He was the son of Stanley and Edna (Harms) Carlson. Dean lived a short time in Red Oak before moving to a farm in Page County, Iowa. At the age of 18, he went on an adventure to travel the coast of California. He then moved back to New Market, Iowa after 10 years in California where he lived the remainder of his life. During his life he worked various jobs in California, which his quote was, “he was a jack of all trades” when he drove a semi, meat packing assembler, and machine shop mechanic. When he was in California, he became fluent in the Spanish language. When returning to Iowa, he became the manager of John Deere, worked for several construction companies, before becoming self employed owning his own empire of Carlson Farms and Construction where he bulldozed, moved buildings and farmed the rest of his life.

Dean D Carlson married Deana Kay Walker on August 2, 1988 in Las Vegas, Nevada and to this union came four children. Dean D Carlson’s true love was his family. When after a long day at work he would give every spare moment to his family and friends. He loved going to auctions, fish, hunt, gamble, Texas, travel and loved the outdoors with his farms. He loved to ride motorcycles, four-wheelers, drive boats and ski. Dean made family vacations a necessity once a year. His favorite vacation spot was Texas in the winter months but come spring his heart always brought him back to his children and farming in Iowa. Many people knew him as Dean the talker but every conversation always had a hidden bit of pass down knowledge and of course humor in it. He may have appeared rough around the edges and strong but he was the kindest hearted man and a fighter all the way,

Derry, Dean - Dean Derry, age 82, of Clarinda, Iowa, entered into peace Thursday, April 16,, 2015 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, Red Oak, Iowa. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m., Monday, April 20, 2015 at Ritchie Funeral Home with Arlan Hoskins officiating. Burial will be in the Memory Cemetery.

Billy Dean Derry was born at home in Monroe County, near Eddyville, Iowa on April 19, 1932 to Marshall Alvin and Florence Naomi (Hoskins) Derry. At an early age, his family moved to Taylor County in Iowa. Schooling started at the Titus school four miles west of Bedford. Then in 1941 when he was in the second grade, the family moved east of New Market. The remainder of his grade school years was attending the Frog Valley country school.

After graduation with the New Market class of 1951, Dean spent one year farming with his father. In September of 1952 Uncle Sam called him to serve in the army. After basic training his battalion was sent overseas to Baumholder, Germany in late October of 1953 where he was in the 265th heavy field artillery battalion. He was discharged from the army in September of 1954. He then joined the National Guard. He was discharge from the Guard in June of 1965.

Before going to Germany, On October 1, 1953 he married his high school sweetheart, Helen Glassgow. Upon returning home he once again went into farming for several years with his father, but realized that “he would never make a good farmer”. He purchased an old crawler dozer and started doing farm conservation work in 1964. His son Delmar learned very easily and began to operate the tractor at an early age. After Delmar’s graduation from High School in 1976 Derry Construction, Inc. was formed. The business grew over the many years of serving the area farmers and their conservation needs. Two grandsons also helped with the business when not in school and Helen was the secretary.

With the many pieces of construction equipment owned one might say the he liked “iron” and the challenges it brought. The purpose was to conserve our environment and to control the erosion of our valuable soil. The corporation was sold to Delmar in 2005. Dean was able to do almost anything that involved mechanics, electrical, farming and a machine operator. He even helped with the garden.

On the farm near New Market they built a new home in 1981 and were very proud of it as it was their own design. After selling the farm they built a new home west of Clarinda and moved in on July 16, 2010.

Some of Dean’s famous quotes were:
“I keep trying, but I just can’t get all those ducks in a row.”
“I only want to be late once in my life and that is to my funeral”.
“She’s my high school sweetheart.”
Their travels in the last few years included a Caribbean cruise, tours to Hawaii, New Zealand, Australia, Alaska, the New England States, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia. They also joined tour groups to visit England, Panama Canal, Old Mexico and Ireland.

Dean and Helen had three children. Daughters include, Florence Naomi Tompkins and Alice Ann Ades and one son, Delmar Dean Derry. There are eight grandchildren and several great grandchildren.

There is so much to be thankful for. Dean felt that God had been very good to him and his wishes for you was good health and happiness throughout life.

Grimes, Robert Wayne "Bob" - Celebration of Life Funeral Services for Bob Grimes, age 87, who passed away Sunday, May 24, 2015 at the Corning Hospital were held Thursday, May 28, 2015 at 10:30 AM at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Bedford. Visitation were one hour prior to services. Interment with military rites were held at the Fairview Cemetery in Bedford. Memorials may be directed to HCI Hospice. Memories may be shared at www.ritchiefuneralhome.com. Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Bedford.
Robert Wayne Grimes was born May 11, 1928, to Forest Andrew Grimes and Kathleen Fern Grimes. He grew up in Hopkins, Missouri, attended school there and graduated from Hopkins High School in 1945. Bob was always a clever child who caught onto things quickly and didn’t miss much of anything that was going on. He loved listening to and telling jokes and his wittiness was much appreciated by his classmates and others.
In his early days, Bob had an awful habit of sucking his thumb. His parents tried numerous times to correct this, but they were not successful. Finally, Forest and Fern told him that thumb-sucking would not be tolerated in school and that he had to stop or else he couldn’t attend. When Bob came home after his first day, he was asked, “Did you suck your thumb at school today?” Bob’s matter of fact answer was, “No, but I gave it hell all the way home.”
After high school Bob worked at several jobs, including building construction, high power line construction and auto mechanics. In 1951 he entered the service and completed basic training at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Later he was assigned to a tank battalion as a trainer of recruits and he served in this capacity until his discharge in 1953.
Returning to Hopkins, Bob worked for Sears and Ladd Motors in Maryville as a salesman. Then in 1955 he came to Bedford and entered into a partnership with S.K. Mendenhall in Taylor County Motors (where he was also a salesman). Hmm, seems to be a pattern to this. Bob = salesman, salesman = Bob. He was a natural!
He had the ability to talk to anyone and usually managed to make a sale in the process.
Two especially important events took place in the next two years: his marriage to Roberta Benson in 1956 and their opening of The Davis Paint Store in 1957. They were both a success! The marriage partnership lasted 56 years until Roberta’s death in 2013, and their store was in business for 38 years until Bob’s retirement in 1995. Bob was not afraid to work or to work late. If a sale required delivery of a TV at 10:00 P.M. and set-up would add another hour, it wasn’t a problem; it was just part of the sale.
In marrying Roberta, Bob received an instant bonus of a ready-made family. Part of the bonus was Roberta’s son, Mike. Bob was the only father Mike remembers, and he was a very good father. He was strict and a rule-enforcer when needed, but he was also loving, and a dad who would do anything for Mike. Later this love and generosity were shared with Mike’s family of Susan and Elizabeth. Did I mention Elizabeth? That topic was a favorite! In his last hours when it looked like death was a sure thing, listening to Elizabeth’s voice on the phone brought a smile to his face as he tried to communicate his love even though he could hardly speak.
And so … Bob’s life was a full one. He loved life and all its challenges and perks. He was a veteran and a 50 year + member of the American Legion, a 50 year + member of the Masonic Lodge in Hopkins, a Moila Shriner in St. Joe, a member of the Elks Club in Maryville, an original member of the Investment Club in Bedford, a member of the Chamber of Commerce, a bowler and a fisherman, a Santa Claus at Christmastime. He was a giver of advice (especially to the younger members of his family) and a good businessman. The list continues… But most importantly, Bob was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be very missed by all who knew and loved him.

Walkup, John David - John David Walkup, son of Annabel (Haidsiak) and Harold John Walkup, was born March 4, 1957 in the Ringgold County Hospital in Mount Ayr, Iowa. Two older brothers, Mike (6) and Dale (4) welcomed and loved him.
John David received his formal education in Mount Ayr Community Schools. He graduated from Mount Ayr in 1975. Because he was hospitalized, he was unable to attend his 40th class reunion. Reunion attendees thoughtfully signed a card and many included encouraging notes.
John David had farming in his blood. He and his Dad became partners in the farming operation. He was especially adept in raising and judging cattle. Livestock auctioneers from Clarinda to Lamoni and from Maryville to Creston soon recognized and respected his opinion and judgement. He also liked going to other auctions; often buying and reselling. He soon became known on a first name basis answering to John or J.D. John David did custom farm work especially in grinding stumps. Often when he presented his charge, the incredulous response was, "Are you sure this is right and enough?" He often contributed his work in various towns, churches, or individuals. Once requesting the check to be made to a local cancer victims benefit.
John David enjoyed hunting (an expert marksman), fishing (he generally caught his share or more), and looking for and finding mushrooms. He never divulged his secret places. Hearing of his success, his Uncle Frank came to go fishing with him. Upon returning empty handed, his uncle dryly remarked, "I think I was taken to every dry pond and river".
John David was an avid puzzle solver, particularly crossword puzzles. He was a card shark and he liked his dogs.
John David was a charter member of the Sons of American Legion, Ringgold Squadron #172, in Mount Ayr. Over the years, he has held an office nearly every year from Commander to finance. He never missed a meeting if he could help it. In fact, he attended the last meeting on July 7. He was always on the courthouse lawn during Ayr Days, serving up loin sandwiches.
John David was diagnosed in December 2014 with lung cancer. At this time, he came under the care and auspicious of Dr. Shreck. Four chemo treatments cured the lung tumor but another worse demon attacked his bones. More chemo and radiation but severe excruciating pain was wrecking his body and he entered the Ringgold County Hospital on July 10. The pain was brought under control and he passed away peacefully there on July 16 with his family by his bedside.
John David was baptized at an early age and became a lifetime member of the Methodist Church; he believed.
John David was preceded in death by his father; nephew Justin Andrew Walkup; grandparents Glenn & Gladys Walkup and John & Anna Haidsiak.

John David made no pretense as to whom or what he was. He only asked the same in return: acceptance.
Don't walk in from of me-
I may not follow.
Don't walk behind me-
I may not lead.
Walk beside me-
And just be my friend.

Walters, Richard Leland "Dick" - Celebration of Life Funeral Services for Dick Walter, age 86, of Lenox, who went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 14, 2015 at his home in Lenox will be held Saturday, July 18, 2015 at 10:30 AM at the Lenox Christian Church. Visitation will be held at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Lenox on Friday, July 17, 2015 from 3 to 5 PM with the family greeting friends from 5 to 7 PM. Interment will be held at West Fairview Cemetery in Lenox.

Richard Leland ("Dick") Walter, the son of Orval and Dorothy (Wynn) Walter was born in Lenox, Iowa on November 3, 1928. Dick attended 1st through 12th grades at the Lenox Public School. He was raised and baptized in the Lenox Christian Church where he gave his heart to the Lord.

During his childhood, Dick developed a love for reading, music, sports and farming. He became an avid reader inheriting this gift from his Grandmother Belle Walter. Throughout his lifetime, he spent many hours reading history books, or an encyclopedia, and studying the Bible. As a young boy, he rode his bike to deliver the Des Moines Evening Tribune and Sunday paper and worked at his Dad's Conoco Station. He also worked on h is Dad's farm and other farms in the area, helping in the hay fields, stripping blue grass, walking the bean fields, detasseling corn, or whatever he could do. That was where he developed his love of farming. Dick was active in all sports during his High School years. He was also active in music activities, in band, vocal, on the piano and the school plays.

After Dick graduated from Lenox High School in 1946, he earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in 1950 from Iowa State University, with a major in Agriculture Economics and minors in Agronomy, History and Government. While attending ISU, he was awarded for his work on "The Iowa Agriculturist" and was also selected to be a member of the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Music Fraternity, chosen for outstanding work in music and leadership.

Dick married his high school sweetheart, Mildred Marie Brown from Corning on August 13, 1950. They began their new life together in DeWitt, Iowa where Dick worked as an Underwriter for Iowa Mutual Insurance Company. He was promoted to Head Farm Underwriter and was responsible for all of the insurance underwritten in 6 Midwest states, with supervision of 4 underwriters.

Dick always wanted to farm, so they made the decision to move back to the Walter Family farm in 1953. He was a proud 'steward of the land' when it came to preserving the family farm, working countless hours from sunrise into the wee hours of the night. During this time, he was asked to set up and run a Soil Testing Lab for Lenox Fertilizer Corporation. In 1960, they moved to the Roy Long farm, adding acres to their farm production. Dick was nominated Outstanding Young Farmer in Taylor County in 1961. He served on the Taylor county ASC for six years, and Adams County ASC for four years. Dick was chairman of the Taylor County Extension Council that directed the Cooperative Extension Program for Taylor County. He also served on the Iowa State University Advisory Council in Ames for four years. Dick was in charge of handling the weight scales for both Lenox and Leon Livestock Auctions, and was an order buyer of stock cattle for several southern Iowa auctions and cattle feeders.

In 1975, Dick and Mildred sold their farm and Dick was hired as an Ag Loan Officer with First National Bank in Lenox, later becoming Vice President. In 1985, he accepted a position with the Community Bank of Wickenburg, Arizona where he served as Vice President.

After retiring in 1992, Dick and Mildred moved to Dover, Arkansas where they lived in a scenic countryside, surrounded by beautiful mountains and on the edge of the Ozark National Forest. Dick was happy spending the next nineteen years in a country setting. He spent hours planting gardens and beautiful flower beds, pruning fruit trees, chopping firewood, and mowing their acreage. Dick also enjoyed helping all of his family with their various home remodeling projects. In 2011, Dick and Mildred made their final move back to Lenox where they had first begun their life together.

In life and in death, Dick was a man of great determination with quiet strength, practical love, and a peaceful heart. He was a man devoted to the Lord. He was an active member of the Lenox Christian Church where he served as a Deacon, Elder, and Treasurer. He also taught Sunday School Classes, led Bible Study Classes, and gave messages in both the Lenox and the Corning Christian Churches. In Wickenburg, Arizona, he served as an elder in the First Presbyterian Church. After moving to Arkansas, Dick was an active member of the Dover First Baptist Church. No matter where his faith journey took him, it was important for him to worship and serve his Lord and Savior.

Dick and Mildred were blessed with three daughters and three sons. Dick had an unconditional love for his family and tried to be an example to them of how necessary it is to become educated or trained in a field of their choice, and to always work hard to achieve this goal. His love and devotion for his children extended on down to each grandchild and great-grandchild who all brought him much enjoyment. When each one became old enough to climb, they would crawl up onto his lap and play with the pen that was always in his pocket. He knew that "home" is the place where character is built and where sacrifice contributes to the foundation of strength. Dick gave his family a part of who he was and a part of who we will become . . . his love, wisdom and example will shape the lives of his family for a life-time. One of his favorite Bible verses is from Joshua 24:15 . . . "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."

Left to cherish the memory of a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather is his loving wife of 64 years, Mildred Walter; his six children: Susan Lynn Leach (husband J.R.) of Edmond, OK; Jeanne Kaye Masters (husband Jerry) of Dover, AR; Janis Lee Christensen (husband Tom) of Lenox, IA; Orval "David" Walter of Wickenburg, AZ; Mark Richard Walter (wife Juliann) of Fort Dodge, IA; and John William Walter (wife Jane) of Tarkio, MO; fourteen grandchildren; and twenty-three great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Jo Hall of Sunrise Beach, MO; one brother-in-law, Marlin Brown (wife Burdean) of Corning, IA; and many other relatives and friends.
