Don loved the outdoors and first began to appreciate nature by walking the railroad tracks to and from country school. In his eighth grade year of education, he attended school in Sharpsburg. It was at the Sharpsburg Community School where he found his true love, Betty Brown.

Hardee, Emory Junior -Celebration of Life Services for Emory Junior Hardee, age 90, of Bedford, who passed away Saturday, October 25, 2014 at the Bedford Nursing & Rehab Center will be held Saturday, November 1, 2014, at 1:30 PM at the Bedford United Methodist Church. Visitation will be Friday at the Ritchie Funeral Home from 3 to 7 with the family greeting friends from 5 to 7. Interment with military rites will be held at the Fairview Cemetery.
Emory Hardee, Jr. was born September 11, 1924 in Page County, Iowa, near Siam, to Emory and MaryBelle Hardee. He graduated from Braddyville, Iowa in 1942, and then married Doris Thompson March 25, 1944. He served in the army 1944 to 1946, stationed first in the Philippines and later in Japan.
After returning home, Junior and Doris began farming near Siam, Iowa, then later in the Bedford area as well, where he lived the remainder of his life. He farmed his entire life, until in recent years failing health prevented him. He would comment on the beauty that God had put in nature, and he spent much of his life there. He loved the land, his cattle, and the middle-America way of life.
While he farmed nearly all his life, Junior took on quite a range of jobs. He worked at the shipyards in Long Beach, Calif. with cousin and good friend Eldon Vardaman. After the war, he worked in coal mines west of Clarinda. In the early 60s, he did carpenter work in Maryville. He then drove a truck, hauling asphalt, again with Eldon, then drove a stock truck for Laverne Wall. He also did plumbing for Glen Burroughs (Bedford), and in the early 70s, he worked for Peve Feed & Fertilizer (Hopkins). Junior lived an industrious life.
Junior was devoted to his community, serving on the Siam, Taylor County, and Bedford school boards. He believed that education was key to the future of our young people and the rural life, which he labored hard to preserve. To that end, he also served on the Board of Directors of the Federal Land Bank for several years, to help young farmers get their start. His mind was ever on the next generation.
Junior proudly participated in the American Legion over 60 years. He also belonged to the Methodist Church, the Siam Masonic Lodge, the Bedford Saddle Club, and the Democratic Party. He attended three national school board conventions, several Land Bank area conventions, the World’s Fair at Knoxville, Tenn. in 1982, and state square dance conventions.
Junior enjoyed square dancing with Doris, attending his kid’s sporting events, traveling, and of course his many grandchildren – and later, great-grandchildren. His face would always light up around children. In his latter years, as his body began to betray him and reflection had begun to set in, he would tear up at family gatherings.
Just this year, Junior and Doris celebrated their 70th anniversary. Junior loved farming, but Doris was the love of his life.
Junior was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Joleen, brother Bob, sisters Jennie, Iris and Inez, and daughter-in-law Shari. He is survived by wife Doris, brothers Ron and Smith, sister Naomi, and children Stephen and wife Joan, Scott and wife Lynda, Tom and wife Nancy, and Edwin and wife Angela, along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Like so many in this region, Junior came out of the Depression with pretty much nothing and faced challenges and setbacks throughout his life. He knew heartache and loss. Yet, through wise living, hard work, and resilience he constructed a worthy life. “It’s not a perfect world,” he often commented when things went sour, but he did his part to make it a better one

While being raised in Bedford, Mike developed a love for family, sports, hunting, fishing, music, and a knack for hoarding Mom’s chocolate chip cookies. Mike enjoyed the college scene at the University of Iowa and UNI before settling down to raise a family in Waterloo. In addition to working at Granger while in (Cedar Falls/Waterloo), Mike was bitten by the karaoke bug.
In 2002, Mike and his kids (Alexis and Caleb) moved back to Bedford so that they could be near family and live in the small hometown community that he loved. And so it happened...the Locker Room was established and Mike was home.
Later in 2002, Mike received the devastating diagnosis of brain cancer. The tough “Lil Swede” never wallowed in self-pity and never wanted anyone to feel sorry for him. Mike just wanted to enjoy life with family and friends. He was also hoping to find the love of a lifetime. As it turns out, someone he dated in high school was praying for the same thing. In 2005, Mike reconnected with Bedford graduate, Alice Diggs (he often thanked her for paying the $10.00 to obtain his email address from classmates.com). Mike and Alice were married in 2006. The family was made complete in (2007) with the birth of their son, Micah.
Mike was a sports nut. The Bedford community was well-served by Mike’s passion for sports. Mike loved being a part of the Bulldog Football family, including assisting Doc in the announcers booth for years, then finally stealing the microphone away from the old man. He was a loyal KC Chiefs fan and proud season ticket holder for over 10 years...rarely missing a home game. Fantasy football...and love for the game led naturally into another favorite pastime...sports banter at the Locker Room. An avid golfer, Mike enjoyed countless rounds with Doc and friends, tournaments, and years of service for the Bedford Country Club as president and “greens keeper”. Mike also enjoyed many years of volunteering for the Principal Classic Golf Tournament in Des Moines.
Mike was blessed with the love of music and a true gift for sharing it through karaoke. He sang for us and with us, tolerated our indulgences, and humbly sang our requests...because it was just plain fun and another way to connect with friends and family.
Near the end of his life, Mike was blessed with an overwhelming peace when he chose to reaffirm his faith and was baptized by brother, Steve Johnson, at bedside in the presence of family and friends, demonstrating his belief in eternal life through Jesus Christ.
Mike wished to thank his friends and community for all of the love and support he and his family received during his final battle. Mike passed away at home on Friday, September 19, 2014 at 7:21am in the presence of his loving wife, Alice, and family. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Vernon and Dorothy Johnson (Burlington,IA) maternal grandparents Art Hansen ( Spencer, IA ) and Emma Louise Combs (Mesa, AZ), special uncles, Bill Willson and Don Johnson all of Burlington, IA. Mike is survived by his wife Alice, three children (Alexis, Caleb, and Micah), parents Doc and Kay Johnson, brother Steven James Johnson of Clarinda, (wife, Sherri, daughter, Erin and granddaughter Avrie) sister Jill Anne Johnson of Urbandale, aunt Shirley Willson, and cousin Kari Cooper of Burlington, IA., and uncle Bill Hansen, Prescott Valley, AZ.
Until we meet on the other side,
Mike will surely be singing with angels and enjoying the pleasure of
heaven’s courses (with no green’s fees), preparing to greet us with that smile
(or smirk), that laugh, and a “proper” hug.
Rest in Peace, our dear little brother, dad, husband and son

Nina was a seamstress having started young she made her first dress when she was 12 years old.…about that same time her older brother Noble said he would pay her a quarter if she would make him a pie…so she learned to make a pie. Merlyn was employed at the Gambles Store where he taught Mike how to count change to customers. In 1958, he became the custodian at the Taylor County Courthouse. He took great pride in keeping the yard neat and the Courthouse in “tip-top” shape. A favorite time for Merlyn was coffee time, so he could visit with the employees there.
On April 17, 1949, Easter Sunday, He was united in marriage to Marilyn Campain in Bedford. They enjoyed over 63 years together. They were blessed with the birth of a son, Michael Eugene.
Merlyn enjoyed buying investment properties. He would fix them up, rent them or sell the property on contract. He helped many families experience home ownership or to have a roof over their head. Merlyn enjoyed mowing his lawn and others as well. He was very picky about mowing a certain way and often shared his techniques with anyone who asked and with some who didn’t! Mike and the grandkids had to buy the cows but Merlyn cared and fed them at no charge. The money from the sale of the calves then went towards college expenses.
He had a soft heart for the underprivileged as well. This was shown best in the kindness to Donnie Blake. Merlyn made sure Donnie had a house to live in while Dr. Lucas took care of Donnie’s food and clothing.

Spencer, Belinda Irene Harrison- Celebration of Life Services for Belinda Spencer, age 50, of Bedford, who died Thursday, September 18, 2014 at Bedford Nursing & Rehab will be held Tuesday, September 23, 2014 at 10:30 AM at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Bedford. Interment will be held at the Fairview Cemetery in Bedford.
Belinda Irene (Harrison) Spencer was born in Clarinda, Iowa on January 1, 1964, the daughter of Duane Olney Harrison and Lula Irene (Young) Harrison. She graduated from New Market High School with the Class of 1982.
Belinda was one of those people who truly had a 'love for life.' She loved nature and the outdoors, whether it was developing her flower beds, gardening, fishing or sitting around a campfire. It was all a perfect way to relax.
Belinda understood the value of hard work and a job well done. She went on to start her own cleaning service and often had a waiting list of clients requesting her services. She always tried to do a little extra for her 'people'. and at the end of the job, the best part of the day was enjoying coffee and cookies with whomever she was working for that day. It may have been work, but each and everyone of her 'people' were more family than client and she loved them all as such.
Belinda's greatest love of all was her family. Holidays and birthdays were perfect excuses for gatherings and get-togethers. She often spent the day shopping with her mom and her girls. (They couldn't outlast her . . no matter how they tried!) When the girls were young, she enjoyed school programs and dance recitals. Swim meets and tumbling competition meant day trips or weekend get-a-ways with her family.
Belinda brimmed with pride as she watched her girls grow into beautiful young women, making their way into the world, each in their own way. Belinda had some favorite phrases that she was fond of: FAITH, FAMILY, LOVE and WHERE THERE IS A WILL, THERE IS A WAY. She lived her life that way. She will be sadly missed.
Left to cherish Belinda's memory is her loving husband, Kenny Spencer of Bedford, Iowa; daughters, Krystal Spencer (partner Christopher) of Skidmore, Missouri; and Holly Spencer (friend Jake) of Clarinda, Iowa; her father, Duane Harrison of Siam, Iowa; brother, Jason Harrison and wife Jill of New Market, Iowa; brothers-in-law, Mark Spencer and wife Penny; David Spencer; Todd Spencer and wife Cindy and Bryan Spencer and wife Carrie; step-son, Jeremiah Spencer and Audrey; step-daughter, Laura Vaughn and husband Ty; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, step-grandchildren and a whole lot of friends. She will be missed dearly.
Preceding Belinda in death are her maternal and paternal grandparents; Uncle Rick Young, Uncle Butch Williams, Uncle Tom Maxwell, Aunt Shirley Lock and her mother, Irene Harrison.
