Larry A. McGee; two granddaughters, Susan Sutton and husband Robert and their two children, Taylor and Marisa; and Sarah Igel and her daughter, Kortni; former daughter-in-law Judith Heyle McGee, all of Omaha; a sister Laura Morgan of Spokane, Washington; along with many nieces, nephews, relatives and a community of friends.

Preceding Nelle in death are her parents; husband Russell in 1945; husband Kenneth in 1994; two sisters, Margaret Sexton and Isabel McCoy; and two brothers, James and William Heatherington.

Spencer, Clyde Allen - Funeral services for Clyde Spencer, age 74 of Bedford, who died Monday, August 18, 2008 at his home were held Thursday, August 21, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Bedford. Clyde Allen Spencer, was born February 3, 1934 on a farm south of Bedford in Taylor County, Iowa to John Howard Spencer and Helen Elizabeth (Smith) Spencer. When Clyde was just nine years old his family purchased a home and moved to Bedford. In 1951, Joann Waugh moved to Bedford, she and Clyde met and dated for three years and on April 2, 1954, the couple were united in marriage. To this loving union six sons were born, Kenny, Calvin, Mark, David, Todd and Bryan. For eleven years Clyde worked for Vane Lucas at Lucas Feeds. He then went to work as a Machine Mechanic at O’Bryan Brothers, a position he held until 1978, when he went to work at Eveready in Maryville, where he worked for almost twenty years, retiring in 1998.

Clyde was a very civic minded man, always feeling that you should ‘give back’ to the community you lived in. He was a forty-five year member of the Bedford Fire Department, serving until ill-health made it impossible for him to continue; one of the founding members of the Bedford Volunteer Ambulance Service where he also served as an EMT; served several terms on the Bedford City Council and had also been a member of the Bedford Lion’s Club. He was a tremendous people person who always put other people’s needs above his own. Always kind and considerate, and possessing a great memory, Clyde was often called upon by the community to assist in various situations. Family was so very special to Clyde, he always looked forward to family get-togethers, he was especially proud of being a grandpa and great-grandpa.

Left to cherish Clyde’s memory are his loving wife of fifty-four years, Joann Spencer; his six sons, Kenny Spencer and wife Belinda; Calvin Spencer and wife Vicky; Mark Spencer and wife Penny; David Spencer; Todd Spencer and wife Cindy and Bryan Spencer and wife Carrie, all of Bedford; two brothers, Raymond Spencer of Joliet, Illinois; and Roy Spencer of Roodhouse, Illinois; two sisters, Rose Johnson and husband Ray of Corning; and Evelyn “Evie” Barnes and husband Michael of Fort Myers Beach, Florida; twenty-one grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; along with many nieces, nephews, relatives and a community of friends.

Preceding Clyde in death are his parents John Howard Spencer in 1948; Helen Elizabeth (Smith) Spencer in 2000; and three brothers, Donnie Spencer in 1960; Howard Junior Spencer, in 1996; and Ivan Spencer in 1997.


Clyde was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and community servant.

Sprague, Floyd Lee - Funeral services for Bud Sprague, age 80 of Bedford, who died Monday, June 2, 2008 at the Bedford Nursing & Rehab Center were held Thursday, June 5, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Bedford. Floyd Lee Sprague, Jr., was born April 26, 1928, on a farm in Taylor County, Iowa the son of Floyd Lee Sprague and Edna Pearl (Daley) Sprague. He grew up attending rural Siam Country School, graduating with the Class of 1946 from the New Market High School. On June 25, 1950 he was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Betty Lou Maley. To this loving family two sons were born, Terry Lee and Richard Allen.

Bud was a lifetime farmer and steward of the land in Taylor County. He started farming south of Siam shortly after his marriage to Betty, moving to a farm in Benton Township in 1959, where they lived until 1997 when they moved into Bedford. The couple truly enjoyed farming and the lifestyle it provided their family. Tilling the soil, practicing conservation and being a true steward of the land always provided them with great satisfaction as they watched their farming operation grow through their children and grandchildren.

Bud was a farmer through and through. It was who he was. He was always passionate about his family and grandkids. He enjoyed raising his kids and being active with them in all aspects of their lives. On the side, Bud worked at the Clarinda Livestock Auction, weighing the livestock for auctions for many years. After his retirement, he and Betty enjoyed spending their winters in Arizona. He was a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge, being inducted in 1951. He was also a member of the Taylor County Farm Bureau, the Bedford Saddle Club and the Church of Christ, having been baptized on December 21, 1939.

Left to cherish Bud’s memory is his loving wife of 58 years, Betty Sprague of Bedford; two sons, Dr. Terry Lee Sprague and wife Mary Jane of Audubon, Iowa; and Rick Sprague and wife Pam of Bedford; four grandchildren, Bruce Sprague and wife Jill of Syracuse, Nebraska; Kristen Lucas and husband Jon of Rock Port, Missouri; Steven Sprague of Audubon, Iowa; and Justin Sprague, stationed with the United States Army in Afghanistan; five great-grandchildren, Colton and Mayson Sprague; and Ethan, Caleb and Ryan Lucas; a sister, Kathleen Teeters and husband Dean of New Market; a sister-in-law, Lois Marie Marino and husband Rol of Brea, California; along with many other nieces, nephews, family members and a community of friends.

Sprague, Marjorie Aileen Tackett - Graveside services for Marjorie Sprague, 79, of Villisca were held Thursday, November 19, 2009 at Athelston Cemetery, Athelston, Iowa. She died November 15th at the Clarinda Regional Health Center, Clarinda, Iowa.

Marjorie Aileen (Tackett) Sprague was born December 24, 1929, in Blockton, Iowa, the daughter of James Franklin Tackett and Laura Etta (Dillon) Tackett. She had nine brothers and sisters. At an early age she moved to Villisca with her family. She completed the 8th grade in Villisca where she lived most of her life.

She was a housewife and a waitress. She enjoyed crocheting and reading. She was a great baker and always had a dessert on hand for visitors.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents; son Montie Sprague; son Dana Bowman; brothers Asa Tackett, Raymond Tackett, Kenneth Tackett, and infant brother Harry Tackett; sisters Maxine Lammers, Elizabeth Ellinger, Vera Louise Barnes, Ruby Hill, and Lillian (Juanita) Foreman.

She is survived by her sons Michael Sprague and Kenneth (Teresa) Sprague of Villisca, Dale (Pam) Bowman of Eddyville, James Bowman of Tennessee; grandchildren Carrie (Brian) Lushinsky, Robin Sprague, Duane Michael (Lilly) Sprague, Montie (Crystal) Sprague, Peter Jason (Maria) Sprague, Toby (Sherish) Sprague, and Kara Bowman; nine great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and friends. Spring, Winnie Mae Else - Funeral services for Winnie Spring, age 98, of Lenox, who died Saturday, August 29, 2009 at the Alegent Health Mercy Hospital in Corning will be held Tuesday, September 1, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at the Lenox United Methodist Church. Winnie Mae Spring, youngest daughter of Fred and Mary Josephine Else, was born May 30, 1911 outside of Guss, Iowa on the family farm. She left this life to rejoin her family and friends on August 29, 2009.

Winnie grew up on the farm. After her mother's death Winnie spent her high school years with her brothers and sisters, therefore she attended several different schools and was thrilled to graduate from Corning High School in 1931. Winnie continued her education with night and summer classes and one of her proudest achievements was receiving her bachelor's degree from Drake University in 1971.

After graduating from high school Winnie taught country school for two years before finding her life partner in Clyde Spring. They were united in marriage on December 28, 1932 in Maryville, Missouri. The pair were blessed with 5 children, Clytha, Berdine, Janette, Larry, and Reldon.

In 1961 Clyde and Winnie became members of the Prescott Order of the Eastern Star. Together they traveled many miles attending meetings and functions. Winnie served as Worthy Matron in 1986, 1989, and 1990. As well as serving as Worthy Matron she held a variety of other positions in Eastern Star. She served as Grand Warder from1989-1990 and traveled extensively all over Iowa with her traveling companion Ellen Grace Brown. She enjoyed meeting up with her fellow officers who served with her and the group-who dubbed themselves the Peanut Clusters-had regular reunions. They just had their annual gathering in August 2009 which she thoroughly enjoyed.

Clyde and Winnie farmed for several years near Guss and Corning, Iowa before they purchased a farm north of Prescott in 1944 where they lived for 31 years. While living on the farm Winnie always grew a big garden and canned lots of her garden treats. Winnie returned to teaching school in 1953 and taught country school for 5 years before taking a position teaching 7th grade at Prescott and retired there in 1975.

After retirement Clyde and Winnie moved to Las Vegas, NV for two years. They decided to move back to Iowa and built a home in Lenox. After their retirement they enjoyed traveling and visiting family all over the country.

Winnie was an active member in the Prescott Methodist Church and later the Lenox United Methodist Church. She served as Circle Leader and U.M.W. President and found greeters for each Sunday's service for over 10 years.

Winnie was an avid card player and whenever friends and family gathered she could be counted on for a game of cards. She loved to tell jokes and make others laugh. She enjoyed reading and writing and could always be counted on to have a good book on hand to share. She enjoyed quilting and made many quilts for her friends and family. Winnie was a wonderful cook and her family especially enjoyed her roast and noodles and delicious pies, especially her rhubarb and peach.

Winnie was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother, and friend. Her family and friends will always remember her unfailing kindness and wonderful sense of humor.

Welcoming her to her new life are husband Clyde; Winnie's parents, Fred and Mary Josephine Else; her siblings Bessie Lewis, Erma Clowser, Myrtle Corbin, Lester Else, Francis Else, Cassie Foster, Archie Else, and Victor Else; daughter Janette Johnson; grandson Curtis Johnson; father and mother-in-law John and Cora Spring; and son-in-law Kenneth Black.

Stamps, Kim Marie - Graveside services for Kim Stamps, age 41, of Corning, formerly of the Gravity / New Market area, who died Saturday, June 13, 2009, in Omaha, Nebraska were held Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Guss. Kim Marie Stamps was born January 3, 1968, in Clarinda, Iowa the daughter of Gary Stamps and Judy (Whitehead) Stamps. She grew up living with her family in the Gravity and New Market areas. Kim was a precious child who loved her family and friends. Ice cream was her favorite food and she loved being outdoors, especially when she was able to go swimming or play with water.

Kim had lived in Glenwood for many years, returning to Corning in 1996, where she lived at Midwest Opportunities in the Blue Grass View Unit. Her advocate was Cindy Armstrong. Kim was always willing to share that special grin with anyone and 'lit-up' when ever her family and friends were around.

Left to cherish the memory of this very special daughter, sister and friend are her parents, Gary and Judy Stamps; her brother and sister Kris Stamps and Kelli Pederson, all of New Market; two nephews Brandon Morrison and wife Cassey of St. Joseph, Missouri; and Dustin Morrison of New Market; one niece, Lisa Morrison of Benbrook, Texas; and one grand-nephew, Payton Morrison of St. Joseph, Missouri; along with many other family members and friends.

Martha Elise Stanger was born May 20, 1917, in Madison, Wisconsin, the daughter of William B. Cartwright and Bessie (Brand) Cartwright. She graduated from high school in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Following graduation from high school, she took her nurses’ training in Pittsburgh and later moved with her parents to Des Moines, Iowa. She served her country in the United States Army Nurses Corp as a Second Lieutenant in the Pacific Theatre during World War II., March 15, 1945-May 18, 1946. Upon her return to the states, she worked at the Veteran’s Hospital in Des Moines. On December 29, 1949, she was united in marriage to Frank Stanger in Des Moines at her parents’ home. They were blessed with two daughters, Carole and Diana.

Martha and Frank all of their married life in the Lenox area. After their daughters’ graduation from high school, Martha became the school nurse. Martha was a member of the Lenox Methodist Church, Eastern Star and the American Legion. Her home and family were of the foremost importance to Martha. She adopted her husband’s family as her own. She also enjoyed reading, sports---especially baseball, music and doing jigsaw puzzles.

Martha is survived by her daughters, Carole Stanger of Atlantic, Iowa and Diana Smith and husband Keith of Maryville, Missouri; granddaughter, Kylee Smith of Maryville, Missouri; her nieces, nephews and many friends.

Preceding Martha in death were her parents; husband, Frank Stanger in March 2003; brother, Thomas B. Cartwright.

Neva Verneil (Besco) Stephens was born May 15, 1922 in rural Taylor County, Iowa, near Platteville the daughter of Henry Besco and Ethel (Deaver) Besco. She grew up attending school and graduated from the Conway High School, with the Class of 1940, where she had served as Class President. She then taught rural school for one year. While singing, playing music and square dancing in the country school she met her future husband, Orville Stephens. The couple was united in marriage on May 24, 1941 in Maryville, Missouri. Two daughters were born to bless this union June and Judy.

In 1947 the couple moved north of Bedford to their present home. She was an active part of the farming business and piano business with her husband Orville. Together they enjoyed traveling and square dancing. Verneil was a tireless worker and officer in many organizations such as Order of the Eastern Star, Rainbow, Past Matrons, Lioness, Mizpah Club, 20th Century Club and Church Women United. She was a life-time member of the Taylor County Historical Society and active at the museum. She volunteered for many things such as Bingo at the American Legion Club and delivering Meals on Wheels. Verneil was an active member of the United Christian Presbyterian Church where she enjoyed singing in the choir and at funerals. She was a Deacon at the church and helped her dear friend, Ellen Lemke, with music at the nursing home at times.

Left to cherish Verneil’s memory are her two daughters June Park and husband Harold of Bedford; and Judy Bentley of Anchorage, Alaska; three grandchildren, Craig Lock and wife Carmelita; Jerry Lock; and Steve Bentley and wife Elizabeth; seven great-grandchildren, Colby Lock, Chris Lock, Craig Lock, Nicole Lock, Courtney Lock, Mason Lock and Alaina Bentley; one great-great-grandson, Carson Lock; a brother-in-law, Gene Becherer; and a sister-in-law, Doris Coon; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends in the community.

Preceding Verneil in death are parents; her husband Orville in 1986; a sister Nadine Becherer; and two sisters-in-law Letha Schurr and Elva Akers.

The family feels that Verneil wanted to be with her husband Orville for her birthday. We will all miss her, but know she is in a better place with God and Orville.

Stewart, Chloe Ruby Daniels - Chloe Ruby Stewart passed away November 15, 2009 at Bedford Nursing & Rehab in Bedford, Iowa at the age of 98. She was born October 25, 1911 in Taylor County, southwest of Bedford, Iowa to Levi Riley and Myrtle Alice (Huey) Daniels.

She graduated from Valley Country School where two different years she missed the whole year and would go the next year taking two grades at once-acing them. She could figure faster in her head than with a calculator.

She married Cleo E. Stewart December 31, 1929 at the Christian Church parsonage in Bedford. They farmed southwest of Bedford near the Valley Community School until moving in 1973 to the farm where Chloe lived until she fell and moved into Bedford Nursing & Rehab. She was an active farmwife as well as hired man raising a big garden and canning for the family, raising a strawberry bed that was very large, and quilted for the grandchildren.

Chloe worked as a waitress for many years until she hurt her knee at age 75. She continued gardening, driving, cooking, baking cookies and bread and other activities until she was 95 in 2007. Chloe and her husband were a couple that invited others to stay with them and never turned anyone away when they needed a place to stay or food. She was a generous and gracious woman giving of her time and talents.

Chloe was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Cleo in July 1984; brother, Francis Daniels and his wife Hazel; grandson Cleo Edwin; three nephews and three brothers-in-law; and son-in-law, Cecil Beery in Aug. 2003.

She is survived by her daughter, Darlene Beery of Bedford, Iowa; granddaughter Marsha Davison and husband Terry of Hopkins, Missouri; grandson Mark Beery of Bedford, Iowa; great-grandchildren Peggy Hardy and husband Bart of St. Joseph, Missouri, Jeremy Davison and wife Angie of Hopkins, Missouri, and Danny Davison and fianc� Amanda Kapp of Cedarville, Ohio; great-great grandchild, Ayden Hardy of St. Joseph, Missouri; sisters-in-law Mable Stewart of Bedford, Iowa, Austie Lindey of San Diego, California and Golda Hasenjaeger of Edina, Missouri; nieces, nephews, cousins, and good friends.

Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009 at Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel in Bedford with Rev. Randy Alman officiating. Interment at Hopkins Cemetery, Hopkins, Missouri. Memorials are suggested to Bedford Ambulance. Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel provided arrangements.
Stewart, Donald "Whitey" Glen - Funeral services for Donald Stewart, age 80 of Villisca, formerly of Blockton, who died Wednesday, February 18, 2009 at the Clarinda Regional Health Center were held Saturday, February 21, 2009 at 10:30.m. at the Blockton Christian Church. Donald “Whitey” Glen Stewart was born February 24, 1928 in Conway, Iowa the son of David Alfred Stewart and Amy Belle (Matheny) Stewart. He grew up attending rural schools and then entered the United States Army on January 11, 1946 in Fort Snelling, Minnesota, faithfully serving his country until July 10, 1947 when he was discharged in Williamsfield, Arizona. On February 16, 1948 he was united in marriage to Donna Mae Henson in Bedford, Iowa, and the couple made their home in Blockton. Two children were born to bless their lives, Allen and Sheila.

Whitey was a truck driver and farmer most of his working life. He was a strong ‘people person’ who enjoyed playing cards. Whitey never met a stranger and he always enjoyed telling jokes, especially ‘blonde jokes’. He enjoyed camping, bowling, playing golf and especially spending time with his grandchildren. Whitey was active in the Blockton American Legion, the Bethany Masonic Lodge 320 of Blockton, Iowa. He was a proud member of the Clearfield Lion’s Club where he actively participated in the Iowa State Fair Shuttle Service for many, many years.

Left to cherish the memories of a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend are his loving wife of sixty-one years, Donna Mae Stewart of Villisca; a son Allen Stewart and wife Lyn of Sterling, Illinois; a daughter Sheila Haidsiak and husband Lee of Villisca; three brothers David “Boge” Stewart and wife Wylene of Clearfield; Larry Stewart and Fern Green of Zillah, Washington; and Dick Stewart and wife Debi of Creston; a sister Christina Wall of Bedford; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren along with many other relatives and friends.

Preceding Whitey in death are his parents David and Amy Stewart and two brothers Arlo Stewart and Dwight “Doc” Stewart.

Stewart, Donna Mae Henson - Donna Mae Stewart was born February 15, 1930 at Truro, Iowa to Earl Albert Henson and Flossie Fern (Duncan) Henson. She entered into rest Thursday evening, April 23, 2009 at the Clarinda Regional Health Center at the age of 79.

Following high school Donna Mae worked briefly for her father at the implement store in Blockton. She married Donald "Whitey" Stewart February 16, 1948. They were blessed with two children, Allen and Sheila. The couple resided in Blockton the majority of their life. For most of her working life, Donna Mae worked at Melvin Hardware in Blockton until retirement.

Retirement allowed her to spend most of her time with her family, friends and the hobbies she enjoyed. She loved to quilt, sew, embroider, crochet and make crafts of all kinds.

She also enjoyed cooking and was well known for her pies. She and Whitey attended the Iowa State Fair for many years as part of the Clearfield Lions Club. She especially enjoyed the crafts and sewing exhibits and classes at the fair.

Donna Mae is survived by her two children, Allen Stewart and wife Lyn of Sterling, Illinois and Shelia Haidsiak and husband Lee of Villisca, Iowa; her grandchildren Ashton Crew and her husband Richard and their son Triston, Diane McBride and husband Ken and their daughter Kylie, Jennifer Haidsiak-Riggle and husband David and their three children Veronica, Samantha, and Blake, Paul Haidsiak and wife April and their two children Emily and Brandon, Tara McCormick and husband Jason and their sons Michael and Sean; brother Orlin Henson of Bethany, Missouri; and sister-in-law Kathleen Henson-Drake of Blockton, Iowa.

Preceding her in death are her parents; her husband Donald "Whitey", brother Lester Henson, sister Hazel LeGore and husband Clark, and sister-in-law Delores Henson.

Funeral services were held Monday, April 27, 2009 at the Christian Church in Blockton, Iowa with Rev. Scott Marcum officiating. Interment was at Rose Hill Cemetery, Blockton, Iowa. A memorial fund is being established. Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel of Bedford provided arrangements.
Stewart, Wylene Marie Shipley - Funeral services for Wylene Stewart were held Monday, Jan. 18, 2010 at the Christian Church in Blockton, Iowa with Rev. Scott Marcum officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Blockton.
Wylene Marie (Shipley) Stewart was born in Stanton, Nebraska on September 19, 1938 the daughter of Frederick and Ruth Shipley, and passed away peacefully with her family by her side on January 15, 2010 in Des Moines, Iowa at the age of 71. Wylene grew up living throughout Nebraska during her childhood. She graduated from Geneva High School in Geneva, Nebraska. She was united in marriage to Donald Horton in 1961 and lived in Omaha, Nebraska. Into this union were born Fredrick Bernard, Donald John and Sandra Ann. Wylene and Donald dissolved their marriage and she met David Drexel Stewart.
Wylene and David moved to Yakima, Washington and were united in marriage on April 6, 1966. Into this union was born Marlene Kay Stewart and Cindy Belle Stewart. Wylene was also blessed with 4 step children, Judy Kay Jensen, Tina Mae Abbott, David L. Stewart and Connie sue Howell. Wylene and her family lived in Yakima, Washington until 1976. The family then moved to Clearfield, Iowa to be closer to David’s family where she resided until her death.
Wylene was also blessed with 27 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren who she loved very much. Wylene loved to play bingo, volunteer at congregate meals in Clearfield, play cards, listen to country music at local jam sessions, do search-a-words, put together jig saw puzzles and play slots at casinos. She was also involved with the Legion Auxiliary in Clearfield.
Wylene is survived by her husband David; daughters Sandra Donner (Scott), Marlene Stewart, Cindy Stewart, step daughters Judy Pask (Paul), Connie Howell (Tom), son Donald Horton (Donna) and step son David Stewart (Cindy) as well as many extended family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents Fred and Ruth Shipley, her sister Katharine Saatmaan, brother Edward Shipley, son Fred Horton, step daughter Tina Abbott, step son Fred Abbott, grandson Cord Abbott and granddaughter Cassandra Cheatham. Wylene will be missed by her entire circle of family and many friends. Watson-Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr, Iowa is in charge of the arrangements for Mrs. Stewart. A memorial fund has been established in her name to be decided later.
Strong, Thelma Joy Ayers - Funeral Services for Thelma Strong, age 84 of Bedford who died Friday, December 17, 2004 at her home were held Tuesday, December 21, 2004 at 11:00 a.m at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Bedford. Thelma Joy (Ayers) Strong was born January 7, 1920 in Huron, South Dakota. She was the oldest of thirteen children born to Pearl Joy Ayers and Lola Mae Heater Ayers. While she was growing up, her father was a farm hand, so the family lived in various states. She graduated from Macedonia High School with the Class of 1938, and was united in marriage to Lester Strong in Maryville, Missouri. Together they farmed and lived most of their life in the Gravity area.

Thelma was a wonderful seamstress. In fact, she was known locally as the “community seamstress”. She could fix anything from patching a tear in clothing to creating a beautiful wedding dress. She enjoyed helping Lester on the farm and truly looked forward to spending time with her family and friends. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Forever Young Club and had been a 4-H Leader, and involved in the ‘Just For Fun Club’.

Left to cherish Thelma’s memory are her eight brothers & sisters: Rosalie Jarrett of Glenwood; Don Ayers of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Norine Fornstrom of Omaha, Nebraska; Kathleen Schroder of Omaha, Nebraska; Dixie Rose and husband Frank of Carson, Iowa; Merle Ayers of Fremont, Nebraska; Gloria South and husband Larry of Council Bluffs, Iowa; and Victor Ayers of Carson, Iowa; a special friend, Pamela Calfee of Gravity, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Sturm, Cleo Leon - Private graveside family services for Cleo Sturm, age 87, of the Clearfield/Lenox area, who died Friday, December 15, 2006 at Clearview Home in Clearfield were held Monday, December 18, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at the West Fairview Cemetery in Lenox with military rites accorded by the Parkinson American Legion Post No. 250. Cleo Leon Sturm was born December 18, 1918, on a farm near Sharpsburg, Iowa the son of Arthur Sturm and Ethel May (Leonard) Sturm. He grew up attending school in Sharpsburg, graduating with the Class of 1936. After graduation he went to work for the Sheridan Egg & Cream Company. On April 5, 1941, he was united in marriage to Alfreda Reynolds in Albany, Missouri. In 1944, Cleo joined the United States Navy serving in the South Pacific Theatre during World War II. After his discharge, he returned home to farm. The couple purchased a farm between Lenox and Clearfield in the early 1950’s. Cleo also worked as a part-time United States Postal Carrier for over thirty years. In March of 1981 they sold their farm equipment and moved to Lenox where Cleo worked full-time as a mail carrier for few years. His wife Alfreda passed away in 1986. Declining health forced Cleo to enter the Lenox Care Center in January in 2004 moving to the Clearview Home in 2005.

Cleo was a member of the Lenox Christian Church; the Noble Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M. of Clearfield; the Clearfield Lion’s Club; the Parkinson American Legion Post No. 250; he was a thirty year member of the National Rural Letter Carrier’s Association; and was also a member of the M.F.A. Cleo and Alfreda traveled for several years after retirement spending time in the south during the winter. He also enjoyed going to auctions, he often said “He had made so many good deals, he almost went broke!”

Left to cherish Cleo’s memory are his three sons, Dave of Greene, Iowa; Dale of Fargo, North Dakota; and Duane and wife Reasa of Clarinda; a sister, Leona Minnick and husband Homer of Kent; fourteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; along with many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Sunderman, Russell Kenneth - Funeral services for Russell Sunderman, age 80 of Clarinda, Iowa, who died Friday, May 8, 2009 at the Eiler House, Clarinda, Iowa were held Monday, May 11, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at the Ritchie Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa with Russ Clark and Loren Daly officiating. Russell Kenneth Sunderman was born February 27, 1929 in Clarinda, Iowa and he passed away May 8, 2009 at the Eiler House, Clarinda, Iowa. He was the third of four children of Harlie J. and Beulah (Newman) Sunderman. Russell grew up in the rural Clarinda area and was a 1947 graduate of Clarinda High School.

On August 6, 1949, Russell was united in marriage Phyllis Baker. This union was blessed with three children, Kathy K, Jennie V. and Jay D. Russell and Phyllis raised their family on farms in the Siam and New Market area until retiring in 1990. Farming was something Russell enjoyed his entire life. If it wasn’t a John Deere tractor or a Ford pickup it wasn’t worth having according to Russell. In his retirement years he continued to help son, Jay, on the farm. Also during retirement Russell and Phyllis enjoyed spending the winter months in Yuma, Arizona, with friends from all over the United States and Canada.

Russell has been a member of the Siam Church or Christ since 1951, serving in the capacity of deacon for many years. Russell also served fourteen years on the Board of Directors for the Farmers Mutual Telephone Company, with two of those years as President of the New Market Town and Country Store. Russell was a member of the New Market Civic Club for many years and served as its president during the 1976 bi-centennial celebration. For many years Russell has enjoyed volunteering at the pick-up and tractor pulls and working the bingo stand at the New Market 4th of July celebration.

Sweeney, Hubert - ritchie Jan 30, 2009 St Patrick's church Lenox
Sweeney, Jon Michael - Jon Michael Sweeney was born November 17, 1961, at the Greater Community Hospital in Creston, Iowa, the son of F.W. (Bill) Sweeney and Marjorie Alice (Knodle) Sweeney. He grew up attending school in Prescott and graduated with the Class of 1980. After high school, Jon attended Southwestern Community College in Creston and obtained an Associates Degree in Business. On September 17, 1983, Jon was united in marriage to Debora Shires at the Prescott United Church. Three children were born to bless this union, Alicia Kay, Tonya Michelle and Lucas Jon. On June 7, 2003 he was wed to Carol Johnson in Winterset.

Jon farmed and raised cattle all of his life, being especially proud of his cattle herds. While Jon continued farming he also worked at Barker Implement, Creston Motor Company and NAPA. Jon enjoyed NASCAR racing and was a fixture at the Adams County Speedway. He had traveled to Brainerd, Minnesota and Talledega, Alabama to watch races.

Left to cherish Jon’s memory are his wife Carol Sweeney of Des Moines; two daughters, Alicia Sweeney of Prescott; and Tonya Sweeney of Storm Lake; a son, Lucas Sweeney of Fontanelle; bringing much joy to Jon’s life was his newly born grandson, Austin Sweeney of Prescott; two brothers, Larry Sweeney and wife Phyllis of West Des Moines; and Kevin Sweeney and wife Debbie of Lenox; two sisters, Alice Reed of Creston; and Shelley Pettit and husband Mike of Norwalk; former wife Debbie Westphal of Fontanelle; former sister-in-law, Peggy Sweeney of Britt; former brother-in-law, Alan Adkisson of Corning; along with many nieces, nephews, relatives and close friends.

Preceding Jon in death are his parents Bill and Marge Sweeney and former brother-in-law, John Reed.

Sweeney, Shane - Shane Sweeney, 30, died Saturday, December 8, 2007 of a sudden heart attack at his home in Des Moines. Funeral services will be held 10:30am Thursday, December 13, 2007 at the American Legion Hall in Lenox, Iowa with burial to follow at North Fairview Cemetery there. Visitation begins after 2 pm Wednesday at Ritchie Funeral Home in Lenox where the family will receive friends from 5 to 8 pm.

Shane was born in Creston and was raised on farms in the Prescott and Lenox area. He graduated from Lenox High School in 1995 and earned his Bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Northern Iowa. Shane worked as a C.P.A. at Flagg & Company in Des Moines. On August 6, 2005 he married Meghann Ryan Wild and they made their home in Des Moines.

Shane enjoyed music and sports, especially the Boston Red Sox and the Florida Gators. Spending time with his family, friends, and his dogs, Fenway and Swampy, was his favorite pastime.

Shaner P was a loyal and devoted husband, son, brother, uncle, friend, and accountant. He had a powerful way of walking into a room full of strangers, and leaving a room full of friends; Shane had yet to meet someone he couldn’t talk to. Shane couldn’t keep a secret, or a grudge, but he kept and maintained friendships for life, provided a level-headed approach to the most difficult tasks in life, and his patience and forgiveness seemed to never run out.

Shane is survived by his wife Meghann; his parents, Kevin and Debbie Sweeney of Lenox; his sisters Courtney (Ryan) Brown of Lenox and Kerry Sweeney of Urbandale; nieces, Kristen and Makayla; and his step grandmother, Isabelle Jenkins of Creston; and In-Laws, John and Peggy Wild, Trevor, Ian and Shea, and grandparents, John and Gert Wild.

Visitation in Des Moines begins after 3 pm Tuesday at Iles Funeral Homes-Dunn’s Chapel where the family will receive friends from 4 to 7pm. Memorial contributions may be made to the family to divide among the many organizations Shane supported.
