[109]Clark, Ruth Hanshaw - Funeral Services for Ruth Clark, age 81 of Bedford who
died Sunday, November 19, 2006 at the Clarinda Regional
Health Center were held Friday, November 24, 2006 at
10:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Bedford.
Interment was held in the Fairview Cemetery in Bedford.
Memorials can be directed to the First Baptist Church, the
Taylor County Museum or the Bedford Library Elevator
Fund. Memories can be shared with the family on our web
site at www.ritchiefuneralhome.com under Obituaries.
Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home
of Bedford.

Naomi Ruth Hanshaw Clark was born in Bedford, Iowa on
June 7, 1925, the daughter of Catherine Rebecca Walker
Hanshaw and Carr Clifton Hanshaw. She died in Clarinda,
Iowa on November 19, 2006.

Her family lived on West Main Street from where she
walked to school in Bedford, and graduated from high
school there in 1943. Her school days were during the
Depression of the `30s and the World War II years of the
`40s. Her class had no yearbook because of the paper
shortage, no class trip due to fuel and tire shortages, and
Bedford's first black-out, part of an air raid drill, occurred
during their commencement. In high school Ruth, who was
a life-long pianist, was also active in glee club, band and
orchestra. In 1944 she was the Taylor County War Bond
Queen, for which the prize was a lavish week-end trip to
Des Moines with other County Queens. During those war
years a trip to Des Moines was an unusual treat.

On March 6, 1945 Ruth was married to Howard Reed Clark
(Shorty) in Wathena, Kansas. Three children were born to
the couple: Cathy Lou, November 27, 1948; Brent D.,
November 1, 1951; Patricia Lynn, June 14, 1954. Shorty
died suddenly on December 22, 1983.

After high school Ruth worked at Lucille Livingston's
Coffee Shop, the Ben Franklin Store, Rexall Drug where
she stirred up great chocolate sodas, the OPA (Office of
Price Administration designed to control wartime
inflation), and in the office of Cudahy's. Later she was
Shorty's secretary at Farmer's Mutual Insurance and the
bookkeeper at Clark Lumber Company. After Shorty's
untimely death she rose to the occasion and became the
sole proprietor of the Lumber Company for nearly eleven
years. There were only two years of Ruth's life that she did
not live in Bedford. This is when she and Shorty owned and
operated the Country Boys Lumber Yard in Grant City,
before returning to Bedford and establishing Clark Lumber
Company.

Ruth was an enthusiastic promoter and worker in the
Bedford Community; a long-time member of the Rebekah
Lodge, Lioness, and the Chamber of Commerce. After
retirement she volunteered as a guide at the Taylor County
Museum. She sold tickets at the gate of the Taylor County
Fair for many years.

The Bedford Baptist Church was always her church home;
she attended services there from the time she was a child.
Ruth asked Jesus to be her Savior at the age of twelve,
becoming a member of the church almost 70 years ago.
When she was in high school she began playing the piano
at church, which she continued throughout her life. When
the organ became a part of the church's music she became
a self-taught organist as well. She was very proud that six
generations of her family, beginning with her grandparents,
attended the Bedford Baptist Church regularly.

Ruth's faith carried her through many difficult times. A
clinging cross, given to her by a dear friend, brought her
much comfort during her final illness. It was always in her
hand for every doctor's appointment and treatment as a
reminder of God's love and care.

Ruth was a grandmother extraordinaire. She had a
remarkable sense of how she could be of help and
encouragement to her eight grandchildren, their spouses
and her twelve great grandchildren. She sent cards, made
phone calls, sent little packages, was readily available for
visits, ran errands, helped baby-sit, and always claimed her
grandmother's rights for holding and cuddling a new baby.
Every child should have a grandmother as loving as Ruth.

In addition to her joy of being with her immediate family,
she treasured visits from her two nieces who live away,
Judy and Merle Engleka, and Kaye and Len Ware. She
was grateful that Carole (a special cousin) and Vic Noer
lived close-by, which made possible many happy times
together.

Ruth is survived by two daughters and a son: Cathy and
Don Cochran, Spring Hill, KS; Brent and Debbie Clark,
Glenwood, IA; Patricia and David Dukes, Bedford, IA.,
and grandchildren: Brandi and Kevin Chambers, Tera and
Matt Schlotfelt, Alison Clark and Dan Porter, James Clark,
Megan Clark, Elaina and James Johnson, Troy and Erin
Dukes, Katy and Dustin Longfellow. Great grandchildren
are Katelynn, Taylor and Sarah Chambers; Banner
Schlotfelt; Preston and Logen Clark; Zachary, Alexander
and Bradley Johnson; Mason and Quinton Dukes; and
Ruthie Grace Longfellow.

She also is survived by three sisters-in-law; Ethel Hanshaw,
Maxine Wallace and Phyllis Clark, and brother-in-law,
Dean Clark and wife Sally. She also leaves many nieces,
nephews and friends who will miss her generous, loving
and caring ways.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband,
Howard Reed Clark; brothers, Forrest Hanshaw and Clif
Hanshaw; sisters-in-law, Marjorie Hanshaw and Kay
Hanshaw; and nephews, Jim Hanshaw and Paul Hanshaw .

May God grant comfort and strength to those who mourn
Ruth's passing.

The family moved back to the Guss, Iowa area when he was small and his primary education was received at the Weston School-Nodaway #6 Taylor Co. He attended high school at Corning, IA, graduating with the class of '46. He joined the Methodist Church at Guss and was a member until 1952 when he moved his membership elsewhere.
His summers were spent working for area farmers in the summers and at Mt. Arbor Nurseries in the winters and later he and his older brother Dean would follow the wheat harvest from Texas to Montana sightseeing as they went. In September 1950, he along with 4 others were in the 1st draft call from Taylor County for the Korean conflict. After basic training he along with others were waiting for the train to take them out when his name was pulled from the list and the remainder of his time was spent in a ceremonies and guard unit at Fort Meyer, VA.
On July 21, 1951 he was married at Clarinda, Iowa to Norma Jean Warner, daughter of Mark and Leola Spear Warner.
After returning from service, he worked for Walter Eitzen and he farmed for himself for awhile. He then moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa where he worked for the Omaha Transit Systems where he drove a city bus.
He then worked for the Wonder Bread Company as a route salesman. He moved to Jefferson City, MO in 1961 where he continued in sales work, then going into business as an independent contractor. His business car read "Let George Do It" - and he often said "I can make a good living doing what nobody else wants to do". He was known for his abilities with wood and musical talents-harp and ge-tar (as he called it) and liked to yodel.
He owned and operated Clems Home Services for over 30 years and was then employed by Scholastic books for several years prior to his retirement on May 31, 2004.

He never outgrew his love for John Deere tractors, often saying he would like one sitting in the back yard so he could crank it up and listen to it pop.
[111]Cline, Jarrod
Funeral Services for Jarrod Cline, age 9 of Prescott, were held
Wednesday, July 13, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. at the Prescott  Elementary
Gymnasium in Prescott.  Interment was held in the Evergreen Cemetery
in Prescott.  In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be given in
Jarrod’s name for a memorial fund to be established. Please leave a
message of tribute to the Cline family on our web page,
www.ritchiefunralhome.com under Obituaries. Arrangements were
entrusted to the Roland-Ritchie Funeral Home of Corning.

Jarrod Dean Cline was born November 26, 1995, in Omaha, Nebraska
the son of Mike and Marnie (Wilson) Cline.  He lost his courageous
battle with brain cancer on Saturday, July 9, 2005, at his home in rural
Prescott.  He would have been a fourth grader at the Prescott Elementary
School next month.  Jarrod was active in baseball, soccer and basketball
in the Corning and Prescott Athletic Clubs.  He was also a Discovery
Member of the Prescott 4-H Worker’s Club and a member of the
Disciples of Christ Church in Prescott where he enjoyed serving as a
candle lighter.

Jarrod was an active young man, mature beyond his years.  He was an
outdoorsman, who looked forward to hunting all kinds of wild game.
His serious demeanor and competitive nature was evident in everything
he did.  When it was turkey season, he would dress in his camouflage, set
up the decoys in the yard by the tree, and practice ‘being still and calling
in the turkeys’.  Jarrod was a gifted athlete who enjoyed all sports, but
probably baseball was his favorite, not only because he could bat right or
left handed by age three, but also on the advice of his dad, that baseball
would make him the most money, and we all know how he liked to hoard
money!  To Jarrod, anything worth doing, meant giving 100%, it meant
not being intimidated even if the competition was a lot bigger.  A point
Jarrod illustrated on a family vacation to Daytona where he beat all of
the college boys in a racing simulation game.  He enjoyed NASCAR and
watching Jeff Gordon, and would attend the races in Corning whenever
he could.  Even though he has left us at a young age, Jarrod taught us
many things through his actions and determination, and we are all better
because of it.

Left to cherish Jarrod’s memory are his parents Michael and Marnie, a
younger sister Morgan Elizabeth and younger brother Tristan Leland
Tyler, all of rural Prescott; paternal grandparents, Reldon and Jean Cline
of Corning; maternal grandparents, C. Wayne and Cheryl Wilson of
Lenox; great-grandparents Leland and Margie Wilson of Creston; and
Shirley Leib of Greenfield; aunt Marcy (Cline) and uncle Tyler Edwards
of Corning; aunt Deborah (Wilson) and uncle Eric Casebolt of Iowa City,
Iowa; aunt Michelle (Wages) and uncle Terry Brown of Cheshire,
Connecticut; aunt Stacie (Eshelman) and uncle Todd Hull of Prescott; and
uncle Mark and aunt Ragan Eshelman of Ankeny; six cousins and many
other relatives and very close friends.

Jarrod is preceded in death by his maternal grandmother Mary Elizabeth
(Smith) Wilson.

May God grant comfort and strength to those who mourn Jarrod’s
passing.

[113]Combs, Gladys Irene Dalrymple, was born Aug 5, 1919 at her grandparent Oxley's home just east of Siam in Taylor County, Ia. Her parents were Jefferson Ezra "Tom" Dalrymple and Adah Alfreda Oxley. Gladys lived at Maryville, Missouri until her parents divorced in 1925 at which time she, with her mother and sister, Lenora, returned to live at the Oxley home east of Siam. In 1949 her father moved back near them and many hours were spent in each other's homes.
Gladys attended the Siam schools through eighth grade and the Christian Church at Siam during her youth. She studied violin and piano under Lola Reid. During the 1960's she studied organ at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Mo.
She was married to Neil Combs at Shenandoah, Ia, Dec 12, 1940. They settled on a farm east and north of Siam where they lived until 1946 when they moved to a farm they bought, located southeast of Gravity. Gladys always helped with the farming, kept about 1200 chickens per year, sold eggs to Safeway in Kansas City, and had large vegetable and fruit gardens.
She was never known as one to rearrange furniture much, but as a hobby-carpenter she often rearranged the interior of the house. If she announced at breakfast that she was putting a window in a wall, by suppertime there was a window in the wall. She loved yard work and spent many hours on her John Deere riding lawn mower.
During the 1950's she was very active as President of the Gravity School PTA and undertook many projects. In 1969 Neil and Gladys moved north of the water tower in Gravity. For a number of years she was city clerk and looked after the water plant. She also taught piano and organ to many students.
She especially enjoyed having her family come to her house for birthday and holiday dinners and Gladys and Neil made many trips to Fairfax to join in family celebrations there. She was a good cook and always welcomed those who just happened to arrive at her home at meal time, as well as all of those that she invited. Her specialty was the traditional ravioli dinner that we always ate at Thanksgiving and Christmas times. She enjoyed her "tea time" with many of the neighbors. She'd call many people every day and enjoyed telling them what she had to say, and then would tell them she was done now and hang up, or just hang up because she was done.
Gladys survived a massive stroke in 1996 and that person who was always outside doing something accepted being in a wheelchair remarkably well. Neil died in 1998 and since that time she has lived with her daughter Lorelei and her husband Stephen Rusco in Gravity. She especially liked to watch Lorelei sew or work on various projects. She was generally in the midst of whatever was going on and greatly enjoyed watching the great-grandkids grow up - and if she thought the kids' music was too loud, she just turned her TV louder. She would allow them to change the channel or watch a movie, but if they all left the room, she wanted her remote.
She is survived by three children, Harry Combs and wife Mary of Fairfax, Mo, Patricia O'Dell and husband Keith of New Market, Ia, and Lorelei Rusco and husband Stephen of Gravity, Ia.
Grandchildren include: Holly Combs Barnes and husband Tracy of Fairfax, Mo, Jason Combs and wife Gayle of Jonesboro, Ark, Mike Lewis of Fairfax, Mo, Beth Lewis Graves and husband Jon of Fairfax, Mo, Brent O'Dell of Council Bluffs, Ia, Nishi O'Dell Giefer and husband Bernard of WaKeeney, Ks, Jeremy Wheeler and wife Linda of Gravity, Ia, Jake Hill and wife Trisha of Bedford, Ia and Josh Rusco of Gravity, Ia.
Great-grandchildren are: Spencer, Jase, and Goldie Barnes of Fairfax, Mo, Dustin Barnes of Hannibal, Mo, Kelly Barnes of Omaha, Ne, Tate and Oliver Combs of Jonesboro, Ark, Amber and Baylee Lewis and Jaycee and Jessie Graves of Fairfax, Mo, B.J. and Paula O'Dell of Belle Plaine, Ia, Bernard, Helen, Sybil and Wyndom Giefer of WaKeeney, Ks, Tiana, Kelsey, Audrey and Devon Wheeler of Gravity, Ia, Brett and Ben Hill of Bedford, Ia, Trey Hill of Bedford, Ia, and Alissa Rose Rusco of Creston. Ia.
Gladys was preceded in death by her husband Neil, daughter-in-law Judy Osburn Combs, and grandsons Brad O'Dell and Benjamin Beemer. She died at the home of Lorelei and Stephen Rusco on December 14, 2004. Burial was in the Washington Cemetery at Gravity, Ia.
Funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m., Saturday, December 18, 2004, at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa with Loren Daly officiating. [114]Cook, Leah Jean Canney - Funeral services for Leah Cook, age 64, of Lenox who died Thursday
June 2, 2005 at her home were held Wednesday, June 8, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. at the Stringtown Church. Private family interment will be held at a later date. Memorials can be given in Leah's name. Please leave a
message of tribute to the cook family on our web page, www.ritchiefunralhome.com under obituaries. Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Lenox.

Leah Jean (Canney) Cook was born August 12, 1940 to Donald and Corda (Carson) Canney, in Osceola, Iowa and died June 2, 2005, at home in Lenox, Iowa.

Leah attended country school in Clarke County through the 8th grade and graduated high school in Osceola. She worked a short time for the telephone company. Being a real country girl at heart she did not enjoy this, and decided to stay at home, and helped her mom and dad on the farm until meeting Roy Cook.

At this meeting a great love developed. They were united in marriage December 31, 1961 at Bethel Chapel Church in Clarke County. To this union 5 children were born: Jeffery of Ankeny; Lynne Hites and husband
Andy of Pleasant Hill; Corey of Altoona; James of Corning; Allen of Red Oak; and many other children that called Leah Mom. She had 5 adopted children, 4 grandchildren; Brandon and Lindsey Cook, Meagan
and Ashley Hites.

Leah and Roy for several years worked with the foster children program. They had somewhere around 30 children that passed through their home that called Leah Mom and still do today. Many told her she was the only mom that they had ever known. She loved working with and teasing people for good fun. Her love was not things but people, thinking of others before herself. She lived her life by the golden rule; she taught this value to her children with love and forgiveness, while touching an even greater number.

Leah always tried to serve the Lord in whatever way that she could. She enjoyed people, her family, rodeos, flowers, and animals.

In the 1980's she and Roy moved to Des Moines to be in the Active Ministry. While there they served as Co-Pastors of different churches and volunteered to help others. They spent a year in Southern Missouri,
working for Lord and had hoped some day to return there to retire.

In 1993 they moved to Lenox to pastor at Stringtown Community Church and enjoyed this challenge. During this time they and Peggy Brown made three missionary trips to Southeast Kentucky, which Leah
had enjoyed beyond words, and the people that she met there. She had hoped to go again.

Leah enjoyed traveling, sewing and her church work. She couldn't understand why people didn't enjoy being in God's House and doing his work.

Leah is at home with the Lord today and you can bet she is putting in a good word for each of you.

Preceding Leah in death are her grandparents and parents. May God grant comfort and strengthen to those who mourn Leah's passing.
