Darrell met Marjorie Morris, a rural school teacher in the Lenox area, at the Fall 1941 Iowa State Teachers’ Convention in Des Moines. After falling in love, they eloped and were married on August 23, 1942 at the Methodist Parsonage in Rockport, Missouri.

Evident in every home, church, and business that he worked on, is the great pride that Darrell took in his work.
In November 1947, Darrell and Marjorie had twin daughters, Connie and Kathie. Always having a great sense of humor, Darrell told others he got two for the price of one and had requested that Marjorie have them on the weekend so he would not miss any work.
Darrell was a member of the Lenox United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge, Order of Eastern Star, American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign War.
After retiring, Darrell and Marjorie enjoyed traveling and camping with friends and family. They first purchased a trailer, then a motor home and began spending winters in Arizona, Nevada, California, and everywhere else Darrell said that little trailer would go.
