Holmes, Edythe M. Ledgerwood - Funeral services for Edythe M. Holmes, age 84 of Harrisonville, Missouri formerly of Lenox and Sharpsburg, who died Sunday, August 5, 2007, at the Crown Care Center in Harrisonville, Missouri, will be held Wednesday, August 8, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Bedford, Iowa. Edythe M. Holmes was born August 1, 1923, in Kansas City Missouri, the daughter of Charles and Lecta (Warner) Ledgerwood. She grew up attending school, graduating from Gravity High School. On August 17, 1941, she was united in marriage to Ivan H. Holmes, in Maryville, Missouri; they had 65 wonderful years together. Edythe was a homemaker and was able to stay home and raise her children. She taught piano lessons out of her home in Lenox for several years in the 1940's. Ivan and Edythe lived in Kansas City in the 1950's until the 1970's when they moved back to Lenox. Edythe was active in the Lenox American Legion Auxiliary which she served as president. Ivan and Edythe loved going to the Iowa State Fair every year with the Clearfield Lions helping run the shuttles from the camp grounds to the fair. They also enjoyed attending Ivan's 103rd Army reunion every year. They both attended their school class reunions until the last a couple years.

Edythe played the piano for years at the Sharpsburg United Methodist Church. She was active in many church functions. She loved working in her big garden in Sharpsburg, where she did a lot of canning and baking wonderful pies from the produce of the garden. She loved to bake pies, cakes, candies, cookies etc and always brought her family lots to eat and take home when they visited, especially at the holidays. Edythe kept in touch with family and friends by writing letters and cards, never forgetting a birthday, anniversary or get well message.

Left to cherish Edythe's memory are her two sons, Don Holmes and Judy of Lee's Summit, Missouri; and Ron Holmes of Independence, Missouri; a daughter, Connie Combs and husband Steve of Independence, Missouri; three sisters Beverly Walters of Washington, Illinois; Carol Boyer and husband Dale of Peoria, Illinois; and Joan Clancy of Peoria, Illinois; nine grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren; and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Preceding Edythe in death are her parents; her husband Ivan on April 11, 2007; a brother Charles Ledgerwood; and a sister Virginia Ward.


She was a devoted wife and mother. Her enthusiasm, humor, insight and
gentle kindness will be sorely missed by many.

Hickman, Vadna Charlotte - Graveside services for Vadna Hickman, age 90 of Larkspur, Colorado, formerly of Bedford, who died Monday, June 29, 2009 in Colorado were held Wednesday, July 8, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Fairview Cemetery in Bedford, Iowa. Vadna Charlotte Hickman was born at home on August 21, 1918 to Quincy Madison and Marie Ann (Dorr) Hickman on a homestead dryland farm of 320 acres near Caddao, Colorado; the youngest of three daughters. As a young child, Vadna lived with her parents and sisters, Anna and Ruth, and a young brother, John, who died at the age of two. They were living there when the dust bowl hit and the farm was not prosperous, so in 1924, the family moved to Marie’s mother’s farm south of Bedford. Vadna attended the Ross Center School through eighth grade. During second grade, she met a life-long friend, Maxine Leonard. Vadna graduated in 1936 from Bedford High School. After graduation, Vadna attended Northwest Missouri State Teachers College.

In 1946, she moved to Boulder, Colorado with Anna and her husband Harold Stephens. She worked for JC Penny’s for five years before taking a position with Montgomery Ward as head cashier. Vadna worked for Ward’s for over thirty-five years before she retired at age 66. She lived in Boulder until 2003 when her health began to fail and she moved to live with her niece, Marilyn in Larkspur, Colorado. While living with her niece, she kept in contact with her friend Maxine Leonard (Heide) with weekly phone calls.

Vadna was a very quiet person who enjoyed keeping up with her family and hearing what was happening in each person’s life. All three sisters were very close and kept in touch with frequent letters and phone calls. Vadna also enjoyed traveling to see her family; she and Ruth took a trip to Colorado and California with their Uncle Will and Aunt Bertha Murr, she traveled to Iowa with her sister Anna almost every summer to see their sister Ruth and family. Vadna and her niece Marilyn went to McAllen, Texas for Christmas time family reunion with her sister Ruth, brother-in-law Robert, and their daughters and grandchildren. She especially enjoyed getting to see all of Robert and Ruth’s family at one time which she had never done before. Then again in 2004, she was able to spend Christmas with Ruth and Robert, this time in Bedford where the whole family was gathered. This Christmas gathering became somewhat of a tradition as she traveled with her niece Marilyn to Tulsa, Oklahoma the next three years to celebrate with the family.

Left to cherish Vadna’s memory are her nieces Marilyn of Larkspur, Colorado; Barbara Pollard and husband Dan of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Kathryn Pinner of McAllen, Texas; and Glenda Cieminski and husband John of Huntley, Illinois; six great-nieces and one great-nephew; two great-great-nieces and four great-great-nephews.

Preceding Vadna in her death were her parents Quincy and Marie; an infant brother John Quincy; two nieces, Stana and Betty; her sisters, Anna and Ruth; and brothers-in-law, Harold and Robert.

We will hold the memories of Vadna’s gentle spirit as a wonderful gift.
She will live on in our hearts forever.

Hill, Lauren "Larry" Dee Funeral services for Lauren Hill, age 57 of Lenox, who died Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at the Alegent Health Mercy Hospital will be held Monday, March 24, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Lenox. Lauren (Larry) Dee Hill was born in Iowa City, Iowa, on August 19, 1950, the youngest child of eleven brothers and sisters. His parents were Ernest L. Hill and Virginia (Fielder) Hill. Lauren lived with his mother until the age of four when he moved to the Glenwood State Hospital. He lived there until he was 20, moving to the County Home in Bedford in 1972. Later he moved to Taylor Ridge Estates where he resided at the time of his death.

Lauren always enjoyed receiving mail from Mary Lou England. Ronnie Sleep was his life-long friend and they became roommates and were ‘always watching out for each other’. Eddie Blake, another friend, always made sure Lauren got on and off the trolley without any problems. Lauren enjoyed collecting wrestling magazines, activity markers and other items the staff would find hidden under his mattress. Lauren truly loved his job at Innovative Industries.

Herring, Catherine Keys McGregor Graveside memorial services for Catherine Herring, age 102 of Creston, who died Saturday, June 30, 2007, at the Creston Nursing & Rehab Center will be held Tuesday, July 3, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. at the Graceland Cemetery Chapel in Creston. Catherine Keys was born on October 8, 1904, in Gravity, Iowa, the second daughter of Lawrence Loyal McGregor and Kittie (Keys) McGregor. Catherine grew up living in Gravity with her family until 1916, when they moved to Creston residing at 612 New York Avenue. After graduating from high school, Catherine attended Iowa State College (now University) from 1922 to 1924, majoring in Home Economics. Following her college years, she became a Food Demonstrator for the Pillsbury Company for the Midwestern states.

In 1930, Catherine was united in marriage to Horace “Mac” Alexander McNabb, who was an Engineer with the Wails Dove-Hermiston Corporation. Two children were born to this marriage, Lawrence McGregor McNabb in 1932, and Stanley Alexander McNabb in 1938. Catherine traveled throughout the United States with her husband and children until 1940, when they returned to Creston. The couple made their home at 605 West Prairie Street where Horace / Mac went into the furniture and mortuary business with his father-in-law, Lawrence L. McGregor.

Catherine’s husband, Horace / Mac McNabb, died in 1961, and she later married her long-time friend Francis (Tim) Herring in 1973. The couple shared many years together until his death in 1997.

Always a community minded person, Catherine was a member of the United Methodist Church in Creston for over ninety-one years; and was a member of the Order of Eastern Star for over fifty years. She was also active in Rainbows. Catherine was a good mother, loved life and lived it with a great sense of humor.

Left to cherish Catherine’s memory are her son Stanley McNabb and wife Kathy Staver McNabb of Wasta, South Dakota; four grandchildren, Melody Harner, Brenda Hogan, Debbie McNabb and David McNabb all of Arizona; and five great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren, all of whom live in Arizona.

Preceding Catherine in death were her parents; a sister Helen; her son Larry; one great-great-granddaughter Marissa; and both husbands, Horace McNabb and Francis Herring.

Iva Faye Henning was born December 1, 1928, near Blockton, Iowa the daughter of Inez and Wesley Glenn Wheeler. Her immediate family included brother Orvis Wheeler, sister Gwelda Cooper and twin sister Irma Hill.

Iva grew up in the Blockton area graduating from high school in 1946. She lived for many years in Nebraska and Iowa, raising two children Christine and Timothy Dean. She also worked for several years as a hospital credit manager.

After her children were grown, Iva lived in Washington and Mississippi with her second husband Dick Henning. Following his passing in 1993, Iva returned to Nebraska and moved to The Gifford Towers in Fremont where she lived the rest of her life.

Iva loved to read and enjoyed a wide variety of music. She was self-taught on the computer, allowing her to keep in touch with family and friends. Her constant companion the last few years was her beloved cat, Beau.

Soon after moving to Fremont in 1993, Iva was diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. Despite her increasing breathing difficulties, making simple day-to-day chores a burden, she never let her condition wear her down. She vowed not to let go of her independence and she NEVER did, amazing all who knew her with her will to live and desire to maintain a high quality life.

In recent months, Iva acquired a motorized scooter to enable her to maintain her independence. Her friend, Keith Main, modified the scooter allowing Iva to travel to and from the doctor, grocery store and to shop at nearby malls. Keith and his wife Judi decorated the scooter with decals and racing stripes which delighted Iva, and she would show them off to her many friends.

Despite her increasingly failing health, Iva NEVER complained. Those who knew her well were amazed at her inner strength and dignity. She was described many times as a “classy lady”.

Left to cherish Iva’s memory are her children Christine Binkowski and husband Bruce of San Diego, California; and Timothy Dean and wife Shannon of Bellingham, Washington; granddaughter Shannon Marsh of Copperas Cove, Texas; grandsons Rocky Binkowski of San Diego; and Todd Hunter of Bellingham; great-grandchildren Cortni Troublefield and Anthony Troublefield of Copperas Cove; four nephews David Cooper and wife Delilah; Bob Hill; Todd Hill; Eldon Wheeler; and three nieces Carolyn Brown; Barbara Gaddis and Lynn Hill.

Preceding Iva in death are her parents; brother Orvis Wheeler and sister Gwelda Cooper.

Hawkinson, Clarence Herman Services for Clarence Hawkinson, age 84, of Lenox, who died Tuesday, December 28, 2004 at his daughter’s home in Osceola were held Friday, December 31, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Lenox. Interment of cremated remains, with military rites accorded by the Parkinson American Legion Post No. 250, were held in the North Cemetery in Lenox. Memorials can be given in his name. Clarence Herman Hawkinson was born December 23, 1920, to Oscar and Lula Prichard Hawkinson in Clairmont, Minnesota.

Clarence joined the United States Navy in 1941, even though he could not swim! He earned the title of Boats Mate 2nd Class and went to basic at Great Lakes and was given ship duty shortly afterwards. He spent 3 ½ years in the southwest Pacific. He spent the last few months on duty in the Marshall Islands, and received an honorable discharge in December of 1945. After leaving the Navy, he worked on many farms around the Adel area. He loved working with his hands and being outdoors.

He was united in marriage to Eleanor and was blessed with two children, a son Gary Lee and a daughter Susan Kay. They lived in Adel for many years. After an accident in 1969, Clarence was left blind. He went to the Commission of the Blind in Des Moines, where he met his wife Opal while they were both attending the school. They were united in marriage on June 23, 1974. They were blessed with a daughter, Cindy Marie.

Clarence loved spending the summers traveling by bus with his wife Opal and daughter Cindy. They would visit his daughter Susan, brother Charles and his many grandchildren. He loved going to his grandchildren’s ballgames to cheer them on. He would sit for hours telling stories of when he was younger, also sharing his many farming experiences and his adventures in the Navy. Clarence was always willing to give advice when asked. He never let his disabilities get in the way of enjoying the life God had given him. He loved sitting and listening to westerns, his favorites were all John Wayne movies.

Clarence was preceded in death by his father Oscar, mother Lula, brother Charles, stepdaughter Cheri, and granddaughters Amber and Anita Rumley.

Left to live in his memory are his wife Opal; daughter Cindy and husband Raul and their children Tony and Derek Saucedo; son Gary Hawkinson and wife Velma and his children Theresa, Gary and Ronnie; daughter Susan Dungan and her children Michael, Day, Dawn and Diane; step-son Ronnie Camden and his children Susie, Josh and Jake; son-in-law Garland Miller; step-daughter Alleen Sue and husband Doug and their children Andrew Alborn, Keagon and Darion Armstrong; and thirty-two great-grandchildren.

Family was always very important to him. He loved having the family together whenever possible. He will be missed greatly.

Wilma Erlene (Barker) Hayes was born December 27th 1933 in Lenox, Iowa the daughter of Jesse and Erla Barker. She grew up spending her childhood and adolescence on the Walters farm and graduating high school here in Lenox in 1952. After graduation she worked at the Lenox light plant as a secretary. She had known her husband Richard John Hayes since the age of thirteen and the couple were united in marriage on April 2nd 1954. To this loving union three children were born: Kim (Jeffery), Cathy, and Russell.

After living in Phoenix, AZ for twenty-two years, Wilma and Richard moved back to Lenox to retire and be with family. They built a house right next to her mother Erla Barker and spent three wonderful years together here in Lenox. Wilma, in her recent years, made use of her time spending it with a great collection of friends and family. Wilma would love to travel. She recently went on a trip to Hawaii and a cruise to Alaska. She also went on a riverboat cruise with her great friend Beverly Duncan. Wilma would also travel to see her granddaughter’s (Amanda) collegiate gymnastics meets coast to coast across the country. Family would accompany her along on these trips. Wilma loved country western culture. She would line dance regularly and she went to visit Branson, Missouri where she would enjoy the country western attractions. Wilma would also travel to Ames, Iowa to see her brother Don and his wife Maralyn in their new home

When she was home here in Lenox she would spend her time cooking, sewing, and watching her afternoon soaps. Wilma also loved to cross-stitch. Wilma was an active member in the church and would do activities with the other members. She loved going the Tiger Den to share a cup of coffee with the local friends. She went to many of her high school reunions. Wilma would also attend the Hayes family reunion annually in Osage Beach, Missouri. Wilma loved playing card games (which about every game she was good at) with friends and family.

Left to cherish Wilma’s memory are her children, Kim Jeffery Hayes and his wife Starlene of Eugene, OR; Cathy and husband Jeff of Bremerton, WA; Russell and wife Cristina of Aiken, SC; her brother Don and wife Maralyn of Ames, IA; her sister Beverly Hogue of Lenox, IA; her in-laws Garland Nissen, Ruth Hayes, Lola Wright, Vernon Hayes, Dennis Hayes, Dean Hayes, and Jeanette Williams; her grandchildren Carrie Hayes, Amanda Hall, Mark Hayes, and Amber Hayes; her great-grandchildren and her many nieces and nephews.

Ivan Dellano (Del) Hayworth was born December 15, 1919, in Worth County, Missouri the son of Alph Hayworth and Mina (Winemiller) Hayworth. He grew up in Worth County until about the age of 10 years when his family moved to a farm south of Bedford. The family later moved to the Conway area where Ivan graduated from the Conway High School with the Class of 1940. Ivan was united in marriage to Amy Jeannette Norton in 1940. To this union eleven children were born. In May of 1985 Jeannette passed away after 45 years together.

Ivan served in the United States Navy during World War II on the USS Casinghead. He was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Ivan had two major loves in his life . . . . his family and sports. He played sports throughout his school years, and in later years, participated in what was known as “Kitten Ball” on town teams until he was in his forties. Ivan traveled hundreds of miles to attend games that his children and grandchildren participated in. One of his yearly enjoyments was to attend the Big Eight Tournament in Kansas City with his sons, grandsons, brother and nephews. Ivan often bragged to others that he had the “best kids in the world”.

Ivan worked many years in road construction and farming. He enjoyed buying livestock and was found at various sale barns on Sale Day. He enjoyed having his grandchildren ‘help with the chores’ and showing his animals to them.

Left to cherish Ivan’s memory are his ten children, Martha Morgan of Radcliff, Iowa; Carole Norris of Ames, Iowa; Paul Hayworth and wife Kay of Olathe, Kansas; Mary Olson of Bondurant, Iowa; Terry Hayworth and wife Cindy of Mitchellville, Iowa; Ellen Landers and husband Kerry of Carlisle, Iowa; Dennis Hayworth and wife Jackie of Grimes, Iowa; Douglas Hayworth and wife June of Weatherby Lake, Missouri; Tim Hayworth of Brooksville, Florida; James Hayworth and wife Cathy of Bondurant, Iowa; twenty-four grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; three sisters, Crystal Gourley of Bedford, Iowa; Beckie Morehouse of Sarasota, Florida; and Anita Hayworth of Mount Ayr, Iowa; along with numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Preceding Ivan in death is his father Alph Hayworth in 1946; his mother Mina Hayworth in 1974; his wife Jeannette in 1985; a daughter, Karon, at infancy; four brothers, Edwin, Benjamin, Quentin and Kyle Hayworth; one sister, Elsie Thompson; and two infant sisters.

Ivan will be missed by his entire family.

Harris, Kathryn "Katie" Lorraine Gerdes Memorial services for Kathryn “Katie” Harris, age 76 of Topeka, Kansas, formerly of Bedford who passed away peacefully on Friday, August 18, 2006 at the Lexington Park Nursing Home Facility in Topeka, Kansas were held Sunday, August 20, 2006 at 3:30 p.m. at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Bedford. Interment of ashes was held in the Fairview Cemetery in Bedford.

Kathryn “Katie” Lorraine Harris was born on November 9, 1929, in Spencer Nebraska, the daughter of a principal and optometrist, Ben and Hazel Jackson Gerdes. She was a 1947 graduate of Hawarden High School. She attended college at UNI in Cedar Falls, Iowa, where she earned her BA in Education. She continued her education at Southern College of Optometry in Memphis Tennessee, where in 1951 she earned her doctorate in Optometry. It was there that Kathryn met her future husband, William Houston Harris, Jr. They were married October 21, 1950. After graduation Will and Katie Harris moved to Bedford IA to open their own optometry practice and begin their family. While in Bedford, she ran the Lake of Three Fires. After retiring, Kathryn moved to Topeka Kansas. She became a paraprofessional at Quincy Elementary School where she tutored children with learning disabilities.

Kathryn had many passions, such as gardening, antiquing & quilting. She was a blood drive organizer and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Kathryn was preceded in death by her husband, William Harris, her son, Daniel Harris, her parents, Ben & Hazel Gerdes and her brother Garry Gerdes.

She is survived by her children, Dennis Harris, Topeka, Valery Norton, Las Vegas Nevada; Dean Harris, Holly Springs North Carolina; ten grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; her sister, Elinda “Linde” Ross; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Seth C. Thompson, 14, Lenox, Dies

          Seth Cale Thompson, 14, of Lenox died of natural causes Aug. 19, 2002, at his home one mile north of Lenox.

          Services were Saturday, Aug. 24 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Lenox. The Rev. Dan Siepker and the Rev. David Fleming officiated.  Burial was in the North Fairview Cemetery at Lenox.  Memorials may be directed to the family with a memorial established in his name at a later date.

          Mr. Thompson, son of Gary Rodger Thompson and Lynne Marie (Votava) Thompson, was born Sept. 18, 1987, in Creston.  He would have been a freshman at Lenox High School.  He lived most of his life in Lenox except for one year in Creston.  He was baptized at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Lenox and took confirmation classes at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Creston.  He played football and basketball.

          Survivors include his parents, Gary (wife Julia Weckham) Thompson of Creston and Lynne Thompson (special friend Jodie Maben) of Lenox; a brother, Evan James Thompson of Lenox; two step-sisters Shawna and Casie Miller, both of Creston; grandparents, Jim and Ann Votava of Clearfield and Vernal and Joan Thompson of Lenox, and great-grandmother Pearl Thompson of Lenox.

He was preceded in death by his great-grandfather, George Thompson.

Funeral services for Seth Cale Thompson, age 14, of Lenox were held Saturday, August 24, at St Patrick's Catholic Church in Lenox with Father Dan Siepker and Father David Fleming officiating. Burial was in North Fairview Cemetery in Lenox.
Coen-Beaty-Pearson Family Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
Memorials can go to the family and they will establish a memorial in his name at a later date.
Seth was born on Sept. 18, 1987, in Creston to Gary R. Thompson and Lynne Marie Votava Thompson. He passed away on August 19, 2002, at his residence north of Lenox. His unexpected death came from natural causes and was an emotional loss for his family, friends and classmates.
Survivors include his parents, Gary (wife Julia Wickham) of Creston and Lynne Thompson (special friend Jodie Maben) of Lenox;grandparents Jim and Ann Votava of Clearfield and Vernal and Joan Thompson of Lenox; great-grandmother Pearl Thompson of Lenox brother Evan J. Thompson of Lenox; step sisters Shawna Miller and Casie Miller, both of Creston; and aunts, uncles and cousins.
Seth lived in Lenox most of his life except one year in Creston.
He was baptized at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lenox and took confirmation classes at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Creston. He was active in sports. He loved science as a study as well as all outdoor activities such as fishing and hunting. He attended Lenox Community School District and would have been
in ninth grade this year.
He was preceded in death by a great-grandfather, George Thompson.
